      Yes of course!! Living quite close to Garfield I use it as a fitness training route a couple times a week. Maybe we'll run into one another up there! Cheers 👍

      Yes, I was very fortunate to have light snow over on Grand Mesa for some background footage! Since that day, I've made Garfield my go to training climb, really love that route!! Thanks again 👍👍

      I wanted to make sure I got plenty of footage of not only Garfield, my destination, but the Valley and especially Grand Mesa, which as you can see is spectacular in the winter months with the snow we've had!! Always appreciate your comments my friend, have a wonderful holiday season!

      Thank you Christopher, I was quite impressed myself, not expecting too much and pleasantly surprised! I did a similar hike just a couple miles west, same cliffs, 2000' and was again very pleasantly surprised at just how cool it was yet different, many more towers coming off the main Book Cliffs, cliffs band. May have to do a short vid on that hike! Sweet Golden eagle up there circling a tower. Cheers!

    If you are coming to the San Juans this summer I would urge you to check out Mt Garfield just south of Silverton. At 13,074 Feet & #591 in Colorado it isn't on anybodys bucket list. I believe the register showed at most it gets climbed 3 or 4 times a year and some years not at all. Living in Durango I have done a lot of the San Juans (47 of the highest 50) and Garfield easily rates as the hardest. Start at Molas, down to the Animas. Head directly up the north slope. The peak climbs about 4000 feet in a horizontal mile so its a constant climb more than a hike. The saving grace its made of the Quartzite band stretching from Snowden to East Trinity with great rock IF it is dry. At the top with twin summits and always an ice field between them. Massive exposure of course. The peak is mostly a down climb. At the river..take a deep breath...your vehicle is 1800 feet up....37 switch backs!!! Bring your headlamp!!!
    Have fun!!! If you are around Durango maybe we could have breakfast and compare war stories.

    Coming down is a real knee basher. I've climbed it 4 times, and every time my knees were killing me by the time I got back to the car.

    • @LS-kl6bj
      @LS-kl6bj 2 роки тому +2

      As Karl suggested, you need to start using trekking poles. They aren't just for old people, and they really help reduce the impact on the knees, regardless of one's age.

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  2 роки тому +1

      @@LS-kl6bj AND you'll be going way faster on the steep ups too, improved traction as well as more stable all around. . . I use them to push off to take giant steps I'd otherwise not try as well. I am way faster with poles but, they are a bit of an annoyance when trying to deal with the cameras at the same time. . . I've set up a system to telescope them short and clip'em high on a shoulder strap. . . good for short class 3 sections too.

    I've just discovered, and started binge-watching, your awesome channel. Suggestion for you: Vestal Peak via Wham Ridge. I free soloed this summer 2021. 13.5 hours car to car. One of the most aesthetic climbs I've ever done. Thanks for the videos!

      I am all over that one, looks incredible, I was fully intending on taking the train and doing a few peaks back there over a few day but OMG there was too much rain in the forecasts all late last summer didn't want to risk getting stuffed and then started moving to GJ in September. . . Awesome job cranking that whole adventure out in a MONSTER Day! I'm always looking for partners that can safely solo 5 easy if you're interested in cranking something similar out with me? There a few epic ones right near by there!

      Would love to hit some peaks with you, unfortunately I'm in San Diego and only get to Colorado every few years.
      If you have any interest, I've got me eye on Vishnu Temple, a 5.4 off the Grand Canyon North Rim, possibly for the fall of 2023 or spring 2024.

    I did this hike in the first year I moved to GJ. It killed me. I had trouble getting out of bed for a few weeks. The way down is dangerous as well. My toes slamming into the toe box of my hiking boots caused some anguish as well.

    8:59 given some of these aerial shots, it looks like one could top rope from the summit pretty easily, is that common?

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure, would have to take a close look at that head wall under any place there's a decent spot for an anchor to see if it's climbable. Would be a long haul with gear but EPIC SPOT. From what I could tell it did seem pretty blank but, you never know, just one nice fingers to hands size crack would be enough. . .
