  • Went to shoot the Traditions .54 Caliber Blunderbuss that we built and the old 1990's Cabela's Hawken .54 Caliber Black powder rifle.
Many thanks to Samilisplace AirBNB where we stayed in the high desert to off road and shoot black powder. It was a beautiful place close to where we wanted to shoot.
Both were loaded with 90 grains of Pyrodex RS rifle powder and .530 caliber balls and patches.
The target was homemade ballistic gel made with Walmart unflavored Jello but it was knocked off the and filled with pebbles which made it difficult to tell penetration. Regardless, both the Hawken and the Blunderbuss were able to penetrate all the way through the 11 1/2" of gel, so I will probably have to redo the test with longer blocks of jello.
We tried shooting a ball and some pebbles at the jello but it was too difficult to tell apart the additional strikes.
Additionally, we fired a Traditions .45 caliber cap and ball pistol and a Pietta 1951 Colt .44 caliber cap and ball blackpowder revolver.
One of our next videos will be patterning the blunderbuss on a target.
