That spring is also extremely important. It allows oil to bypass the filter and flow around it if the pressure is too high, such as when the oil filter is too clogged. This can prevent catastrophic engine failure. Without the spring, your oil filter will just rattle around in there, and your oil won't get filtered much if at all.

@@allmycarsisbroke there should also be a washer there. Not sure if that's clearly shown in the video. A lot of the time it sticks to the old filter and ends up in the bin
