It’ll run without limp mode but you’ll have a check engine light and it’ll be boosting higher then requested during normal cruising. The vnt is closed up to produce more exhaust manifold pressure to be able feed egr into the intake against boost pressure, if that exhaust can’t go anywhere because of the blocked off port it’ll end up spooling the turbo more then it needs.
Awesome video what’s the stock exhaust look like off the turbo? Just bought an 06 and failed Maryland inspection. Needs new flex pipe. Is there a canister off the turbo or a pipe that leaves the turbo?
Josh very well done ! So wondering if you have any experience blocking off the EGR off and cleaning out the intake manifold- ? Did you notice restored power and fuel economy? thanks!
Thanks, I don’t find the pd’s get as dirty as the Alh. I’ve had multiple ALH’s that you couldn’t fit a pen in the throat of the intake. It’s night a day difference cleaning it when it’s that bad but obviously any build up will affect it some. I’d say if your going through the work it doesn’t hurt to pop it off for a few bolts that it is and clean it out then it should be good for the life of the car/engine.
Exactly the video I’ve been looking for but do you have the link for the egr delete with block offs because i cant find them on ebay only aliexpress but not tryna wait 2 months for it to come in.
I've never used them personally but TDIupgrades.com sells the racepipe and block offs seperate (they look like the same ones from aliexpress). Mecevo.ca here in canada makes a nice one from 304 stainless if your looking for a little more quality then the ebay/aliexpress ones.
They used to be abundant on ebay/aliexpress/amazon but they aren't as much anymore (supply chain issues??), id check TDIupgrades.com or Mecevo.ca, they'll be pricier but alot better quality
Hey Josh can you let me know how you diy tune this I did the track mod you got off eBay and the car still has no power, I replaced the turbo and head gasket it’s building boost I see that with my scan tool it’s showing boost is at 900 at idle but should be at 1000. When I’m driving the boost is fine the car had this issue when it came into my shop and had codes for low boost coolant leak and eating oil all four cylinders compression tested fine did the head gasket turbo and and still did the same so I did the delete and still same boat no power lots of smoke on start but by clear after I think it’s still coming from all the oil that’s in the interior cooler help!!
My wife's 06 jetta tdi has a heck of a boost leak and iam sure it's the butterfly valve you were showing. Iam hopefully going to get to it this weekend. If egr is removed it does it require a tuner? Also if I was to get a tuner what would you recommend? Thanks!
A tune is ideal, without one you’ll get a check engine light and possibly some boost fluctuations. It will run without a tune but these wake up a bit once tuned. Multiple tuner options depending on where your located, Malone/Kerma/rocket chip are very well known names. Doman8 performance is also quite good if your local in Ontario and Tekmektronics in the states.
so i already have a check engine light for the butterfly valve that has failed, if i just remove all this stuff and dont get a tune, ill just have a check engine light like already do now?
Any thoughts on a BRM 06 TDI. It gets up to speed but it's laggy except for between 2100 and 3000 rpm. Engine is very jerky until it warms up. New fuel and air filter. I have p0131 po101 po299 p2196 codes.
You have a bad turbo actuator making the jerky behavior you can try the “zip tie mod” on the tdi forums to get rid of that behavior just don’t tighten it too much or it’ll overboost and go into limp mode too little and it won’t get rid of the issue
Just installed a ASV retaining race pipe. And after the squealing from the antifreeze on the belt stopped. I have a hissing under acceleration and definitely feels like im not building boost like I normally would? I left the cooler on the car. But cut the pipe that goes back up to the egr from the cooler to remove it? Im not sure if Im missing something?
@@SmoshuaJith that’ll need to be capped some way or install blocker plate at the turbo or cooler. You’re loosing turbo drive pressure so it won’t boost like normal
If i don’t want to remove everything all i have to do is install the block off plate from the egr cooler and the turbo? Or is there more to it then that?
As long as it’s not leaking coolant then yes ideally on the turbo as sometimes the egr flex pipes leak. Other option is get it tuned out and leave everything intact or run dynamic egr.
Yeah so instead of installing the race pipe, once the egr piping is removed to the egr valve, install a block off in place of the pipe. You would require 2 block off plates now but that’d be cheaper then the race pipe
Marginal gains or possibly worse fuel mileage. Without the cooler the engine takes longer to warm up causing higher fuel consumption. Ideally a dynamic egr is best, running egr when cold to help warm up then shut it off once its warmed.
I touched on it in some of my V10 TDI videos, involves buying a kess cable from ebay and editing the file yourself. I hope to do some more diy tuning videos this summer
If I disconnect the cooler pipe from the exhaust manifold can I just leave the cooler pipe disconnected but install the block plate on the exhaust manifold? I did the EGR delete but the cooler is hissing so I want to block it at the exhaust manifold now.
Yeah I've done it that way when the flex breaks, just leave the cooler there and block at the manifold. Only downside is if you ever decide to fix the egr the cooler might be full of road grime depending on your driving conditions
Hey josh I am trying to bypass the coolant lines that go into the egr cooler would it be possible for me to pay you for a video chat while I’m under the hood I just need a few pointers wouldn’t take long
You can't harm polar bears by deleting the EGR, you would have to migrate black bears into polar bear territories to wipe out the polar bears. Removing the EGR improves fuel efficiency thereby saving the environment!
finally a proper video on how to do this, thanks buddy👍
I figured it was a good time to make a video on it, perfect time to see where all the bolts are.
Great video .I'm going with the blocker plate😃
Greta video!! Thanks. Is a tune mandatory after the delete or just to keep the engine light out?
It’ll run without limp mode but you’ll have a check engine light and it’ll be boosting higher then requested during normal cruising.

The cat is right there off the turbo, similar to the newer TDI’s, the flex pipe is lower closer to the subframe
how do you do the DIY tune
Can I leave the cooler on it but still just put the race pipe on with the block off plate?
Josh very well done !

I noticed you have Kess tuner on the bench, could you do a DSG flash video? Thanks man and keep on making fantastic content!
I'm hoping to do one in the future

@@JoshsJettas perfect thank you so much man
Question: If you add the blocker plate to the BRM, does anything have to occur with tuning? OR VAG-COM settings?
Nothings adjustable on these like the alh, the check engine light will be on unless you get a tune
Can you do a video on the diy tune please?
I did one on the bew which is quite sinilar
Awesome video! I have a 06 brm u know where to get a egr delete? Been looking awhile no luck.

Hey Josh I just got my first TDI an hour ago. Needs new cam and lifters. Where do you get the tools to work on this engine?
Sorry for the late reply, IDParts is a great place for parts and tools

If you choose to put the race pipe on, is there anything you have to add for the EGR cooler delete?
Most race pipes come with the hose adapter and blocker plates needed
Just installed a ASV retaining race pipe. And after the squealing from the antifreeze on the belt stopped. I have a hissing under acceleration and definitely feels like im not building boost like I normally would? I left the cooler on the car. But cut the pipe that goes back up to the egr from the cooler to remove it? Im not sure if Im missing something?
How’d you cap the egr line that you cut? Sounds like your losing exhaust pressure from there and that would make it not build boost like normal
@@JoshsJettas I cut the pipe from the cooler up to the egr on the right side. I didnt cap it tho.
@@SmoshuaJith that’ll need to be capped some way or install blocker plate at the turbo or cooler. You’re loosing turbo drive pressure so it won’t boost like normal
Can I just get rid of my whole egr system but keep the anti shudder valve?
put a blocker plate and keep the egr valve and sudder valve, i believe there are kits as well
Awesome video!
Thanks, gotta show the brm’s some love as well

can you recommend a EGR delete kit for a 2006 that you can trust to fit up the first time?
TDI upgrades as well as mec evo both sell nice kits, although a little more pricey.
Can you remove the butterfly valve and cooler and leave the shudder valve up top for a runaway safety? Even better yet, just the butterfly valve?
Yeah so instead of installing the race pipe, once the egr piping is removed to the egr valve, install a block off in place of the pipe. You would require 2 block off plates now but that’d be cheaper then the race pipe
If i block off the bottom of the shutter valve will i be able to keep it?
As in keep the anti shudder and egr valve but put the blocker between the valve and the pipe? Yup that’ll work
So you don’t need a tune?
would removal of this egr help with fuel economy at all?
Marginal gains or possibly worse fuel mileage. Without the cooler the engine takes longer to warm up causing higher fuel consumption. Ideally a dynamic egr is best, running egr when cold to help warm up then shut it off once its warmed.
Darkside development had a kit that keeps the ASV in place. FyI
Why don't you cleaning out the intake manifold bro? 😩😩
It got cleaned out before installing on the car, this was just a quick video during disassembly as I haven’t seen many videos on BRM’s sadly.
@@JoshsJettas oh i'm sorry :D
What would the diy tune be ?

What size silicone elbow is it?
The brm pipe is a 55mm pipe
If I disconnect the cooler pipe from the exhaust manifold can I just leave the cooler pipe disconnected but install the block plate on the exhaust manifold? I did the EGR delete but the cooler is hissing so I want to block it at the exhaust manifold now.

What years is BRM?
2006 in jetta sedan, 04-05 were BEW in the jettas and 04-06 in wagon and golfs

Soooo how hard is it to get this shit off when the motor is in the car ???? Lol that is the question 🤔🤔🤔
Definitely less fun, add in the possibility of breaking the egr studs
