    This is the first time i see capsaicin crystalls on youtube. Congradulations. Others extracted some red goo. Nile red was very close to this when he made capsaicinoid and purified it with 10% potassium hydroxide. Try scale it up, its much easier to recrystallize bigger amount of crystalls.

    For a non chemist you have a lot of chemistry glassware and knowledge though 👌

    Cough-inducing powder indeed! I'm delighted you started with Carolina Reapers - and that you used gloves. Ha ha!

      Regarding the gloves, I learned my lesson after I deseeded fresh chillies for chutney one day, and during the night wondered if that's what having rheumatism while burning at the stake feels like 🥵

    If you're getting the 10% capsaicin figure by using the 1.6M scoville nominal figure for Carolina Reapers, it's worth pointing out that figure is felt to be optimistic. Chilli breeders have an incentive to send multiple samples for testing and cherry pick the highest ones. Commercial samples of Carolina Reaper test around 1M. Your yield was probably slightly better than 6.9%.

    yet with a sufficiently low quantity of capsaicin, coffee is not too bad iirc ;)

    I didnt get one thing. When you evaporated Ethylacetate you added then 10% NaOH and left it on 4 hours. Have you filtered the solution before adjusting the ph to 7? You should have cotton filtered the solution because when you added NaOH you converted capsaicin into its sodium salt that is water soluble, all impurities like carotinoids will remain on cotton as they are not water soluble. Then you have clear alkiline water solution that contain mostly capsaicin, acidify it to pH 7 and get crystalls of capsaicin.

      Although the procedure I was following didn't mention that, I probably should have tried that. But I have a prediction, that it wouldn't have helped much. The main carotenoid in paprika is capsanthin, and it has hydroxy groups, which I think would had reacted with the base, turning it into a salt as well. I could be wrong though - not a chemist after all :)

    • @NinjaChemistChannel
      @NinjaChemistChannel Рік тому +3

      @@Nota_Chemist it has hydroxy groups but they are not phenols and cannot give salt with 10% NaOH they require stronger bases like sodium methylate

      Ninjachemist, even though I work with energetics professionally I’ve loved your videos since I found your channel. Is there any specific reason why you stopped, and any way you can make more? I was really impressed with your tmdd smoke screen video. Not many people have the guts to try that, let alone hold it in their hand no matter how much information says it’s reasonably safe.

      @@chemistryofquestionablequa6252 youtube banned me again and again and i stopped. I quit my career of professional chemist and switched to software development. Sometimes I still work with energetics but nothing cool and great, that could become an interesting video.
