  • Hemenway Boat Launch - Lake Mead Historic Low Water levels have only one boat launch left on the entire Lake Mead. Big boats now have to use cranes that cost thousands of dollars to launch into the Lake. Historic Low levels since 1937 have occurred. Also, check out the NASA Photos from this week of how much Lake Mead has drained away.

The video left before the boat was completely lowered. The guy next to it was only in water up to waist. That boats draft has to be more than a few feet. And people with boats with really shallow drafts and experienced are getting hung up on shelves on the lake. What was the owner even thinking since the lake is going down. I expected the opposite... more people pulling their boats out.. not in. Too much money and not enough sense I guess.

It sure is crazy to be putting a boat IN the lake under these conditions, more like it's time to do the last ever HAUL OUT! As tough as the boat insurers are these days, I am surprised that all the companies are not telling boat owners that they should be pulling out the boat if they want coverage to continue. That will probably soon be coming.

Lake Mead dropped almost two inches in the past two days. Accelerating. Due to drought, much much less coming down from Glenn Canyon Dam at Lake Powell, Colorado River downstream uses, and the V shape of the lake. Very sad. Very surprised at the huge boat being able to actually crane to launch. Soon that will be how the remaining big boats get taken out of the water, I bet.

what they need for large boats is to unhook a trailer from the vehicle (couldn't easily with that one though) and have the trailer on a winch anchored to the ground and just winch the trailer as far as you need down in to the lake for the boat to float.

With all the pain we feel from an extended drought in the southwest, how can our government leaders in Washington approve the spending of $400 billion for bombs and not one cent for a diversion of the Mississippi River which would bring water to the southwest where our farmers are failing and all of our city dwellers Will find empty shelves in the grocery store.? $400 billion would build 400 desalination plants.

    • @juliemulie1805

Mississippi drainage basin is largely in drought. Year two for Missouri river basin. Those of us in the Midwest depend on these for our drinking water, irrigation through recharging of the aquifers, and also to move commodities. We don't always have enough for our own use. The southwest water basin was never meant to hold 40 million people and irrigate arid land. Desalination depends on power, and you'll run out of electricity before you run out of water, and then there is the remaining sludge...

There was a massive rockslide in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado in August 2021 in the Grizzly Creek burn scar which caused I-70 to shut down for a couple weeks. This massive rockslide also caused the Colorado River to divert in 6 places. Not one authority, news station, and what not has mentioned this. The last thing mentioned on the rockslide was CDOT discussing ongoing infrastructure issues from the rockslide in February 2022, yet did not mention anything about restoring the river. Maybe because they know they can't at this point. I hope not

The lowering lake is not intentional, the American desert Southwest is in the midst of one of its worst droughts in something like 2000 years. There hasn't been enough rain or snowfall in the past 20 years to keep the lake up to a viable level. At the rate of Mead is going down, in the next few years there won't be much of a lake left.

Water level is amazing enough. More amazing is the number of residences being built in Southern California. Construction of those homes alone requires massive amounts of water from grading through concrete structures and then the home owners. Not to include green spaces and swimming pools. Just a reminder that everything you see that is green and growing is not native and all plants and trees are imports. California use to be grassland and semi arid and semi desert with an average rainfall of 7 to 8 inches per year. Since Hoover Dam and the L.A. aqueduct both of the early part of the 1900's has created this Eureka of California. The drive for gold of 1849 is only superseded for the drive for water of this century. High water tables and and very shallow wells was the key element of the early 1900's until the 1980's. Water depletion and deeper wells along with the drought is truly a triple threat to the Southwest. Great video.

I'm actually surprised they aren't digging out channels at the shoreline so water can flow in and make the launch areas a little deeper. For example get an excavator and dig a big trench like 30 feet wide and 100 feel long in from the current shore line. Make the trench 10 feet deep. Now they have a better place to launch larger boats this way.

with that kind of money, why not take the boat where you can thoroughly enjoy it . . .

I would think its time to remove all the non trailable boats out of the lake while there is still a chance. There is not much of a chance that lake is ever coming back.

A nice place to boondock camp in the Vegas area: Lovell Canyon.
Free, paved road, trees, shady campsites and cool 5000' high elevation.
Lovell Canyon off of hwy 160.
    Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone!
And no, that spot on the right was never the marina.
Lake Mead was at full pool in 2000.

Ha Ha ! They changed the name from "Lake Mead" to "Lake Mud" ?? Are you serious ?? LOL ! I saw this exact species of fish resting on the weir of Hoover Dam in the 1980's. Water remains surprisingly clear though. My friend in Las Vegas told me they see 113 - 115 deg F these days in Summerlin ... HOT ! They need A/C simply to "survive". You will probably take Interstate-15 to drive to Utah but you should take US 95 north of Vegas and climb up Mount Charleston, the place to be in summer in the Las Vegas Valley. Was "Captain Paul" one of those Russian oligarchs ?
Splendid video as usual, Russ ! RICHARD
