He follows in the footsteps of the late, phenomenally great Jessye Norman. The different character voices, facial expressions, intensity of the ending. Excellent. The world’s shortest opera
Despite some slight oopsies in the accompaniment, the approach of this rendition was was surprising and exciting to me. I enjoy listening to this rendition.
I think Mr. Baillieu is struggling, because Mr. Appl made some difficult speed changes in already difficult passages (3:05 - 3:24). But he kept up very well!
As an artsong accompanist I can tell that you need a piano with good repetition. If you don't have one...the greatest pianists can struggle with this piece.
Yes, Mr. Appl is a great singer, but i think this wasn't his best interpretation. His changes in tempo are illogical, his diction is not too accurate either in this recording and i don't even know what to say about his mimic. It seems like he wants to imitate Jesse Norman's performance but his emotions don't really reach the audience. I think all of these factors led to the struggling of the pianist.
Ich frage mich, wie sich diese fantastische Technik auf andere Vertonungen von "Der Erlkönig" anwenden ließe! Bravo!
I'm pleased to know Benjamin Appl. His voice is powerful and appealing, which facinated the listeners.

Listen to Fischer-Dieskau's version of this wonderful Lied - every syllable, every note sharp & clear and a brilliant interpretation.
Absolutely fabulous!
Thanks for posting this great performance.
Genial❤❤❤ bravo!
I wonder how this fantastic technique would apply to other musicalizations of Der Erlkönig ! Bravo!
Wonderful!
Fantastisch!!!
Thanks!

Wonderful timbre and projection.,,,,,not another...D.F.-D. clone...
Usually Mr Baillieu is a solid and gifted pianist, but he's clearly struggling here.
Yes, I think so as well. There are also moments when he begins to lose control (somewhat) and starts to "rush".

What rot!
He's just trying to get faster than Erlkönig, so the boy can be safe

Me parece que las partes del niño no le quedan tan bien como a Jessye Norman
I casually found this after combing through UA-cam to find random performances after I heard it in Academic Decathlon. Who else here did that?
Nice performance. It would be more better if you sang as a narrator.
