It was a golden era of opera and I am glad I was able to see many of them perform live. Sutherland, Pavarotti, Sills, Domingo, Callas, Caballe, Price, and Horne. There are no singers today who can compare to them. They were unique and sublime.
The sopranos and mezzos in this Century are quiet good compare to the Golden Age... but Basses, Baris and Tenors? I dont know even one that could compare to them
Signore Pavarotti had such a beautiful lyric tenor voice with that rather high pitch and ringing, colored timbre. One of the greats,no doubt.May you rest in peace Luciano. Buon viaggio.
sublime -- this kind of singing will never be heard again in my generation -- thank God for recordings! R.I.P most beloved tenor of your generation. Your voice gave us a taste of heaven in this world.
love it when at 5:10 they look for each others' hands so they can stop singing the last note at precisely the exact same time, and they do it! brilliantly of course.
I would say that here we have 2 voices of the century! Unfortunately I never had the chance to listen to them both live, but had the enormous pleasure of enjoying Pavarotti perform in 4 Operas as well as 3 concerts live (1989/1993)....I WILL NEVER FORGET! R.I.P. Maestro...
This is my all-time favorite version of this great duet. The two greatest voices of the latter half of the 20th century singing in perfect unison. It will never be surpassed.
Unbelievable how their voices soar in such a huge space. To have been able to hear them live in their prime....That last sustained high note from both of them must have put a whole in the back of the theater.
Setting technique aside for the moment, for pure sound I know I will never hear the equal in my lifetime. But I am so grateful that my life coincided with the lives of these two miraculous legends of song. Brava, and bravo and grazie un mille volte.
She's recognized as one of the finest soprano voices to have come out of the 20th century. The first time that I heard this performance I was co-incidentally watching the video also. It is beyond words to describe how difficult it is to sing like that. Years of experience and practice along with staying power. Pavarotti was reputedly worth 300 million dollars when he died.
The Heavenly Choir sings sweeter today; God has brought his tenor home. In manus tuas, misericors Salvator, servum tuum Luciano commendamus. Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace, Luciano. Amen.
I miss Pavarotti, he was so young here and even his sneezing came out perfectly back then. I love Sutherland too, a woman of sweet, soft and strong voice.
She wasn't an actor, but her phenomenal voice and love for the work made her the perfect (smack down) foil for Pavarotti. I'm glad I lived to hear her.
OUTSTANDING!!!! Thank you SO much for posting these excerpts from an outstanding and truly magical night. Perhaps we took these singers too much for granted at the time. Look around now: any opera house would sell its soul to the devil for even the "second-tier" singers of this time!!!
Sutherland sings with wonderful clarity and control. She hits the notes squarely and uses her breath control with great gentleness when called for. Pavarotti when young lacked some of the depth that he got as he aged. Despite that, he was the greatest tenor in the history of the art. sanjosemike
This gala is incredible Bravissimi! As great as Sutherland and Pavarotti was, Nilsson was the highlight of the entire show, singing the final scene from Salome with a mammoth voice that totally brought down the House. This woman(Nilsson) crushed the orchestra with that amazing sound! We do not have the luxury of such super voices these days. Other highlights include Domingo and Caballe singing the duet from Manon Lescaut. And Corelli and Tsilis-Gara singing the most beautiful Otello duet! WOW
In the late 1970's, my father gave me a tape called "Pavarotti: Hits from Lincoln Center". I have been in love with this man's voice ever since. The passion he sings with is remarkable. I believe it's hard to top that great quality he had back in the 70's. There's just something about his tone and quality that places him above any that have been mentioned here. However, I have enjoyed watching the videos of Costello and Valenti. Thanks for letting me know about them!!
From our ears to Gods....he now sings with the saints. It was my honor to see him twice; once in 1969 and once in 1990; both times were magical. God bless, and may you fly up to Heaven's choir on the wings of angels.
I watched this live on TV, then a month or so later, got to see them live in La Fille du Regiment in New Orleans during the annual Met tour (sadly discontinued). They sounded fantastic.
Why all this nonsense about the "size" of their voices. This is a sublime display of two glorious musical instruments. Both of their gifts were extraordinary.

I think Pavarotti in his heyday may have been the best tenor ever. Certainly one of the best. But I have never heard him live, so difficult to compare! About "size". Some people seems to think it is who is loudest. It is not! It is a fact that the best sopranos is heard over the orchestra, over the choir and over all the others soloists. This has to do with the physics of singing and hearing. But that does not mean that the soprano is "bigger" or "better" (or worse :) ) than the rest!
Blessed beyond measure am I to have seen Luciano numerous times in NYC and elsewhere. Always so gracious to his audience. I had no clue how blessed I was to be there at that time.
BRAVO!!!!
This is all new, and encouraging.Let's not lament the past, as a nostalgic excuse for not encouraging and promoting new singers. There are Pavarotti's and Sutherland's out there, and the popularity of opera in the postmodern world was never greater.
Two solar voices, like the summer sun at its peak.

I can't tell you how jealous I am 😭

5:13 their vibratos are in synch. The way they blend their voices is magical
sublime -- this kind of singing will never be heard again in my generation -- thank God for recordings! R.I.P most beloved tenor of your generation. Your voice gave us a taste of heaven in this world.
I wake up every day, and work towards this kind of line... (I am a full time opera singer).
The greatest moment of opera for free on youtube
es maravillosoooooooooooo
+Thordur Hognason Well said.
This duet has great chemistry. Fantastic.
love it when at 5:10 they look for each others' hands so they can stop singing the last note at precisely the exact same time, and they do it! brilliantly of course.
Listen to the final pair of B flats; Pavarotti's incredible ringing resonance, and Sutherland's bell like ping sound phenomenal when paired.
Legendary performance -- I'm speechless.
Pavarotti called her the "voice of the century"
nothing more to add.
I would say that here we have 2 voices of the century! Unfortunately I never had the chance to listen to them both live, but had the enormous pleasure of enjoying Pavarotti perform in 4 Operas as well as 3 concerts live (1989/1993)....I WILL NEVER FORGET! R.I.P. Maestro...
Luciano and Joan, one of the great pairings of opera, and one of my favorite of their duets.
RIP the two towering figures of Italian Opera. One mostly the one and only King of Tenors, Maestro Luciano Pavarotti.
No couple has ever sung this more beautifully. Every time I listen they take my breath away.
My all-time favorite operatic couple. Thank heavens for technology to preserve
this fabulous art.
The incomparable Joan Sutherland and the one and only Luciano Pavarotti. Love both of their voices. Together they were marvellous.
I never tire of seeing them sing together.
They are incomparable! And there will never be another Luciano!
This is my all-time favorite version of this great duet. The two greatest voices of the latter half of the 20th century singing in perfect unison. It will never be surpassed.
Bravissimo! Truly a video to seen in 100 years time and still be the best duet by La Stupenda and Luciano
Unbelievable how their voices soar in such a huge space. To have been able to hear them live in their prime....That last sustained high note from both of them must have put a whole in the back of the theater.
Pavarotti and Sutherland - simply the Best.
Setting technique aside for the moment, for pure sound I know I will never hear the equal in my lifetime. But I am so grateful that my life coincided with the lives of these two miraculous legends of song. Brava, and bravo and grazie un mille volte.
As good as it gets, what amazing singing, especially Luciano. Breathtaking.
This is so good, couldn't get a better pair to sing this.
Tow of the greatest opera singers of this century
Oh God, does it get any better than this? There are no words for these 2 voices. Simply majestic!

Pavarotti was reputedly worth 300 million dollars when he died.
Pavarotti was the greatest tenor ever, I have listened to quite a few,
Mario Lanza was my first experience of opera.
Donizetti smiles in heaven every time he listens, especially at 5:19 😊
I cannot get tired of this video... Pavarotti´s voice is pure light!!!!
Greatest duo ever!
Pavarotti is incredible in this performance. Like lightning.
WOW. Such great singing
Dear Joan and Luciano, God bless you for giving us so many great memories.
Definitely two of the greatest singers of all time.
Their voices are not of this world. Gifts from God.
Bravissimi.
Grande Joan
Two magnificent voices. Thank you!
¡Qué bella voz, Dios mío!
Wow... this is Pavarotti as hi best, in his true repertory what a bright and exquisite voice... he shall be rememebered
I love watching their breath support engage for that long 13 count C on the 'addio'. Pure Gold.
The Heavenly Choir sings sweeter today; God has brought his tenor home.
In manus tuas, misericors Salvator, servum tuum Luciano commendamus. Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei.
Requiescat in pace, Luciano. Amen.
I also like Joan's endings to high notes...she always lifts her head up like phew what a relief.
What a great duet!
I miss Pavarotti, he was so young here and even his sneezing came out perfectly back then. I love Sutherland too, a woman of sweet, soft and strong voice.
On appelait Pavarotti " la voix du siècle "....Rien à ajouter.
Sublime. The greatest!
Pavarotti giovine, mamma mia che bella voce !!!
Sutherland una brava Lucia, un ruolo insuperable para la sua voce.
She wasn't an actor, but her phenomenal voice and love for the work made her the perfect (smack down) foil for Pavarotti. I'm glad I lived to hear her.
Meraviglia....
Pochi sono i duetti che fanno venire i brividi e questo è uno di quelli! Due mostri sacri. Grazie.
A match made in heaven! May they duet with angels
This is the best, perfection.
Maravilloso!!!!! BRAVIII le due!!!!. They both must be heading the choir of Angels in Heaven!!!!
Wow, you have my list. But Nilsson is a MUST on any list of the all time best opera singers of the last Century.
WOOOOW! IT SOUNDS LIKE TONS OF PEOPLE WERE SINGING.
Incredibile!!!!!!
this is ridiculously beautiful.
Extraordinary...
La Stupenda o The incomparable...
Her secret...
Effortless, warm, vibrant...
Freely, powerfully, intensely...
Clarity and finesse...
Her voice was so naturally glorious...
Una diva

Pavarotti, the number one of all times

WOW WOW WOW ...cannot stop listening to these two together, such a perfect pairing. Baby Luciano's voice is so effortless... :-D
I thank every day that someone made me like opera. This is orgasmic and they are both the sublime purveyors of their art. I'm still shivering!
The crowd GOES WILD!!! Oh, to have been there at the Gala that night!
Joan was a remarkable talent...haven't
seen her kind since...great duet....I liked
Pav. a lot more during these years..
Surely one of opera's most formidable pairings.
OMG!!!!!!!! Nobody, but nobody comes near these two singing this!!!!!!
Such a beautiful song so perfectly sung by this dynamic duo. Their voices blend perfectly! Bravo!
do you know the complete name of this song? or at least enough so I can find it...
Duet Act 1 Lucia di Lammermoor
Verano a te
Thanks for best singing ever! R.I.P Maestro Pavarotti, you are still the greatest!
From our ears to Gods....he now sings with the saints. It was my honor to see him twice; once in 1969 and once in 1990; both times were magical. God bless, and may you fly up to Heaven's choir on the wings of angels.
That is a great inspired comment, wich I totally agree,ha,ha, great words!!! Both where among the best lyrical singers ever!!!!,Bravi!!!

@ They both seem to be of almost equal size in the theater.
Blessed beyond measure am I to have seen Luciano numerous times in NYC and elsewhere. Always so gracious to his audience. I had no clue how blessed I was to be there at that time.
