Even a worn out spare belt in the bottom of a fan beats a brand new belt on the shelf of a supply house on a weekend. Slap it on, finish the weekend, deal with the problem when the weekend emergency rate no longer applies.

Thank You so much for your videos. I'm a co owner of a small mom & pop restaurant on the east coast. I have learned so much from you. It is very hard to find anyone these days to come out even in emergency situations so I find myself on the net searching to fix things myself. I just want to take the time to let you know it's good people like you sharing info like this that helps the smaller guys like me stay afloat. Again Thank You and keep the videos coming.
The mold is probably in the ductwork too, that stuff spreads fast with the correct conditions.

I've always had good experience with Gates timing belt/water pump kits for vehicles, didn't realize they made HVAC belts too
Leave those old belts in there. It’s better to have an old belt than nothing at 7pm
And then you pull bagful of trash from the roof... While driving for new belt anyway
Or you can put a new belt in as a spare, so you don't have a loose sloppy belt as a spare
totally agree. if they don't do maintenance and you don't have a spare then best to leave the old one there for emergency use.
supply houses are not always local or open.

I have noticed a lot of customer requests to leave the old belts as back up incase the belt breaks. Of course it’s not the best belt to utilize since the belts dries up over time. But loved the video.
Yeah. During summers in college (early '80s) I worked for a HVAC guy in a mid-sized city as a gofer with some HVAC talent. When he replaced a belt he would inspect the old one and if he deemed it "Good enough for a Friday night call" he would leave it in the cabinet. The point was obvious-- if it was good enough to last at least for the weekend he would get home earlier, the customer's problem would be solved and he or one of his techs could return on Monday thus saving the customer a ton of overtime charges.
As far as I know ,which isn't all that much, he was usually right. If nothing else, the business was still a going a concern in 2007 when I moved out of the city to Seattle.
That's what I do on my maintenance, just leave one spare just in case and remove all the garbage cause most of the old belts are junk, and tell customers a recommendation to avoid future problems, is up to them to decide fix it or not. Haha, I remember going to California from Wyoming. In January, there was a rainy few days, and I was enjoying the cooler 65-70F weather, and I saw people in down coats with me walking by in a T-Shirt.
You mentioned taking and writing down the info on that one fan and motor specs. Something I like to do is take pictures of the data tags on them and that way you have it saved and you can even go into your edit option on your smart phone and go to text and type yourself notes on the pics. Also take pics to submit to the customer as well. Quicker than grabbing a notebook and writing down everything and you have it all saved on your phone. Also you can go to a picture and copy and paste serial or model numbers by selecting them on the pic.

We’re told at our company to leave an old belt in case of an emergency if the existing belt breaks and we don’t have the correct size on our truck

Clogged belts are a harder rubber and pulleys wear faster but They last longer. Gates are the best. Continental are also good. Browning belts stretch too much. Great video Chris!

I find it a bit odd that they understand that him doing an inspection and fixing things before they break, while he's there because something broke, saves money. They can't make the step to "have him come once a year and fix things" to save money. Might be corp doing the rules that make such things happen, but not being able to make that step still feels like something went pear shaped.

I see a some of those motor pulleys where the belt is riding very low in the V, which can cause it to grab the belt and shred it, time for some smaller pulley’s so that you can close them up some and still have the same speed to avoid that.

I was actually thinking about those on this video, ended up using those for a go kart that we couldn't find a belt for and they actually worked out alright for it
I always leave an old belt in as a spare if I don't have an extra new on hand. I don't leave 3 or 4 of them. That just screams lazy. I have several adjustible belts for temporary use too. Gets you by until supply house opens up. It's saved me from having to call in the supply house after hours several times. I wouldn't be without one anymore.
The Gates brand of rubber belts was first made in Denver as this company developed the V-belt out of vulcanized rubber and cloth laminate to replace the leather bets of old. The manufacturing is done elsewhere on various items other than rubber belts and tires. The headquarters is still in town as the factory was torn down in the 1990's. Samsonite Luggage factory was across the street. I had a few field trips in school to these places during the 1960's. My grandmother worked in that factory during WWII, the only job she had outside the house. My replacement serpentine belt in my pickup is a Gates. Memories.

an old belt can get you/them out of a pinch on a busy night/weekend/bad weather. I don't really see leaving multiple of them in one unit, but then again if they're all the same size? maybe?

Ok, leaving a belt behind is a way to see the history of the unit as far as wear and tear goes, mainly alignment of the belt and cogs... Also helps the newer guy to to see what belt they may need to get on a full blow out. Old guy here. Also never wear gloves around a belt and the cams. I'm guessing this is the low desert of California, probably near near a Chili's or Olive Garden near the Indio Basin.
And also see the failings before...

Cogged belts are for smaller diameter sheaves. When a cogged belt is ran on a larger diameter sheave the power to the band is not transfered and it slips and wares down your sheaves faster. I recommend that you read your Gates literature.

Out of curiousity: How many different belt (sizes?) do you have to expect? Does every unit have a different belt? Is are there things in common? Like: Blower Motors always use Belt XY?
I always roll the belt on. But that is no problem with annually maintained installations.

I need clarification on why companies would not do PM. Do you change belts in cars? Do you change Oil in a company car? Do you wash a company car? Not doing PM is like not maintaining your cars. I know about maintenance and how important PM and routine maintenance is being a family that owned a restaurant.
I was nodding my head at the acknowledgement of 60 being shirtsleeve weather for us, but not for So Cal (or Texas where my sister lives). It's gotta just be what you're acclimated to. I wouldn't last 1/2 hour in the temps you have to endure during the summer.
i used to leave 1 old belt for an emergency spare if i didn't have a new spare to leave. helps in the middle of the night

Yeah, after starting watching those videos I'm really disappointed in my education choices. Especially since they had HVAC in class next door. So satisfying work to do
The thing about not doing routine maintenance may be about budgets, write offs and other bookkeeping stuff. I know in some plases, preventive maintenance has to be planned as a budget for the year, a repair sometimes can be (has to be) booked as part ofoperative costs. In lorger chains or companies, that can be as simple a decission as beeing different peoples departments and thus different departments budgets and in worst case one perartment is just dumping costs to another department to clean up their budget.
Others may also simply get deceived by the illusion "I pay less if I have a repair done every two years instead of paying for maintenance twice a year." It might work, it might very likely as well backfire on you through increased repair costs, downtimes, extras for out of hours service etc. I guess for restaurants uncalculated downtimes might become a real issue.

I hate having to pay to open up a supply house for anything except compressors or equipment. I only have an a size rescue belt on my van but our shop has a stock of random belts for repeat customers, granted their maintenance stock but its pretty handy in a pinch late at night
Out of curiosity: how many different sizes would you need for all your current customers and what's your reason for not keeping (most used sizes) spares in your truck/shop? Also, is there a differences with automotive v-belts (buy at autoparys shop that are open every day)?

Tested and balanced so many of those exhaust fans over the years. Notice how hot the motor 'feels' along with maybe a tach and amp reading. Run into motors riding in the service factor after start up was done to many times.

wow, very rarely do i see toothed belts come apart like that... i have a lot of clients who won't call for issues they have, they save it all up for the service visit then expect me to fix everything as part of the service.

Im always in two minds about leaving too many brand new spare belts. So often they just end up in the trash because by the time they are needed they either cracked or just no good from being up in the hot machines for months on end.
Also never understood why people like 10 dead belts in the machines too. Maybe leaving one or two of the best old ones of each size with maintenance as 'friday night' belts is a good idea. But i swear some techs just treat machinery and the roof in general as a rubbish bin!

Considering I’m paid by the hour, I have no problem if the client doesn’t listen to recommendations the first time around in getting all belts inspected.
If the client doesn’t have the sense to listen then I don’t have the sense to feel bad about adding hours.

because old belts are better than no belts.
The problem there is in my experience in a different industry there is nothing more permanent than a temporary repair. An old belt may get them going but what usually happens is once it’s going nobody bothers to actually get a new one.

@@richardbartlett6932 if you are a tradesman you do work to the standard that you wish to have for your company. You don’t do high quality work for one and garbage for another. You do the best you can within the limitations of what your customers are wanting.
No excuse period for poor quality service and workmanship.
@@richardbartlett6932 I actually forgot the other thing that happens. You put the old belt on to get the customer going and then in a month or two or however long it breaks and the customer will complain saying “I thought you fixed it?, I’m not paying for that”

Are Ax-20 belts worth enough that you'd spend space in your van to carry some, so that you might think of getting a BULK of them, spreading them over every van, just to be able to use the ax20 belts?
How much of a discount is the supply house going to give you for buying in bulk? Then the supply house that is closer than the shop might not stock that weird size anymore because no one seems to need it anymore.
Where I'm at there is one shop that repairs Milwaukee tools same day. School pointed out that repair work doesn't keep the lights on, so buy your tools from there.
Support the local supply house, else you are the one buying in bulk and basically start your own supply house.
Was the grease gun broken you changed the belts but did not grease the bearing big picture

Continental and Goodyear make the best belts. Not the biggest fan of Browning. If the belt im taking off is in good enough condition i will leave that as the spare...that way there isn't a 4 year old belt as a spare. If no spare or the belt being removed are both crap.....2 new belts...1 to use and 1 as a spare. I tend to put belts in a bag of some sort to protect them from the environment. You have to be careful to make sure the bag wont come off...it saves them while just sitting around. Or I'll put the belts down in the building by the hatch

The cogged belts are meant to go on smaller than normal sheaves specified for that belt.
The heck. Early 22 is OLD for a belt in your job ? I commented this before - now i am 100%. These things have to go away. Cant you just contract with a local plasma cutting company and start making direct drive conversion kits or something like that. Having to change belts that often is crazy talk. And the worn pulley. Someone ought to make pulleys from something like 1.2080 (ultra abrasion resistant tool steel ......mwahahahaha). I suspect it is the short belts that break the most, right ? More revolutions of the belt per revolution of the pulley.......

Exposed Plastic (conduit) does not belong on the roof
Is the PVC available in America exceptionally crappy or something? UV resistant PVC conduit is used for spouting and electrical everywhere in my part of the world here in New Zealand. Also all outdoor electrical boxes here are IP rated for dust and liquid intrusion.
Ask these customers that are somewhat reluctant for regular service? Ask them if they would like to spend less on getting services done on a regular basis and instead of poor service the rest of the time.
Your slow season of only working 40 hrs per week as opposed to the 60+ hrs.
