It does make me wonder about all this detailed training analysis. In the early, mid 80’s we just ran and so many lads were running sub 50 ‘10’s etc . Periodisation was the key , long term scheduling through the winter, spring and summer . Training was so simple . Winter ladened with XC , long road races and longer reps , spring relays and shorter races, summer track ! Oh and a sub 2:20 marathon 😂.
I did a lactate test. He said i couldnt get to LT2 due to very poor mechanics. Got an accurate LT1 which I'm working on. These were off 3 min intervals. Tester said i had little else to gain aerobically but drills and form were the key. Interesting results.
Wow, I've done LT1/2 testing before via the met cart based on HR and RER, and it was much less clear on the demarcations for LT1/2. Throwing in the lactate strips really makes the boundaries pop out. Might have to force the lab I test at to incorporate that for my next test, since it's been nearly a year since my last LT1/2 test, and concerned things have moved based on increased fitness and age. Thanks for the content!
Thanks for watching. I think the most complete data would be having a met cart showing RER and taking lactate measurements. That's what I want to do next. I'll be really interested to see my fat/carbs utilisation at different intensities too, especially with it being so important at marathon pace.
Great video as ever Matt. Thank you for the clearest explanation I’ve seen for LT1 and 2. I finally get it! Much appreciated. Please could you share the details of the device you use to measure your lactates?
Hi Matt loving the series and really enjoying watching the build to Manchester, so just out of curiosity do you work full time alongside the UA-cam stuff? Must be a massive job juggling everything and still getting training in 👏
Thanks. Yes I work full-time and do some content creation too. There's plenty of people do more training than me and juggling more. I find it mad some of the age-group triathletes doing 20 hours of training or more a week, a full-time job, kids and some make content too. Huge respect for everyone juggling stuff to pursue whatever their goals are.
Couldn't agree more!! Seeing everyone on their own journey to reach their goals is super amazing!! Best of luck with the rest of the block, I will look out for you on course at Manchester. 😄
Super interesting, really appreciate you sharing this. So if you are pushing a 15:00 5K do you feel like your lactate is 13? or was this an effect of fatigue?
Thanks. Tbh once I’m beyond LT2 everything feels hard and I’m not worried about predicting lactate levels I just know they’ll be high and climbing. The bigger the aerobic base an athlete has the better equipped that athlete is to clear lactate so even at high intensities they shuttle and clear lactate.

You're right running is a very simple sport really. Enjoy it in whatever way you wish.
Thanks Matt, interesting throughout.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks.

Thanks. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I use a Lactate Pro 2.
DATA. GRAPHS.... LOVE IT
Wait until I do the same testing on the bike 🤯

Hi Matt. For the HR values, is that max or average (for the LT1/2 data points)?
Great question forgot to explain this. I took an average of the last 2 minutes of each 4 minute step to plot the HR.
@TheWelshRunner thanks Matt, and thank you for the video 👍

interesting results. What would you say your max heart rate is?
~190. I’ve seen it at 194 at some stage but I don’t think I can get it that high normally.
Love the video keep up the work Matt!
Appreciate it! Thanks mate. Hope your training is going well.
@@TheWelshRunnerThanks, yes got a 10k in two weeks and all looking good for a PB. Best of luck for Manchester
What lactate tester do you use?
Lactate Pro 2
Is the difference from Lt1 to Lt2 about 25sec?
The difference will vary from person to person.
