The USC Trojans - an Underachieving Dynasty

- In this video we cover how the USC Trojans dynasty led by Pete Carroll went from an unbeatable wrecking force in the early to mid 2000s to a team that played down to their competition losing games as huge favorites which cost them many shots at the BCS National Championship after Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush left for the NFL.

USC should've won more Nattys under Pete Carroll but they sometimes played down to the level of their competition!!
No matter how good you are, someone will sneak up on you and give you a scare at least. That’s what makes the regular season of college football great
I don’t call either one of the two Oregon State games “playing down”to the competition…USC literally got punched in the mouth by the Beavers in both of those games and couldn’t beat them at their best.USC was all time great but were far from unbeatable. The Big 10 was so trash against the Trojans during the Pete era 😂.Oh yeah and as an LSU fan the Trojans could’ve beaten any SEC team too as they showed against Auburn.I never hated USC for being great they were legit!
@@terencew7716 ex pac ten conference all had california & west coast athletes , big ten football teams rosebowl was like a home game for pac ten football team ucla& usc it used to be usc home field
they still do that shit this day 🥲makes me mad
Problem was back then not winning every game kept you out of the Natty
In 08, they lost an early close game to OrSt...only made the Rose Bowl
Now there are more opportunities to get a natty with a early week 2 or 3 L
The question should be: How many National Championships could USC have won if they didn't squander so many opportunities? Losing to teams that you should beat are a perfect indication of this.
To be fair, the BCS was pretty bias during those years. Take 08 for example where both them and Florida lost but the Gators got in even though their loss was at home
@@kylegross1081
And to be fair, bias didn't play a role in USC losing to teams, they should've beaten. That's a lack of focus, complacency, not taking your opponent serious, and thinking you already have the win in the bag before the game is played.
@@marcusmosiahgarveysr4310Absolutely. USC has always had better resources and better talent than the other PAC 10 schools, so they have no excuse for losing those games.
Usc football has a super great fight song& great cakifornia weather& beach etc etc but it not enough to keep cakifornia athlete like endorsment money
@@marcusmosiahgarveysr4310 Alabama& nick saban was a great example of that, SEC teams steal one of nick saban top assistant coaches kirby smart& georgia& texas am got jumbo fishet etc etc etc etc ,,NFL teams do the same thing etc etc
Pete Carroll not handing the ball off to his most dangerous player in his college AND NFL teams with the title on the line is one hell of a study.
"The numbers said…" "bull shit bruh, you had 2 of the most dominate players at their positions and refused to put it in their hands. Did you have money on the game or what???"
One of the few videos that actually details the real happenings of the Pete Carrol era at USC. Only wished you highlighted how they’d travel and dominate non conference opponents early in the season but never got the benefit of the doubt in the BCS system smh
Thank you, hope you liked and subbed!
They never got the benefit of the doubt because they found ways to lose to inferior opponents year in and year out. Never mind the Reggie Bush thing, but here are the facts:
2003 loss vs Cal
2006 loss vs Oregon St
2006 loss vs UCLA
2007 loss vs Stanford (a 6 TD underdog at home mind you)
2008 loss vs Oregon St
What do all those teams have in common? They were UNRANKED.
For perspective: Alabama under Nick Saban from 2008-2013 did not lose to a single unranked opponent and that’s why Alabama won 3 BCS titles while USC won 0 (officially)
@@PeteyThePanda Alabama under Saban did not lose to an unranked opponent between 2008 and 2021. I think you might have had a typo with the numbers in your second year. Good point though.
@@rypo59 you’re right but I meant to say 2013 not 2012 or 2021 because I’m talking specifically for the BCS era which ended in 2013.
@@PeteyThePanda okay but look at the teams that made it in the title game instead of them. In 2007 LSU loses the last game of the season to unranked Arkansas at home where as USC didn’t. 2008 USC loses on the road to 9-4 Oregon State where as Florida loses AT HOME to unranked 9-4 Ole Miss. also worth noting in 2006 USC went into Arkansas and put up 50 on them beating them by more than 5 TDs. That same Arkansas team made it to the SEC title game and was within a field goal of Florida in the 4th quarter, lol. Arguable every USC team would have beaten the national champion from 2006-2008
Also to note bc no one mentions this, thing i love about USC, OSU etc is when they were on top they were never afraid to travel to the south etc to play the best. You never seen BAMA go up north to michigan or go out west.. they never left the comfort of the south.
Bama beat USC by 50 in 2016 and destroyed Washington in the playoffs later that year. The SEC has matched against Big10 & PAC many times.
@@Amocat1SC has never once played an FSC school, while bama plays them all the time. SC always has hard non conference games, this year they have to play LSU and Notre Dame.
@@Amocat1and that 03 SC team went to Auburn and beat them when Auburn was ranked 6th in the nation, you played an SC team that was barely ranked. SC destroyed Oklahoma 56-19 in the title game, that 04 SC team would beat any bama team. But bama is the better program because they built the best football dynasty ever
I will say Bama had a home and home with Penn State around 2011 which means they did go up north
@@TRockNFL yeah, bama definitely isn't scared to play anybody, idk why people think that, I just think that the team that isn't scared to play anybody no matter how hard the schedule already is, is SC, I mean playing LSU and ND non conference and never playing any FCS teams is pretty impressive, no free wins at SC
They won multiple national championships and stayed relevant for the 00s. Any fan base would take that success.
True. If you give them 2003. But I think their legacy would be better if usc went to bcs title game, so would have undisputed back to back with 2004. But USC, LSU and Florida were the big dogs before Alabama achieved all they had. I would put all time greatest teams as:
#5 1995 Nebraska
#4 2001 Miami
#3 2005 Texas
#2 2004 USC
#1 2019 LSU
(2020 Alabama had some high margins of victory, but thanks to Covid restrictions and empty stadiums, 2020 had historically bad defenses across the board
This video is a great example of why the SEC NEEDS to start playing 9 conference games. the free win they give the entire conference while the Big10 Big12 and Pac were playing each other really skews the results of a season. USC lost some games that it shouldve won, and that compromised their chance at a national title. The SEC wont even let those games be played
Back then, most of the leagues played 8 games. Issue was that the SEC, typically, had more than one National Contender while USC was usually the only flag bearer for the Pac12 (Cal was good in 2006 and Oregon started to come on in the late PC era). SEC had Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and LSU all in contention most years so they had more "big" matchups on their schedule. Not always. Remember 2004 Auburn was left out in favor of USC and Oklahoma.
@@volbound1700 10000
Oh cry cry.. the sec is by far the best conference from top to bottom.. you want them to play one more conference game when other weaker conference play one more than the sec? When everyone else starts beating the sec in national titles in a regular basis then you can make that moronic statement
As someone old enough to remember the Pete Carroll and USC dynasty, this video is 100% accurate. How old are you bro? Your voice sounds like you are too young to remember this era.
Yeah I’m just 18🤣, I watched a ton of old games and did a lot of research in 2020 when everyone was stuck at home so now we’re here
@@TRockNFLI figured cause you said unranked Appalachian state lost to Michigan. At that time, Appalachian stage was an FCS school but were ranked in FCS rankings.
Onepeats generally aren't considered dynasties
There was no USC dynasty.
@@michaeloffgrid USC owned the 2000s. youre either too young to remember or too spiteful to admit it.
Loved this USC era ❤
they would have made the four team playoff in the following years
2003
2004
2005
2008
And with the current 12 team playoff they make 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08
Keep in mind that USC played for the title in 2004 and 2005 and is recognized as split champion in 2003. 2008 is literally the only season USC fans can cry about.
@@TRockNFLBill Connelly from ESPN, who developed the SP+ rating system, had USC #1 based on his calculations 4 times in that stretch, I believe. So if you want to go off that as an indicator of who the best team in the country was in those years, they probably win another and win as many as 4. Of all the teams in the history of college football that had a run of sustained excellence, they probably would've benefited the most from a playoff.
USC has a winning record against every Big Ten school lol it’s so easy tell how many of y’all are under 30 years old in these comments
USC has had a 15 year drought of greatness all big schools and franchises go through it from the Steelers to Real Madrid, Brazil the Lackers. It happens cant win em all. USC is still my favorite and in my opinion the best to do it 03-05 was insane(possibly goated) & 05-09 was close but fell short.
3:22 Haunts me. Honestly, Notre Dame was better off letting Jerrett score, knowing USC had no defense that season. Even Leinart said it was a good thing Notre Dame tackled Jerrett and even admitted Notre Dame would've been the team that scored last if that happens.
Yep that was the worst defense USC had in the Pete Carroll era statistically. Granted they were 31st in the country I know for sure USC fans like me would kill to have that defense right now.
@@Nick_Simpson007 It definitely is better than the Lincoln Riley defenses😆🤣I'm curious, how could your boy Pete forget he had Marshawn Lynch in the backfield? I mean he screwed himself out of a dynasty at Seattle.
@@Nick_Simpson007 What killed your defense in 05 really was youth. Maualuga, Cushing, and Matthews were on that team, but they were learning the job still. Fun fact I did talk to your boy USC-J and John Walker on the Notre Dame preview last year. You should subscribe to USC-J.. He's a cool dude.
I remember there was a huge rivalry between SEC fans and USC at the time (notably 2003 LSU and 2004 Auburn versus USC teams at that time. 2006 and 2007 were other years). USC would have done a lot better with a playoff setup and it would have been great to see USC playing LSU in 2003 and Auburn in 2004 instead of Oklahoma being in the title game. In hindsight, this is forgotten but I remember message boards at the time talking about this rivalry going on. USC fell off and SEC got taken over by Saban so it is mostly forgotten today.
USCs loses pathed the way for Florida in 2006, LSU in 2007, and again Florida in 2008. USCs regular season meltdowns are solely responsible for the SEC taking off the way it did in the mid 2000s, crazy to think about.
Had USC taken care of business it’s
Ohio State USC 2006
Ohio State USC 2007
Oklahoma USC 2008
Glad that didn’t happen seeing how SC dominated Ohio State in 2008🤣
As a UCLA fan, USC would've had at least 4 total championships if the playoff existed. It's hard to call them underachievers when the Pac-10/12 was a notoriously difficult conference to run the table in. But the 2008 squad was definitely snubbed and should've been in the Natty.
They should name the play offense only gameplay option after Lincoln Reily
Craziest what-if from this season with USC is that if they had lost that game @ ASU, ASU ends up in the title game with Mizzou losing in front of them and only having 1 loss.
Great vid and edits
Thank you, hope you liked and subbed!
they win at least 4 w a playoff

USC no doubt would have won 4-5 championships if playoffs existed then.
I'll never forget that 2005 ND game. The Bush push was illegal lol
Usc goes according to the quality of their coaching. Carroll's ego deep sized usc when he ran off chow. Usc is still recovering from this colossal mistake.
haha This is cope. 08' USC the ONLY team in America to play 12 power 5 game for their schedule. Lose 1 game on the road to 9-4 Oregon st by one score. UF loses at home by 1 score to 9-4 Ole Miss...
Yet somehow UF played in the title game over USC. It wasn't underachieving... it was eastcoast bias that left USC out of 3-4 BCS title games.
Floridas final game before BCS selection day was a win over the #1 ranked team in the country Alabama, so you can you really say it’s east coast bias, you compare one loss teams but one just beat the number one overall team
Without Percy Harvin playing too
@@TRockNFL they only got in because Tebow cried after the game and made a speech. USC had the best defense in the country deserved to be in
USC would’ve gotten raped by that Florida team. NOBODY was beating the SEC from ‘06-‘12
The 06 and 08 Florida teams demolishes USC any day of the week. Both had outstanding defenses and an arsenal of weapons on offense. Ohio state in 06 that was so strong got decimated and Oklahoma in 08 scored 60+ points 5 straight games and only managed to put up 14 vs Floridas defense. Those years USC wouldn’t have won but other years you have a case to make like over LSU.
Commenting as a salty Fresno State fan 😅, but that part where you mentioned that SC didn't have a true test the rest of the 2005 season before the Rose Bowl is slightly false as #16 Fresno State was leading at USC in the 4th quarter later that year. Of course we all remember that game as the 500+ yard Reggie Bush game. A great era of college football
Underachieving dynasty you say? Listen to all those accolades and accomplishments Pete Carroll accomplished in just 8 years as coach there and ask yourself how many schools would sacrifice everything to have what USC had going in the 2000s. You being 18 adds up. You don’t have a CLUE as to how dominate and hated the Pete Carroll era was in the 2000s. You were barely a thought if that when they were dominating
It was underachieving because of the BCS. They should've beaten Texas for starters. Going for it on 4th down twice lead to Texas scoring points. So that would've made two championships. But the BCS kept USC out of the national championship game a couple of years. That's why they had to share a national championship (which is also BS). And let's not forget 08 in which they were snubbed again. They would've beaten Florida or Oklahoma that year. But USC always had that one loss. Whether it was UCLA in 07 or Oregon State in 08. That triple OT loss to Cal. USC should've had 4 national titles during that run. And they probably would've had more national titles if there was a playoff system in place.
They coul've had more championships but they didnt, so
@@Souloftroy underachieving in that they won one undisputed national championship (which was vacated) and cost themselves several chances by losing to unranked opponents.
2003 vs Cal
2006 vs Oregon State
2006 vs UCLA
2007 vs Stanford (a 6 TD underdog)
2008 vs Oregon State
They take care of business in those games they have more than one title (whether or not they would’ve been vacated later on is another story…)
I’m a beaver fan. We may be struggling a little right now with the rest of the pac 12 leaving, but at least I can comfortably know my team owned the “best team in the country” twice and ruined their championship hopes.
All of college football better be glad the playoff wasn’t around in the 2000’s USC might have won 5 maybe 6 titles if it was around then.
As a Lsu fan , USC is always hated for 2003. That was the last time 2 teams shared a visit to the White House. George Bush was making jokes about it so it was all over the news. And who you think has more fans who are Media Personalities? Lsu or fricking Tinsel Town? And man they talked that HEAT. Lsus first natty in over 50 years and they rained on our parade. Yeah there’s a whole lot to unpack there, starting with Garrett Gilbert’s abysmal performance in that BCS title at the rose bowl (he eventually got going just for back to back turnovers in the end).
Then Mack changed the offense and the recruiting misses on Luck, Johnny Football and RG3 came back to haunt them while they were starting Case McCoy, then the Charlie Strong and Tom Hermon hires, an unfathomable downfall from the Mack and VY to Colt McCoy era to whatever 2010 to losing to Kansas in 2021 was

Personally I feel like underachieving is tiny bit of stretch.
Did they win as any national titles as people thought they would or should? No.
But to win as much as they did consistently when every year players are coming and going isn’t something to sneeze at.
Not everyone going to have the career of Nick Saban.
Saban was so great that people don’t talk about the 5 to 6 year run Clemson had during the Saban years that involved getting a national championship.
We seen it enough times especially in professional sports that getting to the a championship and winning even one is never easy or guaranteed.
I mean look at last year? Georgia one of the best teams in the league ended up missing the playoffs because they lose in the SEC Championship game.
Hell let’s say Georgia doesn’t win another title for whatever reasons for years but still win 10+ games a year and make the playoffs for a chance to win a title.
Are we going to say years later that they underachieved during the Kirby era? I hope not because that be crazy.

USC Under Pete Carroll from 2002-2008 Won 2 Straight National Titles (played for a 3rd straight), Won 3 Heisman Trophies, 7 Straight Conference Championships, 7 Straight 11+ Win seasons, 7 straight BCS Bowl appearances (6-1), 7 Straight Top 4 final rankings, Wire-to-wire #1 ranking in 2004 (only team to do it in 21st century), and a 34 game Win streak from 2003-2006. Pete Carroll was 4-0 vs SEC including beating #6 Auburn 23-0 in Alabama, and SEC West champs Arkansas 50-14 in Little Rock. 2-0 vs Michigan, 2-0 vs Ohio State, 8-1 vs Notre Dame, and 10-1 vs Top 10 opponents. 🤷🏻♂️
And yet they did underachieve, kinda scary to think about
And I think a lot of people were missing this point, I wasn’t saying statistically or anything in that realm that they underachieved, but the fact that they were THAT dominant and only walked away with one BCS title (two National titles thanks AP in 2003) is crazy. After 05 they crumbled in the one or two games they needed a year to head back to the BCS title and they honestly would’ve won all of them🤣
It’s funny, if you watch the rose bowl games in 06, 06 and 08. Every single year when those games reached a blowout you’d hear Brent and Kirk saying, “well how much would you want to see USC vs the winner of (that years BCS title).”

The question we need to ask: why was Oregon State such a huge underdog in either 2006 or 2008? They finished 3rd in the Pac and in the top 25 of both seasons, and the 2008 squad would see seven players taken in that year’s NFL Draft.
Idk about underachieving they were as dominating as it gets over that period. Problem is they’re compared to bama under saban and anyone looks bad compared to that.

Bad Quarterback development, mediocre defensive development, BCS bias, and losing games you shouldve won at the end of the Carroll era led to massive underachievement at USC. Despite that, 2x natty, 7x conference, 3x heisman in 8 years aint bad either.
They won 2 ships n gave us 3 Heisman winners so how did he underachieved?

They only won 1 on the field of play. The BCS had already came in to replace the old system of polls declaring a champion. They should have won another national championship within the BCS
With a playoff system Pete wins 4 at least. SEC and Big 12 teams could afford to play weaker schedules, lose a game or two and still be rewarded with a title birth. USC was not afforded any of these luxuries. It’s really unfair to say Pete Carroll underachieved when he won 2 national titles, 3 Heismans, 7 conference titles and 4 other BCS games in a 9 year span. Especially considering he was excluded from a beauty contest.
They’re easier schedule was their weaker conference. Stay mad at the South hahahahahah
@@anythingthoughanythingthou2453 I bet you think Sam Bradford is better than Aaron Rodgers too pumpkin.
In nearly all SOS rankings, the SEC Champion was ahead of USC. Also 2004 Auburn (undefeated SEC Champion) was left out for USC so I don't see how you guys even have an argument about bias.
@@anythingthoughanythingthou2453nah we just kick the South’s ass 😂😂
@@volbound1700 In 03 USC played a harder SOS than LSU and Oklahoma, and USC defeated Auburn in back to back season…. Coming from a vol fan too? Not surprising the only fan base in the world stupid enough riot over losing Lane Kiffin, live off the coattails of your overrated conference poverty college
dang charlie weiss is mc D's grimmace. FR notre dame won and they took the game away from them
I wouldn’t say underachieving. In college football if you win multiple nattys and rose bowls that’s a dynasty
Should have won 6 NCs in a row and easily broken Oklahoma’s record of 47 in a row. They could have won 75 or more.
They always recruited really good but never made these recruits into stars
The SEC is lucky they didn’t have to deal with team
No mention of FRESNO STATE going toe toe with usc
Underachieving, my ass. Pete had a winning bowl record, a nice win streak and would have had the first three-Pete had it not been for an officiating crew that got so many calls wrong in the 2006 Rose Bowl. By design or just mistakes?
You stopped at a loss in 2006 for a reason, 2007, 2008 and 2009 were all underachieving seasons, well I guess you can excuse them for 09.
@@TRockNFL Hey, if you don't know and want to spew your envy then go right ahead. hahaha
Booty was horrible.. screw what the numbers say.. he had the best supporting cast and always sucked when needed
1 National Championship
Hahaha Lee Corso was way wrong about Colt McCoy
that loss to UCLA look scripted, pete carroll taking money to lose games is what that looked like
Only one natty.
They were the best team in 2006, 2007, and 2008
2007? Nope. They lost to a 40 point underdog AT home
@@chrisuncleahmad666 starting QB got hurt. Can’t think of two teams better than USC that year🤷♂️. Carroll was undefeated vs the SEC and the BCS was protecting them from a USC a$$ whooping

@@chrisuncleahmad666 lsu got two losses but since usc was held to a higher standard they have to go undefeated with an injured QB🤔
@@malcothomas7902 40+ point underdog. At home.
The Oregon loss was one thing but Stanford? Nope nope nope
unchallenged? They opened vs VT in DC (essentially a VT home game) and destroyed SEC arkansas in a game that was over after 8 offensive plays. When have you ever heard of that? And of course there's the game against the cheating Irish in south bend, as well as games vs EVERY PAC 12 team (has bama played Georgia ever in the regular season?).
Focus on the SEC playing the Citadel and UT Chattanooga when you want to mention unchallenged.
By unchallenged I meant the results of games not the competition
Bama played UGA in the reg season in 03, 04, 07, 08, 15, 20 and will this year. Trust me, and I speak for the SEC when I say playing Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Oregon St, Arizona, Arizona St, Washington, Washington St and Colorado does not impress. Just last year SC played San Jose State, Nevada and Louisville. Not exactly killer OOC games.
lmao USC so called greatest teams in school history and cali people still didnt care about football lmaoooooo
lol, what?
Cheated ND 2005
The real falling off happened when they lost Norm Chow as their OC. I hate USC, but that's the truth. If he had stuck around, they would have better capitalized on their talent and likely won more championships. I'm glad he didn't.
Most overrated “dynasty” in the history of college football
Bs. Pete Carroll would go on to two SBs with Seattle winning one proving his methods were special. They got Carroll out of there so Urban Meyer and Saban can shine. Carroll is one of the only coaches to win in college and NFL.
@@vernac86Neither Saban nor Meyer ever lost to a six touchdown underdog at home…
@@PeteyThePanda neither Saban or meyer had a coach on the other side of the field that led an NFL team to a SB.
@@vernac86 who gives a shit? We’re talking college not the NFL. Stop comparing apples to oranges.
@@PeteyThePanda that's the point that underdog you are referring to is Jim Harbaugh. The same coach that had a rivalry with Carroll in the NFL also had a rivalry with Carroll while he was at Stanford and guess who played for Harbaugh in one of those upsets Richard Sherman. Get real!! That Pac-10 conference was also loaded Cal had Aaron Rodgers, Marshawn Lynch and DeSean Jackson on the same squad.
USC would’ve won at least 3 with the CFB playoffs.
