Join us as Dinesh Lekhraj offers a (very) brief history of the Gibson ES-335 guitar and plays through some of its signature sounds, helping you decide if the ES-335 and semi-hollowbody sound is the best electric guitar for you!
The Gibson ES-335, unveiled in 1958, is loved for its revolutionary semi-hollow body design that offers a unique blend of resonance and sustain, blending the qualities of both the Les Paul™ style solid body and hollow body guitars thanks to its dual humbucker™ pickups and 2 x tone and 2 x volume controls. To help with that sustain while still remaining very “open” sounding, you have a solid maple block running through the center of the body, giving the ES-335 its distinctive sustain that combines the warmth of a hollow body with the clarity and sustain of a solid body. This mix of semi-acoustic styling and dual humbuckers also makes it one of the best bandleader guitars, as you get that resonance and responsiveness of an acoustic with the sound and versatility of an electric guitar.
The air movement within the guitar’s body contributes to a larger, fuller sound, with a noticeable enhancement in the tone’s depth, especially in the low end, so it’s great for three-piece bands, too. The semi-hollow design also enriches the mids and highs, producing a sound that’s creamier and more complex compared to solid body guitars, but again, you get minimal feedback due to that center block.

Es 335 is a Semi Hollow Guitar not totally hollow. It has a centre block of Maple which the Pickups, Neck Joint and Bridge are mounted in. Great versatile Guitars which sound fabulous.❤
Why did he refer to it as a hollow body guitar? Doesn’t the 335 have a centre block? I thought the 345 was the hollow body.

Is that actually nice white binding? Looks like it in this video. So tired of aged/cream binding.
I like my solid bodies much better. These guitars look nice, but not for me.
