The Gibson ES-335 is arguably one of the most versatile guitars ever. Referred to by some as the “Burst Killer,” the 335 was introduced in 1958 and went on to become one of the most popular and most imitated electric guitars in the business. But why is the Gibson ES-335 so popular? Why is the 335 considered one of the best electric guitars of all time? In this demo and guide to the ES-335, Dinesh delves deep into all things ES, revealing the seven key reasons why it is so beloved of guitarists of all genres and styles.
Watch as Dinesh explores the seven major benefits of an ES-335, including its comfortable ergonomics, perfect balance, and incredible genre-spanning versatility. Equipped with a pair of humbuckers and independent volume and tone controls for each pickup, there is a world of tonal possibilities, with feedback made controllable on today’s stages thanks to the innovative center-block design. As if that wasn’t enough, it also has a classy look that defies genre stereotypes and ensures you’ll never show up to a gig feeling underdressed.
Dinesh also compares the Gibson ES-335 with a Gibson Les Paul to highlight the differences in sound and feel between Gibson’s iconic semi-hollow and solidbody designs - the perfect comparison if you're curious about which humbucker guitar to buy.

Back in 1964 I was just starting to learn guitar and my mom saw a cherry 335 with a bigsby in a store window, picked me up after school to go see it and bought it the next day. At 60yrs old that beauty can handle surf, rock, or jazz, anything you throw at it, it will chew up and spit out right back at you and smile at you when it's done! Fine peace of work!!!!

I traded three guitars for a 335 in 2021. I took it to my luthier for slight adjustment to the action and to make sure the intonation was just right. It plays like silk and the tone is incredible. While I generally play jazz and blues with it, it is versatile enough to play any genre. Love it! 😎

Hello Everyone! I have two 335 Gibson's, one is 1969 and my other one is a 1994 Flame top and back. They are nice guitars, however, my strumming arm isn't comfortable sitting up that high, and that bums me out because I really enjoy the tone of them both. I have quite a few Gibson's, as they are my favorite Guitar on the planet. Just to give you an Idea I have five custom shop R9s but my go-to has always been The SG. I actually honestly can say I love SGs, they are so light and comfortable and sound so so good. The best part of the SGs is depending on the era they were made they all have their own personality as far as tone/sound. I started playing in 1966 and it has been my only true love. Peace! and keep rocking!

Can we get a studio version? Some of us can live without the high gloss finish and binding and enjoy the sound of 490/498T pick-ups. A 335 Studio with a satin Smokehouse Burst finish would be the perfect partner to a Les Paul Modern Studio.

I got an Epiphone Dot on my Birthday a few weeks ago, I have high end Les Paul and Hollowbody and Acoustic, the 335 really does fit in in a unique way. Sort of more Les Paul than a Les Paul in the mid position. Great design.

I bought my 2001 Epiphone Dot Cherry when it was brand new, still have it. I eventually got tired of the pickups, currently working on double P-rails and a bunch of Freeway switches for maximum pickup options. I do love the feel and look, still, but those stock pickups had brass covers, and I really didn't dig that.

They’re wonderful guitars. Mine was upgraded with Sheptones. I bought a 65 ES330 in 79. Had it until the early 2000s. Fed back but you could just position yourself on stage so it would be minimal. The 335 is definitely THE best all around guitar in my books. Got a ML LP and 72 Tele which are great in their own right but the 335 is a good generalist tool.

I have both the ES 335 and the Standard 60s LP.......to my ears, played clean, they sound very similar. The 335 may be a hair more articulate. But the weight difference is huge......the 335 is so much more comfortable to play for a longer period of time.

I think the 335 is the best guitar Gibson ever made, and this is coming from a LP guy. For me it’s the access to higher frets, balance and ergonomics, and most import clarity of the neck position. I find the 335, like the SG, is a lot easier to tame the bottom end of the neck position relative to, say, my favorite guitar, the LP.
The only thing I’ll say though, is if you’re going to make a head to head using a 335 59 reissue, the representative of the LP I’d choose would be an R9. I’m splitting hairs here, because these standards are phenomenal and you picked the 60s that has the BB 61s, which are one of my favorites Gibson pups. Just think a USA standard vs a USA 335, or a Gibson C R9 vs a 335 59 RI would be my natural choices for comparison.
