    the reason the paw paws were bitter and tasted nutty was because they went bad during shipping. fresh and perfectly ripe paw paws are absolutely amazing. super sweet and tastes like bananas mangoes pineapple and raspberries mixed. if you wait a week to eat them, they become bitter and disgusting.

      Pawpaw's have a 24 hour shelf life at the most with a week an a half harvest season. That is why they are not commercialized. Look closely for them on the banks of almost swampy areas in the woods where the canopy is thin.

      @seigeengine 6 років тому +36

      Not really true. Most of the fruits we eat tasted fine before we domesticated them, otherwise we probably wouldn't have kept eating them. Domestication of plants largely revolved around increasing yields, although improved taste is another lesser factor. Fruit are MEANT to be eaten, so they're going to be tasty (to something anyway) by nature. Our modification is basically that we wanted larger fruit, with more nutrition. This is contrary to the plant's natural desire of using as little energy to make the fruit tasty so that it can have more fruit, so it can have more seeds.

      Very misleading. Bananas, corn, watermelon, etc were no where near the ediblity they are now. They either tasted much more bitter or were just difficult to eat (large seeds, unpleasant texture, etc). People then weren’t as concerned with “does it taste like a perfectly sweet tangerine” as much as “can I get calories from this without dying”

The rest of the world did that. ;P Plus Papaya's were probably smaller centuries ago, before the whole genetic engineering of fruits/vegi's started (on a massive scale -- I don't mean the general way we've always done that stuff.) A smaller Papaya would look very much like a PawPaw.

    • @alleng6196
      @alleng6196 6 років тому +29

      Are you that confused?? The majority of GMO crops (10) include soy, corn, cotton, and some others in this link: (www.bestfoodfacts.org/what-foods-are-gmo/)!!! Banana's are seedless through human selection. Proof: (www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/01/13/iowa-trial-of-gmo-bananas-is-delayed/21678303/)!!!
      Also, if you do some actual research instead repeating what many other say, you'd come to the same conclusion as me. GMO are not all that bad! The only problem is when big companies hold patents on genetically improved crops. Genetically improving organisms only speeds up the natural process of choosing wanted traits (Corn was once a 3 kernel little grass, but through thousand of years it is what it is now)!
      Also, guess what, there are only 2-4 genetically improved apple varieties (hard to find conclusive reports). AND, most stores will not sell them. And, don't don't tell me GMO foods give rats cancer, their were way too many problems with that study and was likely the Roundup that caused tumors (in a variety of rat already prone to tumors), not the Genetically Improved corn!
      Try to do a bit of research on unbiased websites and form your own opinions! (Don't go to websites like: nongmoproject. com, shoppingnongmo. com, ect)

    • @Dockhead
      @Dockhead 6 років тому +8

      wew wew wew no need to get your nickers in a twist is there no one complained about gmo fruits just most people dont know about gmo anything and then try to attack you for suggesting what it is or how it began, almost like what your doing but the polar opposite. gmo organics were made to be easier and just help the general population to eat the fruit & veg there is without destroying it and removing alot of fibres to just be able to eat the flesh of the fruit or veg that they have.
      id destroy my brain if i had to de-seed every single peice ground grown food i eat, its bad enough we still have grapes that are seeded i honest dont know why they taste exactly the same but 100% harder to enjoy its more like a task than just a nice addition of vitamins and flavour.

    • @alleng6196
      @alleng6196 6 років тому +10

      But this is were you are wrong though, since in the general definition of GMO (an organism whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there), seedless products are not! They are just created through selective breeding. There are no GMO grapes in the market and have never been.

    They are forgetting that there is a butterfly that exclusively lives off the pawpaw tree. Basically extinct now because of habitat loss.

    There was a folk song we learned in elementary school (think '50s) to which the chorus ended Way down yonder in the paw paw patch. I don't think I have ever seen one.
    There are also two species of persimmon one from Virginia and one from Texas, which are native to the US. I have seen the eastern one, but never tasted it. There is a story that Stonewall Jackson, known for the long fast marches of his troops, came across a persimmon tree, climbed into the tree from his horse, and perched there eating the fruit while his soldiers marched past.

    Paw paws are one of my favorite. My parents are lucky enough to have several of the trees growing on their farm in Ohio. In terms of bitter taste-don't eat the peel! The bitter taste comes from the peel. My parents and I have always described it as tasting like a vanilla banana custard. Where they get nutty from is beyond me.

  • @az197

    All they need to do is genetically modify the Pawpaw so that it is sweeter and more sustainable so that it can be the next orange (genetically cultivated Pomello). Their natural insecticide trait would benefit a lot of other tree fruits.

    • @allanrichardson1468
      @allanrichardson1468 6 років тому +17

      AZ It might be useful to plant pawpaw trees at the borders of fields of other crops to keep insects away. Also to make organic insect repellent from pawpaw bark when the trees are pruned. And if the fruit can’t be stored and shipped, it would make a nice treat for the farmers and workers. But there would be opposition from Monsanto and other big chemical companies.
      One thing wasn’t mentioned in the video, however. Plants containing toxic or irritating compounds in one part often have them in other parts. As a teenager many years ago in Miami I picked some mangoes from a backyard tree. I learned that I have an allergy to the oil in mango skins, so I can’t handle or prepare them. I can eat the pulp after it has been peeled by a non-allergic person and the traces of skin washed off, and I can eat food products containing mangoes, but I can’t pick one up in the store.
      Has anyone checked whether something like this could be true of the pawpaw, since it has insecticides in the bark?

      Allan Richardson No clue, but as a safe bet id just stay away from them unless your looking to plant some for a farm you might run or be a part of! Google is also a great tool I suggest you use it! :)

    I'm from West Virginia (which has a town named Pawpaw), and they're pretty common and delicious. Fried pawpaws are amazing, and like a pawpaw-mustard glaze on pork loin will knock your socks off. They're pretty alright just right off the tree, but you can use them to make absolutely delicious food/wine/brandy/preserves, etc.

    After hearing about these, it took me years to actually get my hands on some. It's a custard like fruit, with hints of banana and kiwi. Kind of tropical. Over or under-ripe paw paw are horrible. The seeds are obnoxiously large and are as hard as rocks. I had piece of paw paw cheesecake and the paw paw festival in Winston Salem, NC. It was truly amazing. I planted some seedlings two years ago, so maybe in a few years I'll start seeing some fruit.
