I’m one of the lucky people who was old enough to appreciate Mr. Newley. He is a joy to watch besides listening to his lovely renditions of many great songs. 06/2024
I'm old enough to remember him quite well, but always found him so cringe & over exaggerated. Hated his appearances on Ed Sullivan. Just shows everyone has diff likes. I can't stand more than a couple of songs sung by Bob Dylan who is super popular..
And this, dear Millenials, is why the dross churned out by Simon Cowell's acts will all be forgotten in 50 years, and Anthony newly will still be here.
You could not say this better. Totally agree. This performance is magic: the voice, the face, the body, the hands... and obviously, the empty soul of a desperate man.
For the less intelligent that can’t seem to grasp the style it’s the musical interpretation that allows the listener to suddenly grasp the internal visual that quantifies the entire experience Tony was so genius at giving through the song itself . Emotion creates a variety of experiences if you’re that good in a 3 minute song ! That friends is known as genius
To all the detractors on here: Tony Newley died in 1999. He was one of the most talented, creative, and prolific composers/actors/singers/writers ever to come out of the UK. I very much doubt if any of his detractors have even seen him perform, and are therefore hardly qualified to judge. You've been watching Tony's cabaret version of What Kind of Fool Am I. He wrote the song. He sang it in the West End and on Broadway and in Las Vegas hundreds of times. I have witnessed and appreciated his talent in all these places. In more intimate cabaret rooms, he felt he could relax a little and parody himself - all part of the entertainment, and very entertaining it was. He had a unique sense of humour which is clearly neither understood nor appreciated by some of the people who've been unkind enough to write abusive comments on this page. You are of course all entitled to your views. So am I. His body of work has been amazing right from the time he played the Artful Dodger in 1948 and throughout his subsequent career. Other entertainers can only dream of equalling his achievements, and very few of them are ever likely to do so. In my opinion, Tony Newley was a genius, and that's that.
captaintanfastic My first contact with Anthony Newley was his film "Idol on Parade" and was I ever hooked. I had enjoyed his earlier action films but this was a huge new dimension where he only got better and better.
+Rod Barry Wow. Me too. I adore that song. However, although he is a great performer, I like Sammy Davis Jr's version of "Who Can I Turn To" better. The best I've heard so far is by Don Smith. I have a recording (a demo) from the late 60's of him playing piano and singing, but I don't think it was ever released. What is your favorite performance of that song?
And I would guess that captaintanfastic inhabits experience that would put all of us amateur critics to shame. I agree w every word and nuance you've set forth! Thank you for giving us this compassionate understanding of a beautiful artist.
I knew Tony Newley personally, and my brother was a very close friend to him. Before I met him, I, too, thought he had a strange way of singing with that wide vibrato and the mannerisms. And then I saw him live in Atlantic City, and he was magic. A genius songwriter and a masterful entertainer. The emotion he put into his live performance was incredible, and the amount of music he wrote is astounding. Plus, he was a fun person to hang with---a great joke teller, too. And what a laugh! Of course, he was also an excellent actor. Put him down for his mannerisms if you will. But I bet you never saw him live. My brother, Ric Stoneback, was in the cast of Tony's last musical, Chaplin. They became fast friends. In fact, my brother just returned from London where they (finally) unveiled a memorial plaque to his great talent. He left us way too early.
A singer of the old school, oozing class. And he wrote it too. Frank Sinatra was great but he didn't write the songs he sang. And Mr Newley was no one-hit wonder, he just kept producing one masterpiece after another. Brilliant.

David Bowie loved this singer and channeled Anthony's stylings into his own unique sound. It's been so long since I heard Anthony sing... I completely forgot how fantastic Mr. Newly was.
One can appreciate the artist and still accept that he has human foibles like the rest of us. Sure his delivery of this great song can be questioned but he has given us a stunning gift and he in return receives license.
I first saw Mr. Newley when I was about 14ish when he was in the film Oliver Twist. Who would have guessed even with his talent all those years back, (I am now 85) that he would have become even greater than he alone would have guessed? thank God for UA-cam, although he is gone forever, these images of Mr Newley and his music will be with us for many generations after all of us at this time have moved on and into nowhere. God bless you Mr Newley for the music, the songs and the films, may you live on in the hearts of people FOREVER. (Clive & Pamela).
I had the good fortune to see "The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd" many many years ago. Anthony Newley was, and remains, one of the greatest performers I've ever seen. He was an amazing entertainer and so gracious to the audience after the lights of the play went down. God Bless him.
I always loved Anthony Newley; his marvelous voice, his mannerisms, etc. I always thought he was so handsome and sexy. I would have loved to see him perform.
Thankfully got to see Anthony in the 70's at Los Angeles Greek Theater one of the greatest ever in my decades of still active concert going, he was phenomenal and miss him, visit these posts often
I met Mr newley in 1968 with his wife Joan Collins, on a beach in malta, they were filming a scene with a bed on the beach,i might add the police turned up. My father commented on Mrs Collins, dressed as she was in a bikini , as"drop dead gorgeous". He said he instantly fell in love. Mrs Collins was holding me in her arms,i was quite young. Different world then.
He was a great singer and great performer. He was obviously idiosyncratic but that traits was clearly overridden by the way in which he poured his whole heart and soul into his performances.
I thank God for such talent! Magnificent, wonderful, beautiful in every way. Will we ever live to see anything like Anthony again -- and there were many during the golden age of popular music and dance beginning in the forties. Fear not because although there is always talent disbursed in all humanity, what is missing is the determination to do the excruciating hard work required plus the values diminishing beauty to the forces of greed; hence the reason to chase after cheap and sometimes vulgar entertainment. Sorry to be so cynical, but it's what our youngsters have been exposed to repeatedly.
Burt Bacharach loved this guy. Stated he did some shows with him and that Tony was a riot on stage. As funny as Rickles. Plus, he had a great different kind of singing voice. Strange antics he is doing here though. But I can hear he can sing. Great tone.
Back in '76 when I was traveling for a year I happened into a waiter's job at the Diplomat Hotel's Showroom in Hollywood, FL. All the big entertainers of the day would play there. On one occasion, Anthony Newley headlined with Burt Bacharach and they were fantastic. Newley had this marvelous voice and stage presence as he acted out his Broadway show tunes, very memorable spell, unforgettable.
I agree with you in England we have had some great artists and we never honour them for how great they are it really upsets me (if someone wins a sporting event they seem to get all the honours) one day maybe England will be fair (I don's know when) it will soon be too late most of our greats have sadly passed away.
I was hooked after watching him in "Idol on Parade" though he had made a few action movies, the best being "Cockleshell Heroes". A wonderful talent. At first I though he had recorded this in America as I thought the original line was "till I don't give a damn" rather than "like any other man".
+Bill Pollock It WAS "til I don't give a damn"-- saw it on Broadway. I think the original cast album had it as that? And he says it here on the reprise, last line.
Absolutely a one off..the best shownan the UK ever produced...that's why he was so big in America....and that's besides his parnership with briccuse...

I've loved this since I was a small boy when it came out and my parents played it.
And yes...I love this version. 🤗
Genius through and through. The man was magic!

Rich, resounding, powerful, and full of raw emotion just like we love Anthony to give us !
Just once in while a great performer lets us see his talent. Just watch Tony Newly
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!
Anthony Newley was brilliant! When I was in my teens, I saw the one man play he wrote, “Stop the World, I Want to Get Off”
One of our greatest ever singers composers musical icons ok this isnt.his greatest performance but it still has something about it that draws you in
Charisma?
So great to see the live performances. Thank you for sharing!

A huge influence on David Bowie.
David could actually sing AND form the words, at the same time! Newley = crap.

Brilliant
Our late pal, Mr. James Martin "Jimmie" Ford (see Leonard Feather's "Encyclopedia of Jazz") used to start EVERY gig with THIS great song !
In the tradition of the great French singers. Jxxx
Never heard Serge Gainsbourg sound like that.
david Bowie loved tony and copied his voice on early bowie tracks
+kkh369 I read it that he liked how tony sang in a London accect at times
and copied him.
its true
early bowie definitely had echos of newly
+Amanda Wilson --Even a lot of somewhat later stuff by Bowie sounded a lot like Newley. Listen to "Sweet Thing" off the Diamond Dogs album.
+Amanda Wilson Absolutely. People have compared Bowie's singing style to Newley's since day one of Bowie's career.
+Mike Foley Yes. Also listen to "Stay" off Young Americans. It's totally Anthony Newley.
well done to David Bowie he has good musical ears
Wow
Wow and Wow - stop The Wold I Wanna Grt back on
Privileged to see both of his Broadway shows .
I just commented how the hand movements remind me of Shirley Bassey ~ and then I just found out he co-wrote Goldfinger! Makes me wonder if he sang it for her as writers often do to demonstrate… using those hand gestures she then made famous?!

He didn’t.
