I've always just stacked all the pieces with the ends offset by the length of the scarf, then plane down the 'stairsteps' until they're a smooth ramp. Works well and you can do as many piece at once as you like, the more the better.
I like this. I actually did similar with plywood when building a CLC kayak. Clearly there are multiple methods. I half expect to come up with another idea soon. ha!
I like how you can go to a local store ( I think I'm right that it is not too far away ) and get all that clear cedar. It would have to come from a specialist over here. Do you know how many strips you will need for the canoe? I know you won't have to scarf so many when you get to the underside, but there is a lot of work to do before you can get going. PS. I've seen the clue in the background.......
Hi Dale, Yes, we are fortunate with the local stores, except, you really have to pick through the pile to get clear pieces. I make a habit of looking for a good board, just about every time I go into one of these stores, even if I'm just in there for a box of screws. On one occasion I found two incredible boards and asked the lumber manager to set them aside for me. I had to go home and get my trailer! How many strips? I'm going to say somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 but you are right, the bottom or football strips get much shorter.
Such a great demonstration!
thanks for stopping by! there are surprisingly few videos on this
