@@Tonepusher I attended a lecture/performance by Martin Atkins in London a year or two back where he recalled being in the record company office when Al first played him an unreleased reel to reel of what was going to be Ministry's next album A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste He said that on first listen he initially thought the tape machine had been mistakenly set to play at double speed

@@Tonepusher Uncle Al did an interview back in the 90’s where he said he knew a whole lot of thrash guitarists who loved playing fast but none of the drummers could keep up. So he used machines where humans failed. Interestingly I think a generation of drummers didn’t realise that the inhuman tempos in some industrial music was just that: not human. So they learned to play faster and faster. (I know they double kick arms race between thrash, grind and death metal probably didn’t help :D )
I remember reading an old Rolling Stone article about Al Jourgensen back in '91 or '92, and he talked about sampling drums from ZZ Top records (actually, it was an anecdote about having dinner with Billy Gibbon and Billy complimenting how great the snare on the album "Land of Rap e and Honey" was, and Al replied that he'd stolen it from ZZ Top).
oh damn haha that's REALLY interesting, I'll have to find that one. You should've never said that, I'll lose sleep over it XD Sampling was a huge part of old school industrial. I'm sad that it's a bit of a lost art tbh.
@@Tonepusher I don't know if it's a lost art so much as nobody can afford the clearance fees. That said, as some new services that make clearing and licensing easier emerge maybe it will come back. That and the creative worlds of Industrial and HipHop seem to be destined to be rubbing up against each other more and more

I would argue that Juke Joint Jezebel is one of KMFDM's most popular tracks but it is from NIHIL, which only came out in '95. Great call on Smothered Hope though, it is probably one of their most popular songs (amongst fans) and if you're really interested, Ministry put out a singles box set way back and they included a live version of Smothered Hope that they covered. Lastly, it is pretty hard to pick a favorite track off The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Tase but although Thieves may have a steadier beat to follow, Burning Inside has a lot more 'energy' to it for sure.
yeah that Smothered Hope version by Ministry is very cool hehe But I prefer the original. It's also weird to see Ogre singing with Ministry hehe I agree Juke Joint Jezebel is more popular. I prefer Money though haha 🤘🏻
@@Tonepusher Back in the 90's, Ministry, Killing Joke, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM and others were all a pretty tight knit group. They often swapped out members to form different groups such as: Revolting Cocks, Murder Inc. & Pigface, just to name a few. If you haven't heard them, they are really worth checking out.
Yeah I know all of them hehe I even shared the stage with some of them at some point. But I definitely wasn't there in the 80's and 90's though 😂 (I was born in 86)
Thw Ministry album Twitch had some great percussion throughout. Great compilation of industrial you've put together. You've definitely got a love for the genre. Most of these tracks to me will always be timeless 👍

A fantastic trip down memory lane. Big into Front242, Laibach, Young Gods, EN back in the day. I'd suggest Borghesia's "Goli Uniformirani, Mrtui" as another stand-out track.

I heard Ministry's version of Smothered hope before i heard the original Skinny Puppy version. I think it was a live b-side on the Burning inside 12 inch...this was a LONG time ago so i could be mistaken hahaha.) Aways loved the drum sound they used on it :)
Yeah I love the r50e also! The snare sounds on the Roland R8 are insane too. A lot of samples I designed over the years are sampled directly from these machines!

For mid to late 80s Industrial one thing I've done is sample Adrian Sherwood or anything with Keith LeBlanc (R.I.P.) on it. Even sampled old Jam and Lewis produced records, anything from Mid-80s with non-linear reverb samples. Basically pretend its the late 80's and all you had is an Atrai and a Emax (Insert Mac or Akai here). For 90's stuff, any Yamaha, Boss, Roland Drum Machine of that era will do with gated/non linear reverb. By the way I didn't know you where in Nitro/Noize. Shoot out to all the other Noitekk bands.
haha yeah 90s drums are my favorites man! yeah I pretty much composed all nitro/noise stuff and also (in another life) the first Detroit Diesel album. Its funny how 20 years ago I wanted to sound modern and the more I get old the more old school I want to sound 🤷🏻♂️ haha 😂

Great content on your channel! Many useful tips and tricks! Does anyone have any tips doing old school EBM bass sounds with onboard synths on the mpc one? I havent been able to tweak the sounds to my liking exactly yet and its frustrating. I have Hype, bassline and sub factory.

C'mon Wes Borland is badass. Black Light Burns is sick with Danny Lohner. Wes covered Lard's Forkboy which was awesome. Wes is an obvious industrial guy and he wanted to play with NIN but never happened.

KMFDM was big into the Emu stuff around then. I think a lot of it came from the ProCussion, but as usual the ultra-heavy beat processing makes it hard to be sure.
And later 90's they were on the Quasimidi gear. Emu had some nice stuff back in the day. I'll always hold on to my Emu command station for nostalgic fun ha

I swear Uncle Al took those samples from Adrian/LeBlanc sessions for Twitch and used them on LORAH, Sexyland and Steers. Interestingly Mind's drums sound quite different. Different studios, new samples and samplers?
haha Apop is SO good. I love his minimalist but VERY well designed sounds. Also the use of classic drum machines like the 909 or 808. Also the way he was making LONG intros to songs haha
@@Tonepusher - I loved Apop’s album cut of “Unicorn” (with Claudia Brüken of Propaganda), but I *HATED* the video version. They used a rock drummer (stupid) and layered it with guitar, and - no Claudia. Just felt so “off” compared to the studio cut on Harmonizer.
Yeah I feel like that "rock" turn they did wad the beginning of the end. Having this said I think that all of their albums are masterpieces. Well crafted sounds, catchy choruses. But they should've stayed electro...
@@Tonepusher If you haven't checked them out yet, I suggest you look into the Roland TR-707 and the TR-727. SP used those 2 machines for a lot of the drum and percussion sounds on M:TPI.

I’ve experimented with that in my younger days but in a different style of music. Loved seeing you drum live. With the music you make in other videos, you should put an album out. I’d buy it._

The use of cowbell on Front By Front are why there’s an emulator cowbell on almost every Klack track.

a Kawai R-100 or R-50 will get you pretty close to a lot of these sounds, you can find samples for free online

Yeah most bands were into heavy sampling. But some of them comes from actual drum machine samples but modified. I'll check that ProCussion 👌🏻🤘🏻

I think Front 242 were using an R8 at that time?
the R8 came out 1 year after headhunter, BUT some of the drumkits on the R8 are from earlier machines too so, maybe there's sounds on it used by them.
They were using the Roland TR-626. The cowbell in HeadHunter is from that machine.
