I'm really stoked that your Beatles videos have taken off like they have. Watching gives a rare feeling of sharing something you love with someone incredibly open and enthusiastic. I imagine their popularity has taken you by surprise, but it's lovely that your vids don't seem forced and are so natural. I hope you manage to keep the wonder! I think this was a great thing to embark on and ultimately will lead to millions of views - I really hope you continue to enjoy the process and the success it brings.
Ps - not to mention the great platform it gives to put your own stuff out there - go for it!

A Hard Days Night is one to watch. It always features in the top 50 British films, and is described by the critic Ebert as a landmark film. It changed the way rock and roll movies were made and the director is now considered the father of the rock video.

“Which Beatle do you fancy the most?”
My mother once told me that as a little girl in the early 60s, she had these teenage neighbors who would always ask her “who’s the cutest Beatle?” and she’d always answer “Paul!”
For my own part: as a teenager in the 90s, when I first discovered the Beatles, John was my favorite. I was into his darker, snarky personality. When I was in my 20s, I started getting more into George. He was the most talented guitarist of the bunch and also the philosophical one. And quiet as most people say he was, he actually had quite a bite to him (just watch any interview with him, he could be very caustic when he wanted to).
Nowadays, my favorite is Paul. He had the highest vocal range of all and was the most musically versatile. While John and George did the most sonic experiments, Paul was not afraid to tap into classical jazz, showtunes, and other old-school music that his parents raised him on (what John mockingly called “Granny shit”).

    • @zephead843
      @zephead843 2 роки тому +3

Nice comment, I enjoyed it. While they could not have been the success they were without Paul, ( "Penny Lane" being the greatest pop song ever written, hands down) I'll say that when I hear or even think of The Beatles, it's John's voice (and Influence) I hear. I guess that makes me a John guy. To each his own.

Caroline - I couldn't agree more with what Jonathan wrote. The Beatles discography is amazing in of itself, but their stage presence, personalities, and the Beatlemania phenomenon during 1963 (UK) and 1964/1965 (worldwide) added yet another level to the magic that was The Beatles. Please consider reacting to one or more of their live performances (e.g., Ed Sullivan, Shea Stadium, et al). It would be wonderful to watch your response to their captivating stage presence.

If your parents didn't listen to the Beatles, how did your Beatles journey happen? I grew up in the 60's so my parents not only didn't listen to the Beatles, THEY hated the Beatles music and the long hair. BUT, I flipped out when they wouldn't let me go to the Beatles concert in Kansas City in 1964 with the other 5 guys in the band I was in (I was the drummer). I was only 12 and the rest of the guys in the band were 16 and 17. Why? I was too young to spend the night in KC with 5 potentially out of control teenagers. But, the 5 guys came back different, energized, emboldened to take on the world after seeing the Beatles 31 minute concert. Amazing!

Great to hear from you, Caroline. Was doing laundry, turned on my computer and there you were on UA-cam! Congratulations on your subscriber count! If your Beatle reviews are giving you greater exposure so it can help support your own songwriting endeavors, well I'm glad we're helping you there. I agree - good and bad songs at any time in history. Autotune? I'm willing to bet if that technology existing in the 60's, the Beatles would have been all over it - especially John Lennon. They embraced technology and forced a few advances due to their vision. Essentially, Paul was the melody man and John the wordsmith, although there are exceptions. John eventually put a lot of his personal self in his music but take note that his mind was complicated and moody, which made for some crazy, complicated and inspirational lyrics, and his visions for the soundscapes of his songs were sometimes shockingly creative. That's yet to come for you. Paul, in my mind, is an excellent representative of the Beatles and spokesman for them. Both feet on the ground. Incredibly good looking. Very talented. He embraces all styles of music. Lennon and McCartney were a unique team and I feel brought the best out of each other. So if nothing else, the Beatles show that you can create anything you want and if you like it, that's all that matters. Final word of advice - the Beatles were funny and irreverent and bad boys and that is reflected in a lot of their music. You'll see. Best of luck in all your endeavors, Caroline!!

I LOVE some of the top Beach Boys material, but I don't understand Pet Sounds being compared to Pepper. There's very little tonal variety and (just my opinion), it's top heavy as far as good songs. Brian is a genius, but he didn't have a 2nd guy (much less a third) at his level pushing him and contributing to the album.

It is said that Paul was inspired to do Sgt Pepper in response to Pet Sounds. The similarities are that they both are concept albums, there’s a theme to it, and both pushed the envelope with studio experimentation. So when Paul saw what Brian Wilson did with Pet Sounds, he said that he needs to top that.

He said, " That of all the early recordings he was surprised to find as time has gone by he finds himself playing Beatles for Sale more and more." He put it down to this record showing every style of Beatles music. From their own songs to the covers of other artists songs. So don't be embarrassed to find yourself also liking this record. ( Your enthusiasm with these Beatle entries made me curious about what you were doing yourself). Seeing someone younger hearing classic songs that have become almost standards now, is similar to being witness to a person's first taste of ice cream! Finally the friendly rivalry between Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson added to what appeared on both Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper. Of all the songs with the name Caroline, Brian's Caroline No is the best one, so do check into it.

I'm enjoying the comments about the Stones and the Beach Boys. Quite separate and in addition to your analyses of music and lyrics, it is possible to see each Beatles song as part of a conversation among the band, other bands, radio stations, music publishers, and the public. The Beatles were open about it in the early days, referring to one Lennon-McCartney composition as their effort to do an Elvis song and another as an effort to do a Beach Boys song. The Beatles openly tracked the success of other bands and sometimes wrote songs just to demonstrate that they could do what the other bands did. This may seem petty, but I think it is part of the band's magic formula. They were influenced by everyone they copied and competed with.
If you had started by reading a lot about the Beatles and watching some of the abundant resources on UA-cam, you would also be ascribing many of the innovations you like most to George Martin, the father figure and producer who, for example, added the string quartet to Yesterday. The young Beatles took musical problems to Martin, and he mentored them by writing or suggesting solutions. Martin died in 2006. Until the very end, he was the most gracious man, giving the Beatles all the credit despite the contributions he was obliged to acknowledge. Martin was about 15 years older than the Beatles and he was clasically trained.

    Yes, another video!!! :)
Ahh, I actually wanted drop you a DM (but kinda hesitated because I know you are busy and maybe don't have time to answer) and one of the things I wanted to ask was the question that someone already asked here and it was if you get back to listen to the album more times after having reacted to it. That will be even more important later on when some songs sometimes will flow into one another (hope I'm not spoiling too much, it's not all the time, but at certain times it's important), like grow out of the previous one organically so that the individual songs can both be seen as separate units but also parts of a bigger whole.
A Hard Day's Night - OMG YES!!!! If you ever get a chance - please watch it, because it will show you another very important part of The Beatles phenomenon - a certain touch of absurd humor. They're highly enjoyable, both of them, but A Hard Day's Night is the one I've seen most times - stopped counting when I reached sixty - and know the fantastic dialogues by heart.
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - yes! It's AMAZING. It's said that Rubber Soul inspired Brian Wilson to make Pet Sounds and THAT album in return inspired The Beatles to make the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

One great thing you should learn from the Beatles is when you are writing a song bounce it off someone like Lennon & McCartney used to do. They didn't set out to write every song together but sometimes they would have suggestions for each other for the "Middle Eight" bars that were often in a Beatles song.

There's a reason why so many people want you to listen to Pet Sounds. It's a matter of Context. To listen to the pop music of the early sixties is to understand how revolutionary the Beatles were at the time. As they evolved during the next few years, others followed in their creative footsteps, including Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Again, it helps to put things into Context.

John gave songwriting advice to George, to write a song in one sitting, so the emotion and mood have the same continuity. When one of them had a new song, they would then play it to the rest of the group and the song would build from there. They could all add to the song but the original writer would decide whether to accept the suggestions or not.

I love your videos, Caroline. As others have mentioned - you’re a breath of fresh air! I’ve loved the Beatles music since I was 6/7 years old in 1964 so I can’t really listen to them with a fresh ear - so that’s why it’s really fun to hear them again though you. I’m so glad you’re going through all the Beatles albums in order … and I think it will be very interesting if you listen to the solo Beatles as well but I understand if you didn’t want to do that cuz that’s quite a lot of records.
Anyway - thank you for your videos - I’ve watched all your Beatles ones so far and I’m liking forward to each one. I also enjoyed your ten favorites. I happen to be one of those that absolutely LOVES “I’ve just seen a face”. I think it’s a great song! I admit, Yesterday is not one of my favorites but it probably would be if I had just discovered it … but for me I’ve simply gotten tired of it because it’s been played so much in my lifetime! lol. Anyway - it’ll be cool if you do another top ten faves after listening to the next 3 Beatles albums (Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt Peppers) because, as I guess others have mentioned, they’re a whole different “form” of The Beatles. Keep being you! 💕🎶🦋🙏🏽

Question from a Beatles fan here: have you been asked to be in a podcast to share your Beatlemania coverage because, if you haven’t, I’d love to talk to you before you get to the end of the series or perhaps once you’ve covered them all. I have a podcast here on UA-cam and I would be delighted to have you as a guest! Cheers!

I can understand you appreciation but believe me, you give us much more than you receive.

I have to say, this is pretty much the best youtube channel I've come upon ever. I'm glad they are every three weeks because I'm going to be sad when you run out of albums. But, the Pet Sounds gets me thinking about the future. At the time the Beach Boys were the Beatles competition along with the Rolling Stones. You've got years worth of material there as you compare each back to the Beatles. Best to a successful future.

Thanks for this Q&Q, Caroline .. Love to hear your thoughts on anything regarding music.. Your way of discussing it is very entertaining and educational .. As for you picking "Beatles For Sale" as your favourite Beatles album to date, I must say that I tend to agree with you .. It's jam packed with under-rated and under-played songs, and I absolutely love it .. Keep up the good work ! .. Wayne

I look forward to your beatles reactions very much. I strongly urge you to use headphones when listening to the beatles from here on in. They started experimenting with the tools of the studio at this point in their career, especially after they stopped touring and had more time to devote to recording. Without headphones you will miss many subtle sounds, layerings and textures in their works.

You should use that little instrument in your next song. The Beatles did that all the time. They would always search for new instruments and sounds to change things up. And that instrument is definitely different and sounds really cool!

  • @robertcameron2192
    @robertcameron2192 2 роки тому

    Hi Caroline
Thanks for your great videos and the hours of editing behind them. It's great to see your reactions.
As you can see from the comments there are lots of Beatle fans out there all willing to share their enthusiasms with you.
You seem to really like vocals and harmonies which is why you are getting suggestions to also check out the Beach Boys some time.
If you do you will find the early BB albums have more filler (quick takes of simple songs or gimmicks) than the Beatles albums.
However their vocals can be great for example: I get around, Hushabye, Don't Worry Baby, Why do fools fall in love, When I grow up, Kiss me baby, etc etc
Also since you like orchestration you will see from Beach Boys Today! album the orchestration becomes more complex peaking in Pet Sounds.
People tend to either flip for Pet Sounds' carefully crafted instrumentation or dismiss it as "Boring, not rock and roll". Not spontaneous.
Since music is subjective, who is to say what is right? It can also depend on your mood.
I am not saying the Beach Boys are better than the Beatles. Competition in music does not really make sense. Violins are not trumpets. Having both is a blessing!
Anyway we are all cheering you on from the sidelines. We are also starting to check out your other channel!
    Best wishes
    Robert

Caroline, I'm so glad you've given the thumbs up to Beatles For Sale! It's quite often put at the bottom of the pack by Beatles fans - don't know why. It's such a coherent album with a unique sound! It's one of my faves - certainly the best of the 1st five LPs.

  • @nealfig

I have always liked Beatles for Sale. The original songs are great and so are the covers, which they excellent at doing. And, yes, in my mind as well, With the Beatles, while still not too bad, is a lesser album than Please Please Me and A Hard Day's Night. Favourite tracks on With the Beatles are the covers "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Money (That's What I Want)".
Yes, please listen to Pet Sounds. It would be a good one for you to comment on as well, if you have the time.
I highly recommend the film 'A Hard Day's Night'. It is a great movie beyond the great Beatles songs and their performances. It has some funny scenes. Ringo has been praised as a good actor, but they are all pretty good. Some aspects of the film (the look and display of their wit) might have been based on a 1964 documentary about the Beatles' first U.S. visit which was shown on British TV where "[f]ootage of the Beatles (often acting irreverently in front of the camera) in hotel rooms makes up the majority of the non-musical portion of the film." (from Wikipedia article: "The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit").

When I started listening to your assessments of the Beatles albums, I was also going to suggest you listen to the Beach Boys. I believe Brian Wilson was an amazing composer, and the Beach Boys harmonies are pretty amazing. I feel like there are probably far too many Beach Boys albums to review each one, but it might be worth looking at some of them, particularly Pet Sounds. "God Only Knows" consistently ranks very high on my ever changing favorite songs list. Thanks for you time, and sharing your insights with us.

If you're looking to hone your songwriting craft, IMO these are the best artists to listen to:
    Paul Simon
    Joni Mitchell
    Bob Dylan
    John Lennon (solo)
    Leonard Cohen
    David Bowie
    Dolly Parton
If you wanna hone your vocals, you've got to listen to these artists:
    Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
    Linda Ronstadt
    Ann Wilson (Heart)
    Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)
    Paul McCartney (solo)
    Marvin Gaye
    Aretha Franklin
    Freddie Mercury
    Teddy Pendergrass
    Crosby, Stills and Nash
I'm sure all of these brilliant artists across different genres will have a positive impact on your own music

How do you have time to read thousands of comments? I've read hundreds to avoid making a repetitive comment, and they're very insightful, but I can't read all! Anyway, about harmonic analysis: you can't analyze Beatles from diatonic perspective alone. (They broke rules because they didn't know rules existed.) As an example, we say "Can't Buy Me Love" is in key of C (as the opening chorus is), but all chords in the verses - I, IV and V -- are dominant! Same with use of parallel minor (as opposed to relative): they wouldn't say temporary modulation, but it is! A Hard Day's Night has many tunes that play with this jump between maj and min - Things We Said Today, I'll Be Back, the You Can't Do That guitar riff...

Hi Caroline, Subscribed. I am thoroughly enjoying your reactions to these wonderful Beatles albums. I saw them on Ed Sullivan when I was 6 y/o in 1964 and have loved them ever since. I see Sgt. Pepper is up!! and I can't wait to give it a listen. I would definitely love to see your reaction to Pet Sounds.
