The body, frame, cage, etc are SPRUNG weight, IE the weight suspended by the springs. Unsprung weight would be the axle housing, wheels, tires, brake rotors, everything that is not carried by the springs. Drivelines are half sprung, half unsprung because they connect between the two realms. The springs themselves are unsprung weight, as are the ends of the shocks that are attached to the axles.
The pool noodles are a nice touch.

    • @randytolle6706
      @randytolle6706 Місяць тому +7

Beat me to it. "The stuff that moves with the suspension is "Unsprung." Less Mass can react to the bumps more easily and that is the reason to strive for less Unsprung Weight. I had offroad motorcycle racing friends who drilled holes in brake shoes on drum brakes to reduce the weight.
Rock Crawlers tend to benefit from Low Center of gravity and I have heard higher Unsprung Weight can be desirable.
But I am no authority on that.

@@tomtomsshop you give out so much useful information and techniques on your channel. My intention wasn't to be critical, just helpful.
When I first began giving classroom instruction on a technical subject and noticed students taking notes I thought "I hope I am wording my explanations correctly." It can be a bit of a burden when some people assume every phrase you say is completely accurate.

In 2009 I bought a new Polaris quad. It came with an AGM battery. Earlier this year, I sold that quad. It still had the original battery in it, and it was working fine. All of my toys have batteries. I have replaced all of the factory flooded cell batteries with AGM batteries. I am THAT sold on AGM batteries. I have a 1923 T-Bucket. It is 100% hand built. There is a long story, but it was originally going to be a street-legal dune buggy, but to get it titled, I had to turn it into a T Bucket.
I had to cut the fiberglass body in half so I could widen it to fit my frame. When I got to the point of starting the 396 Chevy engine, I bought an AGM battery. This was about 2014. That battery is still in my T Bucket, and it is working just fine.
I also have an Optimate battery charge indicator installed on all of the batteries of my toys and lawn equipment. I can tell with a glance if I need to hook up a battery charger to them. The Optimate also has a handy 12 volt two wire fused link to the battery. I have modified all of my trickle chargers with this same two wire connector, so if the orange light starts blinking, I know that it is time to hook up a charger. You just plug it into the Optimate. It can't get any easier than that.

So the diff control arms wheels tyres shocks and springs are all unsprung weight.
Everything that is held up by the springs is sprung weight.
If you use a fancy canter leaver suspension then the springs and shocks are sprung weight.

When he said that, I was thinking that unsprung was the wrong word, but later he did say he’d have to subtract the weight of the axle and tires, so I think he knew that. Unsprung weight is really just anything below the springs, or anything that isn’t supported by the suspension

Total weight would be the same regardless but if you put the jack on the very rear, as in the video, the ratio of front to rear would be different than if you measured it closer to the axle or center of the vehicle, which is just an extreme example. Same with the cargo, spare, etc. Also, how do you figure the leverage on those long arms when the shock/spring is part way up the arm and not near the axle? Love the channel and all you are doing.

Sometimes it might take 3 lefts to get where you want but left still isn’t wrong.
I worked with a guy in the 90’s who would make 3 right turns instead of a left turn because in his mind it was safer.
Yes. Everyone hated him and he took forever to finish his delivery route even though his route was right where the yard was.

When using rollos make sure the item being weighed is level it will make a difference in CG.

You mean *sprung* mass (weight), Tom; but you know that. It's nice to finally find a YTer who does thing right and actually knows how to use tools.

I wasn't too fussed you got sprung/unsprung twisted. But, why scientific curiousity didn't make you do a four wheel weight first kills me ! A weight mesurement from the front crossmember would have been interesting. Of course, the final, finished weight versus now, would be interesting too.

Sorry Tom. The battery never saved you 😢. Don't click bait us man! Your content is great for those who love it.

I enjoy Tom's style and content but I agree with you on the battery. Nope, it did not save his life. Not a good reason for being devoted to that battery brand.
