This era of the game seems so uninhibited, so fun! Too many flags and rules nowadays, it's sucking the life out of the sport.

Now this is CLASSIC right on down to the broadcast team. The boozy fun of Summerall and Brooksy. You got Sweetness and Dorsett and the great Roger Staubach leading the Cowboys contingent on offense.This is what makes this channel special.

I am a Cowboy fan and I love this era even more than the 90s.
As cool as it is to watch Sweetness and Tony Dorsett go at it, this game certainly wasn't their best day in terms of holding on to the football, especially for Dorsett. Good thing Staubach came in clutch.
Roger was just a level above Danny white. Maybe roger got out at the right time , but I selfishly wished for more years from him

Tony Dorsett Erick Dickerson & Curtis Martin are the most underrated running backs of all time & Sweetness was arguably the G.O.A.T. he literally would put his body on the line for 6 points
Payton would but his body on the line run blocking for his fullback on an ordinary play... there is a reason why I agree with you on GOAT... he did it all.
@@johnliberty3647 Barry Sanders is the greatest running back ever. But Walter Payton is the greatest to ever play running back because of his ability to make receptions and block. But Barry is a better runner.

@@AlexFeri9348I would argue that Dorsett was a better gifted runner than Barry. Dallas didn’t use Dorsett the same way Detroit was forced to use Barry. With that said, Sweetness is above both. Dorsett and Payton did fumble a lot though.
That is a lot of sun coming the old Texas stadium roof. I guess that was before retractable roofs? I ask because this game was before i born 😁
First NFL stadium with a retractable roof was Reliant stadium built for the Texans for their 2002 season opener.
Tony Dorsett had a serious burst of speed, like he could switch gears in a millisecond. I'd forgotten that about him.
Payton I believe had only like 4.7 speed, amazing he could get it done without that kind of burst.
That was Dorsett's most defining quality, how could you forget that about him?

Walter Payton carrying a bunch of bums like he did the majority of his career. Vince Evans...who Chris Berman called "Methuseleh" when he was in his early 40's still playing QB as a backup for the Raiders. Sweetness had NO OTHER PRO BOWLERS ON OFFENSE for the first nine years of his career. No other great running back can say that. Not Sanders, not Smith, not Brown, not Allen, not Dickerson, not Tomlinson, not Faulk, not Dorsett, no one. Payton was a one man offense and still dominated. He's the GOAT at the position and I can't be moved off that.
If Payton had a surrounding cast that was at least LEAGUE AVERAGE on offense he would've gone to/won another SB or two in his career.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Walter Payton barely had 3 runs over 30 yards his whole career. He lacked a 5th gear. He wasn’t even the greatest running back for the Chicago Bears, that honor goes to Gayle Sayers. Who played on worse Bears teams than Walter.
Facts.
Walter always had a good offensive of line, but Walter was not a dynamic explosive open field runner. He some shiftiness, with some hard running, and a lot of heart, but he was never a homerun hitter; he was almost always brought down within 25 yards. Go check the records.
@@readynowforever3676 Um, what are you smoking? I just looked up PFR. Payton had longest runs of over 30 yards ELEVEN times in his 12 year career. I didn't even go through his game logs as i'm sure that number would go up quite a bit.
SPTO I was being slightly extreme, without actually going back and reviewing the stats. But I followed his career along with many others, just going on memory and the fact that I have always been a running back aficionado a connoisseur.
Without checking, or Googling, I’m willing to go on the record and say, he had less 30 yard & 40 touchdowns than any of those explosive backs you named. Walter was more of that first version of Marcus Allen, Emmitt Smith (although Smith had some of the biggest holes in running back history).
Payton could not explode like Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, O.J. Simpson, Tony Dorset, Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, Berry Sanders, and last Adrian Peterson.
In terms of explosive touchdown runs, Walter Payton wasn’t even on the level of LaDainian Tomlinson or Marshall Faulk.
Walter Payton was more like a small Jerome Bettis or a Curtis Martin, same kind of break away speed, which was non existent.
Don’t get me wrong, if I was a GM I’d be proud to have Walter’s dedication & durability on my team (even though he complained like a bitch for not getting more carries in the Super Bowl so that he could get a touchdown).
Whatever you refute that I’ve said, I’d be interested in hearing it.

The Bears hadn't beaten the Cowboys since 1971 at Soldier Field. The Bears wouldn't beat the Cowboys until the November 17, 1985 44-0 shutout at Texas Stadium. Mike Ditka was an assistant coach to Tom Landry during this 1979 game. Coach Ditka wrote a letter to Bears founder and owner George Halas admitting he wasn't ready yet but would like to make amends departing the Bears as a player in a bitter way and be the head coach of the Bears someday.

1970s, 80s NFL was the best. You had a balanced combination of great defenses and offenses. Games were exciting, defenses actually stopped the offense, its not like todays Madden fantasy football.

Walter Payton carrying the load for the Bears of that era. If it wasn't for the two touchdown passes, Vince Evans would've gone just three of 14 for 39 yards. 70s football at its finest.

Vince Evans sure stayed in the league a long time. He was not that good but found a way to hang around. I believe he was the last 70s NFL QB in the league in 1995, before Steve DeBerg came out of retirement! Warren Moon was still in Canada in the 70s.

Bears WR were great blockers, so so receivers. With Walter and Evans maybe that was a good thing.
I always felt in the right system, like the west coast offense, Golden Richards could have been a star. A possession receiver, with great speed. He would have been a slot receivers dream.

My issue with highlights from 25+ years ago is that not having any visual indication of what the score, downage, quarter and clock are leaves you with a rapid cut of plays with very little context. Only sparingly will that info flash on screen or the announcer will mention it in the clip. I wish NFL Throwback would edit in a little ticker to let you know that general info.
Until the NFL allows full games that's probably the best way to do that with the pre "score bug" era games.
Coming from that era, I find all of those extra graphics on the screen seen today distracting. Without them, you got fully caught up in the purity of the game.

Stalls was a really good defensive lineman. Dallas should’ve kept him. Rotate him in and out for the guys who were getting long in the tooth.

Hearing Pat Summerall w/o John Madden feels wrong.
Your youth is betraying you. Summerall and Brookshier were the first SUPERSTAR broadcast team. They were head and shoulders above every other team on the air. Brookshier was an excellent color man.. He and Summerall were best friends, like brothers, and had a marvelous on air chemistry. Their penchant for drinking and carousing after the games caused CBS to break them up. If it wasn't for that, you may have never heard Madden behind the mic.

100% correct that Pat and Tom were the first SuperStar broadcast team. Check out the work they did on This Week In Pro Football. It was pre ESPN days and usually the only chance to see highlights besides very brief ones on MNF.

I lived through this era...watched it.......I love everything about it, including Summeralls dulcet tones.......BUT Tom Brookshires sexual oohs and ahhs are so off putting. He was exactly as I remembered....TERRIBLE!!!
