IM A Australian and couldn't believe they would demolish 200 odd year old infostructure . you stopped them removing the dam wall ., thanks again . keep doing what you do . kids that aren't born yet will thank you for preserving it . wish the buildings were still there , they were the best thing there . somebody needs to go to jail for this attack on our heritage.
As someone who works with water utilities in another state, it looks like there is a damn upgrade project and possible a water treatment plant upgrade. There has to be a water treatment plant for surface water sources, not sure if there is one to be built here or there is one that serves multiple sources downstream. I think the castle building was an old obsolete treatment plant. Maybe it has been out of service since the Safe Water Drinking Act was put in place decades ago?
Great update! It's great that there reworking it and it's not going away, but sad that they didn't keep those beautiful old buildings, they should have saved them and upgraded the dam too. Thanks for sharing the update with us!👍
As sad as that is those buildings might not have been salvageable to update the dam. I'd like to see the finished project to determine if they were salvageable as historic buildings.

You did a great job of documenting what you could, and your previous, older video of the unique stone structures is now an important part of the history of the area before they were demolished. I think the brook will be ok. Those old dams are all silted up. Shame they took down those old stone structures though. I'll be up that way to do some recon on the trout situation shortly.
That is quite a beautiful area and just the expanse of the area and there's nobody in view. Too bad about the buildings it would be the ultimate medieval B&B. The big item if people were to occupy them would be updated electrical water sewer Etc probably way out of the question. Here in Milwaukee they took several dams out but no original buildings to demolish and it has resulted in several miles of better fishing. There also is a section they're removing the side barriers and walls from to help ease flooding. Luckily the dredging was minimal and the one item that was preserved was a flushing station built about the turn of the century the channel Lake Michigan water down a 1-mile pipe to the river where its strong Currents help push the sewage water back into Lake Michigan but away from the drinking water intake. Too bad for the Dismal ending but thanks for the previous footage and historical photos
WOW! What a difference! You're right: that antique building should have been repurposed into a museum or something useful. What a sad loss. Seems no one respects history anymore. As for your drone shots: excellent camera work! Thank you for not going at "ludicrous speed" and making MTV-style, seasick-making "swish" pans over the terrain! You caught some gorgeous shots of trees reflecting in the water; my mother would have loved those as jigsaw puzzles! 😁
After reading about it, I discovered it's the result of normal government operations. PA requires that improvements be made to the dam. DEP gets involved after heavy rain washes sediment from behind the dam into the Lackawanna River and other streams. My point is, if the state required the project, then ultimately, the state must take responsibility for any unplanned or unforeseen problems as a result of their actions.
I had never known this dam was here before today. my dad, who is 95 and grew up in dunmore, was talking about a swimming hole he used to go to that was below ''morents'' dam in dunmore. I googled dams in dunmore and saw a video from summertime 3 years ago and saw people swimming and all the old buildings. I asked him why he never told me it was there. I really wanted to go. then I saw your first video where they were tearing down those same old buildings. I wanted to cry. my dad was upset to see it looking like that. he swam there in the 1930s and 40s. he said there was an area below the dam called bare ass beach for people who couldn't afford a bathing suit. he said they called those pipes in the bottom of the dam ''fish pipes'' and they brought ice cold water to the swimming hole.

Wow. Kinda sounds like they were trying to cut cost and it backfired. Sure did make mess for those down stream. The quality of your pictures are so bright and vivid make it look like a picture for a puzzle. My mom would have loved to put it together too 😁. Thank you for all you did. It sounds like this "pollution" was already in the lake sediment and because of a bunch of karens down stream this site will now not be renovated. oh well!
All of us adventurers and discoverers would love to keep things as they are and to repurpose and renovate them. Hopefully in decades to come others will enjoy the adventures and discoveries they find at this place and other places across the beautiful 🇺🇸 🤗💙. The stories will always evolve and continue long after we’re gone.

I remember when you were there several months ago. What a shame they tore that building down. Must be a reason behind it. That blueish thing that the pipe is attached to looks like a pump of some sort although I have no idea if it is. Loved the drone footage.

Why all the secrets? Hmmm.
(1) It’s criminal that the decision was made to destroy the old 1800’s stone structures. Once their gone they’re gone forever…
(2) Whomever the contractor is should be fined for their lack of housekeeping, railings in the water, debris still laying around…
(3) Inability of the contractor to adequately manage water runoff…
The cheapest bid on a job isn’t always the best choice.

Sometimes things are better left how they are.
Specifically, as far as the camera is concerned, it appears to be a PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) camera hooked up to a cellular network for real time monitoring.
If you look at the TV news drone shot at 19:49, you will see that the reservoir is almost completely filled with sediment. This is why it filled so quickly after they closed the outlets. It holds nearly no water at all. So, from what I read, the contract with DEP to rehab the dam called for PAW to drain the water level down in order to make improvements (PAW obtained a permit from DEP to do this). The only way to do this is to open the clogged outlets. It's very well known that doing this will cause sediment to pass through. PAW had a plan to install some check dams and a rock dam to catch the sediment. But it sounds as if mother nature washed any of the contained sediment away with heavy rains.
So, just my educated guesses here: 1) The DEP wants nothing to do with the expense of hauling the many thousands of cubic yards of what is likely considered contaminated soil (sediment) from the reservoir. They simply want to make the dam pleasing to the eye and structurally sound. 2) Now the state agency that issued the permit acts concerned and the politicians act like they know what is going on and call for criminal charges when, in reality, they should simply state the truth as I outlined (or not, if I'm wrong) and find the money to haul the dirty dirt out. But let's not make a scapegoat out of the one doing the work when the DEP drew up the plan, issued the permit, and knew what it entailed.

I hope they dredged it out, Otherwise it's 90% sediment and 10% water. Almost useless as a reservoir.
From what I have seen PA American wiil go the cheapest way they can on any project,unless local GOV watches them to make sure they do it right.One project they did they put new water lines in and left the road services full of pot holes and rotes the local gov had to make them repair the roads with their having a person over seeing the work.And they have the nerve to ask for a big rate increase.
There's a structure like that not too far from me that was sold to a private individual that they turned into an AirB&B that in peak season goes for a few hundred dollars a night.

It’s funny how they do things drain the lake drain the lake. It has sediment they were just put a small dredge in those lakes pump all that stuff out pipe off if there’s room, they don’t have to do all that most likely there’s room around those lakes for waste dried out make it nice. Re plant minimal damage.
Instead of ripping down the old buildings, they should have used the money to dredge out the reservoir.
The problem with letting old dam sediment flow downstream is that it can contain pollutants from mines or industry from before environmental regulations were in place, depending on the last time it was dredged out.
That would appear to be a valve to regulate the outflow remotely. And yes, that is a camera.
Damn shame or Dam Shame they tore down those historic buildings.

What an awesome update! The castle-like structure was so incredible and like you and most of us said, it would have been wonderful if they could have restored or repurposed it. Kind of sad to think about it, I just love old structures like that. Fantastic footage from the air, it was interesting to see the work site up close as it looks now. The full reservoir looks so nice and the water cascading down over the spillway steps is beautiful. You did an amazing job with telling the investigation story, it was shocking for sure, it sounds like they may be able to rectify the situation working closely with DEP. Really interesting and great video JP, thank you! 💙

They have mud on their faces, so it's not surprising they wanted to do damage control.
WE all know how muddy that posted area is, the reservoir should have been dredged
up there, like you said.
That's stupid but litigation is scary, but you do have all those before pictures, hehehehehehhe!

There seems to be an awful number of junk cars downstream of the dam. I wonder how many U pullers are treating the vehicle fluids and the earth?
I would be more concerned about the toxicity of the vehicle fluids than some muddy water.
It is a real shame they had to destroy those beautiful stone buildings. Wow how beautiful the landscape is there! Still sad abought the stone buildings.
Living in southern Louisiana with an eroding coastline, there are lakes in Baton Rouge which have weirs which have intercepted sediment for over a century. They are going to be dredged. I had proposed that the sediment dredged be blown into the adjoining bayou during massive downpours and sent to the coast. Although these releases would be massive at a few times, the human intervention of the weirs partially causing this problem would be partially undone. It might be in your case that by preserving what is considered clear good-looking water without sediment is working against nature in the big picture. Just asking the question might generate some interesting thoughts from those involved.

Dam removals have been going on for years out on the west coast. What they found is all the sediment that builds up behind the dams that would’ve flowed and dispersed throughout the system before the dam were installed the sediment gets flushed out and re deposited where it would have naturally into the river. This happens very quickly, new gravel bars, sand bars are rebuilt.

I really thought and even hoped the criminal investigation was about tearing down the buildings on the site, which you'd think would had been grade 1 or 2 listed as historical, given they were from the 1800's.
I don't recall all that rubble that far in front of the spillway, it just looks odd the way it is now. Maybe that's where the sediment was coming from and that was their quickest solution. 🤷♀Thanks for the update! 👍Such a beautiful place and a shame about the wildlife.

It would have been cool if they could have moved those structures to a new place maybe near downtown or a historic district. Would have made for nice restaurants serving certain foods similar to ones from that time period they were built. But change is inevitable. Nice drone shots!! Great video.

Always great videos JP. Only 1 point of criticism. I absolutely hate people who talk to me with sunglasses on. Especially the one with mirrored glasses. Why? Because humans, like some animals, can talk with their eyes. Are they honest? Are they fake? You can see the soul in a person's eyes. His or her honesty. Of course, I believe in your honesty, but I find it difficult to look at you. I'm more focused on your glasses than listening to your story. But please keep up your videos, I love them. I wander why they demolished it to begin with. I understand it was old and outdated but, they could've made them into something educational, a possible Greenway. Just keep it closed to the public and not let the public inside the buildings. Look through windows. Just my thoughts.
On another thought, did they have the "clear" to demolish those buildings'? If they didn't, then they'd be in big trouble.
