- We were given this 1987 john deere 318 after it failed in the yard of a subscriber named Dan for us to make videos of its issues, this is the last in a playlist of bringing it back to life after we found bent valves in the onan engine. lets see how it makes out.

Those drive-by's killed me. That thing may have been free but that was a TON of work.
yes but he will probable sell it for 800.00
michel bolduc he is going to keep it to clear snow from his garage driveway
Keep in mind, it was donated by a fellow Utuber.
@@alanwebster3942 you're probable right + the fact that it was donated by a fellow Utuber.
which i didn't no , this guy can do it all
@@marcelcanuck ....I know everything is for sale, but he shows no intention of getting rid of this tractor. This will be a handy tool around the shop. Oh and btw, where do you come up with $800 ?? - just askin!1
For some reason I'm proud of myself for all the work you did on my tractor?
Martin D A he did a great job
By donating that tractor you bought happiness to thousands! Thank you!
I hope you consider fixing the mower deck someday, just for those who want to know what all it takes to restore it.
I also hope you do that snow blower video later this year.
Finally I recently lost my father. He was a mechanic all my life. When I helped him with projects around the house or on cars he would talk like you do. If he forgot something till the end he would go "Now now, why didn't you remind me about that" or"Hey, hold that down for me". Or, "Ha ha, you thought I forgot that part, didn't ya?"
He left me all of his tools and I think I may pick up this passion one day.
Thanks for being you ❤️
After a deck bends it will bend and break on any thing
Jarrod Draper luckily though, there are a lot of 46 inch decks out there for these mowers. They used them on the 200 series as well. I picked one up for my 317 for 70 bucks.

If you're lucky to find one used not trashed!!new one is 750$ish for mine!!!
Great that your using the tools that your dad left you instead of them sitting and rusting in a shed!
I am aretired industrial mechanic 74.I just a had to say first of your work I have seen. I watched every one of your videos on this tractor. I thought that the electrical trouble shooting was excellent. That's what got me to wanting to see how you turned out.
Man what a show!
he last few of my thirty-years trouble shooting in the plant was what I done. Arthritis was hitting me hard even though I was in my early 50's .
They were rotating three or four young mechanics every three months to work with me on the jobs in the mill that was causing repeated equipment downtime that the mechanics and engineers in those (9) areas were having trouble with before I could stay no longer. I did not want to go but could no longer stand the hours.
That was a great systematic display of your very good trouble solving mechanical skills. I thoroughly enjoyed and envied your opportunity to be able to work on that piece of equipment. Thanks for sharing your in trade experience and teaching skills with others . r
Glad you finally took the dent out of the tailpipe. It was driving me crazy. 😉
Matthew Bergin. haha me too,he got us with that one for sure
Yeah, that one triggered my OCD for sure.
Dent? What dent? Lol Didnt bother me.
Was hoping he'd put a chrome tip on it, just for amusement
Your inner monk had already banged against the walls for all episodes I guess ... :-)
You need to make a brush on the plough, sweep the workshop in no time!Matthew
Plus rotating brushes work great on the remaining bit of snow that a plow or blower leaves behind
A simple brush would miss too much, and a rotating sweep makes too much dust. I reckon a vacuum would work a treat, though.
and he'll have to apply a new coat of wax on that garage floor now as well , lol
@@aussiebloke609 Vacuums gets dusty as well, especially when attached to a vehicle. Filtering and airflow rarely go together without creating dust. It's possible, but probably not practical. I wasn't thinking about sweeping inside anyway. While the shop may seem large, it's nowhere near large enough (now there's stuff in it) to use any form of motorized sweeping. Just too many obstacles to get around. Using a wide broom/mop would be just as fast, maybe even faster, since you dont need to maneuver as much.
A bumper on the blade to push nonoperating projects around the shop or up on the lifts, also a bar magnet behind the plow to pickup metal bits from the shop floor and driveway. You maybe surprised at just what you will pickup. The snowblower just could be needed after a Nor'easter gets over dumping on you.
What a wonderful series you made with this dandy John Deere, sir! You leave no stone unturned and I always have a great time watching your videos and seeing your detailing explanations and learning great new tips and tricks. Not to mention, your skills are next to none. You could be teaching classes with your skills and craftsmanship. Thank you for all your great videos and easy going attitude. It sure is a joy to watch you and you had me cracking up with you riding by the camera on that green machine! Respect from Kansas!
Cool video Mustie! loved the ending as well. Plus always great quiet time video of the outdoors.
Hi Mustie1. How am I doing?
Well thank you.
Thanks for letting me hang out in your garage. 👍
The end with all the poses gave me a huge laugh, love it! Great job, it turned out great!
Started watching your channel for a couple days now, and it totally saved our push mower today! It wouldn't stay running and sure enough watching your content gave me enough insight to fix it quickly. Thank you for sharing part of your life/hobby and keep at it friend!
Great job Mustie - thank you Dan for providing your equipment for us to watch and learn on - loved the smiles at the end while riding the new tractor :)
Did anyone else hear it, or was it just me @ 54:40? I could swear I heard ...
"It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've gotta full tank 'o gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark & we're wearing sunglasses. HIT IT!" But it might've just been me?
Great job Mustie1. You're a credit to tinker'ers everywhere! Love you, love your show, loong time watcher. Shame you couldn't have taken Lilly for the test drive too. Woulda added a lil "extra flair." LOL! (Like it needed some to begin with.) God bless you & your family. I bid you peace.
Love the Blues Brothers reference "This is glue, strong stuff"! Really enjoy the channel Mustie, keep up the good work.
It is generally accepted that the Blues Brothers is the finest movie ever made.
Thoroughly enjoyed this little series Mustie, thank you. She looks (and works!) a real treat now.
Thanks for bringing us along on the journey.
Does anyone else look forward to coffee and a mustie1 video on Sunday mornings while they're going through the rest of the week?

Great project , before and after speaks volumes ! i love the complete fix of all, today not many go for small items and your always do ! Thanks Mustie
"Tadaa" :-) I loved every video in this series - it was fantastic to see that you can bring a 1987 John Deere back into life. Kudos to you, Mustie!
I got your Blues Brothers reference. Just don't glue the gas pedal down!
dang you, i was gonna say that lol. LOVE that movie!! :)
There's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it!
So, is this the new Blues Mobile or what?
@@odahithedubious2017 It's a model made before catalytic converters, so it'll run good on regular gas. But Mustie has to fix the cigarette lighter.
Somebody like his new tractor! Ha ha, and abt 28 min, confirmed! Musty does bleed 30 wt.
Knew it but that was proof!
Vietnam
agree 30 wt all day.
ya beat me to it.
So glad you got the John Deere tractor fully functional really glad you showed us the full process. Totally enjoyed it. Going to start doing some finds of my own. You have taught us alot. Keep up the great videos. Faithful subscriber from Southeast Missouri.
Awesome ending. I was waiting for it to drive through without you on it and then to see you chasing after it but I guess you wouldn't want to dent that awesome machine. Excellent ressurrection/rustoration as always.
you have to much fun. cracked me up. thanks for the vid.
I laughed in this part of the video also,, :-)
love the rebuild , but your stunts where brilliant never laughed so much thank you needed that ....
all the best mate jj uk
@50:42 mustie knows us all too well.
But he didn't replace the missing bolt on the bottom of the blade...
This is some classic Mustie1, right here. Thanks for taking the time. Loved the tractor posing passes at the end.
Instablaster.
You did such an incredible restoration job that everybody is going to want a 318. Maybe for another project, you can make it operate by remote control so you can sit inside and plow snow.
I'm picking a 318 up today. I already built an RC walk behind mower. I think I'll try to Radio Control this 318.
Had a BALL with you on this. Great Job!
The beat part of waking up, Mustie in the morning.
That sounds like a radio station promo for a morning show.
Matthew Sharp “Mustie in the morning” sounds like a bizarre weather forecast. 😎
Hey from down under Australia love your work looking forward for more awesome videos
Thanks Dan for your gift to the channel and thank you Mustie1 for one of the best channels on UA-cam
MFW Mustie videos helped get me through my battle with stage 4 cancer, the therapeutic value of watching this guy wrench on old stuff is way underrated; thanks for taking us along on some memorable restoration projects. You are a uniquely gifted man Darrin, God Bless You!
Thanks for the smiles at the end. I love your videos. Awesome as always
Great stuff as usual. The PTO explanation was very good. I always learn something from each of your videos. Much appreciated!
OK, I have been watching you for about 4 years now and the show at the end may have made this my most favorite video yet. Sorry to keep commenting, but this had me rolling. HAHA
Looks really god all put back together. Well done, Mustie
Hey, grandma! Take the plastic off the couch, for Pete's sake! LOL! Nice work!
Another job well done. Thanks for the "before" and "after " at the end and thanks for posting.
greetings from Ontario Canada congratulations on a nice tractor, it will be a fine work horse for you. thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
Looks great! I find myself looking on line for the same tractor. Not that I need one. Ohh and I started cleaning my shop, Just in case you stop by. I have cherry and grape ice pops. Lol. Thanks for taking us on this great build.
But Mustie likes the Smurf ones... 😁
I'm enjoying this project. so many things covered on this machine that'll com in useful. Thank you for going through it from stem to stern.
This was a great series on a American Classic lawn tractor, thank you Mustie1
This was really a great series. I learned a lot during it. Definitely include us on first use and especially if you put the snow blower on.
Thank you for your videos.
my youtube hero love it, a nice Sunday with a Mustie1 video The beat part of waking up, Mustie in the morning. This was really a great series. I appreciate the effort that goes in to making these videos and time, sweat or even blood. Once again, loved your video. Always looking forward to the next...😁 Excellent job Mustie, I knew you would knock it out of the park. Glad you did the before and after too, it's barely recognizable as the same machine. Sweet project, well done and thanks for taking us along with you. 😃😃😃 from Seattle
yup, loved the Blues Brothers reference..made me chuckle
Too funny. Dan Akroyd and Musti 1. Good to keep life in check.
As good as new, looking amazing. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey. God bless you and your family
Hey Mustie, I am based in the UK and I love watching your videos usually for the technical content and not for the comedy, but you made tea come out of my nose when you were doing the drive by section...…!! Keep up the great work mate.
wow if I didn't see it from start to finish I wouldn't beleave its the same one man you really know what your doing great video loved it
I think you do a fantastic job, no matter what you work on.... Nice job!
The various poses on the finished tractor were EPIC! I was laughing so hard I spit out my coffee! LOL
Great job Mustie1. Those are nice machines.
Riiiing.
"Hello, Mustie?"
"Yeah."
"Um. I'd like the John Deere back."
was thinking the same lol
Fine, that will be $1,000 for the restoration.
lol ya. I would however just keep the guys new tractor! Now that is a nice one in the video.
That would be a bargain!
yeah I wondered about this too when a guys old car or equipment shows up on YT and they wonder why they could'nt do that??????
Nice Vid series Darren. I enjoyed it nearly as much as old Crusty. Keep up the good work.
Mustie - You ARE All American ! So darn impressive.
That was made when john deer made great tractors still.Good job restoring it.
Great video series - thank you! The seat reminds me of my grandmother who had plastic covering for her couch.
God bless
Paul
Fantastic!!
Like watching your vlogs have learn alot of stuff about lawnmowers thanks
So now we all know why the factory installs a seat safety switch! That was a really great job on the tractor. Enjoyed the series very much. Thank you.

Great series Mustie, can tell you love those old John Deere tractors, some difference from start to finish !
Excellent series...I watched all of the videos one after another...thank you!! And thank you for saving that 318 from the scrap heap...that was a close call!! Looking forward to your next offering! Thanks again!
I always feel like I'm standing in the shop with you. Often, just for a split second I have to think, oh yeah he can't hear me. lol
Found myself trying to talk to him as well 😂😅
Eremon1 I find myself Talking at the TV “Darren don’t use that wire brush use the emery paper” OR “ change the gas first will yea”
53:12 running a red light in reverse on a tractor. Going to need to see your license and registration, Sir.
..and have you been drinking?> we have video proof that you were..trying to surf on it??
Great work as always, impressed with the valve tuning, all by hand and eye!
So many tips and tricks , thank you
Your detail knowledge of these machines is truly awesome! You are the Guru of Grasscutters!
What a beautiful tractor, you did a great job, I would not sell it,that's a keeper.
I agree
When the plastic came off the seat... that was the defining moment of the series!
I am glad I ran across this after it was all done. I didn't have to wait for the "To be continued" sequels like Spin and Marty when I was a kid. I really enjoyed this. Great job of filming.
I have to say it’s been a pleasure watching you
It’s been just a week since I see first of your videos and I have seen a lot since then
The tractor videos are great I have one and see a lot of things to help me in future
I have also fixed my toro snowblower and Honda generator this week thanks to you
Keep the videos rolling
Cheers
Nice work Darren really enjoyed this project !!!! The Best channel on youtube Salute ...!!!!!!
Musty, You have a gift from God. Thanks from a grateful fan
I was one of your first 10 sub's back when you first started,I had a 71 el Camino back then and got into automotive channels, sadly I had to sell it and got out of watching automobile channel's, glad you have seen such great success on youtube
It is an absolute pleasure to hang out in the garage with you young man you are a wrath of knowledge and extremely mechanically inclined with an over abundance of patienceYou’re awesome keep up the great work and the great videos.
Once again a masterpiece of technical wizardry. Hail the king the king lives
With those graceful moves you could have wowed them mowing Cyprus Gardens!
Great job on this one.
Just found your channel last week on the 50 year old bus motor. Playing catch-up on you videos. This series was A+++++++++. AWSOME work on bringing the 310 back to life!!!!
Just love to see you repairing stuff. You bring things back to life and make it work again correctly. It is never a full and expensive restoration. But you are great at extending the life of this machine maybe even doubling it. The guy who buys this from you will enjoy using it for many years. And I hope you make a great price for it if you sell it.
Super job , well done . Many moons ago I ran the shop at a Deere dealership , back when that unit was new . I love the 2cyl Onan engines . the 318 , 420 were great units . We sold a lot of them and all kinds of implements with them. Funny too years later after working at Deere , I picked a 318 up for $400 bucks that was dead in a guys yard , same situation pretty much . Maybe why I watched your videos LOL. A new battery , some carb work (as you did) and cleaning , deck work , along with some electrical work and couple new tires and paint and it looked as yours does . Mowed some grass for half a season , and sold it for $2800 . I already had a Cub Cadet I mowed with so really didn't need two units. Kinda wish I never sold it . I picked up a 755 JD about ten years later on a trade and fixed that up and sold it a year later , another stupid mistake , but money talks . So really enjoyed your videos . Thanks for the memories .
You know Mustie, if you put that snowblower on the 318, you're going to have to make a cab for it. I would suggest a modified old truck dog house. Great stuff keep 'em coming.
Dude your awesome...you are one of my favorites. I have learned a great deal from your videos. The 318 John Deere was well done. I have the same tractor with all attachments. But now I have a better knowledge of inner workings of this great tractor. Look forward to more. Peace out
What a beautiful job on the restoration! Looks like it just came off the assembly line! Your awesome at fixing up trash and making them into new again! I enjoyed your video!
Awesome job and thanks for the new video!
Get back to us with a demo (dare I say it) when it snows!
Around here we don't use the S word for at least another month. Yikes I dread it this year!
@@johnpossum556 haha
Watching you roll out the finished product reminded me when I was a kid waiting for the family's new car to roll out of the dealership back lot. Another satisfied customer.
Mustie,,The man, the machines and the GLORIES of his talents.
A man is judged by the quality of his work ,, nice work Mustie ! And never lose your body hammer .L.O.L . Bring on the snow!!
Kinda binge watched the series on this rebirth of the John Deere 318, love how in depth you can go when “fixing” something you set your mind to...amazing looking tractor.
Really enjoyed the test drive at the end, it was the only way to truly show off your craftsmanship on this build, and a little show boating never hurts either.....
Keep up the great videos, we are watching and waiting.... thank you.
And a big thanks to Dan for being so generous and allowing us the hours of enjoyment and education brought to us by you, thank you Dan!
@52:00 When you got the second spring in, I couldn't help but to speak Italian. "Badda Bing, Badda Boom!!"
Don't forget the Hydro Oil. Hey! You said to remind you! :-)
I learn so much from your videos, nice to have a laugh out loud.
Just watched the free John Deere 318 rebuild, enjoyed every video . Have subscribed to your Chanel and going to watch all your listed video's. Thanks dude keep them coming.
Now all you need are some rear wheel weights or a rear hitch weight to go with the tire chains.
Or some bar tread rear tires.
HaHa I like the way you check it out after the fix. Never saw anyone ride a tractor like that.
Awesome job on that tractor Mustie, it's a very nice machine!
My first UA-cam comment:
I was watching this at 15:18 and said out loud "This is glue, strong stuff"..... Always good to hear another Elwood homage come back at me. Thank you. It made my day.
Painting the plow??? Now we’re getting fancy 😆
It seems like we’re missing the after break coffee cup with milky coffee somehow. Great video!
Because of you Sir, I just repaired a generator that had been setting for 8 years. Made me an ultrasonic cleaner for the carb from an old crock pot and back vibrator. Runs like a Mustie1 fix. Thank you .
@@gepettoe runs like a mustie1 fix,now this needs to be a global expression!😄👍
That’s the most amazing transformation I’ve ever seen. You are a genius and a master mechanic, fabricator and your knowledge is incredible!
