  • Dr. Michael L. Schilsky is a highly accomplished expert in the field of Wilson disease (WD) research and treatment. He has made significant contributions to both basic laboratory research and clinical studies, focusing on understanding the natural history of WD and improving disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Dr. Schilsky currently serves as the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee for the Wilson Disease Association and directs the Center of Excellence for Wilson Disease at Yale University.
    Dr. Schilsky's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he also pursued post-doctoral training in cell biology.
    Throughout his career, Dr. Schilsky has held various academic positions at prestigious institutions such as Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Yale University School of Medicine. He is currently a Professor of Medicine and Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine.
    Dr. Schilsky's research and clinical work have been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including a National Research Service Award from the NIH, a Research Fellowship Award from the American Liver Foundation, and the Howard M. Spiro MD Digestive Diseases Fellowship Teaching Award. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
    Dr. Schilsky's contributions to science are vast and encompass multiple areas related to WD. His research has focused on the development and implementation of the Wilson Disease Registry Project, a multinational project aimed at expanding the understanding of the disease's natural history and improving patient care. He has also been involved in the development of diagnostic scoring systems and treatment guidelines for WD, including serving as the Chair of the writing group for the updated AASLD guidance on Wilson Disease. Additionally, Dr. Schilsky has conducted studies on acute liver failure and liver transplantation for WD, as well as treatment trials for novel agents and therapies.
    Currently, Dr. Schilsky is the lead investigator for the gene therapy study for WD and has been involved in various clinical trials exploring new treatment options. He is actively engaged in research and serves as the Principal Investigator for multiple grants and studies, including the Wilson Disease Registry and the Adult Acute Liver Failure study group funded by the NIH.
    Dr. Schilsky's expertise and contributions have significantly advanced the field of WD research and have had a direct impact on improving patient outcomes. His dedication to understanding the disease, improving diagnosis and treatment, and advocating for patients with WD has made him a leading authority in the field.
