Hey, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate everything you tell us. I'm 16 and I want to make art my life once I grow up and sometimes I don't pick up my sketchbook, because I think I'm too bad and that I'm wasting my time. But your words make me think totally different now. A sketchbook is not made to create perfect masterpieces but to just simply create art. Art that makes you happy, or that makes you think and much more. Thank you so much! I wish you the best life ever.
Hey there 16, you just start drawing now and if you can't buy sketchbooks you just find whatever paper you can and you can start making your art now you're grown up enough to be on UA-cam and there are lots of artists start making a living at your age. Or just make a start! Yeah this guy is great I like him too

Hey 16, do it! Don't wait. You will never regret drawing, but you will regret not starting sooner and not drawing more or at all. I turn 50 next week. I wish I hadn't waited.
Hey kim, I just turned 70! I started drawing very young, but stopped because of of this same feeling . . . I am just now learning how to "adjust" old drawings, finish them, use posca pens and gouache to wipe out awkward body parts, etc. It has given me so much freedom and enjoyment, and every line I draw or brush mark I make, I am building muscle memory and gaining understanding of what I draw.

While I may agree with you, the art nerd in me has to add that art is way less commercialised than it has been in the past. Up until Michelangelo’s time and even further, art wasn’t exactly seen as a tool to express oneself but rather a trade that was sold like any other. Only in recent times (the last few hundred years) there has been a big general push to make art more expressive, as art became more accessible to both the consumers and the artists themselves, as well as that realism “wasn’t needed anymore” after the camera was invented.
@@vornamenachname3441 I do agree to you! I think what I meant was that while art will always be a medium of expression, it’s the hustle culture in today’s world that can make us forget to enjoy what we were doing in the first place if you know what I mean, it can be detrimental to the act of creativity itself. It’s like a rat race, but it doesn’t only apply to the arts, it applies to almost everything. +expressionism did come out of the need to do something more however, but even realist painters were expressing themselves through their brushwork, unless they were just making a copy without thinking, I think even realism has expression. Thank you!! :)
I think the best thing about this video is that you aren't really challenging us or telling us what to do or in what way to do something. You're inspiring us and letting us know it's okay if we mess up. It's a concept I'm struggling with, that same voice in the head saying nah not today, what if I don't do well, what if I hate it, I'm not that great at this maybe I should procrastinate and watch more art videos (coincidently) lol... we all have this silly fear that every drawing or painting should be excellent when really just like our days (as you said) not all are great, most are just okay, and some will surprise us! I like that sentiment that drawings and paintings, whatever art you do... is about retelling your life, or your innerself and the things you find beauty or interest in. It doesn't matter how it turns out. Just do art , do it for yourself and no one else. Being a human enables us this gift, why not use it... it is never a waste to create, but it is a waste to sit there thinking you shouldn't or can't create. If you like it. Do it. Thanks for sharing this insight. It's a mantra I'm only just starting to practice and accept in myself.
I am just starting my drawing journey at 50, so I appreciate your positivity and showing your own drawings (which are AMAZING, btw) and generally for the kick in the butt (and inspiration) that I needed to keep going. I appreciate you!
This is the kind of guy who should be in our art education or should be giving talks to art teachers. There are plenty that can teach great technique, but not all of them can really get through and teach the right mentality and that’s crucial especially early in an artist’s development.
I have been drawing most of my adult life. I have done murals--commissions--different media--This very simple process you describe is the very thing that started me on this trip over decades ago. Now I can put in pictures what you eloquent put into words, thank you.
Ah, the ‘why are you wasting time?’ voice. I think that voice and I talk more regularly than I do with any other entity. It’s really hard to justify doing something just because you enjoy it sometimes. I have my sketchbook out now (with the voice’s quiet toleration) because my washing is running and I can’t really ‘use this time to go earn money’. Thanks for the inspiration each time I watch one of your videos.
I love the comparison of drawing to going to the gym/being an olympian. Hit home. I suppose we can be rough on ourselves when we have the book to look back on. Lightbulb over my head. It's OK that it isn't a masterpiece, but the enjoyment is the key! Great reminder!!! Thank you.
That was awesome. As a 52 year old, thinking about just beginning the “visual art” journey, i too have that nagging thought “why waste your time.”. This was so encouraging and meaningful. Thanks so much :-)
This just popped up on my UA-cam as a recommendation. So I took your challenge, sat down at the kitchen table, put my phone down, picked up the nearest pen and tried to draw my phone. It worked! I love it! A simple sketch of a phone! I'm so proud of myself! Let's see where this takes me. I can't tell you how excited I feel right now! Thank you 🇦🇺
Danny, you are a very humble fellow. Just the few glimpses I caught of some of your journal pages amazed me. I absolutely felt intrigued and in awe by the breadth of subject matter, the style and excellence in your drawings...to my way of thinking these journals are filled with artistic treasure. I do not think you should just shelve them away to await your untimely demise...before the public can have the pleasure and privilege of enjoying their brilliance and beauty while learning from all the thought and work that has gone into producing them. I am so glad to have crossed your path and am now trying to follow along... such an adventure.
My goodness those glimpses of his art were astounding. I had to play again at .25 speed to see some of them better. Trying to draw the back of a dollar bill? Are you kidding me? Holy cow... Hopefully that wasn't one of his earlier books
this was so inspirational and touching, i appreciate all you have shared and i felt a great feeling which i can't express well.. this video might be the start point of making my dreams become true, thanks a lot!
"All worth doing" love it. Reminds me of the Flylady cleaning system "bad cleaning still blesses your home" perfection will try to convince not to engage in life and the issues that result are sometimes more than we realize.
This is possably my favourite ‘art’ video. You have such a lovely way about you, a really connecting story and friendly face. I loved looking at your sketchbooks, they are beautiful ! And a lovely representation of your life- you have written the story of your life in pictures. Thankyou for sharing them, I love my sketchbooks also and have learnt from seeing yours , how I could do things better. X
I love the philosophy you’ve laid out in this video. I think I’m in the position you were in back then. Young kid. Wife. Job that takes a lot out of me. I’m trying to make art that I love.
I found your videos just this morning before work… and let me tell you how amazing they are… talking about sketchbooking with such a passion. Brought some real emotions to the surface. And now.. I’m packing a sketch book that’s been collecting dust on my shelf into my lunch bag. Thank you 🙏
Found SBS about 3 years ago, and am on sketchbook #16 and #17 (for some reason I have two on the go 😂) thank you for the inspiration as always, Danny 🙌🏼
There needs to be sketchbook repositories and museums. Cuz what happens when we die? What happens to our sketchbooks? I have no children, no one to inherit my many sketchbooks. What if there were sketchbooks libraries? Sketchbook collectors?
Hello, the repositories accept all documents, books, diaries, art, scrapbooks etc. I'm planning on donating my diaries and art journals to a historical society, genealogy association or a city repository. Hope this helps.
there is a sketchbook library started by the brooklyn art library. you can order a blank sketchbook from them, fill it up and send it back and it is added to the library. www.sketchbookproject.com/
Danny, I bought one of your books about 20 years ago. I now draw every day, 20 years later. Through 5 moves, Marie Kondo, and numerous lendings, I held onto that book. I was fed this video without knowing who was talking and I thought about Bob Ross. Relaxing, encouraging, and inspiring. Thanks 😊
I have been creative all my life. I’ve painted portraits, ceramics and everything else that stood still. I craft a lot doing crochet, making wreaths, painting glass and doing calligraphy. You get the idea. Even though sketching and painting is my first love and the first thing I think about every morning when I wake up, I always managed to lose my way even with every conceivable art supply imaginable in my arsenal. After I read Shut Your Monkey and listening to Danny I discovered a new way of thinking and a better attitude about what I create and I’ve managed to get back to what I love starting with my sketchbooks. I sketch everyday and paint in watercolor too all because of Danny. Now as someone in their mid-seventies, I am finally on my way to becoming the artist I always wanted to be. I can attest to the fact that…its NEVER to late to be what you might have been. Create with no reservations.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Danny! I’ve been an artist my whole life; I can’t escape the gravity of it all. You have inspired me to start my 3 year old twin grandsons on their own sketchbook journey.
I really appreciate the kind attitude you had toward yourself as you began. Thank you for setting a great example for the rest of us that it’s okay to be okay with not being a master, especially in the beginning
Loved this video ❤️ I always forget that a sketchbook isn’t even meant for perfect or even finished pieces. They’re not something that I have to show to anyone. It’s just something to practise with, express myself, or get out ideas for a future project. It’s so easy to think that making a sketch should be perfect - why can’t I just see if something works or not? I can! It’s taken me years to figure out such a simple concept.
Wow! This is amazing. There is hope for me. What you have done is great for your family to look at and could be a teaching tool as I am sure you are sharing with your students. You have a legacy.
I’ve been drawing every day since I was 13 years old. I never really felt like I could improve. I could never come up with anything that was my own, and I was always just drawing what I saw on Pinterest. I never stopped though. I know art won’t be my career because I don’t want to taint something I love so much with work stress, but it really is therapy. I recently went through a breakup and haven’t stopped drawing all week. It’s really hard but art is everything to me and so many others. Thank you for your inspiring words. I know I for one really needed them.
This is so inspiring! Thank you for sharing this with us. I never thought of simply drawing what's around me. I am going to try. And your drawings are amazing, they have a lot of personality. I found very interesting the part you talked about the voice that got in the way of your progress and how you handled it. Drawing is having persistence and practicing constantly. And you are proof of that.
I was watching this while I was doing a little painting in my journal. Tears started streaming down my face, what a wonderful video and message, thank you!
Thank you, Danny, for the inspiration. I’ve always loved drawing but have slowly let it fall away. I’m picking up a pen and notebook after I type this and drawing before I go to sleep.
This video makes me emotional, I also start drawing everyday since the beginning of the pandemic and I think one day I would be so grateful of all my sketchbook filled with memories
this is just so inspiring, i stumble upon this video by accident and having quit art 2 years ago from "perfectionism anxiety" this has made me want to get up and grab my old sketch book right now and try again, xx
thank you so much for sharing..I have used the sketchbook through my cancer recovery and now working on finishing my84th book. YOU are an inspiration. thanks for the channel.
Your journey is so encouraging...I'm just beginning at 60+ years..and no experience...except back in elementary school...you make it all seem possible (line upon line)..thank you so much!
I started a sketchbook because of your video. The goal is to make art and finish 1 page a day with no judgement of what is made which is very hard for me. I am on day three Thank you, for your insights and helping those of us who have high anxiety that every piece we make should be a masterpiece therefore we make nothing . Now after I make something I just close the book. I have learned that once I document some stuff I can let it go and it doesn't add to the clutter in my house because it's too interesting or to sentimental.
oh my god, I just want to see more and more sketchbooks of yours!! Also, such a sincere and authentic video, you kept me focused. Thanks for making it!!!
best seven minutes of my last days. thanks for sharing. it reached me when you said that some are good, some are awkward but just like your days in life, they're all worthy.
I'm about to start my "10 hours a day drawing practice for 3 years" next month after i get done with my university entrance exam, so that i can get better at art. Your video reminded me to not forget to have fun when i do all that, Which is very very important, and i sometimes forget it out of anxiety(fear of not improving and not being good). So thank you very much. I just wanted to let you know how much i appreciate the video you made. I'm going to thank you again 3 years later. Hope you have a great day every day.
Try to schedule in rest days or you risk burnout, even if those rest days are only once every 2 weeks. Goals are great but pacing ourselves is pretty much always wiser. ❤
New viewer- I love the calm in your dialogue. It’s quietly confident and soothing. A great alternative to the over-dramatic gaming styles. Thank you for your vulnerability and openness from one random 50-something in Minnesota.
You have such an amazing mindset when it comes to art. Hearing you speak about your experiences was so interesting and full of wisdom. Thanks for convincing me to pick up a pen!
This video is such a fantastic reminder for everyone that art isn't about perfection. It is meant to be experimental, messy, sometimes awkward, and definitely fun! I relate so much to the stage of life you described at the beginning and feel so inspired to try and find ways to incorporate more time for art in my day. Thank you for this fabulous reminder!
I'm in my early 30's I've started drawing again almost 3 years again, after not doing anything for 15. It took me 11 seconds of your video for me to subscribe. People like you inspire me and make me feel like it's possible to get better even if we're "late"
Just discovered this channel. So encouraging and inspiring. Not so afraid of the blank page now. Also, this gentleman has such a nice speaking voice. Thank you.
Hi. And I was 17 I moved to Pittsburgh to go to art School and I was a fairly talented yet not dedicated enough artist I was really gifted a sculpture of photography but I had drawn since I was a child and everybody said my drawings were good. A lot of things happen when I lived there and my school closed and I didn't go to another and I stopped drawing. Many years later I did several paintings and, I think they are pretty amazing. I still have them but I don't draw. I found you probably 3 days ago here on UA-cam, and I bought a SketchBook at the hobby store and it's 2:00 in the morning and I'm sitting here watching your video and I got it out of the package and I'm going to draw something. I really like what you said about your first drawings weren't very good and then you got better and better and you realize you could draw anything and also about how they can take you to any point in your life at any time you open one and how they really are documenting your life. I like your style Danny Gregory with these videos and I like when you flip through your sketchbooks, I like the kinds of things that you put in them. so I'm here in my living room and I'm going to draw what's right in front of me on the first page of my little new sketchbook. I hope you see this because it's my way of saying thank you. I know my drawings won't be very good at first and I really don't care. I just feel like I should use what you're saying and just draw. 🙂🙏🤍
wow this really changed the way i look at art. i hv been worrying constantly as to when i will be able to display my art in galleries. but it isnt about that is it? art is about how you feel and how you much you enjoy it isnt it. Thank you so much for your video. it has really calmed me down.
This is fantastic. I’ve had painter’s block so-to-speak for the last 3 years. I want to do art. I CRAVE it. But just can’t seem to get past not knowing what to paint. Today I started a faux stained glass painting and it feels amazing! Now I’m gonna keep my drawing journal nearby, and take it with me when I go out. I’m going to start drawing again - Starting today - every day.
Hay Dany...I want to tell u how much u hav boosted me and to continue sketching ...I began keeping one since July this year and u hav helped and encouraged me do much...thanku so much x 🙂
This video is so relatable 🙏 I am 30 and I want to start drawing again after many years without touching a pencil or a brush, but visual art has always brought me so much joy that I need it to reconnect myself to my inner child, to my true self. Thank you so much for this inspirational and uplifting video.
I think a lot of people think, that taking pictures is almost the only method of remembering your life, but I think that is so wrong. I have a bullet journal and, just like a sketchbook, I think it helps me remember the moment, I wrote or drew something in it, so much more than a photo could ever. Also great video, really motivated me to start a sketchbook :)

Your last sentence nailed it……..”a great way to spend the rest of your time on earth,…….making art!”. Well said Sir
Thank you
🇦🇺
This might well be the best sketchbook video I’ve seen. Thank you so much for your gentle, well-illustrated encouragement.
100 sketchbooks????? Even the title is insane haha. Can't wait! Hope I get to say the same some day ❤️
Your videos are so incredibly inspiring! Wow, 100 sketchbooks. You’ve earned a fan…. Probably thousands
This was so inspiring. And your sketchbooks are such a joy to watch. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much!
I love the philosophy you’ve laid out in this video. I think I’m in the position you were in back then. Young kid. Wife. Job that takes a lot out of me.
I’m trying to make art that I love.
Nobody has ever moved me like you do sir! I have filled the first page of my first sketchbook and I really want to share my beginning with you.
That is awesome!
I could listen to Danny Gregory teach, for hours.
I found your videos just this morning before work… and let me tell you how amazing they are… talking about sketchbooking with such a passion. Brought some real emotions to the surface. And now.. I’m packing a sketch book that’s been collecting dust on my shelf into my lunch bag. Thank you 🙏
Sounds like a delicious idea
Found SBS about 3 years ago, and am on sketchbook #16 and #17 (for some reason I have two on the go 😂) thank you for the inspiration as always, Danny 🙌🏼
Way to go! You're three years ahead of me!
@@sylviaclark5376 I hadn’t heard of that! Thanks!
@@sylviaclark5376 omg thats so cool!! i can donate ny weird diaries...y'all will be so confused😂
there is a sketchbook library started by the brooklyn art library. you can order a blank sketchbook from them, fill it up and send it back and it is added to the library. www.sketchbookproject.com/
@@berlinbabylon thats really cool!! too bad i live abroad
Thanks 😊
That's so nice of you Tara,,,,,,, I really appreciate your comment, hello 👋 how are you doing I hope you are having a wonderful day.
So inspiring but what makes it ten times better is his soothing voice and nature😊
Thanks for sharing Mr. Danny! I’ve been an artist my whole life; I can’t escape the gravity of it all. You have inspired me to start my 3 year old twin grandsons on their own sketchbook journey.
That is awesome!
I really appreciate the kind attitude you had toward yourself as you began. Thank you for setting a great example for the rest of us that it’s okay to be okay with not being a master, especially in the beginning
I'm so glad my words are helpful, Sabreenah Rochelle
He started drawing in his 30s. It inspires us that even if you're old, you can do something you love for instance drawing gymnastics etc
Yes! Thanks for watching 💛
@@SketchBookSkool , I'm 54 and am getting back to drawing. Thank you so much for your posts.
Loved this video ❤️
I always forget that a sketchbook isn’t even meant for perfect or even finished pieces. They’re not something that I have to show to anyone. It’s just something to practise with, express myself, or get out ideas for a future project. It’s so easy to think that making a sketch should be perfect - why can’t I just see if something works or not? I can! It’s taken me years to figure out such a simple concept.
Thank you for the reminder. I used to draw a lot growing up up until college.
I can say nothing more profound than a simple thank you.
You gave me back the magic.
Thank you
🧡
Thank you for letting me know.
Wow! This is amazing. There is hope for me. What you have done is great for your family to look at and could be a teaching tool as I am sure you are sharing with your students. You have a legacy.
Words can’t explain how happy I am to have discovered this channel. Thank you for sharing this with us.
That's so nice of you Madeline,,,,,,I really appreciate your comment on this video, hello 👋 how are you doing I hope you are having a wonderful day.
I love that you drew so many different things with different mediums! Your sketchbooks do indeed look very exciting 🌿
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your artistic journey with us!
You remain such a huge inspiration Danny! Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to keep us all drawing in our sketchbooks :D
Hugely inspirational. Thank you! I need to learn to let go, and just roll with it
I was watching this while I was doing a little painting in my journal. Tears started streaming down my face, what a wonderful video and message, thank you!
Thank you, Danny, for the inspiration. I’ve always loved drawing but have slowly let it fall away. I’m picking up a pen and notebook after I type this and drawing before I go to sleep.
Love comments like this. Hope you enjoyed it!
This video makes me emotional, I also start drawing everyday since the beginning of the pandemic and I think one day I would be so grateful of all my sketchbook filled with memories
Enjoying the process is everything. Desire is everything. I love to watch your videos and today I’m finally telling you.
this is just so inspiring, i stumble upon this video by accident and having quit art 2 years ago from "perfectionism anxiety" this has made me want to get up and grab my old sketch book right now and try again, xx
thank you so much for sharing..I have used the sketchbook through my cancer recovery and now working on finishing my84th book. YOU are an inspiration. thanks for the channel.
I’m in my early 50s and want to draw more. Thanks for the video. You’re an inspiration.
How can you not love this man? Just can’t !!Thank you so much
Your journey is so encouraging...I'm just beginning at 60+ years..and no experience...except back in elementary school...you make it all seem possible (line upon line)..thank you so much!
Wow, I'm so glad!
Your art is amazing 💐 can you do sketchbooks tours more often?
oh my god, I just want to see more and more sketchbooks of yours!! Also, such a sincere and authentic video, you kept me focused. Thanks for making it!!!
This inspires me too much that I am going to fill 100 sketchbooks no matter how many years I need.
Thank you so much 💓
Yes! Go for it!
Sir, your wisdom about art makes me feel at ease. Thank you so much sharing your experiences with us!
best seven minutes of my last days. thanks for sharing. it reached me when you said that some are good, some are awkward but just like your days in life, they're all worthy.
10 hours ... i hope you're in art school. and don't burn out. otherwise that's gonna be hard. good luck
Try to schedule in rest days or you risk burnout, even if those rest days are only once every 2 weeks. Goals are great but pacing ourselves is pretty much always wiser. ❤
@@AmbiCahira thank you. I will do that.
New viewer- I love the calm in your dialogue. It’s quietly confident and soothing. A great alternative to the over-dramatic gaming styles. Thank you for your vulnerability and openness from one random 50-something in Minnesota.
Awesome, thank you!
You have such an amazing mindset when it comes to art. Hearing you speak about your experiences was so interesting and full of wisdom. Thanks for convincing me to pick up a pen!
You are so welcome!
Thank you Lizzy!
Absolutely loved your process - natural, as it should be! Definitely taking some tips :)
I love listening to you. It’s so calming and at the same time inspiring.
this is SO INSPIRING! I'm 36 and I've recently taken up drawing. I hope one day I'll be able to inspire other people like you inspire me right now.
Wow, thanks for the kind words!
Its not just art, he gave valuable information about life too.
Just discovered this channel. So encouraging and inspiring. Not so afraid of the blank page now. Also, this gentleman has such a nice speaking voice. Thank you.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
You are always an inspirational source Danny! Thanks for sharing that much.
Interesting, inspiring and amazing. This is one of the best UA-cam videos out there. Thank you for sharing your experience!
such a wonderful perspective and reminder of what is it all about! thank you for creating this nice video and sharing your experience💓
Thank you for this video!!
This is so inspiring. Life is indeed learning and growing every single day. 💓
What a wonderful story! I’m inspired. Thanks for sharing.
🙂🙏🤍
how did your first drawing go?
wow this really changed the way i look at art. i hv been worrying constantly as to when i will be able to display my art in galleries. but it isnt about that is it? art is about how you feel and how you much you enjoy it isnt it. Thank you so much for your video. it has really calmed me down.
';m so glad I could help you, Shruti.
Heart of Kentucky. SKETCHBOOK SKOOL. Love your Sketch Books. So inspiring. I'm amazed at all you do. Katie.
I love Danny Gregory…art everyday.
Sketching your everyday.
That is a GREAT way to cope with the inner voice. I will definitely be utilizing that in my own life. Thank you!
Wonderful. Thanks for watching, Paula!
This video is so relatable 🙏 I am 30 and I want to start drawing again after many years without touching a pencil or a brush, but visual art has always brought me so much joy that I need it to reconnect myself to my inner child, to my true self. Thank you so much for this inspirational and uplifting video.
Your sketchbooks have so much personality; I just love it. Thank you for your inspirational posts.
Love how you kept it real, down to earth. Thank you for sharing it 😊
I think a lot of people think, that taking pictures is almost the only method of remembering your life, but I think that is so wrong.
I have a bullet journal and, just like a sketchbook, I think it helps me remember the moment, I wrote or drew something in it, so much more than a photo could ever.
Also great video, really motivated me to start a sketchbook :)
So glad you liked it!
