To be honest, the movie recording of Crowe doesn't do his [Crowe's] voice justice; this isn't meant to be a criticism of him or the movie but to me it was clear that Crowe could sing but something (production, direction?) wasn't letting him sound the best.

He really gets into all the hoops the performers had to jump through to meet the directors expectations and behind the scenes info that explains why a lot of the performances in the movie weren't that great even though the people singing were actually quite good.
If memory serves correct crowe was not originally trained as an operatic singer. So his portrayal was amazing for lacking the standard training most singers have for that role.
People complain that Russel Crowe doesn't have a good vocal range, but i disagree. His range is fine, it's just in a lower register than most of the singers who have portrayed Javert on stage. Listen to how low he goes on the word "chain" and how long he sustains it for, which is not easy to do. Personally i think it works really well for this role because it adds contrast between the voices of Javert and Valjean and makes it easier to distinguish what each character is saying. P.S. I thought he was great in the movie as well. It's true that some of the parts he sings weren't quite as good as the live version ("One Day More" comes to mind), but the songs that do work (such as "Confrontation" and "Stars") work *really* well. His acting also brings out a more subtle and empathetic side of the character that, for me at least, makes his version the definitive one.

I can't believe you're the guy who absolutely knocks you back in your seat with his voice in the 17 Valjeans despite probably the least words. Quality over quantity, as they say. And Russell Crowe from the movie, whose more sympathetic, softer take on Javert reminds me of Charles Laughton's great performance in the 1935 film. What a crossover! It's refreshing to hear a different take on this song pulled off so well.

There are different kinds of singing and everyone has different kinds of doing singing. That is different shapes of art. Russell does very well despite he is not a musical actor.

I don't understand who criticizes Russell Crowe as Javert. He's a great actor and has an excellent voice. The character's rigidity fits perfectly with Russell Crowe's acting and singing. As much as he didn't make a Javert like the unsurpassed Philip Quast, Crowe also deserves his credit. What's more, his interaction with Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) did the job justice. I am always touched by this song in Russell's voice. He always manages to bring a depth and raw gravity consistent with the plot of the story.
I completely agree, his voice fits the character. It has a completely different tone then the rest. I think it’s because he doesn’t really have vibrato but it works for his character, a much more rigid character as you said. Not your typical musical/Broadway voice but it works. As far as Leyton, no comment. His rendition of Bring Him Home gives me chills every time. I see why he is renowned as one of the best Jean Valjeans in the world haha

People criticise Russell Crowe's performance in the movie and I used to think that way too, but after watching a video of him singing The Confrontation in a bar and now listening to him in this video makes me think whether they could have chosen a better take for the movie version - he's absolutely great here!
Blame the director of the movie. He did that movie in an awful way for actors, live sound , long takes, padded settings, barely moving to not make noise, complete silence... each and every one of the actors involved would've make way better performances if it was shot in a normal way.
Videos like this show time and time again that Crowe is not a bad singer at all, but the movie was so poorly directed (musically), that him and Hugh weren't able to shine as they should've.
