CIRKUS
including Entry of the Chameleons
(Fripp / Sinfield)
Night: her sable dome scattered with diamonds,
Fused my dust from a light year,
Squeezed me to her breast, sowed me with carbon,
Strung my warp across time.
Gave me each a horse, sunrise and graveyard,
Told me only I was her;
Bid me face the east closed me in questions
Built the sky for my dawn...
Cleaned my feet of mud, followed the empty
Zebra ride to the Cirkus,
Past a painted cage, spoke to the paybox
Glove which wrote on my tongue-
Pushed me down a slide to the arena,
Megaphonium fanfare.
In his cloak of words strode the ringmaster
Bid me join the parade...
“Worship!” cried the clown, “I am a TV.
Making bandsmen go clockwork,
See the slinky seal Cirkus policeman;
Bareback ladies have fish.”
Strongmen by his feet, plate-spinning statesman,
Acrobatically juggling-
Bids his tamers go quiet the tumblers
Lest the mirror stop turning...
Elephants forgot, force-fed on stale chalk,
Ate the floors of their cages.
Strongmen lost their hair, paybox collapsed and
Lions sharpened their teeth.
Gloves raced round the ring, stallions stampeded
Pandemonium seesaw...
I ran for the door, ringmasters shouted,
“All the fun of the Cirkus!”

Didn't Robert Fripp once say something like "There are some who like Lizard. I don't know why, they must be very strange people"... I love it :)
I think he has changed his mind since then
if that's true... then I must be a very strange person!
Well It defenitely feels like special album
strange people????...really???...comin' from a man who danced like a swan durin' the lockdown.....he ain't strange....love king crimson, love Lizards and respect Fripp, but....he ain't weird but sick....
He has lost his mind in old age unfortunate
This is actually insane. Full King Crimson discography is finally gonna make it! Also Lizard album is super underrated, who's with me?
side 1 is brilliant.
@@dougmphilly Just as side 2
Cirkus is wonderful. I received some days ago a vinyl player, and I choose Lizard to inaugurate it.
@@massimonafissi7798 agreed Cirkus has to be like top 10 King Crimson songs for me
I listen to this album more than any others by KC-followed by Court of The Crimson King :-)
LIZARD GANG ASSEMBLE
Lizard Gang rise up
Hi there
Yeahhh Boisss. Even tho we have larks' as our PFP.
Here
Me and my microdot blotter are ready to represent!
When this album came out, I told my teen self that I would still enjoy this music when I was in my 60's. I was right.
Very true. Listened plus 2k times, never gets dull
That is amazing. I’m in my 30s and been in love with this song since I was 16. Hope I still am when I’m in my 60s too!
Im doing this right now
i think he's playin coy about it
Yes, same here. I first listened to this when I was 21, now I am going to be 62 soon. This stuff is timeless.
This isn't jazz, it's King Crimson... :-0 A genre unto itself...
"This isn't Rock 'N Roll, this is genocide"!
This album is King Crimson literally saying "ya like jazz?"
Mighty Boosh?
@@terminalbungus9566 I think it's from the Simpsons, when Lisa gets locked in a locker she tries to befriend the bully. Having said that, I can totally imagine Fripp just casually having a lunch with The Spirit of Jazz, would fit his weirdness just right.
@@nickzardiashvili624 It's actually from Bee Movie
@@victorluiz6766 Oh yeah...
Yes
YES! The most underrated King Crimson album!
never thought much of islands but this album is so unusual and i rate it higher than in the wake of poseidon.
Amen to that
@@dougmphilly I think Islands is FORGETTABLE, just like Wake and many other KC records...but LIZARD IS TOTALLY UNFORGETTABLE...every moment!
TOTALLY UNIQUE too!
Don't know what people mean by "Islands isn't that good" that album is amazing in it's own way, I mean the song islands is probably the most peacefully beautiful song I've ever heard
Crimson KIng, Poseidon and Lizard could have easily been a triple album; I just have to listen to them back to back to get the full blast. It works every time, sheer magic.
I RAAAAAAAAAAAN FOR THE DOOR RINGMASTER SHOUTED *ALL THE FUN OF THE CIRKUS* (Lizard Gang our time has come)
ONE HAND CLAP!
i read this comment literally as he says this
Robert's underappreciated acoustic guitar skills are highlighted here.
My thoughts exactly... A good amount of weird acoustic work on the first album too if you listen for it.
Acoustic guitar juxtaposed with mellotron/sax/frenetic drumming. Only KC.
@@victorwong9622 i absolutely love it
Lizard is a strange album that I heard the first time, when it was all new, through two100w Marshall amps on full volume. Something happens on that volume; the horns shakes the floor. Fripp’s guitar is very complex, Andy McCulloughs drums are great, Tippets piano is almost free jazz, and Marc Charig’s cornet brilliant. Haskell’s and Jon Anderson’s voices have a nice fit to the project. An under-appreciated record, IMHO of course.
The level of complexity in this masterpiece of an album is mindblowing. At times it sounds completely chaotic and the vast array of instruments seem to be flying at the listener from all directions. Hearing the Steven Wilson remaster really helped to open up the listening experience to the depth of instrumentals being performed, like the crazy Tippet piano that you refer to in addition to all of the wonderful brass, mellotron, and of course Fripp's playing. Andy's minimalistic almost tribal drumming holds it all together. There is simply nothing like it. I wish I could experience it for the first time like many here are likely to on UA-cam.
What is strange ??? For me is Lizard just straight from the heart
The drums are really poor in my opinion, no flow. Compare the drumming here with Giles or Bruford, it's a huge difference imo

@@Syfoll What the hell? No..
Does this mean they're finally uploading the band's entire discography? *YESS*
Ueesss cant wait for discipline
It's not Yes, it's King Crimson
THRAK will take a while to be uploaded, thank god I have it on Spotify.
Now, I wait for Red
@@cakebear9534 red was uploaded on another channel full.
I downloaded it immediately.
Now the video got deleted
After more than a decade following the remix of the album by the remarkable Steve Wilson, finally Robert made peace with Lizard. I think that this incredible avant-garde album, blend of free jazz and progressive rock, in his mind, the mind of the creator, required a top notch remix. The more I listen certain pieces of KC the more this music gets under my skin. Their music is art not entertainment.
Wow, this video actually allows comments...
I'm surprised Fripp allowed that to happen...
NO, WAI-
"See the slinky seal Cirkus policeman."
I love that line.
Yes, but "Bareback ladies have fissh."
"Strongmen by his feet, plate-spinning statesmen... Acrobatically juggling".
This and "Happy Family" are two of my favs, lyrically and musically.. they are so bizarrely beautiful. Like an elaborate, demonic carnival where the tickets have LSD on them.. 😂
Those lyrics!!!
Basically, we all agree that Peter Sinfield will be remembered as one of the greatest poets of late '900
@@stevenj2717 I ran for the door, ringmaster shouted: "All the fun of the Cirkus!" Madness!
I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO UPLOAD THE ALBUNS IN A MONTHLY SCHEDULE! I guess someone at DGM got really impatient. Already looking forward to Islands and Larks.
I only recently learned that there are people who don't love this album, including Fripp. What is wrong with these people? This is my favorite King Crimson album.
@@chavo7775 happy family is my favorite track
Me too . This is my favorite King Crimson album . There is Rock , there is Jazz , there is Classical and one of the best composition by KING CRIMSON . Love this album .
Strange indeed. I have listened to less brilliant things composed by K. C.
He has an improved opinion of it now (as do I) because of the Steven Wilson re-mix ;) .
😂😂😂
I put off listening to this album for so long, only to find out it was incredible. How can a band make so many good albums with so many different line ups? A fantastic album.
La primera vez que oí este álbum fue en 1970. Y me impactó, hoy?., lo diferiría al máximo debe decir disfruto jijijijiii
Robert Fripp's direction, as well as his ability to pick good musicians, has a lot to do with it.
Semplicemente perché a capo di tutto c'è un genio musicale del calibro di ROBERT FRIPP!!!!!! Gli altri sono stati e sono grandi musicisti e ottimi comprimari!!!!!!!! Prog Rock WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!!
Why have i never listened to this album? wtf this is heat.
In the immortal words of Arnold Boykin HCTHS, Homeroom class, 1965, Buffalo, NY "Chu Ain't the Mo Real"... lol
This is probably the only KC album i can listen in repeat without skipping any song, i simply love it from start to finish, it brings me an unusual melancholy feeling that i haven’t particularly experienced in any other album
Hello from the u.k.
Just read your comment, I just thought it was me!
There seems to be a thread running through these early crim albums,
That transports you to a different place, even when lyricist sinfield left
For me carried on until RED,then when Wetton left so did I
If you haven’t heard it listen to McDonald and Giles self titled album
recorded when they split from crimson has that same feel to it.
Going back to your comment, possibly one of the best I’ve read
to describe an album, because it gets me the same it’s an autumn album!
Take care in these stupid times.
Can't wait for the CIRKUS to begin !
Fripp once said that the album Lizard is "unlistenable"... As a hardcore Crimson fan since a teen (I'm now 50) this was my favorite album of all time. Maybe it had to do with the mass quantities of LSD we used to ingest, but this album always took me the furthest. If I trip again anytime soon, this will definitely be on the playlist.
"mass quantities of LSD" lol I wish that was me
Yeah, this one takes a bit of effort to appreciate... or even to listen to once. But some eccentric dark genius in parts...
It will soon be Shroom season again before you know it...😁🤪🤯🙃😆Just saying ;-)
Actually this isn't his very last opinion on this record. AFAIK Lizard was borne in an horrendously conflictual period for the band, which possibly accounts for the poignant, ripping, almost desperate contributions of each artist to the whole.
The guitar passages are so amazing in this song.
Maybe this album is the one showing the full breadth of Peter Sinfield's genius as a poet/lyricist with his work as an essential founding member of King Crimson and Premiata Forneria Marconi.
Canción epica, álbum elegante. Lizard, uno de los mejores álbumes de esta grandiosa banda!!!!
I remember reading a science fiction horror storie listening to this album and almost having a heart attack 😅 good times
I read the last psr of 1984 while listening to larks tongues and their 80s' albums
What storie you were reading?
@@dwightcronenweth7901woah I read basically all of 1984 listening to Thrak and occasionally Three of a Perfect Pair. Thrak especially fit so well that the two are entangled in my brain forever
Song is great but Fripp's acoustic parts are out of this world. Insanely good.
Happy family gang
To me, Lizard always felt like a - very sophisticated - horror film. You are persistently aware that something completely weird might happen - and sometimes it does. Like it.
"lizard" maybe king crimson's robert fripp's least favorite album, he has called
it unlistenable, i totally disagree. there is nothing in the crimson
catalogue that sounds like this. its demented and twisted. its not the
neo classical from the debut of the proto metal that was to follow,
lizard is the one that is on an island.
Along with Islands. and maybe THRAK
I love Thrak.. I know it's very different from earlier offerings but isn't that what a true progressive band does? Progress? Heck, I love all their albums, although Heartbeat was one of my lesser favs.
I think it is the best song of the album.
5:17 - Mel's supreme jazzy sax seems to climax the crazy sarabande; there's no mean to conceive anything louder, stronger, crazier than this... and yet at 5:42 Mark Charig's trumpet enters: dissonant, scary, simple, almost childish, and you realize that there's no way back, that you've got to drown in this insane vortex and get lost inside it.....
I think Marc Charig might be playing a cornet.
@@ericarmstrong6540 You are absolutely right. However, the essence of the progression into madness I want to emphasize lies in the passage from the relatively smooth sound of a woodwind to the screechy tone of a brass. So, I say that "trumpet" is the best known term to illustrate the concept to the widest possibile audience.
Its amazing. Especially that last part with the trumpet(cornet whatever) just beautiful
Cannot agree more
babe wake up king crimson dropped a new track
IF in the wake was alot like In the court, Lizard was as far away from it as possible and Robert Hated it
Best of King Crimson in best Quality
Finally
This and the entire album in general will always be one of the most unique music experiences I've experienced, I remember last year during quarantine listening to this, In The Court of The Crimson King, and In The Wake Posideon, almost daily, and even in during the long nearly sleepless nights to day break, being amazed, and shook listening to utter whimsical and jazzy tunes of Lizard, even if this lp is pretty divisive among crimson fans, I think this is one of their best works.
My introduction to KC. Listening to music was never the same again afterwards. Mind blowing in every sense.
This is my favorite album by them and nothing can change my mind.
Happy family one-hand clap
Four went down
But none came back... EPIC!!! ❤ 😎👍
But are we clowns?
Yes.
Deep
We are the entire cirkus
Lizard has always been my favorite King Crimson album. Played many times over the past 50+ years. I love the other Crimson albums over the years, but nothing struck, or continues to stick, a chord with me as this album.
I know people get excited by a Crim upload, but seriously, you guys should own all these albums already. It’s nice to see it on UA-cam but Crimson is one of those bands that the entire discography is a must own.
i appreciate your sentiment and i agree. but also keep in mind not everyone has the money to buy full physical discogs lol
I have about 45 cd’s from king crimson 6 lp’s. But i like listening to it on youtube. It kind of makes me feel like i am listening to it with someone else. You know how we are damned, nobody that i know personally would even listen to this for a second with me.
I have them all but I can't carry a record player around with me 🤣
not everyone who listens to king crimson is old though, its just easier to listen through youtube
except for beat
This is the most oppressive drumming of all time. One of my all time favorites.
They finally did it boys, lizard is getting the same treatment
Rip gordon Haskell
Their creeping claws, so slow of pace,
Their roving eyes and stoic face
Distinguish the chameleon.
Enter the chameleon.
A viper's fang atop their spears,
An armored suit that disappears,
An army of chameleon.
Enter the chameleon.
The hypnotizing, rhythmic clink
Of every soldier's scale in sync.
Entrancing the chameleon,
The entering chameleon.
Lizards, leave your hidden homes
And paint yourselves. The sea, it foams;
An ocean of vermilion
Beckons the chameleon.
I listened to Court a few years back (I used whatever methods possible), and just now these past few weeks realized there's the entire discography on here. When 2:24 hit I was hit with such a wave of nostalgic goosebumps.
One of my favourites KC track and LP! Thank you Mr Fripp for sharing your work of genius with us on YT.
One of my favorite King Crimson songs
It’s great reading comments from other people that also LOVE this song!!!
Diary of Dr. Weak Licks (translation): "2021.01.18, 06:30: Started my n-th homeworking day, this morning my pearls of wisdom are supported by King Crimson's album LIZARD. Happy to have it on UA-cam, I do not need to stand up, take the CD and put it into the CD player. Wow!"
I just love the mellotron part!
I read an article somewhere that described the Mellotron solo in Cirkus as something like “an escalator descent into hell” which I think couldn’t be more apt. My dad always taught me to appreciate the brilliance of Lizard.
Believe it or not.. my favorite lp!!!
I listen for the thousandth time to this marvel and yet I wonder: how was all this actually conceiveable FIFTY-TWO years ago??? I cannot believe my luck, having spent my whole life finding stimulus, solace, opportunity for reflection and ...CHALLENGE in such superb music and texts.
Same for me, I need to hear this frequently and also calculatod I surpassed this 1000 times already years ago. What makes this album so extraordinately? I wonder...
1:39 onwards beautiful guitar work

Dopo circa 50 anni rimane uno dei migliori album della storia del rock mondiale. ..un grazie a Robert Fripp gran Capitano di questa magica band
Sono d'accordo
Si è vero
Listening on the headphones allows one to hear all the crazy and chaotic overdubs, and it kind of reminds one of Mahler.
But in Mahler's case the madness is quite controlled and structured, whereas with KG it's improvised. But it's the same musical and artistic temperament and mentality.

The Fripp/Boz/Mel/Ian version of KC actually played this live and did a good job.
Fripp delivers.

Cirkus is one of the greatest King Crimson songs ever made. So strange and unusual. What must people have thought back in 1970 when they first heard this?
Hello Eric from north wales!
I’m 66 now, and liked crim since I was 14 yrs old islands was my first
listening.
Then just acquired the rest, I hope you have heard STILL or STILLUSION

It’s Pete sinfields only solo album from 1973, a masterpiece in lyrics.
it is still available, I thought the wetton era was fantastic, but after
RED I couldn’t get into them, I read somewhere that fripp was.
Going to change the name of the band after RED, he should have
done.
