Thanks for a wonderful in depth review. It’s so hard to find both a tester that knows what they’re talking about and is also impartial when it comes to Teslas as most reviewers in the US are owners of the vehicle themselves, and so have a unrealized bias towards confirming their purchasing decision.
Still the best reviewer on the internet. Always appreciate your honesty. I do love the Model Y but been waiting to see how they improve the suspension until buying one for the family. We rented one in Queensland for a week last year. Yes, the app is utterly brilliant. The overall vehicle technology and infrastructure felt 5 years ahead of most cars on the road.
Hey Paul, my model 3 auto hi-beam used to be rubbish, but since the last couple of software up dates has improved massively to the point of being almost perfect. If you haven't used it for sometime, it might be worth trying it again. Also agree the LR is a great bang for buck, especially if you opt for the acceleration boost option.
I have a Model Y RWD and I can confirm the Auto Highbeam does dip when it detects any cars around 100-200m ahead and this has worked reasonably well since Oct 2022. It can get confused with some reflective signage so it dips a tad with some false-positives, but otherwise is pretty good. Hoping they introduce matrix highbeam update in the future since they have the matrix headlight hardware.
So glad to see the blue.. All I have seen so far are white Teslas in Vic... This is my colour of choice and I think the Model Y is the car I'll get in a couple years when hopefully I am comfy with the charging infrastructure for country wide travel. I think the Model X just isn't worth the massive cost over this, and the only thing I would change is to add one of the MANY available HUD options that slit and go up and down with the wheel. I know I'll get used to the middle screen but I don't WANT to, and the HUDS look fantastic and are cheap (relatively speaking). Blue with the light interior. Sold! I hope by then though that Tesla considers adding adaptive dampers, and also I wonder if the Aussie cars will lose Ultrasonic sensors.. I need to see Tesla's camera updates in action before I am convinced.

Great review, Paul. I love my Model 3 Performance but the space of the Y does seem pretty practical. We had a look at a Model 3 & a standard Model Y yesterday. Initially, I thought the 3 would have been my choice, but because the seats in the Y sit up on a raised platform, getting in and out of the seat is so much easier, for an old guy. It was absolutely amazing! The 3 was hard to get in and out of. The biggest dissapointment however, was no spare tyre. The salesman said there was 4 years of road service, but frankly, if you have a flat, that can't be repaired with a tube of goo, you could be stranded for a long time! He countered with "For $300 you can buy a spare wheel". Yeah, but where do you store it! Hi Paul, I turn the auto high beam off every time after engaging autopilot by pushing the indicator stalk away from the driver. The auto high beam is simply useless in its current form. 2:48.
I've been waiting on this vehicle for some time, and thought that once the lease on our current vehicle expired it would be at the top of our list of replacements. Now I'm not so sure given you highlighted some quite significant flaws, not the least of which is the (poor) suspension. The good news is that Tesla has a policy of improving its cars over time, so 2 years from now, the issue might well be gone. Incidentally, the days of Telsa's poor quality are *not* over: my daughter received her M3 earlier this year with stone chips in the bonnet and it took 2 weeks for Tesla to fix it. They gave her a loan-car, but the issue shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Mate I have this car and to say it has poor suspension is probably not a fair comment. The suspension in my opinion is significantly better than the standard MY that I test drove. I would not be writing this car off until you have actually driven in one with the upgraded suspension
@@davepoulsen1007 thanks for taking the time to give feedback from the POV of an owner. You have a point, but Paul not only pointed out the issues, but he demonstrated them. That said, It's certainly not going to hurt for me to take one for a spin, when the time comes.
I have the Mountain pass performance coil overs in my Model Y Performance and it handles very nicely. My stock Model Y Performance is more top heavy and has more roll in turns. I am considering changing to coil overs in the Y down the road. The Tesla is still a very nice car for everyday driving. The long range Model Y is comfortable but I wanted the extra speed from the performance. My BMW M3 with Dinan tuned suspension will out handle the Model 3 Performance in turns. You cannot go wrong with the Tesla it will outperform many other cars in this same price range.
We had radar on our Model 3, and was always slow to regain speed when overtaking on cruise control. I'm this this will be improved with software updates.
Just to correct you, the rear brakes on your performance Y is still the Brembo and NOT covers over Mando brakes you see on the US made MYPs. You can identify it by noticing the 2 dimples on this MYP rear brakes whereas the new fake brake covers are a smooth piece (can see difference if you Google the pics). MIC MYPs as still being made with Brembo rears, my RHD MYP was built Jan 2023 from Giga Shanghai and still has Brembo rears. I believe the change to the rear covers is ONLY on US made MYPs.
@@CarExpertAus Since about 90% of the stopping power is from the front brakes, the downgrade to the rears would have minimal impact. But I do prefer that our MYPs have the matching Brembos at the rear instead of some fake covers 🙂 Also I do find the brakes much more progressive than my Golf R, you really have to mash the MYP brakes hard but when you do, they do provide good stopping power.
I now have three Tesla’s. I have two Model Y’s and one Model 3. Overall the buying experience was excellent. There was no need to haggle over prices and delivery was exceptionally easy. However, there are some draw backs. Currently we have significant negative equity in each of our three cars due to the continuous price drops after purchasing them. In one case I took delivery days after a reduction and attempted to reason with Tesla but they would not provide any kind of consideration. The cars ride very nicely and are very comfortable inside. However, the claim that you will get nearly 300 miles per charge is completely erroneous. You may extend your range if you are constantly on the highway but you are actually getting about 100-150 miles per charge in your normal day to day driving. Use those as your true calculations as you figure whether it's better to go electric or gas. Lastly we just had the worst customer service I've experienced in a while when it came to their repair shop. Recently I had to take my Model Y to Tesla because the undercarriage piece broke off for going through a puddle! Yes, a puddle on the street made the undercarriage break off. The best part of this is that they would not even cover it under warranty as the Telsa repair MANAGER said that was an "atmospheric event." Do your research and see how many others had the same issue. You should consider this car from all angles before making a decision. Although it is an excellent driving vehicle, you will experience significant frustrations if you ever need to repair it or ever decide to sell your car. Do your own research on all of these issues and draw your own conclusions.
Congrats on your new Tesla Paul. We test drove one MYP here in UK and we were so impressed by it's performance, practicality and tech. But, we ended up buying a slightly used M3P a few days later and we will never go back to ICE cars. It is just an amazing car and i get free charge at work.
The performance Y is better than the other 2. I’ve owned one for a year. You can turn the performance into a long range by just swapping the wheels to the 19s and get the same range (and a slightly faster 0-60).
No. Test drove the 2023 Y LR vs the Y P and there was no comparison; the P just felt way better. Way more buttoned down, better steering and brake feel too. In the sweepers, just more body control. It just felt a lot different. Better. That made my choice very easy of whether the P was worth the extra $.
I got the Model Y performance to match my Model 3 Performance. I did not want to go from one car to the other and feel that something was missing. I am glad that I went with the performance model. The alternative would have been to purchase the long range and add the boost. It would still be shy of the performance model though.
All of the Toyota hybrids are exempt from the Australian tax incentives, thats why the Tesla model y is such a great car. Great review Paul, keep it up!
How do you find that the iPad on Wheels interferes with your eyes on the road? Don’t you miss having certain buttons for shortcut features? I can’t talk with my slow performing MG screen, but I miss shortcut buttons!! 😢
Took possession of my MYP 2024 last week and the seat belt rattle issue was the first thing I noticed after driving away from the Tesla dealer. What's funny is that I did the same thing he did ... I engaged the passenger side seat belt. I eventually took care of the rattle issue by buying some rubber covers for the seat belt housing sold on amazon. Rattle gone. Love my MYP otherwise. Great value for the buck in the US right now.
Yeah I’ll get one some day when I get sick of my Model 3. Deep Blue Metallic color is the best. Plenty of sheen and depth, and doesn’t attract cops eyes like Red does.
33:25 The energy consumption of standard model Y is equivalent to that of a petrol vehicle that consumes 1.92L/100km, based on a petrol price of $1.7 per litre in Australia.
The rear emergency lock couldn't be made easily available because children could then open the door. The lock is electronic so the child lock cannot stop the emergency pull cord.
Nice review Paul the Model y looks nice, i’m choosing between the model y performance and the up coming long range version and i would really appreciate it if you made a review on the long range cheers mate
Paul. The 250kw charging is only achievable at a Tesla supercharger. A CCS2 plug standard is limited to 500A as show when charging. Tesla superchargers can achieve 650+A on 400v battery to achieve full 250kw.
The NACS (Tesla design), charge plug and socket is ONLY fitted to North American model Tesla’s. The Rest of the World (ROW), uses the CCS2 standard so all ROW Tesla’s have CCS2 fitted and so limited to 500A@400VDC max. So the V2 Superchargers installed by Tesla in the ROW market will only ever be able to deliver 200kW peak! Hmm.. so Tesla is now fraudulently lying by advertising a 250kW charge rate on their vehicles that can NEVER be achieved.
I own an MYP. In sport mode it’s better than my previous X4M and Macan GTS. Makes them feel outdated. I would like more premium upgrade options for the interior though.
Yes the interior leaves a lot to be desired. It is far behind Lexus, BMW and Mercedes in comfort. I was willing to overlook a lot of the interior amenities in lieu of the stress free driving and cost to operate and maintain. You cannot beat the speed for the price.
its a good thing that the emergency release is hard to get for the back row. i definitely dont want people randomly releasing and damaging the car trim.
We swapped a M3 for a MY. My wife loves the Model Y but I avoid driving it when I can. They took the M3, made it bigger and forgot to engineer/refine it. We have 2 work BYD Atto 3s as well and if I have the choice I rather drive that.
very good video. one question --- no spare wheel and Tesla roadside covers only 80 km from Melbourne . In Australia long distance without roadside assist. What are your vierws. Thanks .Mohan
I like your honest review. Most other reviewers are Tesla Fanboys. People say Tesla is a sw company but to me they arent that good at it. Yes they are much much better tgan the competition. If Apple would to make a car it would kick Tesla's butt in every aspect. For some reason jo other serious condender from the valley. I xan see, it takes a lot more $$.
Charging speed of model Y was limited by maximum current of DC charger (500A). For 400 V battery maximum is 400x500=200kW, depending on actual voltage. 800V battery has twice the voltage so it could teoretically charge 2x faster with same current.
I think you’re confusing charging rate with the peak rate. Clearly the Tesla advertised 250kW is a best condition peak rate. By your logic the 400V charger can clearly supply 200kW continually but Paul’s said his real-world average charge rate is about 120kW when going from 10-80%SOC! This has ALL to do with the onboard charge controller and battery architecture - principally thermal management of the batteries, which clearly demonstrates a “ramp” rather than “flat” charge curve.
Hey Paul, out of curiosity, when doing the higher speed stuff, did you still have the steering set to comfort? We also have a MYP and and sport seems to feel less jerky and give a little more feel when having a blast in the hills.
Applied for a lease on a myp and got denied with a 800+ credit score no credit debt at all. Yet I apply for a 2023 Jeep grand Cherokee summit with a msrp of 72k and get approved on the spot with 0 down no proof of income etc. is that a common thing with Tesla to deny someone who has 20 years of credit with 100% on time payments?
Interesting video. I, too, owned a Model 3 Performance. I think we got seduced by the savage acceleration and the fantastic tech. BUT....the ride quality, the handling, the braking and build quality were awful. Eventually my family begged me to get rid of it because of the horrible ride quality and the fact that after just 15,000km, the car had more creaks and groans than a sinking ship. They really need to work harder on the ride and handling and now....the way Mr Musk keeps dropping the price on these things, depreciation could also be a bit of a worry!
@@pastorofmuppets8834 It's not the wheels and tyres. I've tried the long and short range versions also. It's fundamentally poor suspension set up. Feels like a cheap mattress.
Strange - Paul had nothing but praise for the ride and handling of his Model 3 Performance - and I’d trust him over someone who might just be making things up. If you are genuine - Did you create a service call with Tesla or just accepted the issue?
@@darrenprior6339 expensive but coil overs could also solve the issue. I've read many people changing wheel/tyre combo, particularly aftermarket (so much lighter) and it does change it.
Id still buy this over Kia or Hyundai. Its super fast but simply looks beautiful and menacing in Performance trim. I'lk never track my car so straight line speed is more important to me than being a Nurburgring champ.
We just took delivery of a Performance Model Y on May 10 here in Bangkok. Our Shanghai Made version has the latest AMD processor plus all the sensors and radar. We have front passenger electrical controls. We are now in the hottest time of the year in Bangkok with the most sun. We have no trouble with keeping cool in our car in the middle of the day as the coatings on the top glass are so good and the air conditioner will freeze you out. Every thing works great from delivery. Matter of fact we had zero delivery complaints about fit and finish. It’s boring to talk about but it was perfect. Tesla helped by arranging an installer to place a wall charger in their new operating area here in Bangkok. At the time of deliver and now there are only three superchargers in all of Thailand. Hopefully they will add more soon to ease our normal travel around Thailand that we have been taking our Everest to go to Trat/Kon Chang, Cheng Mai and Sometimes Krabi and Phuket. Since we charge at home we guess we will have much use for superchargers in town. Unlike so many reviewers we understand that “fiddling” with screen is not very necessary as it is a voice command car. This reviewer is hasn’t found the luxury of the voice command. Apparently he hasn’t even found that the Tesla has different Drive modes as he stated that there were none so the performance model S has chill mode, as well as normal performance, mode and track mode just as a note. We have now realized that this new Tesla is going to cost us more money than we thought as it make owning and driving regular car seem so ridicules. We are going to sell the other cars and order another Tesla.
No spare tyre? Sat in a Y recently and thought the steering wheel was made out of rubbish..... felt awful. Overall I was pretty disappointed about the whole quality/feel of the car. Considering the price it is obvious the battery cost is a huge component of the cost. Without a doubt technically the best EV. For me no local support what so ever (same even for the Hyundai EV, BYD). Chose ICE and what I found a more comfortable SUV the price difference will pay for my services/fuel for how long I'll have it.

MIC MYPs as still being made with Brembo rears, my RHD MYP was built Jan 2023 from Giga Shanghai and still has Brembo rears. I believe the change to the rear covers is ONLY on US made MYPs.
Crikey. The brakes weren’t very good after a couple of laps. Can’t imagine the step down in braking performance without Brembo.
@@CarExpertAus Since about 90% of the stopping power is from the front brakes, the downgrade to the rears would have minimal impact. But I do prefer that our MYPs have the matching Brembos at the rear instead of some fake covers 🙂
Also I do find the brakes much more progressive than my Golf R, you really have to mash the MYP brakes hard but when you do, they do provide good stopping power.
Do you know if the standard model Y 2023 get the comfort dampers? I've been delaying an order until this is confirmed.
As far as I know both the long range and performance model Y get comfort suspension for 2023.
You can turn the performance into a long range by just swapping the wheels to the 19s and get the same range (and a slightly faster 0-60).
will the 19" wheels clear the front brakes?
@@johannescarlsson4559 maybe some aftermarket wheels might fit but not the Gemini from Tesla. Says so on the Tesla website
You can adjust the passenger seat and then the seat belt won’t tap.
Also agree that they do need to fix the design though as it is irritating.
Great review Paul, keep it up!
nice to know battery life and cost and resale of past teslas... that would be helpful and eye opening.
How do you find that the iPad on Wheels interferes with your eyes on the road? Don’t you miss having certain buttons for shortcut features? I can’t talk with my slow performing MG screen, but I miss shortcut buttons!! 😢
Thank you for explaining the paradox of the LR models v the LFP batteries.
Good balanced review. Thanks Paul. I want to love it, but it's just not quite there. Still pretty amazing.
What a review! I love it! Hand down the best Tesla Model Y review out there!!
Can’t wait for the Cupra Formentor review!
I own MYP, and I believe it's by far better than the base model
For real. I own the MYP as well.
33:25 The energy consumption of standard model Y is equivalent to that of a petrol vehicle that consumes 1.92L/100km, based on a petrol price of $1.7 per litre in Australia.
Would you recommend buying this card for this price (75k)? if not what other car would you prefer to buy?
The rear emergency lock couldn't be made easily available because children could then open the door. The lock is electronic so the child lock cannot stop the emergency pull cord.
Nice review Paul the Model y looks nice, i’m choosing between the model y performance and the up coming long range version and i would really appreciate it if you made a review on the long range cheers mate
I went with the Performance model. I had a tough time deciding but the extra speed was worth it to me.
Great review Mate!
How do you think the sound system compares to bmw IX upgrade stereo?
IX is better by a country mile, I have both Y and IX
Well, I just ordered one, so I agree with all the positive cmments you made, and all the negative ones naturally won't apply to me or don't matter.
You can turn Auto High Beam off on Autopilot by simply pressing the left stalk forward
Is that new? It has never worked before.
@@CarExpertAus No not new. You just have to do it each time you engage Auto Pilot as it resets to Auto High Beam On after each AP session
No you can't. If your car has Tesla vision only it is controlled by the car. Paul is right
@@fakejake8965 This car has sensors and is not Telsa Vision only
Also the Auto HIgh Beam is working pretty well after a software update like 3-4 months ago.
2:45 you can adjust your headlights down(under) 😉 in the settings,.service, ❤
Great to see a guy who's reviewing one who actually has owned some.
Good honest review. Certainly needs more work for the high price (I drive a Model 3 LR)
So Tesla is fitting "comfort suspension " to Model Y? To brend new ones or to used as well?
Very thorough car review. Covers pretty much every detail.
Another wicked review, thank you 🙏
7:15-19:00. This car come free with that tablet 😅
Hey Paul when will you get your hands on the LR?
Oo.. more interested in the formentor review - especially if it's the hybrid
You can disable auto high beams when on auto pilot by moving the left stick forward.
when changing FWD/RWD bias it is still 100% 4WD in a straight line, only affects turning
its a good thing that the emergency release is hard to get for the back row. i definitely dont want people randomly releasing and damaging the car trim.
We swapped a M3 for a MY. My wife loves the Model Y but I avoid driving it when I can. They took the M3, made it bigger and forgot to engineer/refine it.
We have 2 work BYD Atto 3s as well and if I have the choice I rather drive that.
Excellent reviews always. Great work.
very good video. one question --- no spare wheel and Tesla roadside covers only 80 km from Melbourne .
If you want comfort ride, buy the Longrange AWD right..? I kind of like the harder version of the P
Would love to have this and a Paptor in my garage Paul, 😅 Congratulations you guys 👍👌❤
Hey Paul, out of curiosity, when doing the higher speed stuff, did you still have the steering set to comfort? We also have a MYP and and sport seems to feel less jerky and give a little more feel when having a blast in the hills.
I drive a model Y and after a week, I quickly got used to it.
Whats the Brand Name of your watch? Matches the car perfectly!
best car review ever! if only all reviews are that detailed
Great, balanced review, thanks Paul
They fixed auto high beams months ago. It was terrible but is very good now.
agree 100%
Is there any extra benefit if I pay outright ? Or if I use someone referral can I get free extra supercharge like USA ?
Love your video Paul. Just wondering what is this track ?
Does it already have paint chips in hood?
Have you updated the software?
Tesla's time is 0-60mph which is not exactly 100 kph and with one foot rollout. It should still do 0-60 in less than 4 seconds easy.
@@BigG2G Good luck with that dream. The FSD absolutely sucks
Did you try changing the wheels and tyres?
Paul, do you own rear wheel drive version have a track mode as well? 🤔
Do they need sports brakes with re-gen brakes?
Waiting for your detail review on Mahindra Scorpion! 😊
You're the best in car reviews paul,,, ❤❤my name is hamed in Azerbaijan 🇦🇿
So in Australia Tesla's are still being delivered with ultrasonic sensors?
Are we getting a review of that hummvee in the background at 46:07?
No spare tyre? Sat in a Y recently and thought the steering wheel was made out of rubbish..... felt awful. Overall I was pretty disappointed about the whole quality/feel of the car. Considering the price it is obvious the battery cost is a huge component of the cost. Without a doubt technically the best EV. For me no local support what so ever (same even for the Hyundai EV, BYD). Chose ICE and what I found a more comfortable SUV the price difference will pay for my services/fuel for how long I'll have it.
I assumed the Performance was the one to go for.... looks like the base model is the sweet spot.
Does the roof have a sliding cover?
Any imagery of this?
Where i live the Price on a Long range with 20 inch rims is the same as a performance. So I would with out doubt choose the performance.
Great vid. Hope to get a '25 Performance
Could you do a video with the braking(creep, hold etc.)
where abouts was this filmed? curious about the big circle track
Look at 10:25 on the nav screen you see his exact position
Good balanced review
oaul can you please do ownership update on your model y
