Anyone remember when Caleb took the rally Miata to that one event in the rain and it was embarrassingly slow? I’d like to see this run that same event again in its new glorious form
@@rubenbraekman4515 So its like getting new legs and finally being able to catch up with the synths or something. Just more power, but everything else is more dynamic and cooler lol
honestly the growth in this channel is insane- i remember watching back in the forza gaming days and the focus days but the growth is just insane- keep it up man
Yeah Devin Niemela powdercoats wheels and whatever else in an old oven. Any money spent on a setup would pay off very quickly as he does more and more parts
This has been my favorite channel since you boosted molly and had your wrx, amazing how your content continues to improve after all this time. Keep it up dude
Why I think your one of the better UA-cam channels to watch. You are eager to learn, you don’t act like you are the best mechanic, when you screw up, you call your own bull shit. You don’t hide your mistakes and you want people to tell you if you screwed up so you can make it better. And you can see how you are growing as a mechanic and fabricator.
I just finished doing some work on my 1982 Yamaha Seca XS400 sport bike. I replaced an almost 40 year old horn with a new one and took it for a ride around my yard and the private drive. SOS isn't open, so I can't register it yet. Best wishes for you guys and Peace out Caleb!
about the low views in the long videos, although thirty minutes of pleasuring gingium content is awesome, the algorythm doesn't recommend long stuff as often as short stuff; and sometimes, for some people, having a video too long can be frustrating. So although it's not as good, milking that watch time with the 17-min videos while keeping upload frequency might be the best for the channel.
Love to see your grind. You deserve more recognition. Don’t get me wrong I love Adam. But I don’t see LZ or TJ building a tube chassis by himself in a tiny shop
I'm so excited to see the Rally Miata rip offroad. Caleb, this has been a long time coming and I want you to know that I didn't stop my Patreon sub even tho covid happened cuz I believe in you and I want to see your dream come true. Happy to see the car running man much love!
I love how the bumper turn signals have been there since you got the car. The same exact ones with the circles. It's great cause I can see where it all started just looking at that small piece.
In my experience, spray paint takes a few weeks to cure, then it's just as good as car paint. I rear ended someone in my Jeep and the spray paint held up just fine (Rust-Oleum)
It is immensely satisfying to see you experiment and test, rather than just guess at the cause of a problem. Fyi in the future, try putting gopros in areas like the suspension. More information for you, and more interesting content for us!
There is a big difference between dynamic load and static load. The dynamic effect has the ability to double the applied load like landing from a jump. That being said, if you divide your static by 2 and ensure you're below that then you would want top stay below 10k lbs for those heim joints, so you're good.
Its looking great, you should make custom vents in the headlight locations for extra airflow, could look awesome, and add functionality at the same time
Always satisfying when you fix a problem like that, can be hard to find the source of a noise in anything mechanical sometimes. I would have never even thought of that and be pulling my hair out haha.
Moving the shock mount out on the control arm would make it have LESS leverage on the tire. I think what's really changed is the radius of the arc that the lower mount travels around is much larger than it was originally, you can see the strut swing in when you go from bumpstop to full droop.
That's just how it is when you're building custom suspension, Once you start getting into big boy coilovers it is EXPENSIVE. My fox 16" Travel coilovers were about 1200 Ish bucks with springs.
The shims will be ok for now but the best option is to move the lower shock mount inwards, as for the weight 1 triangulated brace bar on each arm will not be significant enough to cause any issues especially if you have properly valved shocks, but I also agree the way your building the car a long travel setup would be best over the extended shock your running now. Also cool wasn't expecting to see my comment in the video
How about mounting two fog lights right besides the oil cooler? Like some Hella lights would be awesome. Btw my car is also a blue rally car and everyone stares at it like crazy😂
For certain parts have you ever considered using the paint steelit? Alot of prerunner type trucks run it on their frame. Handles that pretty well and can even be welded on without grinding off.
Mounting the struts further inward on the control arms will give you more suspension travel for the same size strut. You will just need higher dampening and spring rate to compensate.
I also always found that regular spray paint is crap, but engine enamel is solid once you bake it with the oven. Audrey will love you using the kitchen to cook car parts, guaranteed 👌
Proposition: look on craig or other places for similar shocks you might want, EVEN if they are shot (as long as they're not completely destroyed, bent, mangled) you can rebuild most high end shocks. It's a good way to practice a cheaper option and a good video for you to put out. Most middle entry off road hobby drivers i know do this. Nobody puts crazy Euro into things that you can't sell or do other things with these days.
I love how just off the walls unique and awesome this car is. I’d drive it hard till the wheels fell off . . . then rebuild it and make it even more awesome.
Why don't you put a little three-way-switch on the steering wheel for the blinkers? So you can reach it with a thumb and let both hands on the wheel. Plus style points because of ariel atom.
Id like to see a full exhaust on it. Im sure it will still pop. My boys forrester is lovely with the Megan Racing dolphin tip i put on it. The welder cut after the cat and straight piped it to the new muffler.
You need top hats with coaxial spherical mounts, aka pillow block top hats. This allows the damper to swing around at an angle relative to the top hat, but the upper perch is always aligned axially with the damper shaft so it's always seating fully with the spring. 949 Racing makes some really nice ones. No shims needed. Get those shims out of there. That's some sloppy slop.
You could also build a push-rod suspension for the rear then you won't need to worry avout the length of the coilovers and also have easy acces to adjust them :)
Have you thought about using a 2k paint (2 part / epoxy) as an alternative to powder coating? (they also sell them in spray cans that you pop to activate)
Powder coat g*n (choose one you like) + any large capacity electric smoke box that hits the temps you need. IF you go on YT and search any number of restoration channels that do Tonka toy trucks, that's what they all use and it works really. And you know it works and that the powder coat is baked because they use pliers to bend various pieces back into their holes and so far, in the 20 30 videos i've binge watched, none of them have stripped the paint off.
I had the same sound on my mazda, turned out the problem was the metal clips that hold the break pads in the calliper were lose and rattling while driving.
Look up accutune when you do get new coilovers. They tune to the weight and design of the veichle. They will ride 100 times better than off the shelf coilovers.
So no reinforcement or covers for rear control arms? Triangulation? If stick would get stuck in there and you keep driving the lever would easily break driveshaft
Instead of not having the pop ups, how about make them popup but not as high to accommodate for the small lightbar like you did with Molly? should also source a WRX wing for the Rally miata :D Or some sort of wing, the rear end doesnt look like its complete seeing its missing that huge panel for the radiator
Because the shock is mounted so far to the wheel on the control arm it makes it change his angle a lot durinf travel. It shoud have been a little more sraight. This is what I think
Gingium hey buddy I subscribed a long time ago for the rally Miata. Love what you have done! Have you ever considered dropping her down to more of a stock STI height?
you can get a powder coating gun from eastwood for like $100 then just use a normal kitchen oven off craigslist or facebook marketplace to bake it. works great just dont ever cook food in that oven again
Who remembers when Caleb had the idea to put a Fiesta ST rear muffler on the rally miata? Think it was even before he had the supercharger on it! Hahahah long time ago.
What if Caleb made the headlight lids into mini air scoops for more airflow, like two more hood scoops for the intercooler, or maybe for the air intake instead Edit: And when some shift-boot gets put on the shifter, maybe cut out a small vent that can be opened or closed to get some airflow from the hood scoop, that'd be a nifty little thingy
well like i said a couple times in the past he should have gone with like king or fox coilovers from the start but the thing is,is that he would have to save up,but im glad he finally realized that ._.

I saw that, and I expected new control arms
Hi gingium, look for a old furnace it works perfect for powder coating and youre powder coat doesnt get worse if its a old or new furnace
Or build one like Junkard Dave did for his FC RX7
All he needs is a smoker cabinet. Tons of "restore" channels do that. Look up "tonka restore powder coat" and you'll find them.

I feel the the circles in the headlights need to be changed either removed or colour the circles white
Rubbing alcohol will take it off if it's just spray paint

I really love how caleb was stressing out and now he so HAPPY 😊
Have you heard of Steel-it? Lot of baja guys use it on cages and control arms because it's tougher than spray paint and you can weld through it.
I think a low duck bill spoiler would not only look cool but it would also help bring more air into the rear fans.

Use thick brush on paint on things you don't reamly see up close, may be somewhat stronger.

If you haven't already you might want to think about STI oil pan, sump, baffle, pick up etc... From what I know wrx motor has oil starvation issues.
Ditch the shims and relocate the lower shock mount on the LCA.. it's not a weeks worth of work man.

would turtle miata style headlights fit in there?
why not mount the shocks more inboard and use the leverage and length of the control arm to dictate how much travel you have?

id recomend making a skid plate for your headers just incase you hit a rock or anything
Could you not order taller struts with more travel, or would that not work because its a coilover?

so how would these coil over handle jumps i feel like he should get some prerunner type suspension
With digressive valving, just like front shocks on a drag car the pulls the wheels.
How about the sleepy headlights from Molly?
