I've been looking (unsuccessfully) for specific advice on how to use Trueplay correctly because I know from experience over the years that how it is done makes a big difference. For the last few weeks I've been trying out different setups for listening to music in my living room. The acoustics are not ideal (lots of glass and tiled floors) and my main (and for music the only) listening position is at one end of the relatively large (8m x 4m) room. The combinations I am testing are stereo pairs of Era 300s, Fives and Play1s. I also have a Sub (Gen 2) which I have tested with each pair, so you can imagine how many times I've retuned the room over the last month! My conclusions so far are as follows: the Era 300s didn't initially convince me for listening in just one specific position in that room (the listening position is a long way from the speakers) and I ended up moving them to my (smaller) home office in the room next door, where they sound absolutely superb. I find that pairing the Sub with the Fives doesn't improve the sound enough to warrant its use, but my favourite setup so far is the Play1s with the Sub. I know from a previous video of yours that the bass from the Fives is excellent and that's true, but I find there's greater warmth from the Sub. Another option would be for me to use the Play1s and Sub with a Playbase that I have in another part of the room but to be honest, I don't watch enough action movies to really make the most of a full 5.1 setup. I also know that if and when Sonos ever bring out the Era 500s, I won't be able to resist ordering them and I'm not sure what I would do with the Fives in that case. Ideally I would use them outside in two different covered areas of the garden, but I'm not sure whether they would survive the elements even if they are protected. Anyway, many thanks for all your videos, which I've found very useful over the years. All the best, Paul.
Thanks for your very kind support Paul! A lot of us here on this channel have this problem with finding new homes and use cases for the older replaced Sonos speakers so you are not alone! Adding a sub is always helpful and it really adds something. The difference is how much it adds. For the Fives, it does add a little but very little, which is why I don't recommend it from a value perspective. But if money is not an object, yes, of course adding the sub helps!
Just wanted to say thanks Peter, I’ve been going through all your videos now that I’ve added an Arc and Sub Mini to my Play 1’s… your advice on the Sub Mini was especially helpful as my wife does not like deep rumbling base, but she can appreciate tight smooth base and the Sub Mini was perfect !
Phenomenal! Thanks again for such an awesome video. Remarkable improvement in my arc, sub gen3 and 2x One SL's. My room isnt perfect so my true play tuning was a bit in between the normal and extreme versions. Sound is amazing!
@@macruz8503 and Mike, yes, I am planning for that but I really gotta make sure that I am 100% familiar with the Arc and Era 300s to ensure that I am clear what settings will benefit them. Now I am so caught up with work during weekdays and making the videos during weekends I can barely find the time to run through the movies. But one recent one that I have been watching over several installment is "Ford vs Ferrari" and that is mindblowingly good on the Arc with Era300s!
I totally understand Pete. I can tell you that Iron Man sounds awesome w/ the arc and 300’s, so does “Deepwater Horizon” w/ Mark Wahlberg and the part in “the Batman” where Batman starts his car and chases the Penguin in the rain… sounds crazy!
Hi Cuttyone70! Thanks for your kind contributions again! I did the iPhone X before and I didn't like it much. But like I explained in the video, the difference is minimal as compared to the difference brought about by the technique. My suggestion is to keep using the iPhone 6 because that was the phone that I tried before and worked well for me. But the problem is that Sonos S2 is going to stop working on that version of iOS that iPhone 6 is running on. So maybe migrate to iPhone X with that in mind, see if you like the results.
I do what you did, not the extreme, but I avoid body blocking speakers and attach my phone to a selfie stick and crouch/crawl on the floor - to wave in all the same areas with a focus on mlp. I find this to be more accurate then walking around, as your body is a factor that can alter how sound moves in the room.
Good informative vídeo Peter. I tend to use trueplay somewhat in line with your demo. The difference is that I move slower in up/down movements around my coach perimiter, making one single circle around it, starting at the center of the coach and finalising there as well
Great video! Any idea how I can increase the surround sound effect from the side firing speakers on the Sonos arcs? I don’t have dedicated surrounds, but have been finding the surround effect lacking on the arc in comparison to other standalone bars like the Samsung Q800 or Q900C.. The atmos height effect is great, and the recreation of something behind or side to me only sounds great when it has height as well. Otherwise, the surround effect is almost nonexistent.
Fantastic, Peter. I never gave much thought to the architecture of where I put the phone during Trueplay. I'm immediately going for the Extreme technique! Thank you.
Interesting, when comparing the Extreme Trueplay to no Trueplay the bass is much more pronounced in "no Trueplay". I like them both. I'm going to start experimenting with Trueplay now. Thanks, Peter!
Peter, I currently have arc + sub + 2 Era 300s. I have 20’ ceilings for the room I’m listening it and it’s huge. It’s basically and open floor concept that includes my dining room and kitchen. Basically 700 SQ FT. Any tips or suggestions for true playing in such a massive room. Should I just true play the listening area of the couch and tv or should I keep walking into the kitchen and dining room? Love the channel !
Are your Era 300’s on stands up firing? Placed to the sides even or just behind or to the rear facing forward? Have you tried mounting the speakers down firing; is so from what position?
Thank you for always providing great contents! I have Arc, Sub, and Era300×2 in my living room, I personally prefer Extreme True Play because it has clearer lines and a sense of scale in sound. Looking forward to the best setting!
Yes, it will differ from person to person as the taste for the sound is different for each of us. You can try the best settings that I have come up with and you can toggle on and off trueplay to get a completely different sound profile.
Thank you for the video! One question from me: I thought that with a Sonos home theatre 5.1 or better with Arc, Sub and rears etc. would be better to just sit in the MLP and wave around your phone? Also, I have a door in the room and it extend into a open floor kitchen -> should I stick to the couch only? Thank you!
Hi Peter! I´ve already bought a sonos beam and sub mini thanks to all of your excellent reviews, thanks for teaching me all this things I´m super happy! I need the video you are using in minute 21:00 to test my new products, where can I find them?? Please let me know If I can download them or something like that. Your awesome, thanks!
Hi Peter. Thanks for all the good videos and information! Can you explain a litte why you recomend leaving loudness on and what i the diffenrence in the freq response vs off? Thanks again! 😊
Would a Sonos Arc + 2x Sonos Era 300s without a sub be a viable home cinema experience for a 16 square metres living room? Currently using 2 Fives + 2 Era 300s because I don’t own a TV yet, planning to buy a 65+ inch TV this year. Recently sold off a sub mini after fear of disturbing elderly neighbours. What recommendation should I get for the next sonos to build up the system?
Peter, I assume the sound signature of the Arc plus sub has not changed since your settings video on update 14.18, but I could swear I have to turn my volume up higher than I used to for both movies and music. And yes, my Volume limiter is off. I just remember volume 20-30 used to be pretty loud for me, but now it's more like 40-50 for the same loudness and it really seems like this has been more recent than 14.12 which was 9 months ago. I did of course add two Era 300's recently, but I wouldn't expect that to cause this. I even factory reset Arc, sub, and both Era's, but still no difference. I noticed too that you said it gets extremely loud even at volume 15 in your little room with the Era surrounds cranked up with music. Granted my room is bigger, but shouldn't make that much difference. Speakers are about the same distance as yours. Just wondering if you compared the volume signature of 15.3 with the Era 300's to 14.18? Thanks again so much for all you do. It is so appreciated.
Hi Peter ! Great clips as usual! I am learning a lot from your clips since I started on the Sonos journey. Due to budget constraints I am using a pair of IKEA Symfoniks as the surrounds with my Arc and Sub Gen3. What do you think of the set up?
I come from a standalone reciever, two pretty decent speakers and a good Dali Sub. On paper (way) better than my arc and sub3. But the way it is tweaked and born to play together makes it a way better overall sounding system. The clear vocals and the Cinema-like sub which is precise, deep, tight and which goes in your’ stomach. Very happy. The trueplay does also tweak the sub level right?
Hello ! Peter I am in a dilemma now. I just bought the Sonos Arc on sale for $850 CAD plus 12% taxes here and two Sonos Five for $1060 CAD plus 12% taxes (awesome deals) but trying to justify if I need the Sub ?, please advise. It is not the money but trying to think if it would really add to the experience?
Dear Peter, i love you videos about sonos.. right now i have max sonos HT setup .. so big sub + arc + era 300.. i am using and nvidia shield as source... with connection to LG C1.. my question is: Canyou make in future some video about sound formats? and channels? I know that arc have some problem with DTS? and also atmos is just in some lower version ... but i am still lost in this . its really hard to recognize everthing about it. Can arcane solve something ? If you have time :-) Thank Radek.
Sir. I havent buy the sonos system. But im going to because of u! Thank u! Btw what system do u recommend for me for a 4room old resale HDB blk living room space. Im thinking of Arc+sub mini+Era100 pair.
Got two era 300 for my man cave. Quick question, when i pair the stereo pair back speakers for surround sounds , i get a weird cracking or it feels like its not pumping out the sound. Any help thank you
Please do a video on the Era 100, if the cost difference is worth it. You can get a twin pack of oneSL for $370 versus $500 for the ERA 100s. Is it worth it using them only as surround sound speakers with a Bean GEN 2 Center channel and mini sub.
Peter, do you think Sonos should not Add Mid’s in the EQ settings? Some people are up in arms about it. Do you think TruePlay just works too good to give a Mid Range EQ? Plus I know a LOT of people are also eager to have Sonos Support Front Left/Right dedicated channels example: ERA 300’s in front to support the ARC. Thanks for all you do! AMAZING!
Thank you Peter! Need your opinion. my rears are around 2.5m behind the couch and there is space behind the couch. Should i walk behind the couch too or just trueplay in front couch which is around 2m away from the arc?
@@PeterPee when you say around, you include the space behind the couch (MLP) too right? Or only to the sides? Sorry if i did not understand well... my english are not great.
Thanks for the reply in the live chat Peter. In that case, do you think going for the era 100s in the rear and then getting the sub too would be a better option? Thanks for all the great content 👍
@@PeterPee I haven’t bought anything yet, it’s more about budget. Would I get more bang for my Buck with the era 100s and sub or just the 300s? Thanks for being so helpful
I have 2 era 300 in my full surround system I’m sure you know what that is. My question is I have decided to try and hang this upside down with the Sonos wall mounts,do you know if the 300’s can detect like my five do if I have changed how they set? I feel I can’t really hear them. I have them at about 8’4” in hight. And about 5 feet from my listening position from the wall the are mounted to.
Try to increase the heights and the surround levels in the S2 app and see if it helps. Ensure that you go through the whole movie cos not all parts of the movies will have surround effects encoded. Speech, for example, mostly comes out from the front only..
@@PeterPee Thank you Peter!! So 300’s at this time anyways don’t recognize if you hang them up side down. I think the front should not cancel out unless you hang them upside down. I get what they are shooting for,but I feel it’s just a bit off that the front cancel out in surround. One more thing there truly is not one person ( and I do watch to much videos for my Sonos to get that edge) that dose the videos so well and so organized my friend!! Thank you being such a beast in what you so sir, hats off!!!!
THIS IS A LEGIT GUIDE - million thanks to Peter Pee ❤❤❤ Here’s my equipment - 2x One SLs in stereo and 1x Sonos One, iPhone 13 mini, Sonos ver 15.6, followed the MLP inward focussed method, bass sounds cleaner and punchier when playing local lossless music in FLAC. Previously, I had my EQ values were treble > bass. Following Peter’s method, I have my bass > treble - punchier bass as Trueplay brought out clarity where you don’t need extra treble.
Hello sir, i am looking to enter sonos eco, should i start with era100 pair or beam 2, primarily as sound system for my tv and for music listening as well
The Beam Gen 2 is designed to connect with eArc HDMI to your TV for Atmos/Spatial audio (only Dolby 5.1 with Arc HDMI). The Era 100/300 work best as stand alone in single or stereo pairs with or without a sub if you are not going to use them in Home theater surround sound configuration with the Arc or Beam Gen 2. There might be a sound delay when using Bluetooth or line-in for the Era 100 connected directly to your TV without an Arc/Beam.
@@mrgold3591 i will be using apple tv and connecting the era 100 via airplay, i want to be invested in it but music + movies is the priority, since spending all for complete system is not feasible, hence i am thinking where to start, i want to be exited and not disappointed and leave the journey in between
Hence starting with beam 2 would not be a ideal setup for music? What exactly i am thinking first era 100 pair then beam 2 and then sub mini or start with beam 2 then era 100 and then sub mini
@@sushobhitsingh2420 The Beam Gen 2 doesn't have bluetooth. It is designed to be used with an eArc TV for Atmos/spatial audio. The Beam has an option for optical, Arc, eArc, or you can use wi-fi to stream music (Dolby 5.1 only with anything other than eArc). The Era 100/300 does have bluetooth; but, bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth compared to using wi-fi or eArc HDMI to utilize the full Atmos/Spatial audio capability for Beam Gen 2, Sub, and the Era 100/300 speakers. Probably a stand alone stereo pair of Era 100/300 with line-in or wi-fi with or without a sub would give you highest quality depending on source audio; but, no home theater capabilities. Adding the Arc/Beam Gen 2 with eArc HDMI to the Era/sub will add to the overall spatial music quality and give you the home theater Atmos option. I like the option of the Beam Gen 2 plus the Gen 3 sub or sub mini and adding the Era 100, Era 300, One SLs, even IKEA Symfonisk bookshelf speakers when ready.
I always try to stay as close to MLP as possible during the second portion of trueplay and if it feels unbalanced I’ll re do it and stay closer to the side that’s over powering.
What's everybody's take on 300's as surrounds? Is the centre drive not firing an issue for anyone? Also rear speaker position, elevated vs floor stands??
You've just about convinced me to take the plunge based on how you day that you can't pinpoint the sound source now. I have that issue with the one's as surrounds, it draws my attention directly to the speaker as opposed to hearing it within the space. Cheers 👍
Android software is open source with a lot of versions and countless variations with each version. Apple I.O.S. is closed source and it is very easy to develop an app that will work on various versions of Apple products with way less software variations.
Cannot do with Androids still. You can turn on and off Auto Trueplay for Era 100 and 300s when used for music using an Android but still no trueplay for HT setups.
Hey peter, i am having an issue with my sonos arc. i feel like i cant hear dialogue very well and when i am constantly putting the volume up when im watching tv and movies to hear dialogue but when action starts happening i have to put it down because the noises are louder than the dialogue. i press speech enchantment, put the treble up, take off loudness, reduce the bass and even press the moon icon but nothing seems to help. Any tips?
@@haj619 a little bit yea. This guy peter never answered me but i use apple tv so i went to the setting on it and put reduce loud noises and the dialogue sounds better now. Still could be better but it helped a little
Peter I return my ERA 300 my open concept doesn’t help. I did purchase the ERA 100 and I’m back to my usual better now sound. Once again the ERA 300 wasn’t fit for my open living room concept. That’s why I returned then. TruePlay I have always done your way of explaining ✌️
I stuck with my Fives as rear surrounds for my Arc+dual sub set-up. My Xfinity cable only does Dolby 5.1, about +/- 30% of the streaming content I watch is in Atmos, and I only listen to whole house audio (zero spatial audio) less than 5% of the time compared to home theater mode. The One SL/Era 100/Fives send a laser beam of sound directly to the "sweet spot" compared to the Era 300 that depends on digital processing, placement, and sound reflection off walls/ceilings/floors to encompass the same "sweet spot". I can wait to see if Sonos comes out with an Era 500 or an update to the Arc version 1.
In your Trueplay tips, I got confused for a second because you had an ‘x’ for ‘turn off Aircon’. I read that as ‘don’t turn off Aircon’. ‘Don’t breathe loudly’ made sense to me, but the ‘turn off Aircon’ with the cross caught me off-guard. Can I suggest that you instead of using ticks and crosses, just to use bullet points instead? It would be less confusing like this

Very happy.
The trueplay does also tweak the sub level right?
Veo que tienes tus era300 pagados a la pared en el fondo yo las tengo a cada lado mío viendo al frente ¿cual es mejor atrás al fondo o a los lados?
Hello ! Peter
I am in a dilemma now.
Awesome! I received my first Sonos product an Era 300 and the Trueplay tutorial during setup (the video demonstration) was weak
It covers the basic, so it gets you going. But Trueplay is really finicky about HOW you do it.
@@PeterPee appreciate the time, effort, and how thoughtful you are in helping us sir
Got two era 300 for my man cave. Quick question, when i pair the stereo pair back speakers for surround sounds , i get a weird cracking or it feels like its not pumping out the sound. Any help thank you
Could be the sound mix in your material but I think I have read something about this before. I didn't get that though.
Please do a video on the Era 100, if the cost difference is worth it. You can get a twin pack of oneSL for $370 versus $500 for the ERA 100s. Is it worth it using them only as surround sound speakers with a Bean GEN 2 Center channel and mini sub.
I'll be glad to watch a video about your settings for Arc+Sub+era300's.
AMAZING!
😞
Excellent!
Thank you Peter! Need your opinion. my rears are around 2.5m behind the couch and there is space behind the couch. Should i walk behind the couch too or just trueplay in front couch which is around 2m away from the arc?
The area around the couch. So I go in between the listening position and the rear surrounds too.
No. Keep the era300. They are great for surrounds.
@@PeterPee I haven’t bought anything yet, it’s more about budget. Would I get more bang for my Buck with the era 100s and sub or just the 300s? Thanks for being so helpful
Your the man!!!
Thank you being such a beast in what you so sir, hats off!!!!
haha never thought id hear Peter say Taking a dump in the toilet and trueplay in the same video
Never have any problems with Arc “Popping” sounds?
dont you want the sound to bounce around the walls for atmos?
Yes, but your ears aren't going to be at the walls. The mic should go where your listeners are going to go.
is true play also available for android phones?
THIS IS A LEGIT GUIDE - million thanks to Peter Pee ❤❤❤
Here’s my equipment - 2x One SLs in stereo and 1x Sonos One, iPhone 13 mini, Sonos ver 15.6, followed the MLP inward focussed method, bass sounds cleaner and punchier when playing local lossless music in FLAC. Previously, I had my EQ values were treble > bass. Following Peter’s method, I have my bass > treble - punchier bass as Trueplay brought out clarity where you don’t need extra treble.
Do you have to (re)set the custom EQ and VOLUME levels in the app back to middle/zero before doing Trueplay ?
No, Trueplay will reset all the settings to middle/zero once I.O.S. Trueplay is complete. You can then adjust the levels a bit more to your liking.
@@mrgold3591 that's correct! So Timothy, no need to adjust anything. Trueplay zeroised everything on its own before doing its thing.
No Bluesound tests on Peter's channel?
@@mrgold3591 Thanks for helping with this query my friend!
I can't find treuplay in my sonos app, I have the latest up date in my app. Pleace who can help me?
maybe an Options
It should be in your settings
I always try to stay as close to MLP as possible during the second portion of trueplay and if it feels unbalanced I’ll re do it and stay closer to the side that’s over powering.
Try it and let us know!
What's everybody's take on 300's as surrounds? Is the centre drive not firing an issue for anyone? Also rear speaker position, elevated vs floor stands??
The Era300s work like how a bipolar surround speaker works. I'll explain in another video. But it's ok not to fire the center speaker.
You've just about convinced me to take the plunge based on how you day that you can't pinpoint the sound source now. I have that issue with the one's as surrounds, it draws my attention directly to the speaker as opposed to hearing it within the space. Cheers 👍
I'm intrigued to learn of pushback on the center speakers not firing in surround mode. Don't people trust the sound engineers?@@PeterPee
Has anyone tested mounting the era 200s faxing downwards?
When are we going to be able to do trueplay with androids I've got samsung? I'm using iphone 6s plus 😅 got it cheap used
Android software is open source with a lot of versions and countless variations with each version.
Super Thanks.
So do you retune when you get a new phone?
No need to retune when you get a new phone.
Any tips?
I’m having same problem. Did you fix it?
@@haj619 a little bit yea. This guy peter never answered me but i use apple tv so i went to the setting on it and put reduce loud noises and the dialogue sounds better now. Still could be better but it helped a little
Peter I return my ERA 300 my open concept doesn’t help. I did purchase the ERA 100 and I’m back to my usual better now sound.
Once again the ERA 300 wasn’t fit for my open living room concept. That’s why I returned then.
TruePlay I have always done your way of explaining
✌️
Cool Alex, I think yes, the Era 300s are bipolar in nature and they do need a bit of walls to bounce the sound off.
@@mrgold3591 Looks like you don't need the Era 300s but when (not if) they come out with the Era 500s, I am sure the Fives can be safely retired. :D
It would be less confusing like this
Oh... haha... good point there. :)
Does trueplay work on android samsuns s23 ultra?
Fell asleep watching this movie
Kind of a copy of what Bose has been doing for a long time.
Yes actually a lot of other manufacturers do that too. Including Sony. The AV world has various forms of room correction too.
So what ? Bose owns a patent for this ?
@@Jeannemarre Settle down bud! No they don't have a patent - I wasn't dissing Sonos or any other brand, I was just saying, kind of interesting though. fanboys really react quick.... I think it's great that all manufacturers use it for the best soundscape, I just wasn't aware that many/any do.
