I love the fact that you can actually combine the Power of the Primes Battletrap with the Siege Skytread figures. Since finding a spare Roadtrap nowadays is hard I bought two skytread just for the legs.
The name Skytread suits him better than his original name, Flywheels sounds more like an Autobot name to me and sounds like a perfect fit for another bot based on the Tracks mold.
Flywheels' split personalities arguing whether or not they call themselves by their original name or Skytread sounds like an awesome idea. But I think you neglected to mention that Battletrap will soon be part of *Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts*
Yeah that was something I overlooked since Rise of the Beasts got pushed back to next year. At least now if he DOES end up being a Duocon in the film (which doesn't look like he will though), fans will have a decent summary of the histoty of the Duocons.
I love that this was finally covered.I also did a bit of studying on this particular subject in the G1 continuities via watching episodes and breaking down fine contextual details. Personality components were also successfully split with Rampage and Transmetal Dinobot 2 in Beast Wars despite not being able to merge..Their sparks were sentient independents of each other. The essence of a Spark must be able to become/remain sentient if/when split although a mortal link remains. Death resulted in separation and not death. That is why I don't necessarily conclude Transmetal Dinobot 2 / Rampage was a true Duocon despute sharibg a spark. The revation Dinobot's essence remained meant separate essences entirely. Fun this expands into other continuities and makes a lot of sense of details.Great examples you use and great content Thanks again, Rodimus Primal!
I couldn't afford many TFs growing up, but as the Duocons were low price point bots, they were easy to procure. Thus, despite their lack of notoriety, they became two of my favourites, with Battletrap having a slight edge over Flywheels because of his cool colours and his rotor blade. I always wondered: as each faction had, for the most part, equal opposites, why no DUOBOTS? (Don't tell me Mirage couldn't have sneaked into Shockwave's lab and stolen his plans!)
I had Flywheels as a kid. I prefer him because his separate alt modes seemed to be more consistent with each other than Battletrap's. I remember thinking that Battletrap's truck was WAY too big in comparison to his helicopter.
The duocons have an interesting concept two vehicles combined into one robot. And with the new transformers movie coming out with Battletrap be one of the main villains and Flywheels appears war for cybertron seige, maybe they'll appear more into the future.
Flywheels was one of my first Transformers as a kid, and became one of my favourites. I remember quite vividly playing with him lots, so when the newer figures came out, I grabbed both (or all 3 depending how you look at it) when I could. I was especially impressed with how faithfully to the original the new SkyTread was, especially down to the colours and how they were able to modernize the look without making things seem out of place. An interesting thing with the new figure is how they coloured his cockpit windows. I believe it matches a knock off of the original G1 toy rather than the original (that was blank in that area). I'm sure this is just a coincidence or otherwise another explanation such as him being coloured to have blue windows in other official media, but it's also cool for me to think that designers remembered a bootleg from their past or found pictures of one, and took that route as a nod to how now adult collectors might have remembered the character, even if not from the official toy, especially if they wanted to colour that window and some shade of blue would make sense regardless.
This was an awesome retrospective, I never knew about these two, so this is all news to be, and it was greatly entertaining. Great video Rodimus, awesome work!
And now battletrap is going to be in live action movie transformers rise of the beasts as a terrorcon and not be a duocon but on his forehead he still has a decepticon badge
This was a great video about the duocons i got alot more information from this retrospective and i can't wait to see what they will do with battletrap in rise of the beast but still great video i leave a like and I hope you stay safe god bless
YES was wanting a vid like this, these guys are my favorite! The POTP and siege figures of them got me into transformers after being out of it since Armada.
It´s amazing how Transformers has so many and diverse characters, each one has it´s own unique powers and abilities, there are so many subgroups and that´s freaking amazing
My complaint is how many, toy wise, were nothing more than repaints. I understand the cost of creating the molds but still some characters need their own look.
2:47, for an Autobot...Flame sure is evil. 4:28, last minute ambush. I know for selling toys but this was quite a plan by Scorp as they were out of nowhere and having them to steal the data disk was something the Autobots didn't see coming. 4:52, so badass. 6:10, Duocon Powermaster?! That's a mouthful. 8:50, awwww...ain't someone happy to see Quake that day? He's got a fan. :)
I loved my childhood Flywheels as it was like he was transforming as fast as transformers did in the cartoon! The new generations versions of both of them are great too
Great video. There are some very interesting Transformers concepts after the show ended in the US. (Victory Leo) Don't think I've ever heard of the Duocons until now.
Always had a soft spot for Flywheels since his role in 'City of Fear' in the UK comics, and especially this classic moment of iconoclastic British humour on Simon Furman's part upon seeing Flame's army of zombie Transformers rise up: Ultra Magnus and the Sparkabots (in unison): 'By the Celestial Spires...!' Flywheels: 'Oo 'Eck...!'
Flytrap lol, what a missed opportunity 🤣 Can't think of a better way to start my long weekend than with a retro transformers video! Thank you for the perfect timing rodimus!
Recently I found Flywheels G1 in the wild (w/ gun) @ the comic shop & was thrilled! Stickers & & everything looked nice. My son likes him as well! Another great video sir- thank you! I hope all is well with you & your family!
Awesome Video. Thank you. I had Flywheels original release, always thought it was pretty cool. I understand they wanted to make the Siege version closer to the original by making the jet and tank just as components. But for the sake of consistency, I wish they would have had individual bot modes like PotP Battletrap. The pair look ok together, but it is still weird that one has individual bot modes, and the other dosen't.

It's always cool when obscure characters catch the eyes of fans or writers and get a comback tour, maybe with a more fleshed-out premise or execution. I like your sugestion at the end for future incarnations to play a little more with the original character personalities.
While I’m not a fan of battletrap’s POTP toy (though still happy to have him) I like to imagine that they were originally two seperate characters who were permanently fused together but both personalities still exist within them with flywheel/skytread’s components being Skyfly & Treadwheels so they could feasibly make both names I wish we had of seen some autobot counterparts to them though, particularly if one was a shuttle & steam engine so we could have easy repaints of Astrotrain and vice versa
I have the PoP Battletrap. I prefer the old concept where they can only form 1 robot together rather than the new concept of 2 independent complete robots. I find the codependency of the bots in the original design so much more interesting.
Flywheels was one of my favorites as a kid and one of the first I got with WFC line. When I was a kid, I loved all the Transformers that were quick changers. Made for easier play lol.
They did have some few appearance at the Headmasters anime as Scorponok's goons. The 2 vehicle merging into one robot gimmick was later applied to Overlord in Masterforce.
I like how the Titans Return one was 2 smaller robots that combined into 1 deluxe. They didn't market it very well on the packaging, though. I don't have many Legends/Scout/Core class Cons so it's nice to have them. Plus he's on display in my living room next to CW Bruticus.
Fantastic Retrospective video RodimusPrimal!!!!!!!! :D I think the Duocons are very underused characters who deserve a chance to be prominent characters in future Transformers stories. :D I really, REALLY enjoy having the PotP/Siege figures of them in my collection. They will always been known as Battletrap and Flywheels to me, despite their new trademark names. lol :D Keep on being amazing.
It's potentially a cool idea if they expand the sub class and add more characters. Also, if they could control multiple vehicles they could combine and seperate from in battle they'd be pretty powerful. I'm actually glad to learn there's a Decepticon recolor of Thrilling 30's Springer because he's one of my favorite figures.
"Fly" wasn't really an F-4 Phantom II jet. Autobot Fireflight and Bayverse Blitzwing were, though. Fly was just as original and unidentifiable of a jet as Wheels was as a treaded howitzer.
Interesting. Where I got that info certainly got it wrong then. Whenever I mention vehicles that I'm not familiar with I usually get commented about it. Like with Punch/Counterpunch transforming into a Pontiac Fiero.
Okay, it's coming back to me. I had a couple different friends who had these, but they never seemed "complete." I'm pretty sure now that it's because they lost one or the other robots...

Thanks for posting!
I agree. I hope we get autobot counterparts of the duocons, and the horrorcons, there is sky lynx and the monster bots, but still..
