  • The Nintendo Switch is coming up on its 3rd year which is leading to some JoyCon controllers to become loose and weak when locking into the railings on your Switch. Today we'll be changing out one of the locks on the JoyCon to see how hard it is to do and how it feels.

      This was intentional. The plastic absorbs impacts so that the joycon breaks instead of the actual switch, so you don't need to spend another 300.

      @ramensquid it's getting a little tiresome to lose my joy con for weeks everytime something is wrong with them (which happens frequently: drifting joycons, broken r button etc) while Nintendo could've avoided this in the production fase.

    This is great, thanks for taking the time to show joycon replacement locks in a proper video. I've had two sets of joycons' locks become unreliable, sometimes they become unlocked during handheld play and interrupt a game with the joycon connection screen. I'll definitely be curious to see plastic vs metal differences and wear, but I might replace one set of joycons for now.

    I used this same kit on my daughters switch and it worked great. Here's a tip... the tools the kit come with have a very sharp-pointy tip which is what tends to strip the screws. Rub the tips of the screwdrivers on concrete, brick or something hard only 2 or 3 times to smooth out the tip and it will grip much better.

    Don't expect spawnwave to respond, but I did this fix not too long ago and live by it. The metal clips are spot on to the platic and have and extremely satisfying *click* when you put them in. It's VERY important to TAKE YOUR TIME as to not damage anything but the end result is FANTASTIC.

  • @JonJaded

    Honestly, I wouldn't use the metal locks. The reason they're plastic is that incase you drop your switch, the locks will break first rather than joycon/switch rails.

      @@idonotmakevidsyet accidents happen especially with a handheld. this is why phone cases are a thing, and why the locks are plastic (portable tech falls, its how gravity works and accidents may not even be the owner's fault). Not to mention that not every user of the switch is an adult, plenty are little kids. Also, kind of a big thing, do you know what happens when metal grinds on metal/plastic? No need to be a butt not everyone is perfect like you probably are.

      What the hell are you talking about? The rails are actually quite strong. Besides, the joycon are light controllers to begin with. If you were to drop them, the only things I can see getting damaged are the housing or analog sticks which are very flawed in design. The people who liked your comment are non tech idiots... -.- I highly recommend getting these metal locks, it'll last you basically forever and it definitely beats rebuying more plastic ones over and over because it'll wear out every single time. 😂

About 2 weeks into my ownership of my switch at the time, I had already worn the left joycon's plastic clip pretty bad from using the joycongrip grip that came with the system (i guess i just got one with really rough/sharp edged rails because the Nintendo switch proper's rails are just fine). Another option to keep the joy con firmly attached is to use a grip in handheld mode.
    The joy con I got when the console released are a little loose and can come out without hitting the button. When attached to the Satisfy grip it applies enough pressure to hold them in place and I don't need to worry about them falling out.

    I've known about these kits for about a year now, everytime I get a pair of joycon the first thing I do is replace those buckles and it gives a more satisfying click imo. I'll admit the only downside is that dropping your switch is more likely to actually damage it as the joycon are no longer act like shock absorbers and unlatch when struck. Of course you have to drop your switch in a very particular way before that becomes a failsafe so I really don't see it as a downside.

    Just got some from Amazon a few weeks ago but the right joy-con presses the Home button on it's own at random times or when another key is pressed, along with the weird controller drift problems think I'll send them in to Nintendo before I swap out the latches and just pray I won't have the same problems in a few months.

      You need to clean the joysticks

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus 5 років тому +5

      This is either calibration (which you can do in settings menu), or if that doesn't work, it's probably dust/dirt buildup under the stick itself, which you can fix by disassembling it and cleaning it out.

    • @moodkapps4346
      @moodkapps4346 5 років тому +2

      If calibration doesn't fix your issue take an air can ( one you would use for cleaning a computer ) and lift the flap under the joystick and blow it with the can from every direction. You might see some guck come out. Im not sure how to fix it if that does not work however.

    • @0121zero
      @0121zero 5 років тому +2

      @@moodkapps4346 using some alcohol cleaning solution worked for me, you can get the cans with the spray nozzle so you can get right into it, look for some that's 90% or more

    Whenever I put my joycons on my switch I hold the button until the joycon is all way on instead of letting it click then when it's on I let the button go same thing when taking it off just dont like stuff to wear out but hey that's just me lol

    Left joy con started doing this with time, but I'm too nervous to to open it up, plus it only comes off if I force it or lean my palm on it while playing in handheld. I got a Mumba case too so it's good.

  • @StormsparkPegasus

    The only issue I see with using metal clips, is because you want the rail on the system to be the more durable part, since you can't (easily) change that out. The way it's designed right now, if something does break, it's designed to be the joycon itself which can be replaced or fixed much easier. I rarely take mine off the system though since I have a Pro controller, a spare set, and a charging grip.

      Actually you can replace the rails yourself, it's not hard
      And replacements (genuine parts) are also dirt cheap

    I feel like it might be dangerous if you drop the switch and they land on the Joy-Cons. The plastic clip might be there for a weak spot so the Joy-Cons get damaged and not the Switch itself.

      How about not dropping the switch then?
      Ok, I get that hardly anybody would willingly drop their switch, so that's not actually an argument but as somebody who basically never dropped any expensive tech his whole live (unlike a certain Linus), but is suffering from bad joycon locks which may end up letting the switch slide out, I prefer metal locks.
      Should I ever drop the switch and it gets damaged i'll simply fix it with replacement parts if possible or deal with my loss.

    • @nikkothegoblin
      @nikkothegoblin 5 років тому +8

      Considering I’ve dropped it due to a loose joycon, I’ll take a metal lock at that risk. You’re pretty much going to damage the System if it takes a bad drop, regardless

    • @akasakasad6271

    A video about a Joy Con not making contact with the Switch would be a lot helpful. I've been having this problem for a couple of months now and It's really wierd. I have to wait until the Switch has warmed up for it to make contact with the right Joy Con and detect it. Someone suggested that I should synk the Joy Con again but it just keeps doing the same thing. Then I saw a video about cleaning the switch contact with a toothbrush and that helped a little since it makes contact a little bit faster but still have to wait for it to detect the Joy Con.

    I have a launch day switch. Besides the bluetooth problem, the rail lock broke first week, taking it from the wrist strap attachments. Nintendo replaced the whole thing.

  • @dewinter1411
    @dewinter1411 5 років тому

    I hold the release buttons down as I slide the joycons ON and let go once the joycon is in place. You dont get that nice click sound, but you keep the plastic from rubbing, which is the cause of the problem. Easy fix.
