5 episodes in... its completely different but I loooove it. The thing i love abt the changes is that i dont know what to expect. Its like seeing it for the first time again. Yes there are a loooot that i wanted to see but that wasnt there but overall i am loving it.
Gran-gran is the biggest complaint I've heard about the first episode. I think everyone is expecting a relatively 1 for 1 adaptation when that never happens. I enjoyed this for what it was.
Episode 6 now, no spoilers, but I'm surrendered. Is not perfect, but I can feel the essence of the OG. Some ppl might don't like for several reasons, but I chose to be open to anything and I'm enjoying so far. It's way better than that 2010 abomination.
After waiting for YEARS I have to say I’m so happy with what they’re doing. The differences are keeping it fresh for people like us that’s seen the original like 10 times lol and it’s staying true to the story for the new fans! Thanks for making these videos!
My dad and I absolutely love the new live action version of Avatar. I found the best way (for me) to enjoy it is to take it for what it is, and judge it based upon its own story and what the show is crafting for us, with a more mature tone (not as lighthearted and playful by design). This may be a rare opinion but, I consider this series as having nothing to do with the animated series. Things may overlap, but I place no expectation this will have any of the animated scenes. I expect everything will be different. I found some scenes that were very enjoyable within the context of *this* world. I love the “Easter eggs” that reference the original, though. It has the spirit of Avatar, but it’s also a new story of in the world of Avatar that we haven’t seen before. Again, I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who views the live action this way: a new story inspired by the animated series.😅
I am with you on this! I loved it! It's definitely inspired by and draws a lot of references from the original animated series but packs its own punch and improved storyline that is relatable and nostalgic! I don't mind the acting, they're not bad, not too great either. It's not Meryl Streep or Gary Oldman, which adds to the relatability because most people don't over react to many scenes in their lives. That 'holding back' type of acting is part of growth (as an actor) and part of human nature to restrain emotions. If you say they did bad with acting, it means you were expecting a 1-1 comparison from the animated series which shows another medium which has artistic liberties to enhance facial expressions through caricature. Live action is real life. You don't go crying or laughing with your mouth 8 Inches wide open. Haha
It's indeed live action. It has flaws, like the overexpectations of flawless people to expect it to be perfect. Well they will be sad to know that it having its flaws is perfect for me - the live action series is perfect as it is! It allows you to sense reality with its ups and downs, including the dull moments which are actually breathing spaces for your mind and heart, to get you ready for the bigger scenes, more dramatic scenes, more action-packed scenes. In real life you are not wowed all the time. Check out the many slow paces and dull moments at the first part of Avengers End Game. You'll get the point.
Love this. That’s very much the way I went into it. I’m excited to see what they choose to do the same but I’m also super excited about all of the changes and differences! Happy you enjoyed!
@@JonesVibes thanks! I'm rewatching the series again because I want to digest the story - how Netflix wants us to see and feel it - without losing the essence, heart, quirkiness and thrill of the original. They made quite a lot of changes, but they all make sense for me! My take on the animated series after watching the first book is - wow, this is amazing! I can't wait for the next book to see what will happen and how it will progress. My take on Netflix's live action after watching 8 episodes of the first season - wow, this punched my heart like a lot of times, very nostalgic, not a 1-1 adaptation, many changes, but man I'm stoked! I'm immersed into the world of Avatar, like an actual, livable, relatable world! I'm sensing people will start dressing up like these characters this coming Halloween because they are touched by this! I can't wait to dress up like Zuko! Iron got me on tears like a ton of times when he didn't even speak!!!
I binged it right after getting home from work. Solid 7/10. You could tell it was Gordon's first major lead role. Still satisfied and want more! Another season please Netflix!
Also, I gotta say I like the change where Aang isn’t running away from his responsibility like in the animated show… he just needed to clear his head. He had every intention of coming back 😭
Yeah me too! It feels like more sense and actually he doesn’t really don’t want to be the avatar but he just not ready yet to bcm the avatar, i mean he just a child
Yes! Aang is now smiling in the new live action Avatar The Last Airbender series however unlike 2010 Aang, he never smile or joke in this movie which came out in 2010. I hope you Avatar The Last Airbender netflix series is good. 👍💯😄❤
I watched all the new ATLA season 1 from Netflix, all 8 episodes and I LOVED IT! I'm a huge fan of the original animation and watched that a few days before the Netflx release, just to compare and get the essence. 9/10 for me! The essence of the story is there! Plus, there is SO MUCH HEART! I CRIED A LOT! Even though they mixed up some items, or didn't include quite a lot, the new Netflix version made a lot of sense and cohesion from a live action storytelling that becomes relatable to humans - translating animation (imaginative) into live action (relatable) yet enhancing the world building, character arcs, character history (for most of them, including Azula and Ozai - sweet surprise!), the buildup, the surprise moments, the music, effects, the final episode! Oh my! I took the tip from others to watch it with new eyes and an open mind (without doing a 1-1 comparison with the animation) and I really loved it! Action-packed, good balance of drama, comedy and nostalgia, and packs (or bends) a lot of heart! I'm watching it again!!! I'll be watching it for the next 20 days!!! I just love it!
It was kinda confusing In the cartoon version of which is more advanced in water bending. There are scenes where aang is more advanced and knowledgeable than katara and yet by the end of the season 1 they made katara came out ahead when they both taught at the same time by master paku. So I really like the changes in this adaptation. They made aang unasured of himself and waited until katara got stronger so she could teach aang water bending.
I actually think it’s good they skipped the bit where Katara was jealous of Aang because he seemed to take to waterbending so easily when it was hard work for her. Instead they have Aang say the line “You’re a natural” to Katara, so she gets to be a waterbending prodigy. We know Toph in season 2 will be an earthbending prodigy and by season 3 Zuko will have mastered his rage and will have learned lightning redirection and will learn the true meaning of firebending from Ran and Sha. With no sign of Jeong Jeong at this point, and no training from Pakku, this means Aang’s teachers will _all_ be his best friends, each a master in their own right before they start training him. Don’t forget Gyatso who trained him in airbending, that applies to him too. (“I _am_ your friend. I will _always_ be your friend.”) There’s a certain … balance … to that. When they get to season 2 there’s going to be a time jump because the actors are already 2-3 years older right now. It could open up with Aang already knowing some waterbending that Master Katara had taught him in the interim, and her drilling him on a new technique.
I've finished the whole season, and I give it 7/10. The goods - Personalities of the characters are on point - Set and CGI - Music - Fighting scenes (especially Zuko) - Dialogues and jokes - More back stories - The changes they made in Omashu - The avatar's return is not widely known - Zuko's notebook The bads - Missing the core of the season, Aang doesn't learn water bending at all - Roku isn't Aang's avatar guide - So little earth bending, even Kyoshi and Omashu guards don't do much of it - Spirit world and the spirits are off - Too many scenes of Azula - Some wigs look ugly (Iroh, Yue, Sozin) - Katara lacks expression, and bending development
I think they are still working on the cgi for Earth bending thats why they don't use it as much here, probably waiting to go all out for season 2. For me, the big bad was the change with Bumi. That was the only major change that threw me off.
My score for each episode out of 10. Spoilers ahead for each episode. Ep1 7 solid start pace was a little fast but loved the new things they added with earthbending spy and air nation genocide w/ backstory. Ep2 8 Suki is so likable in this. I thought getting rid of Sokka's sexism would ruin the development of their relationship but seeing Suki be interested in Sokka because of his travels was pretty cool to see. Thought it was hilarious watching Suki try to flirt. Zhao was much better written in live action vs original. Ep3 7.5 I liked the way they combined Mechanist and Jet in the same episode Jet would definitely not agree with the Mechanist in the original and its cool to see that in this show. Ep4 7 I knew secret tunnels was going to be added to the Omashu arc of this show its too small to be its own episode but it's so popular it has to be added. However didn't like the new twist on it. Liked the original where the crystals actually did lead the way and badger moles liked music. Bumi was kind of a jerk but I did like the lesson he was trying to teach Aang in the end. Ep5 4.5 Koh stuff was just so strange. He didn't have to be a part of the Northern Water Tribe arc but he doesn't seem like he deserves an entire 2 episode arc. The pacing was weird also Katara and Sokka get captured and it feels like Aang has so much time to rescue him no urgency in that rescue. Ep6 9.5 by far my favorite only reason it's not is because the Koh stuff is still going on. Loved the twist of Zuko's crew being revealed as the same crew he saved in the war meeting. It's an addition that feels like it can fit in the original and that's what we all wanted to see similar to how we see the Ozai and Azula relationship at this time. Ozai manipulating Azula by comparing her to Zuko. Ep7 8 Yue is a little different than I expected. I liked the idea that Pakku tricks Katara into taking someone else as a master and not just outright refusing her from the start. Felt a little more subtle. Also allows Katara to learn healing with a more open mind. Ep8 7.5 cool finale seeing Koizilla was alot more impactful than I expected. I thought it would be a quick 2 min fight but it went on for a good 10 min which was good I just thought it would be tough on the budget. Wasn't a fan of the idea that Aang essentially sacrificed himself to do that and the only way he could come back is if Yue gave her life to the moon. Also really not a fan of the fact Aang has learned absolutely nothing with the other bending disciplines once this season is over. The main reason they leave the Northern Water Tribe is because they're ready for Aang to start his earthbending training but now he hasn't even started waterbending. I guess he's going to stay in the north off camera for a long time training in the north and that'll explain the aging of the cast. But now we're going to see Aang go from never bending Water to essentially a master in the start of S2. Katara will probably also make a big jump also since even though she was called a master she still has a lot to learn. Overall the changes were big for the overall story but they kept the point of why each character is in the story. Jet is still an example of going too far. Mechanist is an example of the exploitation. They added Great Divide, Fortuneteller, and pirates as offscreen stories which was expected but glad they actually confirmed they happened. Sad there's not Jeong Jeong but maybe they add him for S2 or S3. Overall the series I'd give a 7.5/10. And still looking forward to future seasons.
Thanks for writing this out! I’m with you on some stuff and there are other aspects that I actually really enjoyed (Koh specifically). Happy that you enjoyed it!
I think the reason they put Gyatso in that avatar state scene because Aang have known him for like since forever while he has known Katara and Sokka for only one day so it kinda makes sense that he remembered Gyatso's speech and calmed down.
Right. Let it be Gyatso’s spirit and his memory that talks down that Avatar-state rage. That was beautiful. Then, once Aang is back to being just a vulnerable little boy, let it be Katara’s wordless embrace that gives him comfort. Simple human compassion from shared grief. That’s beautiful too.
leaving out the yip yip scene and aang saying take care of appa until i get back was odd it would have been a short and simple thing to add that would make more sense than sokka and katara just getting on appa and taking off. Aside from that i loved the first episode.
18:03 this part here I got right. I said that it's Aang going into the Avatar State at the Southern Air Temple for when he finds and see Gyatso dead. I got three thoughts right, of what I thought could be in the episodes. This one was number 1.
I began watching this show and turned it off after a few minutes - - It looked so damn amazing that I’ve decided to watch it on my projector. So hopefully I’ll get a couple of episodes watched tonight. In the meantime I’m avoiding all ‘noise’ about the show. I’m not even watching your vids, Jones, until at least a couple of episodes in.
Okay, lets say they did a really good job with combining the storylines! I do think that key moments like Katara being mad at Aang for being better in bending. Aang messing up and burning Katara or Sokka finding out that Jett is a scam and him coming up with the war balloon, are missing. Builds character, I think that is the reason people feel like its rushed because there is not a lot of minor payoff. I hope they fix this next season. I give it a 7.
aang didn't learn any water bending at all from pakku. and katara is her own master. i wonder if they just gonna make katara teach aang with no pakku at all.
I reallyyy enjoyed it! i even watch it with my mom and my mom was really serious and enjoy it when watching it, not perfect but it’s a good adaptation so far!
I think it could be a good thing that katara took the scene on apa, I think that in the original, katara’s prgression was a bit strange. She just became good overnight it felt, in this series we see them building that progression for her a bit more stable witch I like.
RIGHT! The way I see it, he’s a military kid, and Hakoda left him in charge of a whole village. In the cartoon the village was smaller so him being immature and dorky was passable, but here the scale of the Wolf Cove is much larger and so Hakoda handing all that responsibility to a teenager would have been ridiculous unless he had the skills and maturity it takes for it. Maturity means to me, no ego, no ego means no reason for Sokka to have a thing against girls fighting. Especially since I thought the SWT wasn’t upholding the sexist ideology and that’s why Gran Gran ran away before? I mean why trade one prison for another? Dgmw I love our dorky sort of douchy in the beginning sokka, but I think Ian did a fantastic job with showing us his protector/leader side and he was still very deadpan and had funny one liners. Plus there are still insecurities he has to overcome which create his arc (despite the non sexist attitude shocker). Imo his arc is following a different route than the show which I appreciated as someone who used to get tired of the comic relief treatment sokka kept getting in the cartoon. Like yes he’s the meat and sarcasm guy, but that’s not ALL he is, so seeing the seeds of what he could be here with the mechanist and Suki was very exciting to see for me! Sokka not liking it when Katara bends because it’s dangerous if anybody catches her bending bcz of what happened to their mother!!! Like those are good logical changes that filled up plot holes I didn’t even know existed 😭 That was a good scene! It didn’t need the “leave it to a girl to mess it up!” I did miss the distortion they gave water bending though- how it’s not magic but an art form etc; Zuko and Sokkas single combat fight also made sense. It was a good plot device and demonstrated sokkas true strength: his bravery and heart. He may not be a good warrior, but he has the heart of one. I like how that’s brought up later by both his love interests and the mechanist. Sokka def has a cohesive arc, ppl are wild for getting hung up on the sexism thing.
I loved it ❤ for me its a 8/10. What I like abaout the changes is that we never know what to expect and then, suddenly, a secundary plot from the cartoon gets atached to the story...
I'm also at 7... maybe it could've been 8 if they hadn't changed Bumi so much, and I kind of wanted more of Jet's story. Maybe if it had been 9 episodes, Jet could've gotten his own episode.
Love the format to the reaction videos!! I’m only 2 episodes in myself but I’m enjoying the show! Not as much as the original but it has potential. I’m happy as a fan so far
Heck yeah!! Yeah this reaction was a ton of fun. I’m happy that I did it and I’ll definitely do more in the future! 🔥I’ll be breaking down the episodes as normal for the rest of the series!
Im glad you like it so far can't wait to see you react to the rest. I'm already on episode 6 and I'm loving it even though I have some nitpicks here and there. Overall I'm just glad this netflix proved avatar the last airbender can be done good in live action especially after the horrible 2010 movie.
Thank you! I’ll be posting most of my reviews and breakdowns this weekend! I think this will be the only full “reaction” I film for the series but there will be plenty more where this came from hahah
Already finished and loved it. Can't say I loved the first couple eps but I feel the nitpicks I have about it were for necessary changes. Exposition is a bit heavy but they really set up the rest of the show. Was not expecting how brutal they were going to make the firebenders though. Sozin killing that earth bender.... holy hell. Did I just pun? Unintentional...
The only negative thing I have about the episode is that Aang is flying way too much. That changes so much about the show, especially Zaheer. Other than that the acting was amazing and I was crying half the episode lol.
he wasn’t flying like superman dude, he’s if anything using air bending to glide down with style. i don’t get how ppl think he was flying. zaheer was flying like Superman
More focus on CGI resulted in bad fight choreography. Very bad story telling cutting out most of the good moments. Most of the characters were changed to a so called serious tone (looked mostly boring and less iq level). Aang zero waterbending in first season. Katara learnt waterbending instantly. No character development at all for any characters. Remake season 1 with a proper story and properly fleshed out characters who develop as episodes progress. Also please include the humour and seriousness balance which was made the animated series great. Rename this season 1 to a different name. You guys made this season 1 to irritate the avatar fans. Your netflix series is too detached from animated series.
I loved after the first episode. The thing with young actors they have choppy scripting if O could make 1 comment. The adults did better cause they have more experience of acting where as the kids this is their first or second show. So to me the acting needs to be solid not like they are reading off a script it needs to flow. Gordon kinda trying to hard to his script as well.
The kids are as good as what the Harry potter cast did when they were kids. People are way too harsh with them. As someone who Grew up with harry potter and still rewatch those movies. The kid acting aren't really a deal breaker in the long run.

That was the point
Heck yes! I know… it’s fun seeing all of the changes and in some aspects, not knowing where it’s going!
I missed Iroh's lightning redirection teaser during "The Storm", but we need to have something left for S2 and 3.
Also I think they wanted to put as many s2 characters as they could because they want to cast them before s2 starts
Gran-gran is the biggest complaint I've heard about the first episode. I think everyone is expecting a relatively 1 for 1 adaptation when that never happens. I enjoyed this for what it was.

Good on you mate! You’re a true fan. Let’s support it so we can get book 2 & 3!
It’s really rough…
Happy for you man!! Enjoy the rest!!
if the series was like the cartoon, people would hate it, because it "is 1 to 1"

By rhe way, that was firelord Sozin that attacked the air temple. Azulon wasn’t a firelord yet.
Yup you’re right! haha
Azulon wasn't even BORN yet. Sozin only got him after the war started, which is crazy. He was ancient.
Completely obsessed
Same haha
The Gyatso scenes all made me cry. So much heart in his performance
Right?? It really got to me hahah

Yeah it made it even sadder because we knew he wouldn’t
i like how azulon demonstrates he can burst people into flames using their own body heat. this scarier than bloodbending

Great insight. I'll add one thing about Yue. They didn't want her hair to look like a member like the 2010 movie made it look like 😂
Thanks for writing this out!
23:21 he is definitely my Sokka. Hard to believe it sometimes.
All 8 episodes down, solid 9/10. Itll get better as the seasons go on. People hating for views n likes.
Absolutely! Negativity sells unfortunately
leaving out the yip yip scene and aang saying take care of appa until i get back was odd it would have been a short and simple thing to add that would make more sense than sokka and katara just getting on appa and taking off. Aside from that i loved the first episode.
I love your videos! They are raw and true and give so much emotion.
Heyyyyy thank you for saying that! I very much appreciate it! Yip Yip!
All the episodes were great. 10/10 review.
Yessssss
Jones they did it I binge it and there’s changes that fans will like and not like so don’t try compare it to the original
18:03 this part here I got right. I said that it's Aang going into the Avatar State at the Southern Air Temple for when he finds and see Gyatso dead. I got three thoughts right, of what I thought could be in the episodes. This one was number 1.
I began watching this show and turned it off after a few minutes -
- It looked so damn amazing that I’ve decided to watch it on my projector.
So hopefully I’ll get a couple of episodes watched tonight.
In the meantime I’m avoiding all ‘noise’ about the show. I’m not even watching your vids, Jones, until at least a couple of episodes in.
hahahah yesss - I’m going to be just giving my normal breakdowns for eps 2-8, no reactions. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I can respect that!
I reallyyy enjoyed it! i even watch it with my mom and my mom was really serious and enjoy it when watching it, not perfect but it’s a good adaptation so far!
Yay!
I think it could be a good thing that katara took the scene on apa, I think that in the original, katara’s prgression was a bit strange. She just became good overnight it felt, in this series we see them building that progression for her a bit more stable witch I like.
Verrrry true. I like what you’re getting at with that
I have to admit i was fuming about Sokkas lack of sexism when it was announced, but you don't even really notice it. Its a good show.
Sokka not liking it when Katara bends because it’s dangerous if anybody catches her bending bcz of what happened to their mother!!! Like those are good logical changes that filled up plot holes I didn’t even know existed 😭 That was a good scene! It didn’t need the “leave it to a girl to mess it up!” I did miss the distortion they gave water bending though- how it’s not magic but an art form etc;
Zuko and Sokkas single combat fight also made sense.
And that all comes down to proper care of the character. You can tell they went to great lengths to make sure that he felt like Sokka.
its a sad day for The Last Air Bender.. it is very bad.
I loved it ❤ for me its a 8/10. What I like abaout the changes is that we never know what to expect and then, suddenly, a secundary plot from the cartoon gets atached to the story...
Yeah I’ve really been liking that too
1:37 Sozin!!
Bro that’s Sozan NOT Azulon lmfaoo
Yes it is! haha I’m happy that my error brought you joy I guess?
@@JonesVibes it’s no big deal just was like wait a sec 👌
People are getting upset online with reviews and tweets because it's already way better than the original
About a 7-7.5 for me overall after finishing the show. Changes I liked and changes I didn’t like but overall a good show.
I'm also at 7... maybe it could've been 8 if they hadn't changed Bumi so much, and I kind of wanted more of Jet's story. Maybe if it had been 9 episodes, Jet could've gotten his own episode.
I’m happy that overall it sounds like you at least had a good time!
That was sozin not Azulon
The show was a good watch if you’re a fan. Some of the writing made no sense to me though.
That fire lord in the beginning is Sozin not Azulon
I like the adaptation
Same!!
@@JonesVibes i am eagarly excited to watch season 2
@@JonesVibes when will the second season release
@blackwidow-hi6tz I would imagine 2026 probably. Hopefully no later than that!
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Already finished and loved it. Can't say I loved the first couple eps but I feel the nitpicks I have about it were for necessary changes. Exposition is a bit heavy but they really set up the rest of the show. Was not expecting how brutal they were going to make the firebenders though. Sozin killing that earth bender.... holy hell. Did I just pun? Unintentional...
yeah, Sozin completely roasted that guy. He has a very.... warm grip.
You did just pun and it made me so happy haha
@@JonesVibesyou're welcome🔥
That wasn’t azulon. That was sozin. Sozin started the war azulon is his son. Ozais father
Yeah I got called out for that already hahah simple mistake by me! 🙋🏻♂️
I think you're getting the firelords mixed up. Azulon is ozais dad. Sozin is in this episode
You’re absolutely right
The Fatherlords
The only negative thing I have about the episode is that Aang is flying way too much. That changes so much about the show, especially Zaheer. Other than that the acting was amazing and I was crying half the episode lol.
I don't think he is actually flying, he's falling with style lol
he wasn’t flying like superman dude, he’s if anything using air bending to glide down with style. i don’t get how ppl think he was flying. zaheer was flying like Superman
Well as you can see in my reaction, you’re not alone with the crying hahah
He was flying unassisted, he was bending the Air currents around him to move around.
Hey I love ur hat
Thank you hahah
I thought that was Sozin... Azulon was Ozai's father. Right?
yes you're right that's Sozin
Yeah y’all are right. You’d think after watching the original 15 times my short term memory would be a little more long term hahah
@@JonesVibes 😊
I like it but it is not as awesome as I like to believe but cast is good Episode 5 is awesome
I’m happy you like it!
I’ve honestly been impressed by pretty much everyone so far! Even Momo! haha
