Marathon is based on movement, you get more damage when you have more momentum especially with the melee attacks its sorta floaty kinda like halo which is what gives it the bungie fps feel
Marathon's maps weren't fully 3D. They were 2.5D, just like Doom's. But because of the way mapping works in Marathon, two rooms can occupy the same space on the map without being physically connected. This is how you get room-over-room architecture (or impossibly overlapping architecture, in some levels).
It's a huge gamble for Bungie, and being myself a huge Marathon fan I don't even know what to expect. I'm not into extraction shooters, but who knows what Bungie is really cooking there, only time will tell...
Live service games are either a mega hit or complete flop. Putting out a mega hit is more and more difficult as the market is saturated, which is made worse by the fact that live service games are updated with new content and even engine upgrades. This means new games dont even have a technological or graphical advantage over established games. This means Marathon is going to need such compelling gameplay that people abandon the games where people already have bought tons of battle passes skins etc. and a established player base. I would rather a story based Bungie game with a fun multiplayer like Halo, even if it were a PlayStation exclusive that I can't play, rather than a multiplatform live service game that I won't play.
I love the art style and I still feel it's a shame we don't get a coop campaign. It would have been great to have a Halo Reach retelling in the Marathon universe.
The way the pistol and carbine work in Halo is directly from how it works in Marathon. In both games the pistol is laser accurate, while the carbine sprays like a hose.
I remember Marathon but didn't have a Mac so I never played it. I only learned about it's deep lore from watching MandaloreGaming's videos about it. I've never played a HALO or Destiny game. I do love the way that new Marathon game looks. It's gorgeous, but I won't play it either because my pc won't be able to run it. The only Bungie games I've played is Myth II: Soulblighter and the demo for Oni. They were really cool.
Ya know.... does it _need_ to be PvP? Its pretty clear to anyone paying attention that the Battle Royal and PvP Extraction market has been done to dead, exploited, and is now bone dry. But there is clearly a HUGE, untapped demand for PvE extraction games.
2:30 - Incorrect. In most of my earlier lan parties we never setup a router in our lan space since most of my friends didn't even have internet. We just had a 24 port network switch, all pc's would just get assigned a manual IP and we were off playing.
I do like the aesthetic of what Bungie has shown so far. I just hope Sony doesn’t fumble it by trying to squeeze every cent out of it. Likewise, I hope the passion/vision of its dev team didn’t get muddled by the layoffs.
okay i need help here guys, everyone keeps saying the extraction shooter genre is over saturated but too my knowledge there are really only 2 well know played or received extraction shooters, that being HUNT SHOWDOWN and ESCAPE FROM TARKOV. can someone clue me into the other ones that make this market over saturated because where i stand there are only really 2, no ?
I have yet to play an extraction shooter that felt like it fully fleshed out the idea of extraction shooting. Cool loot, fun battles, fun pvm and pvp elements, and rare items and stuff to unlock. Most of these extraction shooters being released people are trashing on, are just dogshit games themselves, the idea of extraction shooters isn't bad. The implementation and every version i've played is fairly boring and bad though. Maybe make a game that isn't dogshit, and it won't be dogshit? Wild premise I know.
@@Dethmeister I have 42 Hours playtime on hunt atm, I'd say it is one of the better ones, but my issue with hunt is how slow the PvP gameplay is, how long the load times are between games/finding teams, and how they dont have maps full of people for some modes. Finding a person takes forever sometimes and it just can feel extremely boring.
Fact check: (0:10) actually, wrong. pathways into darkness was bungie's first FPS game. (0:41) there are many cases of lesser known franchises/games getting reboots. for example: rise of the triad 2013. (1:00) these are SPRITES. 2d SPRITES. using PIXELS. Voxels are 3d. (1:45) That is untrue. it was faux 3d just like doom, but used little gimmicks to give the ILLUSION of a multilayered 3d space. (5:50) Halo was originally connected with the marathon franchise (just like every previous Bungie game) but Microsoft owned the rights to halo and Bungie wanted out. (7:50) Like I said, every bungie game is connected in someway canonically.
Idk how successful this reboot is gonna be but i have a bad feeling for bungie to reboot such an old title as a trend chasing extraction shooter instead of going the classic halo formula with a strong Campaign and fun Multiplayer with vast earnable customization or the destiny looter shooter route or heck even mixing em in the middle of those two ip would probably be more successful then trend chasing. Marathon is a huge risk even more when you factor the current issues with Bungie and its upper management.
Destiny style weapons with lootable parts and customization would be incredible, but hero's/classes? No thanks. Asking for balancing nightmares and it takes away from the feeling of separating yourself from the pack by LOOTING and extracting with rare loot that gives you the power over your enemies. Destiny built some solid characters and had some amazing moments and storytelling, praying Bungie can revive that feeling, but won't be surprised when they fail epically.
I actually think Marathon makes for a great setting for an extraction shooter, the potential is definitely there. Of course, the real problem isn't that the genre is "over saturated," it's that there hasn't been a single AAA that has shown they understand what makes extraction shooters compelling, and everything I've heard so far about the new Marathon tells me that Bungie doesn't get it either.
I was excited when i saw they were making a new Marathon expecting it to get the Doom 2016/Eternal treatment, then i saw it was nothing like Marathon at all and stopped caring about it immediately. If this was a kick ass reimagining of the old Marathon games with an upgraded arena style multiplayer I'd be hyped, but I don't give a shit about extraction shooters so I'm out.
This is wild that they’re putting so many chips into an extraction shooter. Especially seeing how all bungie fans are playing Destiny 2 right now so they won’t get a crazy amount of that playerbase because destiny players don’t want an extraction game for the most part. Just who are they making this for?
You're asking the right questions, the problem is most of these big corporations will only fund what they think will be the next Fortnite. It's just hilarious that every new game trying to be the next Fortnite fails spectacularly. With a few exceptions. But I have zero interest in Marathon, or any other pvp based game.
correct me if i'm wrong but didn't Duke Nukem 3D also use a raycaster just like Doom and faked upwards and downwards camera movement with a clever trick?
If Bungie were just going to remaster the original trilogy i would be interested But it looks like they are going to take a cool shooter, throw in cash shops, arena pvp bullshit and DEI garbage. all that is wrong with modern gaming and stuff it up. Count me out
IMO its bungie, the name is known for halo and destiny, two major gaming franchisees. they will get players, no matter what the game is. If the game is bad i could see it being the end of bungie as we know it. Both destiny games had pretty shaky launches, and it took time to get them to a place that people enjoyed, but they were still fun games to play. If this game fails, i don't see buingie bouncing back. They already got sony up their asses, and can't really afford another fuck up.
Whenever something gets announced and turns out to be an extraction only shooter, I get so disappointed. Hasn't the extraction shooter craze completely died? The market is so oversaturated and exhausted. As much as I have loved their past franchises, I can't get behind this one. I want to blame Sony, but this has probably been in development since before Sony acquired them. They probably started a few years ago when the market for extraction shooters was big and needing competition, but with how long it's taken them, the genre has fallen off. Oversaturated and not enjoyable for a vast majority of gamers who do not like the pace and consequences of extraction shooters, it's alienating a huge amount of potential players. It's probably going to fail. A near 30 year old IP that is older than most of it's target audience isn't going to give it any leverage, just look at how the extraction shooters with Call of Duty and Battlefield behind their names failed spectacularly. I hate to say it, but then limiting this to just an extraction shooter is going to hurt it's chance of success, especially when Bungie's previous franchises have excelled at multifaceted experiences. Destiny is a prime example, having everything from a massive amount of single player content, to multiplayer cooperative content, MMO style cooperative raids and dungeons, and a huge PVP side of the game completely separate from the rest, many players often only playing PVE or PVP and rarely touching the other. Bungie is not going to get a Halo or Destiny level of success from Marathon. It's doomed from the start :(
@HM-ky6xp I'd say recent gaming trends and numbers cement it tbh. Take the most hyped extraction shooter to date being Grey Zone Warfare, it was plastered everywhere along with sponsors, streams and hype from every UA-cam channel under the sun... it now has a peak of 1000 players daily. Let's take something even more popular with Call of Duty, a game with ravenous fans and a reputation for accepting anything thrown at them. MW3 has 200k peak users daily and yet DMZ has an active showing of just 2k players daily... that's 1% of the playerbase.... Take Escape From Tarkov as another example, a game many herald as the epitome of extraction shooters which provides a far more tense environment throughout an entire match, than a final circle does in any Battle Royale... it has 24k players daily and has an average view count of 3k on Twitch. The extraction shooter fad is dead and has been for awhile, people may show initial interest for the first few weeks and that's about it. Imo it's a good thing it's dead, it never evolved or progressed in meaningful ways and any relevancy it had deserved to die out.
@@geddybear9108 Tarkov and Hunt were designed for it and have their stable niche. All others were shoehorned into it and their audience slowly rejected them. A single game mode can't support a game forever. Custom maps/modes of Half Life, Halo, Warcraft 3 and some other meanwhile were turned into whole separate games by developers, who stole the ideas from creative players. And whom now are afraid to create such solid independent sandboxes anymore.
@TheArklyte GZW was built from the ground up for it, so was arena breakout despite being free and seeing huge interest on launch has a peak of 3k players. @@geddybear9108 I think making extractions limited and time based through out the map would make an extraction shooter more intense once they’ve been used no one else can use them and then have something called the final extraction that spawns in and you’d have to fight over it to escape giving you that one last chance to escape if not you die with the map that would give that final circle br type intensity that all extraction shooters are missing , plus having the same idea as hunt where you all have the same objective meaning the monsters that you’d have to find and kill and then wait til completion is 100% also making them you’re only means of profit to buy weapons, perks in the market etc Most extractions are walking simulators where you go on for literally nothing I think there’s so much more that can be done with them like the ways i just explained

Destiny already made money with their expansions, and now they're investing time and money into Marathon so they can get a second income of money in the future.
@@xx_amongus_xx6987 they basically have the one game that is funding their studio on life support and it's gotten so bad that it's actually dying. This season is so bad I think it might kill Destiny.
@@xx_amongus_xx6987 doubtful. They completely tarnished their pvp reputation with the D2 playerbase by abandoning them for a new cash grab opportunity.
This is barreling towards being the next Concord TBH.
My thoughts exactly. It's DOA.
I agree 100%, I'm actually looking forward to it tbh
It might very well. But at least it has more visual style than Concord.
I love the art style and I still feel it's a shame we don't get a coop campaign. It would have been great to have a Halo Reach retelling in the Marathon universe.
Man, I remember playing Marathon2 in the dorms in college. Dual shotguns were a menace. XD
How old are you?
The way the pistol and carbine work in Halo is directly from how it works in Marathon. In both games the pistol is laser accurate, while the carbine sprays like a hose.
7:50 In Destiny 2 there's also a warlock chest ornament called the s'phtish robes, basically a copy/paste of the enemy model
it's ugly though
100%. It's so bad that I've never used it and I still recognized it when the model was shown in the video
They were really cool.
wow, 14 secods in and already a blatant wrong statement.
Bungie's first First person Shooter wasn't, Marathon. It was Pathway into Darkness. facepalm.
I will unfortunately fail, they should have focused on a story driven game
I’m excited to see marathon. The art is amazing and the gameplay seems enticing to me
As a longtime Marathon fan, I think I can speak for the majority when I say we don’t want an extraction shooter. We want Apotheosis X on steroids
Nah I want extraction shooter
Ya know.... does it _need_ to be PvP? Its pretty clear to anyone paying attention that the Battle Royal and PvP Extraction market has been done to dead, exploited, and is now bone dry. But there is clearly a HUGE, untapped demand for PvE extraction games.
2:30 - Incorrect. In most of my earlier lan parties we never setup a router in our lan space since most of my friends didn't even have internet.
We just had a 24 port network switch, all pc's would just get assigned a manual IP and we were off playing.
Marathon is my favourite game of all time. It ain’t even close. So much nostalgia for me
Let me guess only trios no solo.
Nobody has that many friends...
I do like the aesthetic of what Bungie has shown so far. I just hope Sony doesn’t fumble it by trying to squeeze every cent out of it. Likewise, I hope the passion/vision of its dev team didn’t get muddled by the layoffs.
The enemy at the 20 second mark is wearing a robe that the warlocks from Destiny 2 can get...nice😂
No. I in fact knew that marathon was bungies first fps. Thanks, Mandalor.
I played all three Marathon games in grad school and also released a homemade set of levels that at least some people liked.
Marathon was the first PC I ever got with my own money. I got sad that they destroyed my childhood.
The new Marathon looks pretty crummy tbh. Like the f2p shooters you see on steam.
The enemy with the red cloak and green orb in the middle looks almost identical to one of the chest pieces for the warlock in destiny 2 3:09
The enemies have on the wyrmgaurd gear that warlock have as an ornament for the chest piece
okay i need help here guys, everyone keeps saying the extraction shooter genre is over saturated but too my knowledge there are really only 2 well know played or received extraction shooters, that being HUNT SHOWDOWN and ESCAPE FROM TARKOV. can someone clue me into the other ones that make this market over saturated because where i stand there are only really 2, no ?
I have yet to play an extraction shooter that felt like it fully fleshed out the idea of extraction shooting. Cool loot, fun battles, fun pvm and pvp elements, and rare items and stuff to unlock. Most of these extraction shooters being released people are trashing on, are just dogshit games themselves, the idea of extraction shooters isn't bad. The implementation and every version i've played is fairly boring and bad though. Maybe make a game that isn't dogshit, and it won't be dogshit? Wild premise I know.
Hunt Showdown looks good.
@@Dethmeister good game, but most everything in the game handles really clunky (character movement, aiming, etc).
@@bwhere45 They did something with the aiming. A new option to choose between the original crosshair placement and a centered crosshair.
Correction: *Pathways Into Darkness* is Bungie’s first FPS game.
This was the first FPS i played on the family Mac, and some creepy pyramid game.
Fact check:
(0:10) actually, wrong. pathways into darkness was bungie's first FPS game.
Will marathon have a story? Halo was primarily a story-driven game with multiplayer
We have entered the Era of Nostalgia "Rebuilds".
4:00 -- There's no auto-aim in Marathon actually
I was excited when i saw they were making a new Marathon expecting it to get the Doom 2016/Eternal treatment, then i saw it was nothing like Marathon at all and stopped caring about it immediately. If this was a kick ass reimagining of the old Marathon games with an upgraded arena style multiplayer I'd be hyped, but I don't give a shit about extraction shooters so I'm out.
extraction shooter/ battle royale NEVER will combine with this game...
This is wild that they’re putting so many chips into an extraction shooter. Especially seeing how all bungie fans are playing Destiny 2 right now so they won’t get a crazy amount of that playerbase because destiny players don’t want an extraction game for the most part.
Just who are they making this for?
4 the Stocks and all the people the shareholders swear would want a game like this (they will fail big time)
You're asking the right questions, the problem is most of these big corporations will only fund what they think will be the next Fortnite. It's just hilarious that every new game trying to be the next Fortnite fails spectacularly. With a few exceptions. But I have zero interest in Marathon, or any other pvp based game.
Had no idea what marathon was, born in 97. Doubt the kids know either.
correct me if i'm wrong but didn't Duke Nukem 3D also use a raycaster just like Doom and faked upwards and downwards camera movement with a clever trick?
Marathon should’ve been bungie attempt at the new doom style games
Marathon Durandale was my favorite. Loved these games back in the mid 90s
If I hear PvPvE one more damn time...
I remember getting motion sickness from this game
this game is gonna be like frank herbert rising from his grave to write a new dune book that only exists to copy twilight.
2:35 I miss LAN parties
If Bungie were just going to remaster the original trilogy i would be interested But it looks like they are going to take a cool shooter, throw in cash shops, arena pvp bullshit and DEI garbage. all that is wrong with modern gaming and stuff it up. Count me out
I really hate that Bungie is wasting the Marathon I.P. on a trend chasing multiplayer game instead of a true-to-form single player focused game.
It's doomed from the start :(
All I see is the T'au Empire Logo. 😂
Ive been very excited for this game
Extraction shooters already died, people just forgot to tell the devs.
Don’t think so they all just missing that intensity that a br has when it comes to the final circle
It doesn't matter if a mode is integrated into a game or not that depends on its success. CoD Zombies, Resident Evil Mercenaries mode, Gwent from The Witcher, Horde Mode in Gears of War, Fortnite (yes Fortnite was a side mode) there are countless that have attracted and kept players attentions because they were done right.
Wether it be a side mode or ground up it doesn't matter when the genre is dead and doesn't have any interest to be taken.
@@geddybear9108 I think making extractions limited and time based through out the map would make an extraction shooter more intense once they’ve been used no one else can use them and then have something called the final extraction that spawns in and you’d have to fight over it to escape giving you that one last chance to escape if not you die with the map that would give that final circle br type intensity that all extraction shooters are missing , plus having the same idea as hunt where you all have the same objective meaning the monsters that you’d have to find and kill and then wait til completion is 100% also making them you’re only means of profit to buy weapons, perks in the market etc
Most extractions are walking simulators where you go on for literally nothing I think there’s so much more that can be done with them like the ways i just explained
I think a new destiny would be sick but they need to do something new with it or a complete refresh all around. I miss the destiny 1 days. So many good times I want those times back but destiny 2 was just a copy and paste and i got burnt out.
I want marathon but people don’t know about it and thus don’t care
It’s not going to be anything like the old game.
This one has nothing to do with Marathon. And likely with old Bungie. Have there been anybody from old Bungie left, who hasn't yet retired?
6:04 that's actually the Forerunner's symbol for "Reclaimer" 🤓☝
Well I’m out. I don’t do extraction shooters. The game industry really needs some story shooters again.
Apotheosis X in the thumbnail is the only reason I clicked
Another DOA game , They should of made D3
It has tau logos? From 40k
I grew up on the original Doom, Wolfenstein, Heretic, and Duke Nuke’m but I’ve never heard of Marathon.
probably because it's a Mac only game. We must be similar age, and I too had never heard of Marathon prior to learning that Bungie was making the game because I play Destiny 2
WRONG! It was Pathways into Darkness.
because bungie is a failing company and cant come up with a new idea so they are try to revive an old ip no one cares about back when they were a real game company. and wow surprising, an extraction hero shooter.. we don't have enough of those..
So it IS safe to say that every gamer on the planet knows about the Halo franchise, you will not be harmed, but it is probably not correct since Halo is not popular in Asia.
I was excited at first, cause I loved og marathon. Then I tried destiny 2. I will not be trying marathon
Why turn Marathon into an Extraction? No reason.
Its just mining nostalgia.
Halo is more Extraction. You could be a criminal running thru New Mombassa, weaving between Elites vs Brutes vs Cops / ODSTs
New to me. Never heard of it.
marathon was in fact NOT bungies first fps
Bungie of back in a day no longer exists. Bungie now is a predatory company. They don’t deserve anyone’s time or money.
Marathawn gat a real shit but if they charge 70 bucks on lounche my god they have lost the plot 40 bucks at most.
