Thanks to Rob for the help with this review. Feel free to stay until after the credits to hear my baby son's best efforts to sabotage this review! Haha. Have you been waiting for SaGa Frontier Remastered on Nintendo Switch? Does this remaster do the original justice? Let’s find out! Glen
As Xenogears is my GOAT all I want from SE is for them to port / remaster the game to modern systems. What they are doing with saga frontier and legend is exactly what I want
Xenogears is absolutely mindblowing, until disc 2 syndrome hits. If you could get that redone sure, but it's not just a remaster to finish that game. It is *very* roughly finished, and while I beat it eventually the final battle needs a lot of tuning to not be so difficult.
@@ChazTheYouthful Xenogears definitely has its faults like the tell don’t show disc 2 but to have easy access to it again both on the TV and handheld I’d gladly take a port of the game warts and all.
@@ChazTheYouthful I would not conpletely eliminate the sitting-in-the-chair narration scenes. If I temastered the game, I would restore access to the World Map in the "Anima Relics" storyline.
A bit unrelated to Saga Frontier. I would've loved if a game engines started to explore pre-rendered backgrounds again with a modern take on it. I mean look at the Switch, it has excellent graphics capabilities. however, rendering real-time 3D require reduction in image quality, low framerate, and bad battery life. What would happen if the 3D engine rendered a 2D scene and had a budget of 500-1000ms (instead of 16,67 or 33,33ms of real-time 3D) those 2D backgrounds would look incredible and could be rendered on-the-fly during screen transitions. Crisp 1080p, heck, perhaps even ray-traced. It would be an amazing way to save on space (since textures are highly repeatable in comparison to pre-rendered backgrounds) it would also play into that 90's nostalgia... and I must say, some games don't really benefit from real-time 3D. Many could easily be made with fixed perspectives in mind.
Due to the difficulty of the game, you really look forward to scouring the areas in the world for gear and potential allies, rare enemies that will let you absorb their skills/parts. That leads you into all sorts of adventures, many that will lead to your death and if you have no saves, the end of the playthrough lol. Saving was a pain in the ass back in the day. Emulators had a save state feature that made loading and saving so fast and easy and did away with those issues. This game is an extremely underrated classic.
I know what you mean 😂 when I first had it I never had a memory card I remember running into an impossible boss and the game was lost wasn’t until I convinced my family to buy me a memory card that I could explore but confusion nonetheless lost the game after it was scratched like crazy and handfuls of toothpaste to “fix” lol
Oh man, oh man... This old game is still one of the best ones out there. You guys are right to say that in this JRPG, one can really get lost. Ah, the old JRPGs are still awesome to this day. Will definitely buy this one.
Looks like a great remastering of the original. I would definitely like to have this in my library if it goes on sale down the road. Thanks for the great review guys
Honestly at this point I have so many JRPGs on my Switch that they’re starting to band together in an almost threatening way. I shudder to think of the power they’ll be able to exert once their master, SMT 3HD, arrives in May. Protect yourselves! Hide your kids from the life-affirming menace that is the JRPG!
Looks like another good rpg that I had missing out on. There are many PS1 RPGs that I wished I get to experience when I was young. Glad that Square Enix are putting a few of PS1 games to Switch.
This is a really nice surprise. I had a friend who couldn't figure the game out and didn't like it so I wrote it off back in the day. Kinda sad I did because it's really charming.
Wonky controls are the standard for these retro revives, product of their age lol, so it’s good to see the other categories score well. Really wishing chrono trigger gets its re something sooner than later
I think this looks very interesting but with so much coming out this month, the review has helped loads to decide whether I need to spend my hard earned £ on it. ty
Glad to hear this game is worth it. I will trust you and especially your son and look forward to playing this game again. When I first played it on PS1 I was about 15 years old but I didn’t really like it. However, back then I was infatuated with Final Fantasy 7,8, and 9, and Xenogears so I don’t think I gave it a fair shot. I was in the fence of giving this game another chance but your son convinced me lol. I look forward to more reviews with both of you in em
Christ, until today I've been referring to this as "Salsa Frontier" based on the logo when I saw it in the Eshop. I chalked it up to some odd translation choices. Saga makes more sense XD.
Back in the late 90's when it was released, I also thought it said Salsa Frontier. I picked up the remaster yesterday and showed it to my wife, who read it as... Salsa Frontier XD It's a combination of a dumb capitalization scheme and poor font choice. At least the game is good.
Is it possible to remove the screen overlay with the buttons on the right and the arrows showing where exits/entrances are? I want to play the game without all that junk on my screen.
This is one right here I wish I played as a kid! But me knowing what I knew then and what I hear now. I don't have the time I once had where I'd be able to enjoy this the way it should be!!
Not quite. Its kinda hard to really nail down, but basically unlike Octopath, you don't play the whole cast at once and unlock their stories as it becomes relevant. You basically choose one character, play through their story to completion, then play another. You can however recruit some of the other characters from different scenarios into your party in certain areas. Nothing is really kept from one playthrough to the next though if memory serves. There is one character who you do unlock that his scenario is essentially a what if scenario to all completed scenarios however.
@@j.d.6915 Yeah, theres no real connection between the scenarios beyond that they all take place in the same universe. You might see another character at some point in their story, but you don't really play out their stories at all. They're just there to join your party. The final character is the only exception to that however.
Great video as always! I’m playing the game now and is really trying my patience 😆 you really do need a guide to get the most out of it! I don’t have any nostalgia for this one but I loved Saga Frontier 2 and that’s me hoping they remaster that one too. And, you should include your son in your next videos!
Appreciate the review. It gave me the information I needed to know that I should probably skip this one. The battle frequency would likely make this game a slog for me. Neither here nor there, but the art is downright bizarre!
Seems facinating, the getting lost but sounds like dragon quest, tho the game looks like old school final fantasy... I'm intrigued enough to check out the switch version eventually lol
Glen i LOVE this game but i have to disagree with you on one HUGE part of the review.I play this game since PS1 and the depth of the game was never a problem, the real problem was the cheap presentation, the game always felt ''low badget''.When you buy a remaster there should be some standars and should not be rushed. No voice acting,no character Icons on chat bubles,on some backrounds its hard to see the correct way to move, some battle animations are ugly and most important NO TUTORIAL(this game is hard for the new players). Not sure if its worth the money this remake
I can see why some would dislike the presentation, in fact I think it was criticised for it back in the day. Perhaps it's the lack of pre rendered work these days that makes it look more appealing. You make some very fair points though for sure. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt This is one of my favorite games of all time,i was super excited for the Remaster, but after some research i was highly dissapointed. The game has an incredible amount of depth but the devs never ''let is shine''.Thanks for the responce
