Great info XLT's are the best very hard to beat as far as depth goes.I wore my first one totally out 15 years use.I liked it so much I set out to find another XLT to replace it which they don't make anymore.I did manage to find one almost new condition not a mark on it and a earlier model than my old one and the depth on my new one is unreal. My first real hunt in a old park with a 5 inch coil first good target signal it was 18k gold wedding band and the 2nd good signal was a another ring

Loved my XLT but moved up to the DFX and now the MX-Sport! I found my 1854 US One Dollar Gold Dollar Type I with it back in 2002! Great Detector! I use the Koss E-9000 Head phones! I also used the 950 coil, great setup! This is a wonderful detector!

Thanks for posting your video. It was very useful info. I set mine up this morning like you did and found a flying eagle cent 1857 at about 13 to 14 inches. I am so pumped. I had went over this site before, and I know I had missed it. Thanks again !!

A mate just gave me one of these so I just applied these settings to my custom 1 prog and in my well hit back yard found 4 1c pieces, a half penny and a penny (at 7 iinches)...I am impressed and off now to hit an area I have had over 150 silver coins from...will really put this thing to the test!! You're right though you do have to go pretty darn slow to hear and then feel the target out..many thnaks and perhaps soon my videos will show the whites finds and not the F2 :) HH

To finish the story I dug 3 gold rings and 6 nickels 5 quarters ,6 dimes and 6 pennies in 2 hours and a very old screw cap at 12 inches on a 5 inch coil and that is hard to beat..

Anybody remember the trick to get the XLT to play a little tune when you fired it up? I had one BITD and just bought a new one (like new) because I loved that machine and get frustrated with others.

I've found things at 12" before, it all depends on how long it's been in the ground, because the metal leaches into the soil and gives a better, bigger looking, target.

hi, its nice to have found your channel. ive been detecting with my whites for a year, but i dont often get out. I use preset coin program with a minor adjustment of turning the preamp gain up to 8-10 depending on the ground. what should i change next to improve the machine, i dont need extra depth as i find stuff 12-14" deep so more discrimination is what i would like. or should i jump straight to relic mode and use your settings?

My dad bought a brand, spankin' new one and the "Bullseye". He never even touched the thing. I found the batteries still in the box. I tried to understand the settings. I took it out a few times a couple years ago using the presets and all I found are what it is telling me are coins which are actually nails and scrap metal. But I most likely need to understand how it functions. Is this that great of a machine?

@@markfothebeast The Spectrum XLT is quite literally one of the finest vlf metal detectors ever made, period. When compared to the machines of today, in 2023, it will still outperform almost everything out there in quantity and quality of finds and in detection depth. Even outperforming most of the newest latest greatest multi-frequency machines. Keep in mind that this machine debuted in 1994. That's 29 years ago!!! It was so far ahead of its time, so advanced. VERY VERY complex to master because of the incredible amount of settings that could be adjusted. I speak from experience having purchased my XLT brand new in 1997, which I still proudly own by the way. It's a machine that you MUST devote lots of time to understanding every aspect of. Many books have been written specifically about just the XLT and if you truly want to get the most performance possible, buy them. I bought the books, scoured the web for every bit of info I could find (and in 1997 the world wide web was a brand spanking new technological advancement available for all of society to participate in, there was no such thing as google because it hadn't been created yet, ebay had just become a thing that very year, 56k dial up phone modems were the norm for accessing the internet and cellphone technology was still too expensive for most to afford), and talked on the phone, landline to landline, with metal detector shop owners seeking tips and advice to improve my understanding of this incredible machine. Also, I paid $1100.00 for my XLT in 1997 (which is $2056.00 in 2023 dollars). I bought it from Kellyco who had the best price I could find. That gives you an idea of how long Kellyco has been around. Do know that there are many many people in the world right now who have detected with an XLT but for one reason or another, no longer own one and would relish the chance to purchase that machine from you should you ever decide to sell it.

I asked about it in another videos comments and someone had told me that it's far inferior to todays machines. So thanks for this info. The interface and display aren't fancy but I'm glad it has some great capabilities.

@@markfothebeast Today's machines have advanced faster microprocessors which will provide a faster per target recovery speed. Today's machines utilize a coil technology that is more advanced. Some of today's machines offer bluetooth pairing for wireless headphones, yet another tech advancement. Today's machines are lighter in weight due to advances in construction materials. I won't deny those facts but from my viewpoint, they aren't enough to relegate the XLT into the old decrepit and useless detector category. Depending on who you ask will determine the answer you'll receive. The XLT held top dog status for many many many years. Hands down, irrefutable truth. White's released the DFX model in 2001, I think, which was the world's first TRUE simultaneous operating dual frequency detector which in all honesty outperformed the XLT. It was a newer technology. Then a few years later or so, White's released the V3i model which was a 3 frequency dominant coin detector, yet another breakthrough technology that revolutionized the detector world. None of the other detector manufacturers rose above these levels of engineering except for Tesoro who in their own right were producing some phenomenal detectors that were hot on gold, which was a different direction than White's which was more silver focused. White's went out of business (Garrett bought and now owns all their patents) and then so did Tesoro go out of business......each for different reasons, both sad stories. The long and short of it is this: the primary detector advancements from that point until now are simply that the other detector manufacturers were made privy to the White's engineering data and have incorporated such into their modern machines. They are just now catching up to where White's was. Nothing new, just a piggyback ride. If I were you, I'd consider both sides of the fence concerning the XLT. There is a steep learning curve and accessories are difficult to find. It's a heavy machine compared to today's offerings. Conversely, it can shamelessly run with any of today's big dogs and will regularly produce spectacular finds. It remains a high end detector at the end of the day. I'll share a secret with you. The best detectorists are the best because they excel in 2 areas: 1) By digging each and every target your machine identifies over and over and over and over until you are correctly interpreting every sound/signal the machine relays at which point you become one with your machine. 2) Developing and honing to a fine degree your research skills in locating a patch of ground with the highest probability of producing quality finds. Going out into a randomly selected patch of woods and hoping to find something good is a recipe for failure. The highest volume of people occupying a patch of ground over the longest continual stretch of time offer the best chances of success to a metal detectorist. Use your brain, read books written by detectorists about detecting. Go detect places where detectorists have already detected. If those who went before you deemed it worthy, it's still worthy because they didn't find it all, guaranteed. Seek out other detectorists. It's fun with likeminded people, you'll learn lots, and there's safety in numbers. You'll get better as you go. Takes time and patience and perseverance. Enjoy the hunt. If you're not enjoying it, consider another hobby. Embrace history and good luck! There's more to find out there than you could ever imagine. You'll find plenty if you stay after it. My last bit of advice is once you develop your third eye, that's when the fun begins!

10" to 14"!! Bet if you measured it would be at most 10". Some of the settings don't even exist..Moderation I assume is Modulation, AudioTrack is AutoTrack, sounds like you have too little understanding of the detector to be giving advice on how to set good programs.
