Love my Nox as recommended 3 years ago by everyone in the NYC crew and their honest reviews. Still going strong. Love it. Lot of new detectors on the market since then but you can trust Mr. Tones. Straight up no BS reviews.

I have the Nox900 and the AT Pro. True statement that the Pro sucks on salt water beaches... that's why I got the Nox900. However, with an aftermarket NEL Tornado coil, the Pro can match the depth of the Nox. In the end, choose what detector works for you depending on your soil conditions. If you need help choosing a detector, this community is always willing to help (although some personal bias might interfere with being totally objective). Great video, Lou.

I've been metal detecting since 1971 and seen a lot of changes in the industry. What never changes are these snake oil sales pitches. I like what you said when you said you should go to folks that are true metal detectorists and are out in the field testing and reviewing these machines. Thanks for a great video and I hope it helps new detectorist buy the right machine for their needs.

Well now, that Nox 800 with the 6" coil, Yep, they flood, and they also find a lot of gold rings. I traded in for the Deus2 with all three coils for $1000, I do miss Nox 800 and that little 6" coil really bad! It's great in junkie ground. But I will take the Deus any day! But I wish they would get with it and make a 6" coil....Waiting

For true waterproof was 1000$ and up pulse or excal. With some honest reviews todays newbies can get great tech to start with. Great video IT.

False advertising sells to ones who do not take time to research what they are buying. My first metal detector was the Tracker 4 and I found a lot of great stuff.. I then went to a Ace250 thinking it would work on the beach because it is advertised as a great beach detector, Boy was a disappointed. Went back to the TK4. I learned it is best to take the time and research the Metal Detector that you would like to swing. I own 12 metal detectors now. Why? Cause I fell into the false advertising .before I did my own researching.. Great info Buddy .. Peace

Ya, the amazon affiliate link has destroyed the idea of online reviews. I've had my AT Pro and AT Max underwater at lakes countless times, never a concern. Paid for themselves many times over. But it's pointless taking them near salt water, and they aren't price competitive anymore to buy new, can get better now for less. The Ace Apex is great in the wet at a salt water beach, happy to have it - but the target separation makes it painful to use in other places. Before spring, I'm going to sell my AT Pro and Ace Apex, pool in the clad I've collected over the past couple years so that it doesn't really cost me anything and will probably buy a Manticore. Save the AT Max as a backup. (unless I hear that people are having flooding problems with the manticore.)

Hello from Fryslan/the Netherlands, i've been following Merrill for years, now also this channel, i'm a detectorist for almost 30 years, when i'm approached by people i give non-biased info, it's about what they want, what they expect, and what's affordable to them. I tell them that i only payed for my first two detectors, later on the finds did😊. I mention that you need to dig a tremendous amount of trash to get there. I tell that i still own most of my detectors, upgrading when possible or because of new/ better tricks. They always ask how much gold i have found, my answer is always the same: "how much have you lost?" . Most important i tell them how much fun this hobby/addiction is, how healthy it is to be in the open, how much fun your first find can be, how relaxing (i have a terrible tinnitus), but most of all the fun part, i think this can not be mentioned enough. A final question: will you be rating the Nexus Merrill bought lately, i'd be very interested in the fine tuning this machine offers. So, greetings from Fryslan, Doede van Kammen .

I started with the cheapo Bounty Hunter years ago. It was fun and I did ok but it goes nuts near salt water. For years now I've enjoyed my Nox 800. It's so light & easy to learn. My warranty issues have been broken coil ears & a split charger cord (also several swap outs of the headphones, they're lousy). The warranty people at Minelab are so easy to work with, just send it in & in less than 10 days it's back to me. I love it & plan to buy another & retire the one I have in April when the warranty is up to keep as a backup. I don't submerge my Nox based on what I hear from others who do & flood their machines. This was a good video, will hit that subscribe button!

    • @digginggopher
      @digginggopher Рік тому +1

It's a great starter machine, or a low budget machine, if I was just getting into metal detecting today, I would get the simplex lite, I started with simplex plus and it was a great machine, but you had to buy the small coil separate, the lite is great because it comes stock with the small coil and you need to get the large coil separate, and the small coil is better for a lot of applications
The lite is NOT going to be too good at the salt water beach, in that case consider a legend/score/equinox/vanquish, something that is, or can use multi frequency

Probably the Minelab Goldmonster if your'e looking at new. A lot of older detectors still prove themselves. Maybe look at buying a good second hand machine and get some training! I can not stress how important training is. Another option or three is (a) hire a detector (b) join a club or (c) team up with some one who knows a little bit avout what you want to achieve.

I started out as a new detectorist 3 years ago. I’m on disability so my main issue was price. I didn’t have money but I had time to scour marketplace for deals. There are always deals on Bounty Hunters because people buy them, don’t have patience to detect and dump them. My first detector was a Bounty Hunter Tracker Pro. I think it’s a TK-4 guts with a digital display and the ability to be a bit more selective. I paid $35 like new condition. Unfortunately it acts erratically. Fortunately my background is in electronics and I found the issue was a loose ribbon cable inside. Fixed it and got my start there. I quickly needed a Pinpointer and went with a cheap Garrett Clone. No it’s not a Garrett Carrott but it got me started. I raided the garden shed for shovels and used an old hip bag for finds.
I then found a truly like new Bounty Hunter TK-4 in the box with headphones for $40. I watched videos from a BH Rep and learned to use it. Personally if you’re not beach detecting I think it’s the greatest entry level if you buy it used or on deep sale. It made me learn tones and I found enough to keep me wanting more. My next move was I found a used, like new in the box with headphones Garrett ACE 400 from a dealer for $168 delivered. This gave me ID numbers and better options to notch out items. I found my first General Services Button on my own land that I missed before.
I wasn’t ready to buy anything else but I fell into a like new but used Nokta Makro Simplex + in the box, all paperwork and another knock off Pinpointer. This has been my goto with the ACE 400 as my backup or to loan to a friend to detect with me. I also occasionally still use the TK-4 since it’s so darn simple. I forgot along the line I bought a Discoverer -1000 which is the Radio Shack labeled BH TK-4. I bought it in good working condition for $15. A Mom bought it for her kid and he quickly lost interest. I traded my original Bounty Hunter Tracker Pro towards a GoPro Black 7 so I can record my detecting.
Right now I’m considering selling the Ace 400 and maybe 1-2 Bounty Hunters or the Simplex and upgrade to a double or triple score or a used Legend so I detect on the couple of times I get to the beach. I do get to my local fresh water beach and the Simplex works fine there.
I’ll continue to follow your channel. Thanks for revealing these videos that don’t know what they talk about and are only in it for affiliate links. Dave in PA.

Hi i a beginner to detecting and the detector i have is a AT pro and i used it on the beach and it was ok on the dry but when it went to the wet it churped like a bird so i looked on UA-cam and saw Merrill's video's and sent him a message about the at pro and he explained why and what was happening, he then advised me to look for something more modern as the at pro is old tech , so i looked various machines and spoke to other detectorist and the im seriously thinking about is the nokta legend and after watching Merrill's video's on the legend they just steer me towards it but it is a bit pricey. My question is , would you agree with it as a good choice?

Hey Lou, just had a question for you. You have much more experience than I do so I thought you might be able to answer my question. I started out with the bounty Hunter TK4. Immediately upgraded to the vanquish 440. I hunt trashy parks 95%of the time so not being water proof is not a problem. However do you feel that the new Nokta DS separates that much better that it would be worth upgrading to. Thank you for your time😎

A bit off topic. I'm relatively new to MD have brought the Nox 900 as recommended by a local MD.
My issue is what length to adjust the shaft for me I'm 5.5 ft. I think I've got it too long. How far from your feet should I adjust too..
    Tia

    • @IndianaTones
      @IndianaTones  11 місяців тому +2

The optimal height for your metal detector shaft depends on your personal comfort and the specific model of metal detector you are using. However, there are some general guidelines you can follow to determine the appropriate height:
Adjust the shaft height so that you can comfortably grip the handle without having to bend over or stretch too much. This ensures that you can use the metal detector for an extended period without causing strain or discomfort.
Your elbow should be at a slight angle when holding the detector. This angle allows for better control and maneuverability. Adjust the shaft height to achieve a comfortable elbow angle while maintaining a relaxed grip on the handle.
The coil of the metal detector should be close enough to the ground for effective scanning. However, it shouldn't be so low that it constantly hits the ground or obstacles, as this can affect the detector's performance and cause unnecessary wear.
Consider your own height when adjusting the shaft. Taller individuals may need to extend the shaft to maintain a comfortable operating position, while shorter individuals may need to shorten it.
Check the user manual or guidelines provided by the manufacturer of your metal detector. Manufacturers often include recommendations on how to properly adjust the shaft for optimal performance.
If you frequently detect in rough or uneven terrain, you may need to adjust the shaft height based on the specific conditions to maintain balance and stability.
Experiment with different shaft heights to find the setting that works best for you. Take your metal detector to a test area and make adjustments until you find a comfortable and effective operating position.
Remember that personal comfort is key, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It's a good idea to spend some time adjusting the shaft height and testing different settings to find what works best for your individual preferences and detecting style.
Note: NEVER lean on your detector or use it to help you get up. It will break.

I guess if I had to describe the perfect metal detector it would be completely waterproof for some bottom searches, in the ability to work the shores and Fields with interchangeable batteries, ability to detect small gold, fast sweep, 2 feet down.
I figure I probably need a fully waterproof wand style for diving down in for honing in I don't know if the new ones have some kind of side capabilities.

I had to skip through 6 narrated video on metal detectors before I found your video. Listening to those narrated videos, you might as well go ask a Walmart employee in the shoe department for the best metal detectors. I'm still using my White's Eagle II that I bought brand new back in my late 20s. It's great, but heavy. Time to get something that can handle wet beach sand and lighter.

I am in Pompano Beach, and I have loved my Whites PI's for the beach - I think I have had 5 generations of them - down to three at the moment plus a homemade one - I also have a brand-new Dual-Field still in the box that was used once before the TDI Beach hunter came out - the Dual-Field can be chattery in the wet surf but the TDI requires a very strong scoop for the depth when using a 16.6v battery - there are a lot of different great detectors for our beach's -

As a multi- line metal detector dealer and author, I listened to your video and agree with most of what you said including your take on Amazon and these Affiliate Click Bait BS from Non Hobbiest folks who don’t know Shit because of suspicious questionable experience in our hobby putting out these misleading videos.
I also agree with your Mention of Gold Diggers Shop which on the Eastern Half of our Great Nation excels in Service and Knowledge where.most Amazon Dealers themselves never tou h a detector or their Inventory.
Where I disagree with you is what you didn’t say when talking about the Whites Mx Sport or MXT. Yes, they are single frequency and yes, you have to reduce the sensitivity down to stabilize the Circuit which makes hearing coins in salt water wet sand difficult beyond 5 inches. Multi Frequency circuits will cancel out that salt water Falsing but they can miss deeper coins and rings beyond 10” in certain high mineralized dirt or wet salt beach sand!
The American Tarsacci MDT 8000 a Single Selectable frequency detector actually detects 40 % deeper in 2024 because it operates on a PI / VLF Patented Circuit and to illustrate my point when comparing deep signals with My hunting partner Frank who uses The XP Deus II he was unable to hear and even ID these deep targets where it was a piece of cake for the MDT 8000. Frank has 40 plus years of experience Being taught as my customer as well as ALan Woods, Jimmy Sierra and a Reader of Andy Sabisch Books as well as an Engineer with HP and others during his career. So why has the Tarsacci MDT 8000 not been evaluated as much, and why does Ron from Gold Diggers not carry it? Well the Company based in Merced, Ca FairTrades his product and the Dealer Discount is 1/2 of normal discounts If you want to discuss Tarsacci further or have any questions for me. I will invite you to call me at Trans Bay. 650-574-2012. Just ask for Greg Moscini 😀👮‍♂️

Fast forward to todays choices, the simplex lite will hit coins at 12 inches deep for the same price you pay for a bounty hunter....go simplex or equinox, but steer clear bounty hunter

Hi Luisa. I haven’t reviewed many detectors under $200. To be honest. Most of them are similar. The one I did get I found silver with it. My suggestions is to make a test garden with different items to see how the detector IDs them and how it sounds. Also put iron nails close to some of the coins and rings you use to see if you can hear the difference. Your pinpointer on the machine can show how large an item is as you move it along. This will help you determine if you want to dig it or not. Be sure to ask questions on iratemetaldetectors.com also as some users may have the same inquiries or know the answers. We have a nice community of people wanting to help.
