    1. Decluttering by yourself
    2. Putting too much pressure on getting rid of things (even if you still use them)
    3. Putting minimalism into a box (have it from your own perspective)
    4. Not donating properly
    5. Decluttering as an excuse to buy more
    6. Doing it because it's trendy
    7. Not finding fulfillment beyond your items
    8. Being an overly proud minimalist

I've always had a box of things for the thrift store sitting in my closet - if I think I want to get rid of some clothes, I put them in the box, and if I don't reach for them in a few months, I know I'm ready to let them go :)

I lived in a 288 sq. ft. tiny house without running water for 2 years. It no longer worked for me so now I live in a small apartment in town. The things I learned from Mockingbird Landing (my tiny house) I hope to take with me everywhere I go. My minimalism looks like me, including my yarn art on the wall. I have overcome the pitfalls of wanting to "look" like a minimalist and truly just made a welcoming home for me and who ever comes over for coffee. I have anxiety disorders and sensory processing disorder so minimalist ideals are necessary and beneficial. Loved this video.

I love makeup as a hobby (which is how I found your channel when it used to be a beauty channel☺️). But I recently did a huge declutter & organized all of my makeup. I would by no means say that it’s a minimalist collection/ amount of makeup, but it did put into perspective how much I would like to keep my makeup this curated! I could easily see me moving on to other categories of items in my life like clothing, products, books, etc. and minimizing more clutter there as well!

I am not a minimalist by any means but I have gone through the process of learning to be more intentional about my purchases. I do slip up at times but I'm getting there. One day I'd like to own less makeup but for now I'm content with what I have and don't keep what I'm not using. This honestly arose out of necessity, having started a job that was paying 1/2 of my previous salary, but I'm happy it happened.
My thoughts surrounding intentional purchasing at this point is now surrounding environmental impact and its definitely a work in progress.

Lovely video sarah! I just have to point out, YMCAs and men's shelters (mens charities in general like prostate cancer vs breast cancer) get a lot less funding, donations, etc. than their female counterparts. For those of us who have male partners who want to donate their things, men's shelters would be absolutely delighted to hear that!

    • @uprisingsun9105

    Hi Sarah! Good video again!
I think of minimalism as a journey. So how can we compare other peoples journey to ours? We can’t and shouldn’t. Every person who is actively living a lifestyle that is constantly editing, reducing, replacing, and reusing is in a state of minimalism. It’s constant. It’s not stagnant. I think when you get it all perfect, life happens and your respond by editing, reducing, replacing and reusing. It never stops. I think a lot of people miss this concept. It’s not an achievable goal. It’s an achievable journey that continues till you die. Well, that’s my 2 cents worth!
    Blessings
    Danielle

I love this! I'm moving towards minimalism but I grew up in a maximalist house hold. This has made it a slow process for me because I'm having to alter my mindset. I have had to work to get over this fear of "what if I need it as soon as I get rid of it" but that isn't sustainable! I have been doing things slowly. Decluttering monthly while avoiding buying new things so I can figure out what I really use and love. Also, I dont completely get rid of things I know bring me joy. With my makeup, tea collection, and calligraphy set (these are three hobbies of mine) people say I need to get rid of ALL of it. But they bring me joy. I get rid of what I stop using but I keep those pieces I use constantly. Because it's about cutting down to what you need and what brings true joy and eliminating the unnecessary junk that clutters life.

The donating properly, is an important point for me for all sorts of reasons, but it helped me go from hoarding tendencies to decluttering with greater ease if I knew the stuff was going someplace really useful. So like, books I distribute into Little Free Libraries, I've given away tons of stuff in Freecycle/Buy Nothing/Nextdoor groups, clothes I have distributed to different places and things that are too far gone I take to fabric recycling bins, etc. I've been decluttering for years and almost nothing has gone to thrift stores!

I definitely enjoy having less and working towards simplicity. I noticed that every once in a while I go down a rabbit hole of just wanting to buy a whole lot of things I don’t really need. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I end up adding things to my wishlist or cart but don’t actually purchase it and after a few weeks or days I go back and see how I really feel about those items.

I love your video, I'm into minimalism since 2 years ago but my hubby and me collect Star Wars toys so, we buy consciously, save money and add from time to time new figures to our collection. It's something we always wanted since kids and we share the same passion. Everytime I cleaned them or just stare at them I feel really happy and as our apartment is small and plain, the collection stands out and everybody compliments it.

The hardest is not preaching to people how much minimizing has helped me and benefited my life. My mom is a straight up hoarder, and I catch myself preaching to her because she is buried alive. I let her know that I don't expect her to be a minimalist, but if you have too much to manage you need to edit out some of it. She agrees with me, but she is not ready to do anything about it. So I really struggle watching her struggle to manage her things.

I love this! As a wife and young mom, I struggle with knowing what sort of things to declutter versus what to save for the future (for when we own a home, or have more kiddos, or whatever). Slowly simplifying what I know how to has helped give me peace of mind and more time to focus on my son!

My husband and I just decluttered our entire house and man did we do almost all of these mistakes! We didn't take it one room at a time, we tried to go way too fast, and we started it right after having our second baby! Haha! What were we thinking! BUT now that it's all done. I feel amazing. My home feels more peaceful, my kids seem happier, I know where everything is! It's amazing. Something that helped me so much was in one of your other videos you said you didn't to the "spark joy" thing. You work off of if it's needed. That really resonated with me!

Watching this video made me realize that I may have donated one of my favorite shirts out of impulse without thinking about it. Today I was speaking to my friend on video chat and for a moment I almost said hey that T-shirt you have, I have one just like that! And immediately I remembered that I donated it to her in my One of my decluttering days and then after that I called I wonder for a little while why did I even give the tshirt away if I used it often... i’m sure I’ll get over it but it did make me realize when I was listening to this and to Ashlalyn that I need to be more mindful when I’m decluttering instead of decluttering for the purpose of just clearing and making things more neat. Thank you for the advice!

Hi, I’m new to the minimalist lifestyle. Not really there yet, but slowly working to de clutter my room of things I don’t use and forgotten items. I also noticed recently that I have several clothing items I actually wore on a semi normal basis that I didn’t feel comfortable in. So I started with my closet first. Probably going to go back through it another time. I have store containers of stuff (from when I last moved) in my closet that I will be working on de cluttering tonight. I used to think this was a weird concept, but honestly I think it is helping me actually value the things I decided to keep. Before it’s like they were just one item among the many others and it was overwhelming because I didn’t even know what I had. 🤦🏻‍♀️
    Thanks for your video(new subscriber)🙋🏻‍♀️💖

Currently living in a trailer so I don’t have much space to start with. That helps 😊. I love ‘negative space’ or empty space. Clutter creates anxiety. I’m about to replace a few wardrobe items that don’t fit me right anymore. So donating the items I don’t want and replace them with stuff that works with my current body shape. No extra space required!

It's great for my mental health, white, plants and serenity is really good for me. Visual clutter makes me anxious and overwhelmed. My life, the world is complicated, so demanding. I can't have that in my space. My only compulsion is plants. I love them, and i have more 30 in a one bedroom appartment.

I am 55 and started minimalism before I really knew minimalism was a thing after I went to an estate sale being run by the deceased's adult children....who were very obviously COMPLETELY overwhelmed by their parent's many many many collectibles and items. I was at the estate sale because I was NOT a minimalist...LOL...but I couldn't buy anything there...and when I walked away I determined to not do that to my four adult children. So originally, I started decluttering for them, not for me. I don't feel like that was a mistake, exactly, but once I started, I felt so free and it translated into other areas of my life...like my schedule....and I just love it. I am not nearly as minimalist (yet) as a lot of younger people, but I'm getting there! Your channel inspires me and keeps me from making some of the mistakes you mention because you are so balanced in your minimalism. So thank you for that!

I totally fall into the guilt side of Minimalism. If I do need to buy something I feel so guilty. I also feel guilty about the stuff I already have. I have been slowly decluttering for a couple years now and find myself saying “Do I really NEED that?” “Can I get by without it?” Even if I like/use the item. I feel like our brains never quit asking those questions when you are this far in. It gets exhausting trying to convince myself that I can keep something haha!

It wasnt until I found out about minimalism that things changed. I fell into the trap of believing I was unorganized. But really, we held onto WAAAAAY too much stuff.
I've reduced the amount of stuff in our home by around 60% in the last year and a half. I still have more to go, but its been amazing. I dont have the anxiety by looking at all the things I had to put away, and the constant overwhelm. Its been great!!

The not decluttering properly is so true. I tried to sell some business casual clothes online but didn't sell all of the items. I was about to thrift it but then decided to post it online for free. I ended up giving them to a person who works with veterans. So my old clothes might help a veteran a job or just make them feel better. Much more fulfilling than just sending them to the thrift store.

Your videos are so inspiring to me as a young mama! I love watching your videos and have been able to get creative with my small space. Contentment is a gift from the Lord and I feel like my home functions and is a place where the Spirit can dwell. Less chaos, more simplicity, less time tidying, more time to be present with my husband and babies ❤️❤️❤️

I love the idea of getting the entire family on board. I didn't know I was a minimalist until I heard the term in a videos about decluttering. you brought out a lot of great points. Thank you. I find the hardest thing is still, "how to get rid of things". What do you do with old clothes/shoes/fabrics that cant be repurposed? Or items that really are just broken/garbage? I feel so guilty throwing out old clothing that cant be fixed or items that I just know will end up in a landfill. I'm not saying this is a reason not to be a minimalist, because for sure, having less means getting rid of less (especially if you do aim for quality!) This is just my biggest struggle in decluttering and "getting there"

Everything will end up in a landfill eventually. This is the end of anything that’s manufactured. Get over the guilt by determining not to live buying excessive items. In the transition to a more mindful lifestyle you may be the last stop before the landfill. Sad, but true.

Minimalism is great and in a lot of ways I aspire to live a more minimal life style, but on the flip side I love collecting things and collecting things makes me happy. Don't know if these can be combined but I'm gonna try.

I love your minimalism videos, always make me inspired. I want to be more minimal. I've noticed I'm way more calm and at peace with less stuff around + it makes it easier and faster to clean. I the feeling I get after putting all of the kids's toys away! But for some reason I can't let go of many of the items I have. Not really sure why and how to go about decluttering. But I'm taking it little by little and hoping I'll be able to declutter better in the future, mainly for my sanity. Living with toddlers is no joke haha.

I definitely need the reminder about minimalism guilt! I'm an artist so I always feel like I can't be a minimalist because of all the art supplies I own. But I actually use them! The only reason I have things I'm not using is because I have no space (because I have too much stuff). But I think it's okay if I try to be more minimalist in other aspects of my life so that my space inspires my art instead of making it harder.

Sarah, I've gotta say. You're a really powerful, strong-willed, and challenging woman! I find myself in a similar position to you, with 2 girls, 25 years old, and a devout Christian with a heart for adoption. But you're soooo strong-minded and it almost scares me sometimes! Thank you for being unapologetically you, but choosing to be honest when you think you've made a mistake. I learn often from you. Blessings all the way from Arkansas.

For me personally I have a real hard time tossing items evan if thet are broken. But man the kick I get out of repairing!!🔨✂️🧵
I think it is so important also from a mum point of view to have som "repaired" items in my home for my children to be a part of everyday life, not only the "perfect" is in use but also that it is possible to repair and give back value in to something that once lost it. It is not sustainable to let the price tag define the worth of something. There is a much higher price in buying new witch we often forget. The ecological or social economical price that some one have paid for ALL items that are made. talking about not always giving our "overflow" but also challenging ourselves to live with what we have until it is no more.
I have sure learnt from the generations before me by their example. I know my grandmother have a pot at her place witch she have probably glued together at least three times, you can see the different shades of the glue from different repairs. And it hit me, I rarely see this any were els but at her place. How amazing and charming that is!
thank you Sarah for a whole lot of great inputs on the subject! 👌

I've been decluttering with the focus on simplicity and being more minimal, though I would not call myself a minimalist. It has been so helpful! I can focus on what I actually enjoy now!
My parents are downsizing 2 or 3 houses down into 1 (inherented 2 sets of grandparents houses plus all their stuff) by the end of the year. My older brother has been tackling the house they live in (split level, he and his family live with them) and I've been helping them downsize my mom's parents farm house, where they're retiring at the end of the year. Thankfully I've been building muscles and learning all the things so it's been a really enjoyable process!

I didn't mean to be a 'minimalist' - I just moved heaps of times within a few years and got so sick of the packing process wanted to make it easier on myself. I also like to reuse and upcycle things being creative (make a cracked gumboot into a plant pot etc). I need to get better at purchasing the right merchandise for me, I try to get quality items but sometimes ruin them with a stain or something.. or I buy something I think is great but turns out it doesn't suit me. Hair looks great Sairh :D

Intentional purchasing is difficult! I try to pay close attention to why I didn’t like a particular item when decluttering so I don’t make the same purchase mistake in the future. I’ve found that my shopping rules actually make it really difficult to buy certain items because retail is highly dependent on a high profit margin.

    Hey Sarah!
I'm a long time fan of yours and I just had to ask you for words of wisdom!
I have probably over 150 pieces of clothes, if not 200 and honestly this is the least amount of clothes I've ever had in my life. I have an abundance of stuff that I don't touch or use. I hold onto everything because if what I was a child we couldn't afford a lot and we never bought new things. I always got thrift clothes and hand-me-downs, which there is nothing wrong with that, I just knew if I had it I should keep it because I wasn't going to get anything new for awhile.
I recently got engaged and I have to start packing up my stuff soon to move out. with all of my things and clothes. I don't want to burden my fiancé with all of my things and clothes when we move in together. I feel like it's all so overwhelming and I don't know where to begin or what to do.
I was just wondering if you had any inspiration for letting things go to help me feel okay about giving things up.
Thank you so much for your time if you see this!

    • @spring7643
      @spring7643 4 роки тому +1

Take out the clothes one by one and try on everything in a mirror.
      Declutter:
      • the clothes that you would never picture yourself wearing to any place under any circumstances
      • the clothes that don't fit, unless you love them
      • the clothes that look unflattering regardless of weight loss/gain, they just aren't flattering
      • anything that is itchy/uncomfortable/hard to wash
Just don't get rid of something you love. Start easy and get rid of the clothes you don't care about first. Then slowly get rid of more. You can still have many clothes there's no need for a capsule wardrobe unless that is all the closet space you have. Having some extra backup clothes is good for a few reasons:
      • if you do a messy project like painting, intense exercise, etc.
      • the more clothes get worn/washed the more they start to fall apart a little bit even with gentle washing. People with capsule wardrobes notice this drawback, if you only own clothes you love you will make them threadbare faster. This sucks if they are expensive too. My personal opinion is that your nicest clothes should be worn sometimes but not too often.
      • if you live somewhere without a washer/dryer in the future, having less clothes means more trips to the laundromat which is a waste of time.

I think that it can be difficult not to exalt yourself thought minimalism and this was a good reminder to put that in check. I personally struggle since I value minimalism from a sustainability standpoint, and as such I find it hard to stomach how much consumerism contributes to the destruction of our planet. It can be hard not to get a little high and mighty when coming from that perspective.

I absolutely love what you do. Your values and just completely all of it. I was an overspending person.. buy things on sale even though I don't really need it.
But after watching your minimal lifestyle it inspired me. So did Ashlynne. I have subscribed to her channel as well. And it's amazing to see you both share your content that is so beneficial to others.
Last week I just donated and gifted a box that I carried with me for years that had just a lot of goods and extra items. And it was amazing.
Sending another one this week as well.
You are an inspiration and even my husband asks me if I'm watching "the inspiration UA-cam channel" 😀
One thing about being minimal is that it takes time and effort.. it can't be done in a day or two. I take time now to think if I really need it. Does it spark joy in me. Is it useful to someone else. It's a whole process..
