Great podcast. Strawberry memories. I was at Shea in 1985 when Darryl hit a grand slam in the 1st inning. The next run that the Mets scored was in the 18th inning to beat the Pirates 5-4. That was the game where they has to put Rusty Staub in the OF. They were switching him between LF & RF depending on if the batter was L or R. I'm not sure if it was the same game that Darryl hit a home run into the hat.
The Jorge Lopez misquoting is the reason why first language Spanish speaking players tend to conduct their post-game interviewers via an interpreter. I am a Rays fan and quite a few of their players such as Yandy Diaz, Randy Arozarena, Isaac Paredes & Jose Siri when they give their interviews with the great Tricia Whitaker do it via interpreter.
The Mets said that he was offered to have an interpreter present, but supposedly he declined. Unfortunate situation. But he literally did say “teammate;” he did not say “team.” It just sounds like he said team due to his ESL and accent/annunciation challenges. Disappointing so many in media erroneously reported that he called Mets the worst team.
This was time well spent, an excellent listen. Aside from the excellent baseball acumen exhibited by the hosts the chemistry between Ashley and Samantha is outstanding. The cohesion and interraction are flawless. You collectively are seamless as far as exchange of opinion and fair in critique. At this point crunching the numbers, which is part of baseball, I get it, is redundant. The problems with this group have been obvious for the better part of the last three seasons. A change in ownership and the revolving doors of GM's and managers has not made a difference but has added to the ineptitude in the organization left in the wake of Bernie Madoff. The core currently in Flushing are not winning players, individually talented but lacking the chemistry on and off the field to win. Stearns has'nt had time to furnish his office yet, the fan base must except that an organizational reset is in order, much more complex than a standard rebuild. This is year one of David Stearns leadership, he needs time, and probably more than a few years to fix this mess. And fans, we can't blame Carlos Mendoza! I bet Buck is glad that he was the sacrificial lamb in this organization and quite frankly, we would'nt be much better if he was in the dugout. The pain of being a Met fan, my fandom dates back to the ownership of Lorinda deRoulet and M. Donald Grant which, hard to believe was worse.
I was born in 1962 and have been a Mets fan since 1971. My favorite players were Ken Singleton, Jon Matlack, Tug McGraw(Tim McGraw's dad - married to Faith Hill) and Seaver. My first World Series that I remember was 1973 vs. Oakland. Willie Mays was on the team and Yogi Berra was the manager. The Mets beat the mighty Cincinnati Reds(The Big Red Machine) that post-season. It was a wild series where Bud Harrelson(a great Mets SS) got into a massive fist fight with Pete Rose at 2B when Rose came in hard and Harrelson took exception. The Mets then went on to face Oakland, who were also a powerhouse with some of the following stars: Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers and more(at least 3 Hall of Famers). The A's owner fired his second baseman during the World Series because he made a couple of errors. The MLB commissioner, Bowie Kuhn overruled the A's owner(Charlie O. Finley) and stopped the firing during the series. A massive mistake was made against the Mets where the tag of Harrelson at the plate was never made. It was obvious on replay, but there were no challenges back then. Willie Mays was on deck and dropped to his knees when he saw the bad call. You can see the photo here (www.mccoveychronicles.com/2022/8/30/23329319/willie-mays-san-francisco-giants-new-york-mets-world-series-number-retirement). The Mets lost in 7 games.
UA-cam lead me to this episode. I am happy to see that we now have a ladies Mets podcast. Subscribing and looking forward to more. No Lindor should not be named captain. You have to consider everything going on with this team the last few years has been with him leading the way, in some form or fashion (with the older core guys) and there has never been anything consistent of us seeing a team that plays for each other each and every day. They do have their moments but Lindor, like Pete and like Jeff are about me first. Great guys don't make great leaders. Guys like maybe Bader or JD are better suited, I think. And we have Avly coming back very soon and IMO he is the one that should be named captain once these guys get out of his way. :) Don't be hard on Pete, he doesn't do well with the mounting pressure, he will level off when or if he ever stops worrying about the price tag of his contract.
Best mets podcast by far, for me the second best baseball podcast! only after Abriendo El Podcast (because the interview Venezuelans :) Came to the Mets for Mendoza and stayed for this podcast
My father and uncle saw Staw hit a pinch-hit homer over the scoreboard at Shea. I guess he was sick and did not start. I still have that score book from the game. I was too small to go (father said I was anyway).
gmarullo I stumbled over you guys but would like to say it is great to see two young woman (I'm 75 and longtime mets fan so everyone is young to me) so versed in Mets info. I agree wholeheartedly that the Mets do have a attitude problem with some of their so called core players. I have subscribed and look forward to your observations on our favorite team no matter how painful that can be. Like my daughters and grand daughters always tell me "you go girls".
Great pod. Subscribed. Digging into the real issue: the clubhouse. Alonso and McNeil are like wet blankets when they’re not playing well - They bring everyone down with them. Not good energy when the young players come up and look up to them.
Glad to hear you young ladies ; takes great passion and strength to love your team , baseball welcomes your voice . Hoping for a subway World Series . Could 2000 repeat itself !
100% Dodgers Fan….I’m not sure why UA-cam recommended this but I love baseball and talking baseball….I listened to the entire episode about the unwatchable Mets only because listening to both of you was fun and interesting! Nice work!!
Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter were neither home grown and made excellent co captains. I totally appreciate what you ladies bring to the table. Alonso has an agent problem seems like another Conforto issue. He may be rethinking the 155 Million extension offer he was suggested to turn down. The Mets will be alright, it’s just not now.
@@WhyMetsPodDo you still believe this Mets team has both an identity crisis/issue, as well as a culture problem? Or, is it plausible that baseball reasons were the primary driver of both the team’s significant struggles and also hot streak/winning? I.e. winning makes any team and clubhouse seem great; whereas losing makes everything seem worse than it is, and it’s all too easy to see a team that’s losing and feel the need to search for deeper, underlying issues when perhaps it’s as simple as the team just isn’t playing good baseball at times. Thoughts?
with acuna and jett both playing second base and some center Mauricio is the Mets future 3rd basement. hope they give Baty time in left. If Alonso goes Vientos would be moved to first. Mauricio, Jett, and acuna give Mets speed that they really need.
Ha-to find themselves!!! Yes, Lindor-Captain. Calls the team meeting, no one else wants to or cares enough to. 10yr contract, build the team around him including Vientos, Nimmo-etc.
Cooking with gas. Many years ago, only the wealthiest houses could afford gas stove and to have a gas line linked to their house. It was a big step up if you were “cooking with gas“. You can see it in your history books. I am enjoying your podcast and have subscribed. Please excuse my old fogie comments. You go girls!😊
The Mets need to reestablish a new core by strengthening the present core. By bringing the house to its foundation, its envelope. Then rebuilding with quality players with contact and speed and reliable arms.
Pham's comments were directed at LINDOR!! He implied that Lindor was more concerned with bringing his toddler daughter to the clubhouse over working in the cage. Pham was also not a fan of the continuous pool table and ping-pong games being played. Vogelbach spent more time playing pool than even eating!
I sat on my Dad's lap in the late 70's watching the Mets. King Kong Kingman followed by kieth, Rusty, Straw, Doc and the Kid. Wright and Piazza. This team doesn't have many loveable players. Low energy. I pray for .500
I don’t see a staple Captain on the team and that could be part of the problem. Lindor is taking the face of the franchise, but not a true leader. The hard part is none of the current guys are leaders, which means there aren’t gonna be any homers to lead. This means having to bring someone in next year that could take in the role, but again this player will be an outsider to start so it might take a while to find a true C.
As a Yankee fan , you are a welcome surprise . The Mets need a winning streak ; unfortunately they do not have the make up ; but you young ladies rock ! Great to hear a different opinion , well come to the world of talk radio ….keep it up !
I find it interesting that Lindor called a players only team meeting with Alonso in the hospital. It reeks of a power grab.

Alonso not saying something is telling you everything, she should be behind his team mate supporting him, instead he votes blank, that is a recognition that there was a wrong doing. Is the right thing to do, if Alonso does not defend him at least does not push him down even further because that wouldn't really help the team.
If Jorge would have just thrown the glove in the stands, he most likely would have gotten just a fine. Players have done that before in the past. His comments is what got him kicked off the team. You can't say what he said on air.....especially when the reporters asked him several times, and he seemed to double down on what he said. It was the next day when he tried to back track what he said.
First of all, love your podcast. Nice work, ladies :) Question, though: Do you still believe this team/organization has an underlying culture problem? Or, perhaps, is it possible that Occam’s razor is at play in that losing breeds feelings of negativity and winning is the deodorant of winners, masking virtually any and all otherwise would-be “issues” with a team?
I still have plenty of hope for Baty. His defensive improvement was a pleasant surprise and I believe he can be a serviceable major league hitter. His exit velocity is nice, it's his barrel rate that needs improvement. LFGM!!!
Alonso only wants accolades. When he is not hitting, he actually whines. I was shocked every time I heard it. He is really about himself, but tries to say the right things that he believes fans want to hear he does not say sincerely supportive statements regarding other players. Definitely not a leader.
@@jamesbuckley8917 Not really, he's gonna sign with the highest bidder and who has more money than Cohen?? Tidwell, Scott and Sproat are 3 excellent starting pitchers that are there and getting close.
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the trade deadline for the Mets, sellers more likely at this point? But who ?
We will touch on this next week!
The Mets need to reestablish a new core by strengthening the present core. By bringing the house to its foundation, its envelope. Then rebuilding with quality players with contact and speed and reliable arms.
When should the Mets attempt to do this? Should they begin disassembling the core this trade deadline?
Pham's comments were directed at LINDOR!! He implied that Lindor was more concerned with bringing his toddler daughter to the clubhouse over working in the cage. Pham was also not a fan of the continuous pool table and ping-pong games being played. Vogelbach spent more time playing pool than even eating!
Bull pen help for the Mets: Lucchesi, Butto, Jay, and Sulser are better than many of the current pen in the big league team.
You should become a Mariners fan. We are used to doing nothing for a while.

Organizations can’t have their players throwing things into stand. It’s a huge liability so they had to crack down.

PA was basically the only person to directly defend and support Lopez
