My friend chased down her birth mother after years of searching. It was a big disappointment and I feel sorry that she believed that it would the missing puzzle piece that would grant her peace and happiness.

Yes but biological parents are important so children can know where they come from and genetics i.e. health history! Step and adoptive parents are important but sometimes biological is just as important and people should not allow their personal feelings to get in the way of children, if they are at an appropriate age to search.

In no way was I saying people don't have the right to know who their birth parents are. I just think it is a slap in the face to the person that actually put love, energy, and resources in to nurturing a child. They are the REAL parent.
Two years ago today, I found out I have a full sibling that my parents gave up for adoption 5 years before they had me. They were broken up when they had my sibling, and thought they were getting a divorce, so they gave up my sibling for adoption. The sibling reached out to me two years ago, and once I looked at the sibling’s profile, I learned I had a sibling. I asked my mom, and she told me the truth. I was raised believing I was an only child. But I was not. My sibling’s adopted parents live in the same neighborhood as my/our grand parents.

Well are you worried that your grandparents knew all along who & where she was & didn't tell you or what? People make poor choices like your parents did by giving up a child because we thought we were going to break up? That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe she was born before they got married & they were still very young & the grandparents thought it best if they were breaking up for them to give thier baby up to a married couple who couldn't have children. Which used to happen a lot back then and less often today.
Be happy you've found each other & can now have each other for the rest of your lives as sister's.

A FATHER is the man that raised you. Anyone can be a donor, but your connection with a mother or father that raised you, is all that matters. Yes, it's great to know who you are...I just wish that there was more transparency with the children.

It happens more times than you want to know. My mother had childhood friends who found out they were bro and sis after they were married. It did not end well.

After reading obituaries I found out my cousins came from the same family. They married and have grandchildren. I haven’t told them. My nephew and his wife were already related, they have three children. Now he wants to know who his grandparents were. He knew my father, he was in his hospital room when he died. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Although this video is a few years old, I have to say that I recently, at 50yrs old took the Ancestry DNA test and discovered that my dad was not my biological father and that I have an entire family that I didn't know. Siblings to great-great nieces and nephews. But it did let me understand why my mother hated me all my life till the day she died last September.

I’m scared to do a dna test because I know my daddy was a HO! He fully believed in the “be fruitful and multiply” growing up he told us (3fullsiblings) that we had a few half siblings out there and we have met 2 so far. The only reason I want to know for sure is for my kids. I don’t want them accidentally getting into a relationship with a relative. That freaks me out!
I feel you. I didn't have any intentions of doing one either until one morning this past January when I opened an e-mail I would normally have deleted without opening. I am more happy in more ways than I can say that I did. It was from a child that I did not know I had. He was adopted in another country not long after being born after my last tour overseas forty something years ago. He had found that he is predisposed to a condition that runs in my family and was wondering if he had passed it on to his child. Well, according to my wife, closest friends and family members he looks like me except for the his nose, hair and eyes which I am sure came from his birth mother. Yes, we are in touch and the DNA test confirmed he is my child. And no, I was not aware I had impregnated anyone. He is no doubt the result of a one night stand I had. Now I have been wondering if there are any others out there. I've also noticed some of my personality traits in him which is a bit weird or scary.

I found an old man in Kansas with my dad’s exact name. He and his son look just like my late dad, who was from NY State, lived in DC. I never contacted them.
you should do your test so you do not accidentally have a kid with a sibling or other relative. you might not care but the child might. also, medical is important.
When people do things like this, they should have to register the donor and the recipient and the children should be told at the age of 18 so when they become sexually active they can make sure they are not sleeping with a brother or sister
We do have registries. So that's already an option. Not mandatory, but optional.

@@anastasia10017 Get DNA tested when it gets serious. This way you avoid the time, energy and expense of a wedding. Get shocked in private instead of in front of your friends and family.

@@anastasia10017 and what if the person(s) who knows your secret is dead? There's no denying with DNA testing. Just another layer of protection if you want it.
The most danger in all of this is you could end up marrying one of your 1/2 siblings, and giving birth to a child with health issues. This science area needs more stringent regulations.
Well you have many in Appalachia and other regions and religious sect and island nations as well as European and other ethnicity that practice in breeding.

As a doner conceived person with 12 other unknown siblings who ive been unable to track down for years, this is a real issue. The only doner sibling of mine that I found lives only an hour from where I live. The possibility of incest is definitely high.

For sure. I remember some 10 or 15 years ago and one of the daytime talk shows a couple was interviewed and through DNA research they learned that they weren’t actually husband and wife even though they were married but instead they were brother and sister. They did not have children. But can you imagine if they had? Let alone finding out you marry your sibling. Unimaginable.
It's all about perspective. It can be negative or positive. Positive is a better option. A lot of people want to identify themselves by outward connections, peers, family, friends, religion, money, careers, material possessions. It's about inward solid foundation in the person you are. So you have to know you on a personal level. What do YOU value? What are YOUR morals? What is YOUR character? What do YOU want out of life? What are YOUR likes and dislikes? What are YOUR boundaries? Basically what makes YOU tick? Once you have a solid sense of self, then nothing that comes along will make you question you. Outside sources may have made you physically but inwardly you get to decide.

We always got taught this in church while growing up - start deciding what your morals and values are now, so that when you need to make important life decisions, you'll make choices that will make your life better than if you had not chosen what kind of person you want to be!

Feelings of gratitude is common in family search work. I believe it is the natural result of learning to love strangers, i.e. family.
I love how this sister and brother had such a great Dad! Of course he wasn't perfect, buy you can tell that he loved them and was so involved in their lives. As a mom with both adopted and biological children I can put their minds at ease about their Dad and what he might have been thinking. I bet he was like me. I completely forget that my daughter is adopted, and that is even though she is a very different race! My husband and I love her just as much as our other children!

as some one who works in TV. im thinking due to the placement of the screen in the back and the guest they need a bigger couch!!!!!!!! obviously to me they had to sit that close to keep the shot with the screen and all the people on the couch

They most likely went over it all before the show..you know the camera your suppose to look into and everything. they also had the screen in the back. they were doing the most with that set and thats why they had to sit stiff like that. and the audience. It was alot going on. They should get individual chairs instead of that couch. easier to control.

This makes me sad! We adopted our 5th child from foster care. He needed a family and we wanted another child. We only see him as our child. We don’t look at him any different than our other biological children. I am his mother and my husband is his father! Blood only matters if you let it. Of course there are medical things they need to know, but their parents that raises them only looked at them as their own children! They should not lessen the gift of love, life, sacrifice and parenting they gave them!
so true, I totally agree with you, but it is complex matter, the environment has everything to do with how the child we grows up and with such a loving family home I am certain it will grow up to be the best version of it´self.. there is something called Epigenetics. which is super powerful that can affect how children respond to their emotions. I would recommend to look into it. we also have muscle memory and we inherit information mating back to all our ancestors through mothers side! so a child has a right to know and understand where they come from as well! best wishes
I have a similar situation both my parents have past .my father wasn't a loving father he would make fun of me .hit me. My mother would treat me special she always told me she loved me. My father never so after they died. I found some paper work and it was court papers .when I read it I got chills they were separated. When I was conceived. So I have 5 sisters 1 sister pastin2008 .2015 who I thought was my dad past . Than my oldest sister past.2015 than my mom. 2015.than my 2 oldest sister. 2016 pasted in January. About 3 year's before my 4 sister got her dna done on ancestory .so me and my 5 sister decided to do the same. .me and my 4 th sister don't get along. She called the sister I did the test with laughing saying I'm just a half sibling .so I don't know who my father is. No one to ask. Don't have a name to find him don't know how.

This is true in some cases, but many foster care kids don't go on to live a happy ever after. And even then many foster kids aren't told about "oh you were adopted" and lead on to believe what isn't true. Or they aren't given their own records when asked to maybe reach out to bio-parents and see why they were put up the system which may have a sad way or a good way. I know of such a case where they were never told even when asked (as they suspected it, not out of love, as they were loved all their life) when they were suspected to be adopted from the system at a very young age. They were just told they were their parents, and that was it. So when they grew up and moved out, they did a DNA test to find their own answers that their adopted parents wouldn't tell them.

Just think of how dangerous this is, to have siblings and not knoing they are your siblings and finding out that you have fallen in love with your brother or sister.
It seems most people who were brought up by parents who were not their biological parents, were brought up with amazing love and care. Both my parents were my biological parents. For some reason I, to this day, cannot fathom, is why my mother hated me all the 21 years that we lived under the same roof. I realised there was something wrong at around age 7, and as the years passed, I became distant (and very bitter) toward her and the rest of my family. Now that I am much older, I have become a born again christian, I have dropped my bitterness toward others, but I do prefer to mingle with people other than my biological family.
Artifical insemination doesn't seem like a good thing to do. So the mother gets her life long dream of a child but the child gets stuck with 100 siblings. I wouldn't want any parts of that. The siblings I was raised with would be my siblings and all those donor kids would be DNA friends. People are forgetting about relationships in all of this.
And the possibility of unintentional incest. Seems like mom at least should have told these kids before they became sexually active so they don’t accidentally produce an extra from Deliverance.
Yep. They seem to imply that if you find an unknown sibling or other relative, you will experience an instant bond or some kind of thrill or appreciation. In reality, many people can't even get along with the family members they've known all their lives!

People are very selfish. They want their “own” children. Adoption has its flaws, but a home with loving parents is better than no home at all.
With the way that men travel and have multiple relationships in multiple towns, many people are likely to have dozens of half-siblings.
Laws like the new crazy ones in Texas will make this even worse, as they are designed to profit the Adoption Industry.

Really DNA ancestry is a gift of this century I v tested with 5 different companies trying to know my roots,though it is easy for Africans as it is for Europeans,there was a surprise I never expected a 1st degree cousin who never would have known about her biological father without me testing

These DNA test are revealing so many lies from parents
Well you can focus on the lies or you can focus on the fact those parents who did not tell them their origin loved their kids and believed it was in their best interest not to tell them more. And you can focus on the fact that all these kids know how much they were wanted and that is a hugely important thing. I have 11 siblings and was told the truth repeatedly growing up - that we were unwanted burdens and accidents. That devastated me. I would prefer to have been lied to and told we were wanted and instead, the truth caused me lifelong hurt.
Imagine yourself at the crossroads of the two decisions back then - when there were no DNA tests and no chance little people, who might be terrified to learn their daddy was not their ‘real’ daddy, would discover they were ‘different’. Then think of which decision you would make.
The truth here is also that what they discovered as adults meant that they could process the fact a parent was not their biological one, with an adult’s ability to rationalize that they were hugely wanted by parents who truly loved them.
There are always two sides to any truth.
And srystr77 you, like every single other person (and this is a normal researched, proven reality about what humans do, even through lies of omission) would have told many lies yourself in life. They are lies still if only small ones that you tell to avoid hurting others. For example, if the truth was you couldn’t attend a birthday party because you totally loathed someone’s brother, but telling the truth might upset your friend - wouldn’t it be kinder not to hurt them with a truth that could even spoil that birthday? If you had a obese child would you constantly tell them they were fat or the mother of one of their friends at school had said unkind things about them?
Not all lies are bad and not all lies lead to disastrous results. There are moral reasons and good motivations behind many of them.
daniela santiago No no no! I’m sorry but lies most of the time hurt people. Also, you cannot compare being lied to about your origins to a birthday party. Parents/mom’s that hold to these lies are selfish and not thinking of the children...the people they are creating.
This situation of a donor may be a bit different depending on the individual. However, many of these DNA shockers are due to affairs and that’s not okay. And what if the non-bio father was horrible, abusive,etc? What if you never find out who your REAL dad was...not even a name because your mom won’t fess up? What if the fake dad had no family and you grew never knowing you even had a relative on your dad’s side?
What I’m saying is if you haven’t gone through this type of thing if you’d still thinking is so understandable.
@@BonnieCreoleSpirit I mean, the truth is almost always the wisest, best option in most circumstances, so you're not wrong. People do have messed up families trees more than they realize. And not sure why you singled moms out, dads do it all the more often, creating kids they don't bother with at all, and never acknowledge or tell anyone about. That aside, it's wrong to lie to kids about who their parents are, I truly think so. Even with a donor sperm or egg, I think it's wise to just tell kids at their level and make it matter-of-fact. Even so, I also think holding onto anger and lashing out over lies told won't help anyone either.

There exists no human races in nature; they were brought into existence by imperial conquest. There exists no sets of genes which one population group has which is exclusive to all of human beings on earth. None exists. Also, the continent of Africa contains the most genetic diversity than all other continents combined.

I took a test for fun. My dad was such a tramp that my siblings and I always said that we probably have other siblings out there. There's 7 of us by 6 different women. But we all grew up together. My two sisters have the same mom and she raised all of us mostly on her own after she and our dad divorced. Except my youngest one. He's her cousin's kid lol. It took my mom about 15 years before she got over that betrayal. Well, it turns out that I'm not his biological child. It has pretty much devastated me. I had a very complicated relationship with my dad. He and my biological mother lost custody of me to the state for abuse as an infant. His mother adopted me and raised me until I was 8 when she died from cancer. I then chose to live with my dad and stepmother who is my mom, I don't call her a stepmother. My dad struggled with heroin addiction for most of his adult life and he was abusive. But other times he was amazing. The most loving dad, and the life of the party. He was very handsome, a sharp dresser, and always smelled so good. Anyhow, it took a long time for me to learn to forgive him. But I've always been a daddy's girl. I used to think that maybe my dad was so mean because he hated my biological mom cause he would often tell me how much he really loved her and maybe he had some hurt there. She was murdered when I was 10. But now I wonder if it was because the older I got the more he suspected deep down inside that I wasn't his. My 2 older brothers mother's were Black, the other 5 of us were by white mothers, so we represent every shade of the rainbow. The two that have the same mom barely resemble one another. But I am so light that my oldest brother says that mom and dad made me with the lights on, I have a blondish reddish hair color, and I burn in the sun. So I would always joke around and say that I didn't know who my daddy was and he would always come back and say that he wondered who my daddy was too but he had a blood test and I was definitely his. My youngest sister and I look just alike, and my son is my brothers twin, so I had no reason to doubt him. Besides, my dad hardly took care of us, he was not about to play stepdaddy to someone else's. So my whole family was shocked. My dad was there when I was born, he signed my birth certificate, and he and my mother married when I was 2. He never told anyone that I can find that he suspected that I wasn't his. He died in 2014 and I'm glad that he never knew because he did love me the best way he knew how. I never doubted that. But it has left me feeling lost. I thought that I had 6 siblings but I'm not biologically related to any of them. I didn't know my biological mom well enough to remember her but I do know that I was her only child. She was also an addict, and a prostitute. My biological father could be anyone. I have tested through 4 different DNA companies and have no close matches except two people who aren't related to one another and are either half uncles or first cousins and neither of them have ever responded to my requests for information. I wish I had never taken the test because it has left me feeling lost and alone although my family refuses to believe the test. My siblings were probably more devastated than I was initially, and we have become even closer. They've been my siblings for 44 years, and that's not going to change now. I've always heard these stories, but never imagined that it would be mine too. And it costs too much money to hire a professional to figure it out for me. I have a family, I'm not looking to replace them. I loved my daddy's dirty drawls. No one can take his place. I just want to know my biological father's name and see a photo. That's all. But I would love to have a relationship with any siblings that I may have. Sorry to write a book for anyone who has read all of this. I think that with the emergence of at home DNA testing it is important for parents (mothers) to be honest with their kids about the identities of their fathers when they are old enough to understand. At the very least they could leave the information with their important paperwork to be seen upon their death. Because it isn't fair.

Sometimes people with addiction issues such as your mother find it difficult to be fully honest because they are so often trying to avoid pain, shame, and some of the consequences of what they are doing.
Many families who know their heritage don't get on and rarely see each other except at funerals when they hope to be included in the Will.
Others reject their Family of Origin and make a new family where they feel loved and accepted.
You sound like a very unique and special person, and were your mother still to be alive, she would feel as I do, so proud of a young woman who thinks deeply, is very curious, and who does not judge.

@@ParArdua thank you. I honestly believe that my mom didn't have a clue that I wasn't my dad's, and my dad always said he had a blood test with me. The problem with that was in the early 70s when I was born the blood tests only matched blood types and my dad and I are both A positive. Along with half of the population lol.

In January 2022 I found out that I have a son I didn't know about for 41 years. You should see what I have written him this these past months. I started a blog and have put some of my letters on it plus other stuff mainly directed to him. He was the result of a one-night stand on my second tour overseas. Although I was still in country 4 months after our encounter I was never told. Unfortunately my parents are alive to find out about him and I know my mother and sister would have spoiled him. Oh, my grandchild will be 2 in August.
I was going through my email one Saturday morning deleting the junk and saw one with the subject of "Information." I normally would have deleted it without opening it but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a job offer I'd have to write back letting them know that I am medically retired. I was retired in 2018 and still get the occasional job offer. I was an over-the-road driver from 1991 to 2018 and my safety record speaks for itself. After I read the letter I just sat there, thought about it and just started smiling. Then I started getting emotional which something I rarely did/do. After a couple of emails I asked him for his area code and sent him my cellphone number. If the caller's number is not in my contacts my phone won't ring. That's how I have it set up. He also writes similar to the way write. He was adopted by a service member and grew up a military brat. I started life out as an Army brat.🤷🏼♂️ As you've probably noticed I, too, can get long winded in writing...
I'm still wondering if I have any others I don't know about. I'm in AncestryDNA's data bank now.

My father is my biological father. He didn't know about his family because when he was 19 years old he went to Antarctica with Operation High Jump, his dad died in surgery, and his parents had only one child, him. She thought she was alone in the world, so one day she burned all the family history, letters, pictures, death and birth certificates. This was 11 years before I was born. I might as well be adopted for all I knew about my father's family. Dad was a work a holic and used to work 16 hours and sometimes Saturdays. In college I took a course from BYU on genealogy and found out about many books writte about his family and my Mom's family. I learned even more with Ancestry in 2005 with the DNA test. I don't have relatives I know from that test from My Dad's family.
This is why people should not donate sperm or eggs, you might end up sleeping with a half sibling ,especially if its not regulated probably.
As someone with half siblings I think it should be allowed but all the children should be told from a young age. It shouldn’t be kept a secret. They should have the opportunity to grow up knowing each other, even if it’s just through letters or emails.

In other countries there are regulations against this, such as limits on donations and ensuring each recipient of sperm or eggs is not within a certain radius of one another.

Shame that the motivations of the donor were not explored, as up until the late 90s at my university, the main motivator was beer and entertainment money, which was quite significant for ten minutes' of each donor's time, and multiple donations were permitted.

Parents must STOP keeping paternal secrets from their kids. Period! Plus, just because a man is a sperm donor doesn't mean he is a great or honorable guy. Having 30+ kids using your sperm--artificially or naturally--with different women is a problem--no matter how you look at it!
Your "Dad" is the one who raised you. Your "father" is the one who is 1/2 of who gave you life.

My own situation is different, but with some similar twists? I was raised by my birth parents, and no one could have hoped for better parents. My shocker came late in life when, at age 69, I first learned that the man for whom I was named, and whom I believed for 69 years to be my paternal grandfather, was actually my step-grandfather! My dad was born at home in rural Middle Tennessee in 1901, so there was never a birth certificate for him, not unusual for the era and area. He was 5 years old when my step-granddad married my grandmother and, for convenience I suppose (no formal adoption took place?), he was simply given his step-dad's surname when he started school. As that was the first time for my dad to ever appear on any public record, that then became his legal surname and, by the time I became aware of all of this, any and every person who could have possibly shed light on the situation was already deceased. Although I am not an adopted child, I share with so many of those an unknown biological surname. I have done some Y-DNA research, which has provided some possible surnames, but I'll probably never know for certain who I really "am"?
If the child is young when adopted, or give away to someone, it's VERY common to take on their surname! It's also not uncommon for people not to know this unless they have looked into their family history! Though i'd recommend a basic DNA test from like ancestry to find a G Grandparent.

I was adopted. Born out of wedlock and given up. Later, I found my real mother, and found out that she had one child originally, left that family, moved to another state, and began a whole new life. She met a Sailor along the way, got pregnant with me, gave me up and then married a man she spent the rest of her life with. She had a son. But he knew nothing about me, or that our mom was married before and had a daughter that she abandoned. I found my half sister when we were both in our 70's and we became close. I tried to connect with my half brother, but because he couldn't accept that our mom had had the past that she had, he rejected the fact that we were half brothers. So, some things work out well and others, not so much. Be careful what you look for when you're adopted. You may not like what you find out. I'm glad to know my lineage, but for some our existence is but a skeleton in the closet. BTW, I support getting the DNA test if you're adopted. It's nice to know true nationality etc. I've found a whole bunch of cousins.

Remote chance of that happening, but there would be a slightly higher chance of birth defect. Inbreeding is only really problematic if it happens for several generations, as famously in the Habsburgs.
People remember that when a paternity test is done it's usually the father they're testing to see if he's the culprit
Interestingly enough I today watched an episode of Long Lost Family (US) wherein there was a brother and sister who were told when they were kids (aged 10 and 5) that their real father was a donor, that they came from the same donor, but they were sworn to secrecy which they kept for many years. They went onto Long Lost Family and submitted a DNA Test. It was found that they were not full brother and sister. They were devastated (they were very close). However. a match was found for both of them. The lady's father responded to contact, they met and are now developing a good relationship. The man's father had not responded. However, the brother and sister's relationship is closer as a result. I do hope the brother gets to meet his father or find out more. A feel a child needs to know its heritage on both sides.
With dead-beat dads, it is better to cut your losses and move on. Don't waste your life over someone who does not give you a moment's thought.
