I remember watching this when it aired. I feel like we ALL wanted Melfi to tell Tony about what happened but as we watch we learn that it’s just not that show.
If Melfi did that and if Tony were to act on it, she would now, in a way, be indebted to Tony and would lose her “power” in their relationship as doctor / patient. Melfi is perhaps the only female in Tony’s life who is completely independent of Tony - she accepts no gifts, no favors, she does not reciprocate any of his advances. She maintains the upper hand. One of the infinite reasons I love this show.

    • @Praetorian8814

Exactly. If she had said something to Tony, he'd do something about it and everything would be fine.
Then later, much later, even years later, it'd get brought up. It would be held over her - even if not directly said..
She would never be able to completely break away from him, professionally or personally. Because there would always be that being held over her to some degree.
      Melfi is smarter than that.

"Gabagool" is an attempted transcription of the southern italian pronunciation of the italian "Capocollo", literally head-neck, since those are the parts of meat used in it. You can find english cognates of the word collo in terms like collar, while "capo" for head is also the word for 'boss' in italian and it is the etymological equivalent of the english 'chief' which comes from the french 'chef', as in the spanish jefe, all of them deriving from the latin 'caput', which also becomes the german kaputt.

I know a lot of people get frustrated by the ending, but honestly it's what makes Employee of the Month one of my favorite pieces of television. Maybe the most powerful single word I've seen delivered. I feel like Melfi is really the only one on the show with any sort of moral compass, and she proves it here by not seeking the path of revenge which is so totally available to her.

@Cassxowary would you give up what she'd have to do it? Sure Tony might initially see it as doing justice but a man like him would always keep that "favor" in his back pocket for a rainy day. That would cross an ethical and legal line. The only way that that could possibly work is if she stopped treating him immediately afterwards and even then she's stll an accessory.

Meadow has a personality disorder just like her grandmother. She is trying to generate conflict to enjoy the drama. She deliberately set up the situation for Tony to see her cuddling Noah, then left them alone knowing exactly what would happen (it took AJ about 2 seconds to figure out what was said). Then, when Carmella went to see her, she had Noah in her dorm room, and was disappointed that Tony didn't come because there was no new drama to be had. She became even more agitated then pouts when Carmella refused to engage with her.

Melfi explains it herself in her own therapy session before the last scene with Tony. Knowing she could but not doing so is better for her, coming from who she is and her worldview. She'd be reversing a lifetime of strict adherence to very particular moral and ethical framework. Breaking that would, in the long term, ruin her life more than the attack. She'd never be able to live with it, she'd never be able to forgive herself and she'd probably get herself killed by eventually going to the police. It's easier to get over a bad thing being done to you than it is to get over knowing you did something you consider to be a bad thing. The viewer's judgement and wishes are irrelevant. Melfi believes in the rule of law, not the law of the streets/jungle. It's who she is.
If she told Tony and let the inevitable happen, she'd be transferring the 'power' that Rossi stole from her to Tony. By exercising restraint and being true to who she is in the core of her being, she truly took that power back for herself.

If I was Melfi I totally would've told Tony. Like you said though. Melfi is too good of a person. Crazy part is that she wouldn't even had to have told Tony anything other than the truth about what happened. Tony would've just taken in upon himself to take care of it. It really sux because stuff like this happens in real life. People get assaulted like this and sometimes the perp gets off with no punishment Free to do it again because the justice system is flawed. Employee of the Month is a hard episode to watch even though I've seen it a bunch of times.

Oh, about meadow dating a black dude. You should know, part of the reason she's with him IS to get back at dad. Meadow is rebellious right now. You heard the way she talked through the first two seasons. "I cant wait to get out of this house" and some other things. Its also why the relationship lasted as long as it did. She knew something was up with Noah. She gets in digs at her dad, "african Americans go to this school and some of them are my friends dad." She's definitely sticking it to her dad. Thats why Carmelia played it perfect the way she did, she knows her daughter is just like her dad. So she knows how to handle this situation. Noah is not just black hes rich, richer than the sopranos. So there's a class problem too. Tony has money no doubt, but not like this. Also he has a working class attitude. So be careful with meadow, shes alot like her dad.

5:50 so Chrissy just got "made" structure of the American Mafia: associates these are not members aka "made men" they basically are grunts Chrissy before this episode was an associate he was associated with the "family", associates strive to be "made". Soldiers are "made" members of a family. Chrissy is now a soldier, perks of being a "made" man : those of equal status or lower must show you respect no touching punching disrespectful language ect toward them "made men" are sometimes referred to untouchables even the wrong word to a made man by a non made man could lead them to be killed it's all about respect even people above them should treat you with respect but corrections even harsh from someone higher than you can be allowed in certain situations. Next up the food chain are "Caporegime (Capo or Captain for short)" are the like supervisors of a crew here Paulie is a Capo a crew is typically made up of soldiers and associates, Capo's report to the next up the food chain. The Underboss, currently to the FBI Tony is the Underboss but in reality Silvio is the underboss. Typically the underboss has a peer called the Consigliere aka a councilor to the boss at this time in the show Silvio is both the underboss and Consigliere. At the top of the food chain is the boss at this time in the show Tony is the boss of the family and Junior is the "Front Boss" because he is being used by Tony to make the FBI think that Junior is the Boss thus taking the heat from the authorities away from Tony. But typical structure is associate > soldier > Capo > under boss and consigliere are equals and then the boss.

If Dr Melfi had gotten Tony to do this deed for her Not only would she put herself down moraly on his level BUT Tony would eventually use it to get together with her in thevfuture It'd give Tony power over her. You have to think it through. And she broke down when the dog started varking in the background

Imagine if Malfi let it slip to Tony about what happened, he could find the guy and make him pay. Hello 👋🏻

I guess you find out what kind of person you are in episode 4. Personally, because i often feel punishments don’t fit crimes, I wanted Jesus to get ripped to shreds, just like her life and confidence will be. Remember shouting ‘TELL HIM’.

As a survivor episode 4 is always triggering. Only watched that scene once. Can’t do it again. I’ve seen a lot of movies and shows that have the r scene but idk this one is the worst I’ve seen. It has zero music in the back, no cuts, just feels like it lasts forever.
Just imagine if Tony walked in on THAT happening ….so many “what ifs” from this episode

Thank you for sharing, Sofia, and I’m so so so sorry that you’ve been through something like that. The scene is so raw, like you mention, no music, no cuts, just SA. It was shocking to watch, and I can’t imagine what it would feel like as a survivor.

What is great about this show and this episode spesifically its projecting why people needed mafia in the first place. Police the legitimate order let go of the rapist cause of some paperwork mistake. In this kind of situations people needed mafia. Thats the reason of why mafia started in Italy, sicily spesifically. I m not saying mafia is a good thing but its more complex than it looks.

I just watched this episode myself. The single most emotionally devastating episode of TV I have ever seen. The episode was fantastic, but part of me wants to block it out of my mind because of how horrifically traumatising it was. For me, this was more than just an episode of TV, this genuinely scarred me and im struggling to get it out of my head. The acting was fucking oscar worthy imo.

I was dreading this episode because it's one thing to watch as a man its messed up but witnessing a woman watch becomes heart wrenching.

I Definitely wanted more episodes about Dr. Melfi, but this is not what I had in mind🫣🫢😱, also your dog barking during that last therapy scene was a nice touch😉👌
