So glad I found your channel! I just subscribed because I don’t want to miss anything. I’m just learning right now so I’ll be ready in the spring.
Watching from Arkansas. First year beekeeper and your videos have been a ton of help. Thanks for what you do!
Beetle Blasters work great. I found that the pollen patties I used early on were attracting the beetles. Saw the comment below that someone suggested using a small strip at a time instead of a big patty. Learned something new here about wax months - thanks so much!
You inspired me to get my first swarm this past Saturday and im so glad I did its only been a couple days and who knows what will happen but it was so amazing the hive is just so interesting and alive and thus far no stings. Thank you.
Howdy David, really glad to see another video up. Really needed that this week
Hi David great video I really liked it keep up the great work buddy!
Y'all I joined in on a bee chat with David and Joe Mays from Little Bits honey bees. I explained to them I was having a horrible time with wax moth. They advise me 2 get a bug zapper. It has literally eradicated the problem
Yeah interesting, we never see a major dearth up here in Canada. We jump from trees to dandelions to clover to milkweed then to goldenrod. Our season is shorter so everything is pushed together. We definitely have peaks to flows but always have something flowering.
Thanks for the upload!
We use the Guardian on all of our hives. Has made a huge difference in the number of beetles.
Thanks for the tips! Very helpfull.
I found a more effective non-chemical herbicide than the vinegar/salt solution. Food grade mineral oil will not only kill vegetation but lasts much much longer. It takes a few more days to kill but it will last most if not all the summer. It's also completely safe to use around bees and other animals.
Thank You this is a very helpful Video!!!
Denham Springs,la we have been using the powdered ultra bees. They are on it like crazy. Is there a too much pollen. We also use the patties, however, we only put a slice 1"wide. They take it up quickly during inclimate weather.
Very good pictures. Steady hand.
David, get some "TORCHED " Weed Killer. It's organic and mostly cinnamon oil and thyme oil.
im a littll;e ways away from robing still up here nector flow is going right now still good info
I am having a problem with the bees using propolis and sealing up my Beetle Barns. I have clean them up every time I open a hive. I suspect the bees run a beetle or two in and try to keep them there by sealing the openings. Any ideas to keep them open. They do work because a lot of times there will be 10-15 dead beetles inside the barn. I just wonder how many more would be in there if the entrances did not get sealed up. Like your videos.
I noticed robbing last week so i added the entrance reducers to stop that, now in 2 years, i have yet to see a beetle in my hives. Must not be an issue here Found a mouse last year lol in hive 2 lol
I am lucky in the area i live. We never have a dearth. There is always something. They are still bringing it in mostly alfalfa.
Hi David, found out why my queens stop laying few weeks ago . I had no idea Buckeye trees are poisonous to bees. they're done blooming now. and bees are cleaning out the bad stuff and the Queens are laying again.. have a good one buddy and take care.
I did not know that about Buckeyes. I knew half of the nut is poisonous and only squirrels knows the difference. Not sure how true that is about the squirrels.
@@davidhaught84 , its the California Buckeye that's poisonous. all the rest are good..
Hay can you use wood chips under your stands to keep the weeds down & away? Love your channel & videos keep it up and going please.
Hey David......thank you for this video very helpful. I do have a couple questions, " Do you use the pollen feeder all thru winter?" And "What is your take on those Apigaurd gel packs?"
I told you I bought those pollen patties omg I hate em 😂 what a mess. I guess you have to live and learn. The bees liked em in the bigger hive but the little Nuc box colony they weren't as attracted to it. I am super worried about that little hive......I had problems with the queen either dying at one point or she left with some bees I am not even sure what happened......they did make a new queen and I seen the mating flight on this past Monday....that was a neat experience to watch lol I didn't have my phone charged of course....that woulda been a neat video to share.
We keep the pollen feeders running year round just incase, cause if you get alot of rain natural pollen can be depleted. I've never tried the apigaurd gel packs.
@@davidhaught84 Oh I didn't know that about the pollen guess it makes sense that the rain would wash it away...thanks.
how long do you normally take deposits on your packages? I would like to get 2 packages for Birmingham Alabama. But i won't be able to pay until late August will I still have time to get in?
what do you think about the asian hornet and using screen on the entrance of the hive what size of screen do you recommend. Thanks
The guardian beetle blocker would work great. Or block to 1/8 inch.
thanks
Is there a way to buy or store apivar strips? The smallest pack I've seen is a 10 pack which means if you only have 1 or 2 hives they expire before I can use them.
its so sad that our area has practically no pollinators. I have seen THREE honey bees, a few tiny bumble bee looking things and a hand full of red wasps. I remember when i had to kill the clover in my yard so the kids could play out there because the honey bees were EVERYWHERE. Now i have a yard full of clover an no bees.
@RobinC It is sad. Live next to a 2 acre lot that developers clear cut last spring (in the middle of nesting season 😢, but I digress). Up until then there were bees everywhere, both hive and solitary - now not a single one. Thankfully at least the bumbles (tho diminished) are hanging on. Wish I’d caught the bee bug sooner and tried to swarm catch, but I didn’t know what I didn’t know... Hopefully bees will return for us all.
Our yard was the same way I never seen a bee or a clover hardly in it, but once we got our hives I watched the big lot of yard we own get covered in white clover and the tree by my hives....well it was about half dead....the bees brought it back I kid you not....it was really magical to watch that tree come back to life.
What do you get on your nuc and do you ship
If clover is still blooming pretty good nearby, do you consider it a dearth? When does clover stop blooming there?
How far from the hive should I place the bug zapper??
About 200 feet.
great info dave. here in california we still have toyon and some mountain flowers blooming
Curious David if you see large horse flies hanging around and grabbing bees, ive seen it twice now never even heard of it before.
I've never heard of that before, but I don't see many horse flies.
@@davidhaught84 I found this article www.honeybeesuite.com/robber-flies-grab-bees-in-flight/ thought it was a horse fly as if we dont have enough pests already
Thinking about getting into keeping bees. I am worried about the bees in the winter here in zone 4-5. How do bees survive in the winter in areas where it gets really cold? Do they need an insulated hive?
I've got beekeeping friends in Canada, they do very well.
@@davidhaught84
Ok thanks
Do they insulate the hive for winter? Or just leave it as is?
Most people in colder area will wrap there hives in insulation like foam and also put berlap on the top of there hives to help with moisture.
How long does the weed killer work?
About a month to 6 weeks.
