    An old mate of mine is a founding member of the Outlook, Horizons, Dimension and a couple of other summer festivals. But the same crew also put on regular nights in several UK cities. That's a proper business plan, spreading risk and maximizing the productivity of all employees. Resting all your hopes on one festival seems like madness to me.

      They're *trash* , they don't pay any of their "workers", it's all on interns and volunteer basis. They get paid on food and t-shirts.

      There are two kinds of people. Settlers and conquerers. Conquerers must have low environmental foot mark but big sociologic impact on their tours. Settlers or in this case capital city spirits must built with rocks and stones, but have only moderated influence on society.

    The sad reality of the events industry is that you need to have the capital to be able to sustain a few losses, because it's impossible to guarantee success, especially in the UK where the weather plays a massive in role in how much money the bars and other traders make. It's the main reason why all of the major festivals are done by companies like AEG and Live Nation.

    As someone recently very interested in being involved in a festival like a years ago, seeing this now makes me very hopeful and inspired of it all!! Even though this showed many hardships these independent festival companies had to go through, I want to be in a strong role with a music festival and want to find more of these opportunities. Right now I am figuring out which way I should narrow down what I can contribute, because I do find the photography/videography, sound mixing, stage set up, music performance, and DJing to all be an amazing part for festivals and I can see myself doing any of those

    Hello guys, I’m watching this because I am from mexico and in my local region there is no such thing as music festivals. Sometimes we get artist coming to local fair events but no live music festivals. I feel people will appreciate something like this since I know people enjoy this type of events but have to travel really far in order to go to one (which involves extra costs for them). I have a team whom I plan to start one. No big thing you know. Just something small like a “party” and see where it all goes from there. I am not afraid to lose my money. I believe and have faith in this in the hope that it can strive for years. Any tips from any organizers?

    Great video. Here in Chile we have a few imported festivals (Lolla, Womad), but I just realized watching this video that our version of UK's summer festivals are the free, one day "festivals" that throw the municipalities in the summer, specially in elections season. Is one of the two big income sources for the musicians and music workers (the other being the national festivities in september). I wonder if people accustomed to attend free concerts would be willing (or even able) to pay a commercial festival.

    I think WOMAD was originally set up by Peter Gabriel. What was good about it was the fact that it was in a different location each year. I went in 1985, when it was staged at Mersea Island in Essex. The only festival I ever went to that I actually swam in the sea from the beach. The Fall, The Pogues and New Order were the Headliners for the main stage, but all of the other smaller Marqueee stages with World music also attracted crowds. I honestly thought that Womad had stopped at the end of The 80's.

    I'm on the side of festivals, but I would suggest use of a source other than the Association of Independent Festivals for an estimate of the contribution to the UK economy and employment. Perhaps HM Treasury or the Department for Culture, Media and Sport?
    Otherwise, fascinating report. Really excellent!
    I suppose during the pandemic, you would have to assure customers they can receive a full refund if they test positive for COVID-19 (ahead of the event) to prevent them attending while carrying the virus; which would then necessesitate a doubling or tripling of the standard ticket prices to offset expected losses. And, of course, few people in festival-going demographics could afford that.

    FT's first example of a high-risk business is a Viscount, "a British nobleman ranking above a baron and below an earl," using his aristocratically titled lands and palace to throw a party and charge admission, and then *MANAGING TO GET THROWN IN PRISON FOR NOT PAYING THE PERFORMERS*. And then getting out, and throwing another one, because he STAKED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on the outcome; He has lost none of the means. He's just some rich partyboy who wants to party and has zero consequences for failure.

    Musical Artists almost always make absolutely nothing from album sales. The profit they make from sales go towards paying off their advance from the label which pays for music videos, living expenses whilst writing and the studio expenses. If they're making about 4-8% from their album sales and advances can range from £5k to £1m you can do the maths. Even the biggest acts in the world are perpetually paying off their advances. From what I've heard in the music industry even Ed Sheeran hasn't made any money.

    • @matthewburris769
      @matthewburris769 3 роки тому +11

      That's not really entirely true at all. They make money, they just don't make MONEY, and F you MONEY is what they mean when they say they're not making any. BTW, the biggest acts in the world, aren't getting advances. They're fulfilling contracts. Want MONEY? Write the songs, become a sought after producer. This isn't the 70's anymore.
