- / themeparkstop New Fantasyland was the biggest expansion in Magic Kingdom's history, but not everything went as planned. Here's how the project changed and evolved, mostly for the better, as it was built from 2009 to 2014.
Opening in phases, New Fantasyland was touted as the largest single expansion to the Magic Kingdom since it opened in 1971. The expansion added a few new areas to the land, along with several new rides, attractions, and dining options. It was also a good use of empty spaces created by not replacing previously closed attractions around the area. But what we got wasn't exactly what was first announced a few years earlier. Let's look back at how a princess-centric expansion was reevaluated, and actually improved, at Magic Kingdom's New Fantasyland.

Western River Expedition (probably would’ve been a more well received replacement to WDW’s Splash Mountain if they planned to revive the concept), Fire Mountain, and/or Villains/Bald Mountain

Permanent Meet and greet areas, always a waste of space. Disney characters roaming around the area is much better, it gives the land more life and makes the encounters more magical to guests.
Agreed. Getting rid of prime real estate for a dark ride in fantasyland (where Snow Whites Scary Adventure was) for a princess meet and greet is such a tragedy

Certain meet-and-greet areas can be temporary!
The problem as is always with Disney is park capacity. Set meet and greet areas are a cheap way to occupy time therefore freeing up lines at rides. And whilst having characters walking around is always nice if that was the only way to meet those characters with the crowd sizes it would be chaos.

Didn't know how much was cut from seven dwarfs. Will love to see the original toy story land and how it changed at Hollywood studios

I don’t know why magic kingdom never got a Cinderella dark ride, it makes complete sense in Orlando’s fantasyland. Oh well.
"Cinderella" is my favorite Disney film so I would love a Cinderella ride!
A dark ride with impressive ride vehicles would be pretty cool for both Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland!

cool video as always! my dad actually worked on new fantasyland (specifically, building the new queue for dumbo) and he once took me w him bc he needed to talk to one of his workers or something- i stayed in the car but i have a vivid memory of seeing what might've been an ariel figurine/animatronic thing? that was def a highlight for 11 year-old me lol. unfortunately we never actually got to go to the opening bc we moved the summer b4 it opened but we finally visited magic kingdom in 2017 and my dad could NOT stop talking about how he built this this and that lmao
I believe seven dwarves mine train has shanghai disneyland to thank. This was initially planned for that park but was "borrowed" for Magic Kingdom.
That makes sense. It was probably being designed around the same time they were looking for something more exciting for New Fantasyland, even though Shanghai wouldn’t open until two years after Mine Train opened at Magic Kingdom.
I still really miss Snow Whites Scary Adventure. Surely they could have built the Princess Hall elsewhere and still saved a classic ride but image is everything.
Having two rides of the same IP located in two different places within the same park would feel inconsistent, hence why they moved the Mad Tea Party next to the Alice dark ride when Anaheim had its own New Fantasyland in the early 80's.
Disney should've kept SWSA. I wish they would've at least replaced it with another dark ride. It's really a downgrade to change a ride into a meet 'n' greet building.

To me both iterations of the new Fantasy Land expansions were/are pretty underwhelming, but so far it looks like Tokyo is finally spending the money to do it correctly.
Gotta love Tokyo. They have the balls to take stuff to the next level. Love WDW and DL, but Tokyo is my dream park just because the Imagineers have the freedom to do what they want.
Yep. I’d love to see better expansions to Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom with better rides and less meet-and-greet experiences.
The Beast’s castle should be bigger and could incorporate both the Beauty and the Beast dark ride and the Be Our Guest restaurant and the Tangled area could include the proposed boat-themed spinner ride from the Paris resort!
I’m actually glad they decided against so many permanent meet and greet locations. The end result was much better in my opinion! Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has got to be one of my favorite rides in Magic Kingdom!
Personally I don't like the idea of tearing down rides just to replace them with permanent meet and greets.
They should just bring back a greater version of Mickey’s Toontown Fair

I hate meet and greets but the Chateau housing a Cinderella dark ride and the Woodcutter’s Cottage containing a Sleeping Beauty dark ride would have been fabulous!

Biggest mistake was shortening seven dwarfs ride.. massive line always ended with a disappointment with its quick run time
Pixie hollow is an amazing tiny place! It should stay!
The Mine Train is such a lot of excitement over nothing. The queue is more fun than the ride, even for kids.

It’s not what was originally announced but it’s still a great area of the park. Glad they came up with Mine Train. Such a cool ride with amazing animatronics

I got to do a preview of this land before it opened which was fun. I wanted a lot more from the Beast’s castle. We have family photos from the old grotto too. I would’ve loved to see anything with the 3 fairies! Great job with this video as usual! 😊
The Beast's castle is kind of pathetic looking. I now notice a really big lack of anything regarding "Sleeping Beauty."

I remember when they announced this expansion with the sleeping beauty and cinderella themes. I thought it was cool but I'm glad they went back to the drawing board and change it. Went for the first time last year and it was amazing. So its interesting to see what could of been. In the end im glad they change things. :)
It's passe, but Nintendo in USO Fievel area. I recently binged some older Theme Park vlogs, and you would (not) believe the rock solid confidence about Nintendo coming soon (and Ministry of Magic). Yes, I know work walls up and plans approved by city. But confidence is still amazing...

I think you should find all the Disney projects that DIDN'T have budget cuts before opening. But then that would be a very short video.
On that note, I am actually interested in seeing an updated "Epcot Changes" video with all the stuff they immediately eliminated from that plan. Sort of a "D23 Epcot Broken Promises" video. It's one thing to make public announcements and not follow through with them - things happen - but people paid $89 for what was basically a long commercial and now most of it was lies. And that wouldn't even be that much of a problem if there was any hope of this stuff appearing just a year or two late, but we know most of this will just get swept under the rug and promptly forgotten. Just like the last time Disney had "big plans" for Epcot (see Project Gemini, which would be a great lead-in to this though, in regular Disney fashion, the Guardians coaster is a product of that earlier Project, coming back to life after a couple decades living up in the blue sky). Disney doesn't need a pandemic to eliminate things, as it's their company mission: Stockholders first, park guests 28th! Look at how quickly they oiled up the chopping block after reopening. That certainly wasn't for guests, who are getting fewer experiences, yet are still paying $109. And most of what they are now cutting from the Epcot plan is theming! How much are they really saving not building this Moana micro-neighborhood?
I've said it before, but it deserves repeating: This Epcot "Project" wasn't "fantastic"; it was OVERDUE! Epcot hasn't gotten a NEW ride since 2005! And when was the last new country pavilion? Yet the price has somehow skyrocketed from $59.75 that year to $109 now. IN SLOW SEASON. Normally summer would be $139! And what has Universal done? Yeah, many of their attractions did replace previous attractions, but people would be hard-pressed to claim things hadn't improved greatly at those parks in the same 15 years. At least it hasn't been a bunch of Meet 'n' Greets, right? So all of this would be a great video, actually.
I’ve heard that the only things that aren’t being done is the Mary Poppins expansion at the UK Pavilion and the Spaceship Earth refurb, but they’ve only been delayed and not eliminated. Apparently they removed both scenes from the EPCOT Experience, but that was all that they removed. Has more been cut?
I wish they had built a Matterhorn ride in World Showcase in the Swiss pavilion as originally planned. But I guess that evolved into Expedition Everest.

These meet and greets are good ideas and I'm sure if done in similar style to Enchanted Tales with Belle, would have been great. However I agree this would have been a bit much if all of them would have been completed. Mine Train is a much better use of the space.
I’m a big fan of Mine Train. I think it’s the perfect centerpiece for the Enchanted Forest. The good news is, with the Belle’s magical mirror moment, (and a gorgeous restaurant and tavern,) it sounds like they kept the best meet and greet out of the bunch.
@@ThemeParkStop Very True, although a transforming gown moment for Cinderella sounds interesting and I would have loved to see that too. Maybe thats something we could get one day. Probably not high on the priority list for them at the moment though.
Search for cosplay Cinderella changing dress online. There’s some great versions of it made by fans out there!

It's a shame they shortened 7 Dwarfs Mine Train so much since it's a noticeably short ride. Especially considering it replaced a classic opening day dark ride.
They are lucky to have changed the meet and greets given how the current pandemic
I'd love to know whether you folks have ever heard of any plan to move it's a small world to EPCOT. If that was done, the building that had contained it would be large enough to fit three or four dark rides, with enough room for a crooked little European street!

I was one of the Lucky ones who actually rode ALL of those OLD Rides! I miss them! 😪 That's one thing I don't like bout places getting rid of OLD to ADD something NEW!! Why not have both? Some people like Retro stuff these days. The Only Ride I never got to go on was Space Mountain. My Mom was terrified of it & pregnant. So if she don't go, neither did you! It's ALL GOOD!! I know she Cares ❤ for Us & of course Loves Us ALL! 😇

I kinda liked the idea of cinderella´s chateau, but she already has enough of a presence in the park. Maybe they should add that meet and greet inside the castle.
Anyone else notice that "Sleeping Beauty" really doesn't have much of a presence anymore? Do people not like her as much now? She should have her own dark ride with the marvelous Maleficent intimidating the onlookers.
They should have kept the enchanted forest but with more rides and more focused on fairytales in general rather than only princesses. They should have kept the the dwarfs walking on log scene this ride should have been longer.
Geyser Mountain or the Fuji Coaster or Rhine River Cruise or Thames River Cruise
It's a crime that those Mickey's Birthdayland tents still exist. So weird that Florida has 2 Dumbo rides. They should have added an actual Casey Jr. ride. Barnstormer could have been an Alice Caterpillar coaster. So many missed opportunities for this Fantasyland.

I like this idea very much but I can't say I like the replacement of Snow White's Scary Adventures with a Princess Fairy Tale Hall as the space for a new meet and greet feels to small for that of a former dark ride. Maybe they should've still built the Fairy Tale Hall in it's own private space in the new Fantasyland and replaced Snow White's Scary Adventures with the former/popular Mr. Toad's Wild Ride or a brand new dark ride that never existed there such as Pinocchio's Daring Journey.

This was when they were trying to catch up to Universal Groundbreaking Harry Potter. Took them a few years to catch up though, this didn’t compare. And honestly, as much as I love Galaxies edge, I still don’t think it compares either

I really wish It's a Small World was rebuilt outside the MK, like in Disneyland, with the entrance in the tents area. Kind of like in Hong Kong maybe... the current location is terrible and could be opened up to Rivers of America for a new Fantasyland"wing" (at least 2 new rides could be built. Maybe Tangled and Pinocchio...)

I'm actually OK with how New Fantasyland ended up from it's original concept. I'm pretty sure I, a 20 year old bearded guy, would get dirty looks if I walked into half of these planned attractions.
I wish they stick to the original concept. Would of been nice to see pixie hallow and where Cinderella lived too. I always thought they were finally going to renovate the tea cups ride. The roof needs style almost like in the one in Paris
Well, Cinderella lives in the castle now. I think it would’ve been weird to see her in her evil stepmothers home personally. Although, I’m with you on Pixie Hollow. I’m not the biggest fan of the two circus “tents” they have in that area currently. Maybe one day they can do something a little more well themed back there than that.
I believe pixie hollow will be reincarnated at fantasy springs in Tokyo Disney sea

Meet and greet the land
For such a crowded and popular park the 7DMT is much too short and because of that has terrible capacity. I also think Dombo's presents is too big, the fab five deserve a land.
As beautiful as it is now, I kinda feel like Dumbo lost a bit of its magic when they moved it out of Fantasyland proper. Flying around the center of the busy land was half the appeal.
What about our new Fantasyland. I forgot that the original Disneyland is the bastard.
