never kill a player without a reasonable narative. a dm should guide the players but the players have to choose their actions themselves. but saying "you want this cool stuff, convince me why you should have it at level 1" and maybe throw in some disadvantages for the charcter too. maybe the armor has some curse that the wearer can't ride while wearing it or the horse is willfull and to ride it while in armor requires a check and if you fail you get thrown off. there are many ways you could balance the indifference out. but never outright kill a character by declaring it with the power of the dm.
*Wow.... That was heart-wrenching!* I've unfortunately been in a few scenarios with a player with main character syndrome as well and had to leave a bit like Fizzerband did but without a lesson being taught. When a player hogs the spotlight, items, and talks over/ invalidates characters it only makes it worse when a DM enables them. I'm sharing this so many others can be aware and grow as people too.
This wizard was a victim of some kind of favoritism. The fighter was clearly overpowered and the DM was a gutless coward for not putting their foot down. Just because a role is successful doesn't mean something still cannot go wrong. An obvious lie should fail when caught in it. The DM should be the final word, every single time.
I am a firm believer that high persuasion does NOT equal mind control. And am sickened on how some characters with a high charisma and lenient/favored DM get to just control the actions and perceptions of practically everyone they come across. Even when caught in blatant lies and still manage to talk their way out.
@@crowsenpai5625 PhB literally agrees with you there. A successful (even nat 20) persuasion or deception roll doesn't mean you get the desired outcome- just the best *possible* one. Keyword here, being "possible". Like, at some point, the townspeople believe their beloved fighter and hero has been impersonated / mind-controlled and that's why he's spouting nonsense now.
@@bragnir Here's a saying that goes: You jump a 500 foot cliff.. you roll a nat 20. You jump 80 feet.. then die of falling damage into the cliff. Just cause you rolled a D20.. doesn't mean you gain god powers. (unless cleric with divine intervention) This is the logic you need to tell people. the whole nat 20/great rolls do not always mean you get the outcome you want. WIch reminds me of my nat20 rolling barbarian... Who somehow saw through a lich's magic disguise and convinced them to give them a magical scroll of fireball (they were level 3) since the Lich clearly didn't want to be revealed. Then the barbarian decided to push his luck and convince the Lich to "join the party" ...That failed.. not spectaculary.. the Lich was in public trying to hide. But if they succeeded I told my players afterwarts... "What do you think would happen with a Lich in the party? ...Yes they are powerfull but think of it as this. They have their own agenda." Another player said: "They might backstab us at any moment or experiment on us or turn us into a vessel for if they die!" I just smirked at that XD So yea... Nat 20 doesnt mean GODLIKE! Though that party does have alot of money and a fairy dragon as a pet. But I only did that since most of them are new and I want them to have fun. Besides the sorcerer who got the scroll and pet nearly died session 1.... Reason? Rushed into the combat head 1st as a level 1 sorcerer then get Crit attacked by the 1st attack! Going down right away. ....To this day they still havent learned to NOT rush in ahead and frequently get bailed out by allies. Even with pet XD
@@crowsenpai5625 Yeah, an obvious lie versus a natural 20 deception role means the person being lied to, says, "Ahahah! I see what you're doing there. Good joke! Now, on to the business at hand. I can plainly see that X happened, and we need to figure out where to go from here." As in, Natural 20 means they laugh about your deception, rather than being as righteously angry as they normally would be. Or, you want to parkour your way up a 150 foot slick and smooth wall. You get a Natural 20, which means you fall in a graceful and impressive acrobatic twist and stick the landing, making everyone around you erupt in cheers and applause, taking no damage. You still can't get up the 150 foot wall, but the Nat 20 means you don't die on the drop.
Why would the DM allow the fighter to roll persuasion against the party? That and allowing the fighter to take magic items that were clearly meant for the wizard. Fighter and DM were both villains.
I really hope that this was just some fantastic rp from the wizard player before leaving a toxic group and that he is hale and healthy because moments of that story, especially the ending have me very concerned for the person
It has been quite some time since a story the likes of Astoshan the Grey, has been shared and grateful are we that it was shared with us. Fizzerband Necreed, taught us to be better.
They say it’s just a game, and this is true. It is just a game… But, how we play the game-even the choices we make towards the environment and NPCs-can reveal hidden truths about our true selves, whether we want to regard/accept them or not. You will be remembered, Fizzerban.
May Fizzerband be remembered among gods and immortals, for his bravery is greater than anything in this realm one day i would like to find people like him to stand at its side, no matter the risk, this is what a hero looks like and i would be proud to be told a part of his tales.
A great example of how short the road is between petty self interest and sinking into a mire of evil neutrality. Heroes should be interested in the well being of others- not just their own fame and glory.. I guess crushing all the pebbles makes for a smooth road in the end...
This reminds me of the one time I focused hard on roleplay over gameplay. It was because gameplay wise, I was ignored and effectively exiled. Until they thought they'd need me. I opted to have my character care for a child who was completely screwed in life, and I wanted to ensure the child lived. The players all tried to harass me, and I made it clear to the DM I wasn't budging, so they removed me from initiative, and focused purely on the fight. I then muted my mic, as I listened in on the fight going on.
There was the moral compass wizard, problem human fighter, rogue, barbarian, and cleric of unknown god... not sure if he just died too quickly or if the cleric was a battle cleric or something, but yea. Still, even if they did heal him, he might just fire another one.
Honestly... Zinned is not the only problem here. This DM fucked up at almost every turn. Persuasion rolls should be handled like stealth, if it's not reasonable, it shouldn't be considered even IF it's a nat 20
@@minc1236 makes sense saying as if you convince the player in-game, a persuasion roll is a bit unneeded since the player is essentially the character. Deception is probably a bit more needed with the deception vs insight checks though.
@@osiristheexile5457 The thing is, most of the other players were newbies who had 0 clue what was going on. While it doesn't absolve them completely of being complicit, you also can't just pin the blame on them as if they were 20-year veteran players who genuinely should have known better.
Recently we added a Paladin and bard to our party and so Paladin started with a mount (chocobo with axe beak stat block). Also got decent armor. This was fine by our group though. Our cleric player had just left the party due to their own circumstances and so our tiny party had whittled down to just me, a ranger, and our wizard. Before anyone gets up in arms thinking this is favoritism, it wasn’t. We decided as a group, during the new players’ session 0, that this type of thing was ok considering the level they were joining us at, which was 4. They didn’t have any magic items and were allowed to pick items from the phb with a gold starting to better simulate the level difference than most adventure starting games. This was actually a good set of people to get. Our group was already roleplay heavy and these two ended up being amazing roleplayers too. Paladin and I even worked on, during their session 0, of weaving our backstories together. Dm has actually been inspired by all the roleplay lately and is planning to implement more backstory ties into the narrative for all of us and had us write out more detailed ones. This is actually because almost all, except the Paladin, roleplayed that we had some type of connection with twins. The wizard has twin younger siblings, the bard is looking for their twin who ran away from home, and my character’s twin died a long time ago during a power struggle of three royal factions. The Paladin is even tied in to the twinning since this is the incident that ties Paladin to my ranger’s backstory. I just am bringing this all up because I want to say how grateful I am for my dnd group. I get to roleplay and it’s fun, even during the tense or sad moments, and I have a good group of strangers I fell in with that love to roleplay and whom love to roleplay with me. The dm is also knowledgeable and fair and encourages us to weave our stuff together and work together. And we do! It’s just awesome.
Without a doubt, a bonafide Ashtoshan. There are only a few stories that qualify...a certain lizard folk's cunning actions against the rich and their own party qualify. A wizard guiding the party from haze to heartfelt is yet another Ashtoshan. An award beyond the standard.
Sadly, this lesson was hard learned, my first thought is the dm of that game should have taken better care to balance out the item...a fighter with an intelligence magic item....cmon! Hope the player behind fizzerband had a group that respects him now. Glad at least one player learned something. This story was heart wrenching but also amazing!
I wish this wizard the best, truly a player of the Game who rolled a Natural 20 on Wisdom. Teaching the party (most of them) a valuable lesson. I give this wizard another title. Fizzerban the Courageous Sage. This is 3 times now on this channel a spellcasters story has made me feel bitter sweet.
That last message... It was directed at everyone, I feel. Zaned most of all. But, well, the party realized it themselves at the end. They were no better for their complacency and inaction.
I was in similar situation as the wizard player some years ago (not a D&D game though). God, it is hard and heart-wrenching. From that time I just leave games that turn that way.
he sounds like he's struggling with alot knowing there's a disease called GERD which makes your voice sound deep or scary according to the player the fact that they also deleted their account worries me
@@theeinertia4106 Hopefully, he just got a new account on Roll 20, and just stayed simply text-only, never speaking, because "I'm a mute, RL," and so with the number of people texting on the platform, OP never realized it was the same person, or simply never encountered them again. Or, the player got onto another platform, entirely. Or, the player got into real-life, at the table, play, with FRIENDS and people he could trust, rather than the luck-of-the-draw you get on such online platforms as Roll 20.
Uh no, Fizzerband has a very good mental health. Having high morality don't equates to mental health problem. I myself left a group of players at the end of a campaign because I was disgusted by their mentality. Despite my efforts to make them cease to be selfish murders hobos searching “fame” and “gp, magic items”. What's cool in DnD is that the lack of moral reflect on characters. I hope Fizerban is still playing with REAL players and this group stopped inflicting their stupidity and bs on another group ever. I wonder who was gobbling whom's balls, was it the DM or Zened.
Fizzerban, wherever you are, I hope you're ok (IRL especially). You're needed in this world, and others. * makes notes to put the legend of Fizzerban into a bard's tale ingame so other players know *
Yeah I see a lot of this being the DM's fault. Like yes Zinan was trash, but he was extremely enabled trash. Also so many parts that as a DM I disagree with. Persuasion against other players, loot hoarding, zero consequences for so many horrible actions, bullying another player. So so much stuff. And yeah "we're new players" that excuse doesn't fly with me. Having zero moral compass or anything you're basically in the same camp as death camp guards. Again a lot of that goes on to the DM. Like four sessions in I had my players surrounded by guards after ignoring two warnings to not kill in the city. I gave them an out, but it was a not so subtle showing that there are consequences to actions.
we are all one. we understand the darkness best, after seeing the brilliant light together with the darkness. we see the contrast. if you didnt see the contrast between fizzerband and zegnev at the beginning, then you could only see it if the contrast got bigger. kinda like our time now, lots of people think some things are ok, when they really arent, but as the injustice becomes more clearly seen, the more people know without a doubt that something evil happened.
Bro Fizzerban is so cool. (Not sure if I spelled that right) I hope they see this video and that they get some closure knowing that the tiger guy got what was coming to them.
I remember that 22 years back, when the Internet was still young and I experienced RP only through certain Forum types, *whenever* I noticed an obvious powerplayer right from the get-go and after the first 2 minutes of observance, I immediately pointed it out and told players with an totalitarian, god-like attitude how I would not participate in a bullshit one-man show festival and I spoilered right from the beginning what the dangers of such people are. *_Some hated me, loudly. Most appreciate me, silently._* At least this is how I believe it went down. Yeah I snuffed many horrorstorys before they could level up.
The only thing I actually ( *a very tiny little bit* ) commend the dm on this is the fact fizerband aged as everything about the feywild is chaotic even the time
I will be honest, I got a million flashbacks to all the murderhobo pc playing people I ever met when I heard Zined say that pebble line. A lot of people will abuse the fact that they are in an online group to get away with horrible in character actions and sh*t, because the distance makes them bold. People (or rather that kind of person) don't play nicer when they are playing at a physical table next to other people, they play worse when its online. It's something I've seen repeatedly over the years. People basically strongarming a party etc while being inhumane to npcs and sh*t making the players uncomfortable.
Good sir, I hope this finds you well. I love the stories you get. I was wondering if it possible to get this out on other podcasting platforms. I No longer use Spotify. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Ya know Fizzerban may have just helped me flesh out a god in the pantheon I’m creating. I didn’t know how to write a truly sacrificial and selfless character in an impactful way that gets not just your attention but gets you in your feelings in such a way. Even if it was never intended that’s probably what makes this that much more impactful. Literally the truest form of sacrifice without falling to evil means or revenge. I mean to be frank revenge against the power gamer in this story was my first thought. Not selflessness like this player. Hope he’s ok.
Opinion: a Roll in persuasion can only persuade someone/something to do something they'd possibly do, may it be as abstract a concept As persuading a halfling to mount a Black Dragon . If it would be something that person would never do under no circumstances whatsoever no amount of persuasion will change that.
"So what? This is what my character would do" says the player as their rogue steals from the innocent. "Speaking of which..." reply the paladin with smite & wizard with planeswalk. Seriously, wtf is up with these powerplayers? Just think what they're like in real life!
I really hope fizzerans player didnt do what it sounded like he did he said he was tired of it all Sounds like he may have killed himself and he might have been struggling with some sort of depression and dnd was an escape and they just reminded him that their is no escape
op makes himself sound like he was an innocent newbie watching another player ruin fizzerban's experience, a bit way too much that I'm lead to believe that op might be more toxic during the campaign that he's painting himself. Basically the toxic player's their scapegoat and he can come off as this level headed guy that didn't know better. good writing though.
May Fizzerband, the goldhearted and noble wizard rest in peace

Imagine a man who has no luck and no strength doing the work of an entire team. While the team had all the luck and strength.... but did nothing.
(unless cleric with divine intervention)
This is the logic you need to tell people. the whole nat 20/great rolls do not always mean you get the outcome you want.
They have their own agenda."
Another player said: "They might backstab us at any moment or experiment on us or turn us into a vessel for if they die!"
I just smirked at that XD
So yea...
I can plainly see that X happened, and we need to figure out where to go from here."
As in, Natural 20 means they laugh about your deception, rather than being as righteously angry as they normally would be.
@@kotlolish You can't fix stupid.
That hit me where it counted. 💯
Rip fizerban
Why would the DM allow the fighter to roll persuasion against the party? That and allowing the fighter to take magic items that were clearly meant for the wizard. Fighter and DM were both villains.
Sounds like they were all kids. I think bully is a more apt term. Villain sounds a bit strong when referring to kids.
That was a group in denial, not a bunch of friends roleplaying...
It is just a game…
But, how we play the game-even the choices we make towards the environment and NPCs-can reveal hidden truths about our true selves, whether we want to regard/accept them or not. You will be remembered, Fizzerban.
May Fizzerband be remembered among gods and immortals, for his bravery is greater than anything in this realm
one day i would like to find people like him to stand at its side, no matter the risk, this is what a hero looks like and i would be proud to be told a part of his tales.
Normally I don't like to commenting on things but this video deserves the boost in the algorithm.
Fizzerban sits on a throne in all our hearts
HOW DOES A CLERIC NOT CAST GREATER RESTORATION ON HIM AS SOON AS HE RETURNS TO TOWN?
Okay, I am legit worried for Fizzerban now.
There was the moral compass wizard, problem human fighter, rogue, barbarian, and cleric of unknown god... not sure if he just died too quickly or if the cleric was a battle cleric or something, but yea.
Still, even if they did heal him, he might just fire another one.
@@raymondwiggins354 indeed, but still. Come on healer.
Sorry but I had an experience similar to Fizzerband's player. I quit this kind of DM and "main character"... At thr end of the campaign...
This was the most touching story I've heard from you guys.
Honestly... Zinned is not the only problem here. This DM fucked up at almost every turn.
Persuasion rolls should be handled like stealth, if it's not reasonable, it shouldn't be considered even IF it's a nat 20
I don't allow persuasion rolls against other players unless it is consensual for roleplay.
@@minc1236 same here. It takes agency away from the players and makes roleplaying much more difficult.
@@minc1236 makes sense saying as if you convince the player in-game, a persuasion roll is a bit unneeded since the player is essentially the character. Deception is probably a bit more needed with the deception vs insight checks though.
He wasn’t the only problem the others are just as bad for enabling him to do that behavior with no consequences
@@osiristheexile5457 The thing is, most of the other players were newbies who had 0 clue what was going on. While it doesn't absolve them completely of being complicit, you also can't just pin the blame on them as if they were 20-year veteran players who genuinely should have known better.
He knew what needed to be done. I doubt the dm wouldve just let his character die so he had to ensure he had the rules in his favor.
You hit the bullseye
I just got started playing Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms and I am hoping to unlock Astoshan, someday.
Just finished the lizard folk story too so good man this is so true
@@haydenfromtarget1357 so did I. I don't agree with the brutality of his methods, but if I were roleplaying as myself I'd probably take his side too.
This is now one of my favorite episodes
Hail Fizzerband! May his player know that he is a legend and the type of player I would play with anytime!
Beautiful and heart breaking story damn that was an amazing story
That last message... It was directed at everyone, I feel. Zaned most of all. But, well, the party realized it themselves at the end. They were no better for their complacency and inaction.
Always loved the back ground art. : )
I was in similar situation as the wizard player some years ago (not a D&D game though). God, it is hard and heart-wrenching.
From that time I just leave games that turn that way.
I hope Fizzerband’s player is ok, the end of the story doesn’t bode well for his mental health.
he sounds like he's struggling with alot knowing there's a disease called GERD which makes your voice sound deep or scary according to the player the fact that they also deleted their account worries me
@@theeinertia4106 Hopefully, he just got a new account on Roll 20, and just stayed simply text-only, never speaking, because "I'm a mute, RL," and so with the number of people texting on the platform, OP never realized it was the same person, or simply never encountered them again.
Ps : it was a long time ago and I played a cleric of Ares

These are the best rpg stories on UA-cam by far. I've started playing them at 75% speed so I can really relish them.
I´m playing a New Wizard Recently, a Kitsune from the past, lost on medieval present where humans are 97% of the population and hobgoblins slavers are everywhere.
This was a inspiration to me. thanks ^^ !!!
10:43 YIRBEL LIVES! AAAGh! Now i’m self conscious about how slow I type during rps! I think I can usually crank out about 2-3 paragraphs within ten minutes on discord. I might be if I didn’t only have tablet but it still irks me.
I hope "Fizzerban" is okay.
Epic story, I hope the rl player is OK, and he was just a master at making a point. And I hope he sees this so he knows his wisdom was not wasted.
I hope Fizerban is still playing with REAL players and this group stopped inflicting their stupidity and bs on another group ever. I wonder who was gobbling whom's balls, was it the DM or Zened.
Please more stories like this this is why I joined the channel in the first place
Wow!!!!!!!!!!! 🥂 To you Fizerban.

"I'm making the mother of all roads here fizz, can't threat over ever pebble"
good reference
Dude.....this story is beyond unfair. Poor Fizzerban.
we are all one. we understand the darkness best, after seeing the brilliant light together with the darkness. we see the contrast. if you didnt see the contrast between fizzerband and zegnev at the beginning, then you could only see it if the contrast got bigger. kinda like our time now, lots of people think some things are ok, when they really arent, but as the injustice becomes more clearly seen, the more people know without a doubt that something evil happened.
Great story. Great narration. Great channel. I tip my hat off.
Now THIS, this is a glory post.
That was one of your best! Thanks again for the content!
Bro Fizzerban is so cool. (Not sure if I spelled that right) I hope they see this video and that they get some closure knowing that the tiger guy got what was coming to them.
Imagine not having a video from this guy, then this video pops up, I love it
I remember that 22 years back, when the Internet was still young and I experienced RP only through certain Forum types, *whenever* I noticed an obvious powerplayer right from the get-go and after the first 2 minutes of observance, I immediately pointed it out and told players with an totalitarian, god-like attitude how I would not participate in a bullshit one-man show festival and I spoilered right from the beginning what the dangers of such people are.
*_Some hated me, loudly. Most appreciate me, silently._* At least this is how I believe it went down. Yeah I snuffed many horrorstorys before they could level up.
I hope what you said was the truth, both from yours and everyone else's point of view.
I... I'm touched. Seriously. Best story ever in this channel. (yes, even more than Astoshan.)
Why do I have a fear the player of Fizzerban is dead...
I kinda got that impression as well... I just hope we're both wrong.
Tought the same.
Hopefully not. And if so, at least they were remembered, be it in a very small way.
@@goncalocarneiro3043 That is true, I really hope the guy survived, I just...the way things went...
Good sir, I hope this finds you well. I love the stories you get. I was wondering if it possible to get this out on other podcasting platforms. I No longer use Spotify. Thank you for your time and consideration.
I hope Fizzerban's player is doing ok... and I hope those other players learned something from this and became better people.
I know this story! I read it on the net a while ago.
Beautiful simply beautiful
Fizzerban getting out in blazing glory.
This was holy crap I’m honestly at a loss for words right now.
Opinion:
a Roll in persuasion can only persuade someone/something to do something they'd possibly do, may it be as abstract a concept As persuading a halfling to mount a Black Dragon . If it would be something that person would never do under no circumstances whatsoever no amount of persuasion will change that.
A cautionary tale to be better as a player... and as a DM. I do think its sad this had to happen.
may fizzerban rest with lady alustirel
Stunning 👍👍👍
Any fool can learn to cast a spell. This is a wizard.
I wish more videos where posted on spotify love the story's
Great share.
"So what? This is what my character would do" says the player as their rogue steals from the innocent.
"Speaking of which..." reply the paladin with smite & wizard with planeswalk.
Seriously, wtf is up with these powerplayers? Just think what they're like in real life!
Great story!
That's some solid rp
I heard Seig and dragon born in the sane sentence and I thought of my first and only dragonborn minus Skyrim ;)
Man while we have critcrab and den of the drake for the cringe we have you for the real stories of dnd.
Honestly it sounds like everyone’s fault for the story minus Fizzerban.
"So we looted his body"
Why is it, almost every time, when there is a problem character in these stories, it's always experienced players?
Probably cause they get kicked out from good games and have to find others
CAN WE GET A STATUE ON THE WIZARD CANONICALLY ADDED TO THE WORLD PLS. NOT A QUESTION.
Part of me thinks Fizzer had it planned, probably had way more fun solo-ing, and told the DM if the fighter continued his bullshit he'd leave
Why do I feel like this story resonates with like… modern times?
I hope he is ok
Wow. Example by self BBQ.
Impacting.
Remember fyzerbann
I hope Fizzorban player see this video!!!!!!!!!
I really hope fizzerans player didnt do what it sounded like he did he said he was tired of it all
Sounds like he may have killed himself and he might have been struggling with some sort of depression and dnd was an escape and they just reminded him that their is no escape
op makes himself sound like he was an innocent newbie watching another player ruin fizzerban's experience, a bit way too much that I'm lead to believe that op might be more toxic during the campaign that he's painting himself. Basically the toxic player's their scapegoat and he can come off as this level headed guy that didn't know better. good writing though.
Dammit. This story made me sad
Fizzerband deserved better
