    Leupold, if you're listening, replace the crappy turrets on your xv freedom and hd series. You will sell more scopes. I can buy a $100 Amazon scope with dialable and resetable turrets these days.

    This is fantastic. You both have done a lot of valuable work and research on the scout concept.

    I purchased the Burris scout scope for my Gunsite scout in 308 and have been very happy with the results.

    Great series of videos. The most comprehensive video I’ve found on UA-cam. I just purchased the Hi Lux from Midway USA for $112 (may 2024). For my mini 14 an older model without the rear mounting option.

    I like this series. No auditioning for Hollywood. Just solid info.

    I bought the sightmark rapid 2-7 based on the image quality in your 2nd video in this series as an upgrade from the vortex crossfire II scout 2-7. I wasn't disappointed, the image quality is fantastic. You did a really great job capturing what to expect out of each scope in that video.
    As a warning to others though, if you grab the ocular bell and wiggle, you can make the reticle shift by about 1-2 MOA. I wasn't thrilled about that. I grabbed a second unit as a sanity check and it has the same issue. Not super confidence inspiring and it makes it hard to trust the scope at range. At 100 yards, the shifting is within the ballistic error of my 357, past that, it can take me clear off paper.

      Thanks for the heads up. I’ll pass this on to the person who loaned the SightMark M1A and have them check their optic for this problem. Will get back to you.

    Based on your discussion, I'd be really interested in a March-style dual focal plane scope with the ~6" of eye relief. Kind of similar to the discontinued Leupold 1.5-5x you mentioned.
    Decent crosshair and fiber-dot in the rear focal plane, some wind and elevation stadia in the first. That way your primary aiming reference is always visible, but the parts that matter "grow into" the magnification and shrink down when you're at lower power and they don't matter as much.
    Maybe make it a 2-8x or something.
    Also, thanks for posting this series. I've been looking for an optic for my 18" Ruger GSR and this has been some food for thought.

      Even a remake of the VXR as a 1-6 SFP with mildot reticle and a two rotation turret, would be pretty game changing for scout rifles.

    Great series of videos that provided useful information. I learned a lot of things, not just about scout scopes but scopes in general, in the last video. Thank you for the time and effort.

    I'm going to do a video about the scout rifle and you obviously know quite a bit about the subject. Are there any points that you think I should make or any thing that you really think I should mention?

      There’s no content on muzzle devices and the scout rifle concept. Cooper didn’t even mention suppressors TMK.

    I really appreciate the work and knowledge involved in putting all this together. I’ve got the ruger gsr 16 ss and I’m planning on a scope, probably the hilux, and a red dot, probably a Holosun, but I’m leaning towards 510. Both with qr mounts. I also have a mini-14 that I’ll use the optics with also.

    Thanks for putting out these videos. I really enjoy them, and they've helped me to have a good grasp on whats out there.
    Im suprised how much scout scope options have dropped off (should have gotten into them when i was first intrigued)
    After hitting enough issues while hunting (internal breakage and severe distortion in brush), I'd sworn off of cheap optics a while ago. If a manufacturer made a serious contender for the scout as you proposed with a mid eye relief and low profile, I would absolutely pay $1,200.
    In the mean time, Im at a bit of a loss. I have a 1-4 LPVO on my GSR currently, but it doesnt feel quite right. Ive considered the MPVO options, but they seem to either be lacking features, falling into the cheap optics category, or at a pricepoint that I have a hard time accepting for the role ($2k+)
    Whats a scout fan to do? 🤷‍♂️

    • @OnTheScout
      @OnTheScout  8 місяців тому +3

      While the optics revolution is great, the prices that are skyrocketing are not. I hope that my videos inspired people that these low end scopes can do a lot more than what advertising leads us to believe.

    • @tonytable1537
      @tonytable1537 8 місяців тому +2

      @OnTheScout you know, that's a very fair point, you really did do a lot with them across these videos, and maybe I'm getting caught up on the "perfect vs. good" conflict.
      I'll rewatch some of your earlier vids in the series again and redigest. Have had a few instances where I really did wish for a bit more than 4x, maybe the Burris or Vortex variables might hit close enough to the mark for me.
      Thanks for the reply

      @@OnTheScout Well after looking at the primary Arms 1-6x24 it only has a eye relief of 4 inches, However Hi-Lux got back to me earlier today, and let me know they are working on a 2-7x32 LER Gen 2 with a illuminated fiber optic reticle but no release date yet, they said to check back in a few months. if so that sounds about perfect.

      @@OnTheScout I just purchased one and it seems to be well reviewed. According to the spec sheet it was the perfect one for an old model 94.with the top ejection port. The eye relief is the perfect distance at 9.5 to 11 inches.

    So if you had to choose just one scout scope what would it be?

    • @OnTheScout
      @OnTheScout  6 місяців тому +1

      Basically all of the scopes that shot out to 500yards are on similar standing for medium range. They were all equally bad at long range beyond 650. The best scopes at close range were the Hilux and Burris and CT. I’d say choose one of those.

    Have either of you run into any low light issues with an LPVO in hunting situations?

    • @OnTheScout
      @OnTheScout  7 місяців тому

      I haven’t made a low light kill with my 1.5-4x LPVO. Other than a few demonstrations along side the scout optic, I hadn’t had further opportunities. It is of higher optical performance than some of the scout options here.

    Personally, I prefer the Gibbs approach to doing the same thing.

    • @OnTheScout
      @OnTheScout  8 місяців тому +3

      The GSR is not perfect but it made some major improvements to the Frontier design at the behest of Ed Head from Gunsite. I consider it a worthy Frontier 2.0.

      @@OnTheScout I'm actually under the impression that one of the best scout builds today would be a Camilla by Weatherby. Because of its size, it's already halfway there. I'm a good size guy. And I shot one recently. I didn't notice any problems. I'm just saying. Not that there's anything wrong with what you're doing. It's all kind of trial and error for everybody. Just giving my own mileage.

    • @OnTheScout
      @OnTheScout  8 місяців тому +1

      Agreed that a custom scout by a master gunsmith would be the more ideal option that would be closer to a spec correct scout.
