    Amazing! So many good points here. Just subscribed because I’m excited that I’m finding people that see the value of learning how to NOT shoot in LOG or “flat”! I’ve actually created an entire website business based on logging, and sharing my SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) VIDEO SETTINGS (what I’m calling “lens-sensor specific” settings, LUTs) for each camera and lens I’ve been working to test😀!!!

    good video. but the lower the bitdepth you film in the more important to use log. log profile helps reveal details in darker areas by expanding the wave form there so that it can be spread out over more of the quantization levels. if you film in 8bit you will have fewer quantization levels overall and this also in the shadows, so it’s even more important to film in log to capture shadow details.

    ive been shooting in slog3 for the past year in 10 bit, but im finding it a bit more of a hassle than the minor benefits im getting from it. it feels really unprofessional to go back to shooting in a standard PP, but im sorting through 3-4 hours of footage per week and im finding the urge to return to a regular PP. Maybe im doing something wrong and not fully utilizing the benefits of LOG? Im also really torn because I really don't like the colors in the sony cameras, but love the auto focus (which is what I need because im filming myself a lot)
    is it possible to color grade footage shot in a normal PP and make it look pretty? also why is my log footage not as sharp as when I shoot at a normal PP?

    • @JordanLeeVideo
      @JordanLeeVideo  Рік тому +6

      The sharpness issue is due to sharpness being added into the general PPs, whereas with S-Log you should always add it in-post.
      In terms of colouring you log footage, do you use a general LUT to grade/standardise with? If not, I'd hugely recommend that. And then, if you're camera/recorder is able to, load that LUT directly into your camera, so that you're viewing the footage with that preview grade on your screen.
      Some people avoid log and still make gorgeous content, without shooting in Log, but the benefit of log is the flexibility. If you're shooting standard, you've already limited your dynamic range, and potentially saturation in colours if they're extremely vibrant. But if you have lots of control over lighting and exposure, you could potentially get away with using a standard profile, or at least a 'dialed down' profile by adjusting saturation and contrast in the PP settings.
      Hope this helps!

    I use a tweaked c-log preset on my c100 so the video levels are optimized in the c100 and does not look flat. And just need a little grading. I think working like this is more pro

      Log definitely isn't for everyone, just because it's available. Takes a lot of time to understand the complexities of log, not just in general but for each manufacturer/sensor. If there's ways around using it, and still works well for the user, I'm all for it

    Awsome Video Pranav. 🔥💯💯 quick question please. didn’t quite catch the second phases. so is it advisable to shoot at a high fps in log or not really? please a little clarification on dis🙏🏽

      Thanks so much! This depends purely on what type of camera you have, and the available recording rates, such as long-gop recording vs all-intra recording, the data rate/speed it records at, but the most important is whether the high frame rate in your camera is 10bit. For instance, you can shoot at 100 frames in both the a7siii and lumix s1, but the Lumix s1 is heavily compressed 8bit, low bitrate, whereas the a7siii is 10bit and a high bit rate 🙂
      Hope this helps!

    Interesting. I will need to shoot with the 1080p 8 bit rate for my short film (aimed mainly at UA-cam), because anything higher will murder my laptop, am thinking of using Cinelike-D with slight tweaks, such as reduced contrast. Thoughts?

      Sorry for only just responding! Yeah absolutely, that would have worked, but there's always the option to transcode/proxy your footage to give your laptop some breathing space when editing. Hope the short film went well!

    If you do not know how grade 8-bit flat images DO make you an insignificant adviser.
    It is not easy but possible to avoid any noise in shadows and get pleasing color gradations.

      You're probably very skilled in this area, but I what I think he's doing is trying to make it "easy" for the "rest of us" to do more quickly which I'm sure you understand seeing the name of your channel is "Easy..."

      I appreciate your comment, thanks! I openly admit to not being the best colour grader in the world, nor camera operator because there's plenty better than I am, but hopefully I add some value to those with less experience and want to learn tips a few steps at a time.

      @@JordanLeeVideo LUT Mixer by Picture Instruments is the best plugin for LUT application. 3D LUT Creator Pro is the best software to calculate LUT from any type of Color Correction Card shot. Neat Video Reduce noise is the best to eliminate, especially color noise. I have tried almost all available software in this field. Cheers!

    Thanks for the info, but can i tell you that your videos are very dark. Are you aiming for this look or your editing monitor is very bright?

    • @JordanLeeVideo
      @JordanLeeVideo  Місяць тому

      To be fair, when I made this video I wasn't the best at grading, so I'll definitely be using a better monitor moving forwards 😊

    • @maveris7742

      @@JordanLeeVideo The thing is you dont need a new monitor, all you need to do is to calibrate yours to match your phone screen (because people mostly watches youtube on those phones). And you can just play with colors one your PC settings.
