That last point about people arguing over cameras is so spot on man. I see it all the time on places like YT and Reddit. Folks arguing over what brand of camera is best, or why Leica users are 'stupid' for spending more money on cameras with less features. They're little boxes that take pictures and people are behaving like its life or death stuff. Just let people enjoy what they enjoy and stop being so damn miserable. 😄
It feels like it's shot in the past. Man, you don't age Matt, looking great! As for the Leica, I have never been at the place to justify the purchase with those price tags. Especially for hobbyist like me.. But one can dream.
Hit "like" just for the "It's not going to make you a better photographer!" I am always interested in cameras, I started watching just for the curiosity (I must admit I was intrigued to hear about the pricing) -- but that statement put the cherry on the topping of interesting information you offer! Bra-vo!
I agree. It was a refreshing review and down to earth. I have a 10P which I love. The 11 is great but I may wait and see. Same with the 246 that I have. I love the Leica “look” it generates and don’t want such a high res it looks like a Sony. But I suspect an 11 M would be great.
You‘re absolutely right, especially with the last part. It was a pleasure to watch and listen to you as always. Keep up the great work. Wishing you and your family all the best. Greetings from Germany!
I've started a niche wedding business where I charge a premium to take only candid photos thought the day. The couple says I'm a family member and I can focus on shooting and not directing or spending time on family photos etc. I really like the idea of using minimal gear that's under the radar. I think having the internal storage for medium jpeg backup is brilliant. Pretty pumped for this camera.
Seems like a great camera. FWIW, I’ve been shooting a color M9 and an M9 Mono for over 10 years now and still use them as my regular cameras, especially the Mono. I may jump to the M11 someday, but I’m pretty pleased w what I’ve got. Also, unless I’m completely misunderstanding this multi-resolution raw files are nothing new. Both my Canon 5DsR and Canon 6D allow multi resolution raw files, ie, pixel binning. This works especially well w the 5DsR as a slightly noisy 50mpx image will be saved as a 26mpx image w far less noise.
yeah i'm still shooting an m9. i love it still and the files hold up. i only consider to upgrade purely for upgrading's sake. not for better photos or better anything else. it's good how leica keeps shooting an M camera the same whether it's an M3, M9 or M11.
@@theraven6836 awesome! i don't have an M3 i have an M6. my friend has an M3 and it's built to such a high standard. makes my M6 feel a bit cheap. M3 is beautiful to use.
Out of all channels, I love yours the most when it comes to reviews. The filming, editing, voice, all of it. That doesn’t mean you should do more though because you tempt me 😂
When I caught word of this camera, the first person I thought of was you. Even though this is severely out of my price range, it is cool to see practicality being the emphasis of this camera. I’ll start saving for an M11 but this is definitely a cool rangefinder for sure. Thanks for the video!
Love the comment about getting a life vs. arguing in the comments. So true. One personal observation on a camera making you a better photographer - when I went from a Canon 5DIII to M-P240 it was initially frustrating (the focusing mainly) but with time I realized it made me more intentional in my photography, which I think made me a better photographer. I feel like anything that makes you stop and think vs setting it on A or P is a good thing.
that resolution choice and internal storage has been in my wishlist for a very very long time. hoping every other camera manufacturer learns from leica.
Even though I would never get a Leica, except for my Leica 25mm for m4/3 I do appreciate that new cameras with innovative ideas are still coming out in this evil battle with phones.
Really was waiting for this video from you! Especially as i’m considering on getting my first film M this year! it’s so interesting (and important to me) to see Leica honor it’s past, but more importantly push itself with every iteration. The small advancements really add up in the final product
I really appreciate that! And I couldn’t agree more. Leica is known for staying consistent in their design and approach, they don’t just adapt to every new trend like a lot of manufacturers. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, there are reasons those cameras are what they are and they serve a purpose. It’s rad that Leica does their own thing, but great to see them embracing the features that really make a difference in the practical, day to day use.
Don’t buy a film Leica M, due to Parallax Error you will only really be able to use 35mm or 50mm lenses. At least with the digital M10s and M11 you have the option of using a EVF and Live-View LCD as well as the optical viewfinder, which means you will be able to use lenses of all focal lengths
I just love the way the lens renders the background and that drop off, kind of grainy cinematic looking. I kept getting distracted and looking at the books in the background.
I appreciate you saying that! After going simple (lazy) on most of my A-Roll shots lately, I had fun dialing this one in with the lighting and color. I was happy with the finished look.
There's always going to be something I would have done differently, but for me I think this is great progress and really has me trying to do the math of how to afford it, lol.
No need for you to do the math to figure how to afford the M11; myself and my fellow gangster friends will be hijacking a truck load of M11s from a JFK airport cargo terminal, I’ll sell you one for $3,000
Like you said, with the m10 they nailed it. This one have great new things that are welcome ( and the 60mp triple sensor which is impressive). But I think in 10 years, when I will be able to justify getting a leica m, I'll go for the m10
Am not in the market for a Leica. And i don't have the salary to be thinking about a Leica. But, i just LOVE the simplicity of the Leica approach, menus, etc. There just seems to be so much practical wisdom--all focused on usability--the company incorporates into their cameras. Just perplexes me why other camera companies haven't followed suit, at least with one photo-only model.
Matt, your videos never cease to impress me. I always love the Midwestern coffee table living room chat style of your video format. Also, you have the photo community dead to writes about the commentary on new camera specs. Unfortunately, Leica aficionados are especially guilty of such inane bickering.
I am looking to buy my first Leica digital. I have used the M6, Leicaflex SL2, and the R5. What do you think would be your choice of first Leica digital to buy with my type of film experience? Thank you, John
Interesting that the charge port is on the bottom, most cameras I've seen have it on the side so the camera can sit on the bottom plate while charging. Do other cameras have this on the bottom also?
There’s also the hybrid mechanical and electronic shutter that can do 1/16000th of a second and the meter now uses the sensor for more accurate metering. It’s a kick ass camera but I’m happy with my M10 and will shoot it until it breaks. Great vid Matt and let me know where you’re getting your fountain of youth water. :)
Hi Matt, thanks and congrats for the review. You seem to be a good guy and always appreciate your sharp and insightful analysis. I’m sure M11 is a great camera and I enhancements are surely welcomed. Now, I don’t get the Monochrom comment from your side too much… I’ve been using M10M as my everyday tool, personally and professionally, for over a year, and I don’t see any major breakthrough or feature in the M11 that would make anybody disregard the M10M right now as a real valid tool choice. Especially when you consider the price tag of having a new battery mechanism, more resolution sensor (40MP not enough for any needs?) and perhaps the electronic shutter for very specific situations… I don’t know, as you very rightfully concluded, none of these tools will make you instantly a better photographer or better results, fully agree. I’ve had an M240 as my color system for those (exceptional) moments I require color and is still a gorgeous camera to use with its limitations for sure. Best regards from Spain Matt, and keep it up with all the shared great content.
Regarding SD card replacement, I've always powered down my camera to remove/replace a SD card, ever since my first Canon point and shoot in the late 90s. It is new to me that you would need to remove a battery to remove the SD card however.
Thanks for the shared thoughts. I don't mind losing the bottom plate. But I also wish there was some door or hinge protecting the battery terminals when the battery is removed for charging. I know there's the solution of a backup battery (which most elect for), or the fact that if you have no battery, the camera is likely resting on a table, and therefore the battery terminals should be safe. Maybe I'm over thinking it, but am I crazy to wish there was some level of covering with the battery removed?
Leica has brought some intriguing innovations to the table with this release. As an M10 Monochrom owner, I would be interested in seeing what an M11 Monochrom is like; however, I doubt I would feel an urge to upgrade. I have yet to run into a limitation of the 40MP sensor.
Excellent video Matt. I too have been think about moving to M , probably an M10-P but this really gets me thinking. The issue I have is that as an Android user I do think Leica's preference for Apple technology is annoying. Still, there are other ways to connect and charge or download images!
Great video Matt, as always. Glad you liked it, I just ordered mine. A lot of convenience improvements but the sensor and triple resolution seems, to me at least, like a game changer. And I agree, it's crazy how emotional and nasty some people get about these on the net. Anyhow, can't wait to get it, still need to find a buyer for my M10 though :P Cheers and keep up the good work!
Hey ! As an none enough social media player I never go on yt to get advice nor anything, anyway as a pro photographer since 10 year like you it seem ! I’ve just discover your Chanel 👍 good job ! Have you realised that as soon as you put the M11 on the curtain goes up like a mirror less, that mean you need to put the camera off to change your lens (on the 10 if you are in LV if you take off your lens curtain directly go down) I’m right ?
Hey Matt, any chance you want to try a 127 camera for 127 day (January 27th). I have a Rollei 4x4 and a few rolls of HP5 I would be happy to push your way if interested. Thanks for the content man.
Now there we have a nice looking digital that could replace my M6 at the exact same size. And it has just the function I miss on most current cameras! I very much dislike dealing with large resolution files when I don’t need them and most of the cameras these days easily have twice the resolution I need under normal circumstances. I’m sold on this! Meaning, I’m going to buy this used in 10 years, or when film prices finally explode way beyond my budget 😅 I definitely can’t even remotely afford it!
Apparently the M11 has a in-built feature that enables one to shoot in B&W too, this feature is further assisted by the LCD changing to B&W; thus negating the need for a M11 Monochrome.
I will say, the M10 Monochrom is the first Leica Monochrom that can compete with my 645 and XP2. The only other camera's that can do that are the Sigma Foveon ones like the Merrill, or my favorite, the sd Quattro. The BW out of those quirky camera's is still my favorite digital Mono, even over the M10M...so, would love to see Leica make another purpose-built mono sensor based on the M11 one.
If I'm ever able to buy a M11, it won't be enough because the lenses I use on my M6 (Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm f4 and 35mm f2.5 and Canon ltm 50mm f1.4) won't be good enough for the 60mp sensor. I won't have to find $9k but double or triple that for the equivalent Summicron lenses.
Great video as always Matt! Just wondering, what do the monochrome versions of the M cameras offer that the colour models don't, when you can just edit the colour shots to mono? Is it the purity of the shooting experience, or do you find there is a richness in a monochrome sensor? Thanks!
Cool camera. Kind of interested in their approach to matrix metering that they’re adding with the M11. However, it’s way more expensive than I would be comfortable spending.
I’ve never had any issues removing or inserting SD cards while the camera is on, as long as the LED indicators are showing the camera isn’t actively doing anything at the time. But I still tend to turn the camera off first out of habit.
Seeing Reddit or Facebook group threads where people discussed what cameras I was using and why and arguing back and forth was one of the weirdest scenarios to me. What kind of time do people have?
Quick question! In your time with it, did you see if there was a way to do small raw to the internal and large raw to a card? I'm guessing not, but I'm hoping.
Man, that’s a great question. I don’t remember seeing it in the menus, but I’ll try to find out and get back to you on that for sure! I sent the camera back today, got to hold onto it a couple more days than I thought I would. 🥲
I love it, and would seriously consider buying it, but I'm a film guy with 2x Canon P's and I've been on the fence with a Digital Leica for the last few years, knowing it would undermine the gear I already use, for a much bigger price tag. Also the real important thing is, are you aging backwards Matt? I swear you look 8 years younger!
Haha! I appreciate that. ❤️ I know what you mean though. Especially now that I’m no longer shooting weddings or portraits for my income, it’s a much tougher sell for me since I tend to stick with film for personal projects. Who knows, maybe one day! But while film is still here and it’s what I prefer, it feels like I should keep it going while I can.
Hey Matt, great video. The sensor is from Sony (same as a7riv basically), perfected by Leica. FTR Leica should get full credit for the 3 image sizes, the image processing engine / workflow. I would love to have that option on my Sony too. I wish they released the Monochrom M11 at the same time, my typ 246 is getting long in the tooth.
This new M11 seems great ! I had the chance to try the M10-R a few months ago thanks to a Leica store in Paris, France and I had great feelings with it. Is the "3 resolutions sensor thing" including a crop ? like you can do with the Q2 to switch from 28 to 35mm ? Also having USB-C is really cool. I only use that to charge my fuji and it's really simple, fast, and practical. thanks you for your video, especially the "it won't make you a better photographer" there is so much gear on the internet and stuff that we often forget to really challenge us and our mind to create even better work than we were doing yesterday.
Well Matt, firstly your videos are really helpful - well done! I've been shooting with my M9 since 2013 with the 35m summicron. Love it! But perhaps ready to move up to the M10 which seemed to be the perfect camera. And now comes the M11 and I have exhausted reviews. On the fence but I think I am leaning still toward the M10. Your thoughts? Keep posting! ~Steve

Daddy Leica here for the win
🤣🤣🤣 appreciate you!
I didn't realize people took their SD cards out while the camera is on. Isn't that bad for the card?
I’ve never had any issues removing or inserting SD cards while the camera is on, as long as the LED indicators are showing the camera isn’t actively doing anything at the time. But I still tend to turn the camera off first out of habit.
It’s crazy how mad people get even if I use a different camera than the last one I was using. What a world.
Ha! I read this comment and was like, "Woah! That would be amazingly helpful." Then I realized who posted it. Hi.
Man, that’s a great question. I don’t remember seeing it in the menus, but I’ll try to find out and get back to you on that for sure! I sent the camera back today, got to hold onto it a couple more days than I thought I would. 🥲
@@idreaminsurfgreen5327 LOL. Hey buddy 🥰
Novice question: how do you decide between getting M and Q for an everyday camera?
Not true. Leica has never used Sony sensors.
@@williaminbody205 that's not true, though most of it has come from Jazz Semiconductor
Thanks Matt what did you think of the colors? I saw a difference between M10 and M10 R and I prefer the R. Can you comment on M11?
I wish I could afford one, but I'm gonna watch the marketplace for some M10's now..
It’s not a crop no
Well Matt, firstly your videos are really helpful - well done! ~Steve
Great video, the price it a bit too much for me. Will keep shooting my film m.
Time to get an M10
I'm kind of feeling off about not having a base plate for a Leica M model.
I know it is not practical but it just feels not complete.
Damn Matt became a social studies teacher with that haircut 😂...great vedio tho
Hahaha is that a shot or a compliment?! Thanks man!
