Jason Baron i think both would be cute, but of course they aren't going to use -chan since a) they don't know him and b) he isn't that type of celebrity - people tend to use -chan for jpop idols and other such cutesy celebs.

Fujikko seems very insightful. Specifically when she mentioned that even though she didn't necessarily agree with the people who were saying that the musicians were created by a corporate machine, the respected their opinion as valid. In my experience, the vast majority of people can't respect or even try to understand a viewpoint they might disagree with(especially political views). Also that opposing views are necessary to create balance in society. Truly inspiring. Subscribed.

I love what you guys had to say! Westerners (at least from an American point of view) tend to analyze a lot and over think lol. We are also encouraged to do critical thinking so thinking about the company and the girls ages and such is what we tend to think about sometimes, we like to think about different points of views. Also I think Westerners tend to think kind of poorly about Japan as far as Japan and Japanese people being weird, I'm not looking at Japan with rose-colored glasses (No country / culture is perfect) but I don't think it's right. Anyways, love your videos, keep 'em coming!! ^_^

I think that, in regard to the business aspect, American young musicians tend to also be cultivated within companies but the appearance is that they're simply "getting famous" because of their talent. When you consider the number of Disney child celebrities who go on to become teen starlets it's a similar process. A number of people became household names because of shows on Disney or Nickelodeon as children. Bands like NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys (both formed by Lou Pearlman) were formed by a producer who auditioned memberships in the bands. A lot of people like to think of those groups as friends who met and worked together to form a band and made it big, the way that a band like Nirvana was formed. When they find out that they were formed on purpose by a producer in the same way as a group like BABYMETAL they are surprised. It's not that American producers don't audition and hire groups, but it's being out in the open about it.

I was recently told by my doctor that I have arrhythmia. I can lead a normal life, I just have to avoid activities that are too exciting or taxing on my heart. Watching these two girls react to videos single-handedly worsened my condition tenfold and I am now in the hospital hooked up to a respiratory system that is barely keeping me alive. One thing I can say for Babymetal, apart from their music itself, is that they can be a gateway for westerners to discover and explore more Japanese music. For me, through Babymetal I discovered Scandal, Stereopony, Band-Maid, Nogizaka46, etc; and became more aware of - and interested in - Japanese culture. ふじっこちゃんわすごくかわいいですも :)

sidenote- I enjoy learning of Japanese cultures and what you may find strange

  • @RabidDogma
    @RabidDogma 8 років тому +1

I think a key to this is that the cultural differences make each culture's creations seem more "extreme" or "wild." The things that we see as normal, Japanese people are going to see as strange and interesting to some degree...and vice versa.
What I love is that each side seems more than willing to learn about the other, or at least to experience it through this format. That's a lot more than could be said in decades past.

     1/2) ua-cam.com/video/mRRERA2oT6w/v-deo.html
     2/2) ua-cam.com/video/f9KKNMoPRAQ/v-deo.html

That was really entertaining to watch, especially from my viewpoint as a BABYMETAL fan. It's interresting to see your reactions about their opinion about your country or what is said about it. It clearly shows that people barely know really the differences or similarities of culture that exists between some countries. And discovering the opinion this way is quite nice to watch.

While the Japanese music (especially when it comes to the girl groups) focus more on the cuteness, the western music industry is more focused on the sex appeal.
Also (correct me if I'm wrong) I feel like Japanese music videos have a lot more inside knowledge/cultural things mixed in there, so the western audience might not get it simply because they don't know what is going on.
Cuteness overall is just something that is not that common in the west. Same goes for young artists.
Most artists are around 18+ because of the law (you can't let underaged people work for that long, otherwise they might sue you) and the fact that they are forced to create their own sound. What makes you stand out from the rest, is the main question when it comes to fame.
Both have their pros and cons and it's fun to see how different the music actually is :) anyways, great video!
Also, may I request Troye Sivan's Blue Neighborhood series, or just fools? Thanks~

    • @akky5357
      @akky5357 8 років тому +2

I'm Japanese and I agree with you. I think Japan needs to put a little more sexiness into things. Most people including me like flat chests and etc. (you know what I mean) and now unlike American songs, most of our songs have nothing to do with sex. Probably why we're kind of short on new borns.

    • @aardbeidelijkheid
      @aardbeidelijkheid 8 років тому +12

Akky X To be honest, I think it doesn't need to be more sexualized (especially considering most idols are supposed to be the girl next door and the audience seems to be consisted out of lots of (older) male fans).
The thing that always surprises me is how young the idols seem to be (or made out to be). It gives me, with my western view I might add, a feeling that pedophilia is accepted more? (if the idols look like ladies and they are sexualized it's, to me, better than the cute girls being sexualized, if you know what I mean).
Sexualisation isn't going to make sure people are going to have kids earlier, I think making sure that health care, free day care and a mentality that it's ok for people to have two parents whom are working would stimulate it more.
Liking flat chests isn't bad at all (I mean, can you imagine no one liking flat chested people? That'd be a shame).
But if sexualized lyrics are going to help and break the taboo of sex, then sure, why not? (tho preferably not out of the mouths of people under 16/18, imo >.

aardbeidelijkheid For that point, I agree. My statement was partially a joke, but if I were to get serious on this, I think Japan is going all about cuteness on the younger idles these days. I personally don't hate akb48 and other idle groups, but since i'm not a big fan of idles, I have no right to judge this fact.

I also liked your reaction, you don't seem to force reactions like a lot of people in America.

I found this video after watching the original "UA-camrs React to Babymetal" video, and it's interesting to see it from the point of view of actual Japanese people. There's such a culture divide between Asia (especially Japan) and the West that we often see each other as being "weird", but in reality, everyone is weird. I find these videos where you react to react videos about something Japanese very interesting, especially the conversations after the video. It might be great if in the future you could arrange a direct conversation about this kind of topics with western people.
And as an over 30 years old veteran metalhead, I really love Babymetal. I'm always a sucker for music that manages to sound more simple and easy to listen than it actually is.

One thing that's different between Japan and the West is how the idol system works, but I disagree with the react video saying that it means they don't work hard because idols definitely work extremely hard. Also Fujikko is super cute, she reminds me of Shinoda Mariko!

I really love your videos, and I hope that you read comments (and that you don't have trouble understanding me in English... I only know a few words in Japanese, sorry) because I love hearing from people with different views. It often opens my eyes to ways of seeing the world that I just never thought about before.
One of the things that it seems like you might not know about Americans is that up until very recently, Americans were very, very sheltered from the world. When you go to the movie theater, for example, you see plenty of American movies. In America, you never see a Japanese movie or any other foreign movie in a theater except in specific theaters that show foreign films - and there are very few of those, usually only in big cities. And America is mostly countryside, not big cities.
So until the Internet got really big, lots of Americans had never had ANY encounters with foreign media. When I was 10 or 11 years old, I found a cassette tape in a store that was from Italy. I got it out of curiosity. Listening to it was very strange to me. I had never seen a foreign movie, or heard a song in a foreign language, or anything. I don't think I had even ever heard someone speaking in a foreign language except for a few times my grandparents spoke to each other in Spanish. It was so strange to hear something that I knew held a bunch of meaning, but I could not even begin to understand.
Isolation like that is less common now, and most kids growing up have heard foreign music of some kind (probably Gangnam Style). People in almost all other countries are really used to this, hearing American or European music, seeing American films, etc. For Americans it can still be uncommon, although the Internet is making it more common all the time.
Also, it definitely seems like you two have a really different view of young people. In America, young people are seen as totally incompetent. The idea that a kid or teenager could choose to be in a band, or choose to do anything else, is seen as ridiculous. Young people can not make decisions for themselves, and anything that happens in their life is because an adult made it happen. If their life is different from what most people see as the regular way people live as kids, they believe an adult took advantage of them and exploited them. Even if they are told that the young person wanted to be in a band or play golf professionally (like Tiger Woods) or act in movies, it makes no difference. Because young people are seen as completely unable to make decisions, it does not matter what they want, and it is assumed that someone tricked them or forced them into wanting anything that is not 'normal.' That is why the one girl seemed to think something was wrong with young girls being in BABYMETAL. They can not even imagine a world where the girls in BABYMETAL are having a good experience, because the only way a young person can be in a popular music group is by being tricked and exploited by adults.

11:00 I think one of the cultural differences you're missing here is that in Japan it's considered normal for men in their 20's, 30's, or even 40's to be attracted to teenage girls. In the US and many other western cultures, it's considered weird, strange, or even creepy for men to be attracted to much younger girls who are still in their teens.

I really appreciate BABYMETAL because as a person who lives in a western culture, I have found much of the culture to be boring, selfish, overly about sex, and groups like BABYMETAL are refreshing on so many levels. In the west, it seems that any "Metal" has to be dark and seemingly angry. Not with BABYMETAL. They are sweet, kind, proper, and genuinely caring girls. I've recently started getting into more of the Kawaii culture usually found in Japan and I'm pretty hooked. I often have felt like I am in the wrong culture...like I'm looking at the wrong person in the mirror. But this is who I am.
Thank you for posting this video! :3
