  • We recently visited Universal Audio's headquarters in Scotts Valley, California. While there we chatted with CEO Bill Putnam Jr. about their iconic 1176 Compressor/Limiter.
    Bill shared stories of the early history of the 1176, including his father's design motivations, its unique sonic qualities and applications of this iconic compressor and limiter. Bill also discussed their efforts to bring the 1176 back to market, challenges that they faced and its legacy in the history of recording.

    bill is big in the recovery community in my town. he came to my rehab and talked to everyone, i kept trying to talk gear to him, he just wanted people to stay sober🤣i was shocked when he told me who he was, he was wearing a urei shirt

    Now this is a great story of a mans kids taking there fathers business to the next several levels. Universal Audio has become the premier pro, prosumer, amateur home studio/recording company, just excellent, outstanding growth in their business and products

    I own the same 1176 as it shows 0:15. but I often see some people own the urei version instead of it shows classics right above the meter. is Urei version more vintage so these two models give an actual difference in sounding? or is there any difference that I do not know? Thanks.

      MERCY most older hardware gear will have a slight difference in sound based on the age and wear of the transformers. Not too far removed from one another, though.
