Sunken WILLOW GROVE SCHOOL of Dale Hollow Lake - The grave of EDDIE IRONS Episode 278

  • This week me and Larry Stephens dive the ruins of the Willow Grove School which lies at the bottom of Dale Hollow lake. Willow Grove was one of the towns that was inundated with water when the reservoir was impounded by the Corps of Engineers in 1942. #TheTownThatDrowned
One of the most interesting aspects of the Willow Grove School is that Eddie Irons was poured in the front steps of the front porch of the school. Lake historian Darren Shell tells the story of young Eddie’s death and burial, then how he was accidently dug up more than once, and eventually poured into the steps of the school.
The Corps of Engineers attempted to free Eddie from the front porch of the school prior to flooding the town of Willow Grove, but the dynamite on slightly damaged the concrete of his now watery tomb. As a result, Eddie Irons remains entombed in concrete of what remains of the school’s front porch.
If you want to listen to the entire hour and a half interview of Darren Shell discussing the history of Dale Hollow Lake, it is Season 2, Episode 40 on Relics Radio and the link is: bit.ly/3hHTsC7
For a complete list of books by Darren Shell, and links to purchase them, you can go to amzn.to/2RE5T7c

I appreciate the photo credit on the school. At the time I was the camp director of KSP Trooper Island and had dove the school house several times. We were conducting training during the off season and I was flying in a helicopter and upon seeing the school decided I wanted a photograph since the water was down. I sent a copy to the Army Corps which they later published. Thanks again Retired K.S.P. Sgt. Craig Sutton

Very cool video and story. Right here in North Central Texas, the town of Comanche, home to the notorious AND famous gunslinger John Wesley Hardin. Talk about a small town with a HUGE story. Hardin pretty much made his name after a day of dealing with bets on horses and racing his own horse to win a lot of money. The big story starts right where that large amount of money came in.

He'll possibly forever be under the water and stay inside of his cement tomb unless the lake gears drained by some group in the future.
